"Indeed. At the very least, however, you don't need to alter your phrasing out of fear of a trap. I am not seeking to sway your mind just yet."

That's reassuring. Jehoel turns away from Masaru and keeps going.

Masaru stops walking for almost a minute at that request. Jehoel can feel the tension in the air from the question. He can practically taste the tension. Finally, Masaru calmly begins walking again, and once caught up with Jehoel, begins speaking. Slowly, carefully, in a precisely-measured tone.

"Captain Osuma was...a singular individual. Many considered him a figure of legend; while he was not the first Captain of our Division, or the first Kenpachi, he seemed to fit that same mold. Osuma was a man of strength who did what he could to encourage and grow the strength in others. He believed in leading his men and women from the battlefield, and cared about their success and failure."

Of course, he'd also done little to change the negative attitudes and "traditions" of the Division. But to the man who'd murdered Osuma, Masaru would not speak a breath of such critique.

Jehoel is silent through Masaru's description. He empties the last bottle, placing the empty vessel on top of another smooth gravestone.

"He sounds like an individual of exceptional character. It is unfortunate that I was never able to meet him before we found ourselves on opposite sides of the battlefield. He deserved a better death than the one he received. As, unfortunately, often seems to be the case. Still, at the least he shall be remembered. Cold comfort, perhaps, but better than some."

Jehoel evaporates the second crate much like the first one. He makes no effort to move from his current spot.

"Good!", the instructor exclaims and turns towards the new recruits. "I will give you one minute to discuss your tactics. When I blow a whistle, your time is over and the exercise begins. Begin... now!"

The recruits rapidly form a circle and the air is filled by conspirational murmur. Then the whistle is blown and many of the recruits dash for the pile of equipment while others...

... stand in place and begin insulting Ryouma to his face.

"Your mom was dumb and ugly!"
"You stink worse than a dead elephant!"
    "You **** bears!"

Some recruitss also start flinging ropes, chains and grappling hooks at Ryouma's head. Two grab the ends of a long, heavy chain and try to run past Ryouma while he is distracted, one from the left, another from the right, with intention of either tripping the giant or wrapping the chain around his ankles.

"Awwww, that's ADORABLE! I can see how much effort went into those insults."

Ryouma snatches the implements flung at his face and yanks on them, which might disarm the recruits completely or bring them sailing across the field a short distance.

The heavy chain going for his ankles has a much easier stopping method. He simply stomps on it, cramming the links into the dirt. He made sure not to try and break it - the links could go flying off and hurt someone.

Many of the recruits weren't really even trying to hold onto their equipment, just flinging them at Ryouma as a distraction. Others allow themselves to be yanked forward, using the momentum to jump on Ryouma and trying to grab a hold of his clothes or limbs to climb on him.

Meanwhile, the two recruits holding ends of the heavy chain stay where they are while another pair uses the opportunity to try and loop a second chain around the ankle of the foot stomping on the chain. A third pair is already fetching a third chain and waiting for the opportunity. Ryouma can't stomp on all of them at the same time.

In addition to bindings, insults also continue to be flung:

"Yo momma was so fat, they mistook her for a new planet!"
"When you look in a mirror, it breaks out of courtesy!"
"I'd call you dumb as a brick, but then I'd be insulting the bricks!"

Ryouma doesn't bother to fling the students clinging onto his clothes or arms. They'll probably have a hard enough time hanging on with him moving suddenly as it is. He crouches to grab onto the second chain - with any luck, the ones holding onto it will be smart enough to let go once they realize his intent to actually use it. He launches the chain at one of the students holding the third length; if he doesn't dodge, he might end up entangled or hurt.

As for the hecklers, he doesn't bother responding. His skin is literally thicker than this.

Within a few minutes of messages being dispatched, a small envoy of representatives from the Noble House of Tsuyoi appear outside the gates of the Koutetsu holdings. Leading the group is a huge bear of a man, dressed as a Shinigami and lugging a massive Zanpakuto strapped to his back. He walks with a limp as he approaches the gates. Just behind and to his right, a woman of utterly unexceptional appearance and demeanor follows, looking at the surroundings analytically. The third member of the group is a scribe and largely unimportant. After making their presence known, they wait to be let in.

Masaru considered the situation for a few moments.

"A Shinigami. Likely dead well over a century, possibly a few centuries considering the consistently mild weather in Soul Society. Combat-capable, would have likely fallen in combat with you. Probably a Seated Officer, or exceptionally talented Unseated. I don't know their name right now, but it's possible with some help, I could search our Archives to discover it."

    He pauses, then continues.

"I think your presented point is that even celebrated heroes fade from memory as time goes on. Eventually everyone who knew someone passes on. Then, everyone who know those people passes. Unless there's a strong written record, oral tradition, or highly-visible memorial, they fade from memory of all that remain and come after."

"All reasonable extrapolations. Had I planned this out ahead of time, I likely would have selected such a grave."

He folds his arms behind his back.

"Xue Huifang died at age 17 in the year 1245 A.D. 6 years after entering the Soul Society, she chose to apply for Shinigami training in order to help provide for the family community that had adopted her. Although she had the highest spiritual power of any individual in her class, Xue was utterly unsuited to being a Shinigami in temperament, something that would ultimately keep her from achieving significance during her career. Assigned to the 4th Division because of her acceptable level of skill with Kaidō, Xue would later develop substantial skill as a detection expert and was, against her desires, attached as a support specialist to a hunting squad assigned to deal with exceptionally difficult targets. Several decades following, her allies were wiped out during an ambush by a group of Hollows they had underestimated. I happened to be in the area at the time and was intrigued by the absolute lack of fear she showed prior to her death. I eliminated her attackers and spoke to her a while before, at her request, crippling her and rendering her unfit for combat duty. As is my wont with those who attract my interest, I occasionally spoke to her for the remainder of her life."

    He pauses.

"The circumstances of her death are not a matter of public record and would seem to fit, perhaps too well, with some of the concepts I have been pushing since the inception of the treaty. I will tell you if you desire, but that is not, ultimately, the thrust of my point. Armed with a name, you could indeed find a record of her. Minor biographical information, perhaps a few records of her accomplishments. It will not tell you that she loved sunflowers more than any other sight or that she showed no fear in the face of death. It will not tell you that she refused to inflict pain on even the smallest existence, or that she couldn't stand the taste sour foods. It will tell you that she was a soldier of minimal accomplishment, not a woman who gave everything she had for the sake of her family. She has been worse than forgotten. She was erased. Ignored beyond the most token efforts, twisting what memory there was of her until it was devoid of the woman herself. Heroes and legends have it little better. The stories we tell twist over time, as the words and the lens through which we view them warp with age. We remember stories, not people. Singular deeds, not the habits and beliefs that truly define us."

    Jehoel looks over at Masaru.

"Death is an erasure, Captain. There is no glory. No 'good death.' You just said that your captain was not a perfect man, but in a century, his flaws will be forgotten. A legend will take the place of the individual who actually lived his life. These memories and stories comfort the living. They do nothing to benefit the dead. Quite the opposite, if anything. Just a thought to consider."

The magenta-haired girl Ryouma saw earlier apparently realizes what he's doing and tackles the third pair of chain holders to the ground before the second chain can hit them. Well. That's pretty fast for someone in her early teens.

Ryouma might not see a whole lot else for the next moments, because three of the recruits managed to cling on his body, and one of them took off his coat and slapped it on Ryouma's face. A second one is trying hard to loop a steel cable around Ryoma's neck and throat, while the third is wrapping a chain around Ryouma's right arm as if it was a gigantic piece of ham.

Ryouma's gotta hand it to the students, their teamwork is really on top of things. Time to kick it up a notch.

With a vigorous motion, the giant spins with his arms outstretched to shake the student clinging to his arm. As he finishes the motion, he reaches for the one closest to his face so he can see again.

What is perhaps most surprising to the instructor is that his usual cold aura seems to be under control for the moment. It remains to be seen how long that will last.

The recruit who was clinging to Ryoma's arm clings to the bindings he made for dear life. But eventually his grip fails and he flies off in wide arc.

The recruit on Ryouma's face use his jacket as a handhold and does his best to maneuver around the giant's head to avoid being caught. Ryouma manages to slip the jacket off his eyes in time to see the other recruits have fetched the second and third chains back and are now scurrying around his feet.

He has to admit they're pretty good. If this weren't a training exercise, and he weren't going out of his way not to hurt the little buggers, Ryouma would be in quite a bind indeed. The classic world of cardboard conundrum: everything breaks so easily, doesn't it?

He could just leap out of the way, make them start their work all over again. Instead, the giant lifts his foot as though he were to take a step back...

...and quickly stomps down explosively, a smidgen of spiritual power pulsing at his sole.

Had he pulled back a bit further, the ground under his foot would crumble, and he might lose his balance. Instead, by doing a short, flat stomp, he ensures the impact radiates from the surface at the point of impact, aided by his spiritual pressure.

He just needs to make the little guys stumble, after all. And if they leap?

So much the better. That way he can snatch the chains in midair.

The recruits stumble and falter due to the ground shaking. It'll take them a few seconds to get their game back on. The guy hanging on Ryouma's neck is trying to twist the steel cable to make the loop tighter and deprive Ryouma's brain of blood and oxygen.

It's actually a pretty smart tactic, Ryouma hadn't noticed exactly when the steel cable was wrapped around his neck.

Unfortunately for the student, he'd been known to chew through worse bindings.

While jogging a bit forward to gain some space, the giant reaches with both hands for the cable while it's not too tight yet. His neck muscles bulge and relax to give him a little slack, and he manages to slip his fingers past them, yanking more or less effortlessly until it snaps like a cheap rope.

I met a girl with a really pensive look. I walk up to her, put a fifty cent coin in her hand, "For your thoughts. I know the going rate is supposed to be one, but I figure you play hardball."

She gave it back, "Keep it. Pretty sure a guy with your charm can find a way to have them for free anyway."

Masaru listened carefully as Jehoel spoke, and again took time to think over and measure his response.

"You are not wrong, Primera-san. Ultimately, death, for beings as us, is an erasure, an end. And the loss of the truths of these lives is saddening."

He looked at their surroundings, pondering the plants all around them.

"But ultimately, we all pass on. If we did not, nothing new could grow. It is the way of the Cycle. Eventually, when stories become legends become myths of old, new generations have arisen that, hopefully, are managing things better than those that came before. Fresh faces, ideas, they breathe new life in. Ultimately, that promise of a cycle of new life coming about is one of the things I fight for. It is not perfect, but it seems nothing in Existence is.

I would be lying if I said I do not fear death. But I have reached the point where I acknowledge it will happen one day.
    "

    He gives a humorless smirk.

"I'm simply going to try and put that day off as long as possible. And so long as I put it off, then there will be 2 beings that know the truth of Xue Huifang."

As the cable snaps, the monkey recruit falls of Ryouma's back. The other recruits are scurrying around Ryouma's feet, trying to keep pace with the giant as he jogs around and trying to loop a chain around either of his ankles.

"C'mon, guys! You should remember I'm at least marginally smarter than the average Hollow! You keep going for the same spots!"

It's kind of funny he knows what marginally means.

Oh, by the way, here comes another stomp!
