How do you like your boats?
In old games, how do you like your boats? Able to sail right up to the shore, or not able to enter shallow water? Disembark anywhere, or just on beaches, or just on docks? Same size as the character, or bigger? Wind powered, motor powered, sea serpent powered? One sail, lotsa sails, no sails? Fast, normal speed? Complete with their own music and water sounds?

Re: How do you like your boats?
Eh, as cool as Arpeggio is, I prefer my ships as actual girls rather then a ship projecting a girl. Kancolle all the way (the game, not the anime. The anime is not recommended).

Re: How do you like your boats?
I'm not picky - boats in general are enjoyable, and I'd like to see more of them.
I would really like to see a game made by Obryn, Kurald Galain, and Knaight from these forums.
I'm not joking one bit. I would buy the hell out of that. -- ChubbyRain

I'm so confused right now.
Anyhow, I've always liked the age of sail. Wooden ships and iron men and all that.Avatar by Aedilred

I like my boats with U.
Best ships, probably! Not a boat though. Well I guess airboats are pretty cool too, actually.Truth resists simplicity.

Re: How do you like your boats?
On more serious note, I honestly like ships that have a lot of guns and crews and involved in broadside battles or people yelling "turn on forward shield, fire anti-aircraft turret!" that kind of things.
I like battleships almost as much I like fighter ships. I really like the movie Master and Commander, and Memphis Belle.
If you have recommendation on movies, series, or games, involving those kind of things, I'd appreciate it.You got Magic Mech in My Police Procedural!

Re: How do you like your boats?
- I've never seen a game which restricts boats to deep water.
- Boat-specific music is a must, although if I may make a personal observation, more than one track is always highly appreciated. Perhaps have region-specific maritime music?
- In RPGs, I don't really pay attention to the design of the ship, so long as it's generally consistent with the setting.
- Ships should be faster than travelling on foot. Not excessively so, but noticeably faster.
- Size is more of a stylistic choice than anything. I'd go with whatever size is most practical.
- If this thread has been posted in regard to the JRPG you demoed a while back, you might have them be the same size as the character in the overworld area, but much larger than the character in a town (if they can even enter towns whilst on a boat).
- Open disembarking or restricted disembarking...That's more a design choice, I think. In FF1, you could only disembark in certain port areas with the sailboat, which had the effect of heavily gating player movement. In Sid Meier's Pirates!, though, you can disembark anywhere, which is handy because exploration is a not-insignificant feature of the game.

Re: How do you like your boats?
I was partially thinking like FF1, ocean v. river. But yeah, not too close to shore, can't say I've seen that.
Haha, yes it is! I've made a lot of progress (well, with what little free time I have), probably throw out another ideo in a couple weeks. River travel is complete (code and sprites), ocean travel is partially done (sprites mostly done, need to make some minor changes, and coding is almost done), and airship travel has barely begun. Then I'll make the world map and post a video of overworld travel.
Oh, and your other points are noted. Already have tracks for the various movement modes. Appreciated!
And thanks to everyone else for the responses, too.
