My guess is that they don't need to necessarily hold their breath, but they need to be able to breathe and take in enough clean air for their abilities to work. This one can't breathe properly cuz of the smoke, but Vis could.

I can't understate how hard it is to naturally detail a magic system when there's no narrator and no logical reason people would explain it to each other half the time. I've done my best to demonstrate it and insert explanations where they make sense, since I long decided I don't want anyone to have to read peripheral material to understand the story, but it definitely makes my job more difficult. Still, rewarding in its own way to watch people speculate, and it's often a good sign of whether or not I've imparted the intended reactions. There's some fiddly nuances that can cause some confusion and I hope to correct that when I get the chance.

You can phrase it as 2 people arguing over how some bit of magic works and try to defend their theories. For example, I remember when I was working at a boy scout camp and I was teaching weather merit badge classes to a bunch of scouts with one other co-worker helping me teach. In the middle of a lesson, we disagreed over the barometer of things and what the "High" pressure and "Low" pressure effects weather how. We began trying to correct each other, but it quickly became apparent that both the other guy and I were dug into our positions. So we then began to argue, for 20 minutes, in front of the class about how the other guy is wrong. But we went a step further since both of us were determined to prove the other guy wrong, we grabbed the markers and the whiteboards and began writing out everything about weather that got us to our own conclusions. It was unscripted and unplanned, but the class of younger scouts were actually furiously scribbling notes on what we were demonstrating as the core logic of our arguments were the same, just only the end result deviated.

Maybe you can have two people trying to do a bit of magic, come to a "disagreement" about how the magic works, and then try to argue their points with most of the points following the same logic. Just thought to use a real life experience of mine to offer an idea.

It's actually kind of fun this way. We learn bits and pieces about the world and what governs it, and we figure things out as we go along.

No, I don't think she's a First Falling... She's not blue like the Stormlady in the flashback. All the other Stormfallen have blue somewhere, but this lady is pure white. Not even just albino, white.

I think "creatures of Shadow" ('shade', IIRC, is another term that came up) is just this world's general term for the undead. It's inclusive of people affected by the Kal-At curse - if that's what it is - but not synonymous.
