"Telling Corpse Witch off," might have been a good place to start. If face-punching proved necessary, she could have escalated her way there instead of leaping straight to it. I'm not a pacifist; I'm not fundamentally opposed to violence as a solution to problems that need violence to solve them. But it should be a last resort, not a first. (And if it's not the last resort, you didn't resort to enough of it.)

TBH I'm not 100% sure if that's an option that's occured to Jeph. This arc hasn't exactly been subtle.

Didn't CW at one point go "I know things about you, so better stay put" at Bubbles? That seems way more like blackmailing... and I'm willing to give it to Faye she can read people well enough to know Bubbles doesn't really like CW much. She's just not a sympathetic character. It'd have to be some kind of Oslo syndrome.

We've already explicitly seen that Bubbles is suffering from survivor's guilt to a significant degree, which could very well be the foundation of this.

Yup. Which strikes me as a bit odd, I know people have been speculating about this for a while, but everything up til now came off as platonic to me. Her co-workers at Coffee of Doom were basically her social circle, and when she was fired that put an awkward distance between her and them. So she found someone who looked vaguely interesting in her new surroundings, decided they were going to be friends, and made it so. This is more or less how the comic started, with Faye moving into town and grabbing onto Marten.

... mind you, there was romantic tension for a little while there, too. So maybe that's a bad analogy. It is entirely possible I'm just oblivious to whatever signs of attraction there've been.

Well, the whole sequence where they went to the apartment to fix Pintsize after he got his head kicked in by a reindeer, Faye was all over Bubbles - touching her, leaning on her, climbing on her, inviting her to comment on her butt, escorting the enormous armored military combat droid safely home... Claire's not wrong here. (At least in the second-to-last panel; I'm not committing to an opinion on the others.)

So when Bubbles' said she couldn't talk about HER horrible memories, after Faye revealed how she'd seen her father shoot himself in front of her, she was speaking literally: She CAN'T talk about them because she doesn't have access to them.

Im wondering what ELSE was suppressed by the witch. Its almost a trope that the bad guy didnt just lock away her bad memories, but the good ones too, and upon finally experiencing them, the hero finds they can move on. Clearly bubbles was left with enough bad memories or at least the knowledge of bad memories to not want to poke at them, and with CW being the uber manipulative piece of garbage she is, it wouldnt shock me in the slightest to find out she stole some important memories from bubbles and is lying about whats there.

I'm unclear on the whole concept of AI gender anyway. Is it the author's position that AI assume a gender identity as a way to assimilate into human culture, or are they programmed with a specific gender identity, or do they tend to adapt to whatever chassis they are downloaded into?

I would imagine they develop a gender identity over time as they learn and grow and experience life. They seem to treat their bodies like we treat our clothes. As evidenced by the wide assortment of options at the apple store they took momo to (I cant recall what it actually was called) They had everything from standard bodies, to specific types to freaking TOASTERS.

My thought is that there is an AI "child" database, where "newborn" AI are placed and grow using Machine Learning techniques to mentally age themselves. During that time, they grow, and develop unique personalities. Upon reaching "adulthood" they choose a basic chassis and a career path and are sent out into the world.

I feel both are possible.. Maybe on initial creation they just spin a sex wheel on what gender the AI identifies as. Or they develop one, based on different stimuli. It's likely if they're not made with one, they'd adopt one because gender still is an important part of human society and they'd be made to fit in. Of course in a few decades genderless AIs might become more widespread.

It's also quite possible that not all AIs have a gender identity at all, but those that regularly interact with humans found out that humans have problem interacting with "it" instead of "he" or "she", so those AIs generally decide on a gender for themselves.
