Default Are there rules for grates?

Didn't ask this in the RAW Q&A because I honestly don't think there rules regarding this.

What happens if one character is behind a grate in relation to characters on the other side?

Lets say the grate is spaced enough so you can see the other side, but not enough so arrows from small sized bows can't go through. Something like this: http://previews.123rf.com/images/qin...tock-Photo.jpg

Do the characters have line of sight or effect through the grate?

Do people on the other side have full cover?

    Thanks!

Use common sense. A Cloudkill is obviously going to have LoE, but hitting someone with a giant axe through the grate would be harder.

Line of Sight is obviously there.

You need a hole of at least 1 square foot in order to have line of effect.
An otherwise solid barrier with a hole of at least 1 square foot through it does not block a spell’s line of effect. Such an opening means that the 5-foot length of wall containing the hole is no longer considered a barrier for purposes of a spell’s line of effect.
If you can see through the grate, then you have line of sight, but the grate probably provides cover.

Line of effect for spells requires a 1' hole to affect anything on the other side without obstruction.

Does the grate have a 1' hole in it? If not, it blocks spells and other abilities that require line of effect.

Hmm interesting. I do plan on using fog-like spells, should I do this, or would it be an a-hole move?

Also, do Power Words spells require LoE?

Also, what about cover? Any ideas.

So if someone has a small outhouse shaped cylinder of chicken wire with holes big enough to thrust a spear or fire a crossbow through levitating around them, they are functionally immune to anything requiring line of effect? Interesting.

RAW, yes, though expect your DM to rule otherwise.
