Well darn! I seem to have missed most of the debate on Harry Potter. I'd just like to add a couple CP to the discussion and say, "The Wizard of Oz." I loved those books as a kid. They got me started in reading and I've never looked back.

Dis, gods no, it's not healthy. Maybe once in awhile, but not every night. Bad, bad, bad... I can't even have a decent day on six hours... Seriously, you should get like eight.

Re: Radikalskippy's Random Banter #85 of lost ideas and where to find them...
Actually, I think the general medical consensus is that teens need 8.5-9 hours of sleep. They are, of course, chronically sleep deprived, which some experts think may account for some of their grumpiness/moodiness.
I will either find a way or make one.

Re: Radikalskippy's Random Banter #85 of lost ideas and where to find them...
I remember reading somewhere that even into the late teenage years, the amount of sleep needed is somewhere closer to 10 or 11 hours a night. So, for those of you needing an excuse for the weekends, go look that up online...
Younger kids need more into the 12 or more hour range.
EDIT: School-aged kids and adolescents need at least 9 hours of sleep a night.Last edited by EmeraldRose; 2007-07-21 at 07:30 PM.

Re: Radikalskippy's Random Banter #85 of lost ideas and where to find them...
Some schools of thought say all literature is variations on a theme of one story (the so-called mono-myth), some say seven...

2. Rags to riches, e.g. Cinderella
3. The quest, e.g. Raiders of the Lost Ark
4. Voyage and return, e.g. The Odyssey
5. Comedy, e.g. The Marriage of Figaro
6. Tragedy, e.g. Macbeth
7. Rebirth, e.g. Sleeping Beauty
...others argue for 36
Spoiler1. Supplication - Persecutor, Suppliant, a Power in Authority
2. Deliverance - Unfortunates, Threatener, Rescuer
3. Revenge - Avenger, Criminal
4. Vengeance by Family upon Family - Avenging Kinsman, Guilty Kinsman, Relative
5. Pursuit - Fugitive from Punishment, Pursuer

14. Familial Rivalry - Preferred Kinsman, Rejected Kinsman, Object
15. Murderous Adultery - Two Adulterers, the Betrayed
16. Madness - Madman, Victim
17. Fatal Imprudence - Imprudent person, Victim or lost object
18. Involuntary Crimes of Love - Lover, Beloved, Revealer

I suppose it comes down to how general or specific you consider a given plot archetype. I've used random combinations of the 36 plots list as idea mines for RPG scenarios for years now.

As for sleep, less than 10 hours a night is unhealthy! Less than 8 begs visitations of psychosis before too long. Re: Radikalskippy's Random Banter #85 of lost ideas and where to find them...
Well, I appear to have missed most of the Harry Potter debate, because I was too busy reading the book. So you can tell where I stand on that subject. Also, I average four hours of sleep a night, and I have no problems that I can tell. My friends tell me that's not healthy, and one of them seriously tried to get me to see a doctor to see if I have insomnia, but I'm fine. Some people just need less sleep, I think. So if you feel fine on 3-5 every night, that's all you need, I'd say. If you're always tired though, then you need of course need to be getting more sleep.

Re: Radikalskippy's Random Banter #85 of lost ideas and where to find them...
I have a feeling it's like low-blood pressure, unless you are exhibiting adverse symptoms you are probably fine. I know I have to sleep between 8 and a half to 10 hours, or less than 3 in order to be awake. Anywhere in between 3 and 8 or more than 10 and I wind up exhausted.

Re: Radikalskippy's Random Banter #85 of lost ideas and where to find them...
I am working a 5 out of every 6 days, at 12 hours each day. I get on average 6-7 hours of sleep each night. It doesn't seem to bother me.
Granted, when I am home, I get more like 7-9, and work quite a bit less, but 6 is about right for me.

Solid 7 hours. Usually need 8-10 though if I walk more then 6 miles that day, which occurs quite often.

Re: Radikalskippy's Random Banter #85 of lost ideas and where to find them...
Heh...obviously the amount of sleep needed will depend on the person, as well age, and variables such as stress or other things going on in life. Children and adolescents need more sleep, and adults need an average of about 8 to 8.5 hours. Or so the article said.
Some people need less, some people need more...it depends.
These days I feel like I can never get enough sleep...

Re: Radikalskippy's Random Banter #85 of lost ideas and where to find them...
Heh, In the mornings, I'm tired. At day, I'm "Meh...", at night, I can't sleep >.<...
And no, I do not consume caffeinated beverages that often. I do tend to get 8-10 hours of sleep. Except in special occasions.
