Random Rules for a Random Banter
1. Spam. For the purposes of RB, one word posts are generally considered spam. Likewise, posts that are nothing but *actions like this* are also be considered spam. Remember that the quality of the post's content is much better than the speed of your response.
2. This isn't the Play by Post or Town forum, nor is it the Silly Message Board Games or Structured Games forum. Please avoid continuous roleplay or mock battles and fights such as the "competition for control of the universe".
3. If it's already a thread, don't bring it to RB. RB has such a huge range of subject matter even restricted to the little snippets that probably don't warrant their own thread, it doesn't need legitimate thread topics cluttering it up as well. The exception to this is to bring something that is off-topic from one thread, but on-topic for RB and the subject doesn't warrant a thread of its own.
4. Don't advertise other threads in RB. Just because these new threads move at speeds more appropriate to a message board than an IM session doesn't mean you need to come over to RB and brow beat people into posting in your latest brainchild.
5. Please don't post single line posts alerting us to your current status -- as in "I'm back." This is Random Banter, not "How to stalk Random GitP forum members."
6. Don't poke, kick or bump the thread. It will move at whatever pace it wants to. Also, please refrain from Captain Obvious comments akin to "My, the thread is fast today."
7. Random Banter can only be as good, or as entertaining, as you make it. Demands to be entertained will fall on deaf ears unless you can add something more meaningful to the conversation.
8. As this is a public forum, where the current topic is nicely recorded for you, and not a conversation where you could have missed the beginning, please refrain from asking something to the effect of "What's the topic?". Please take the time to read up a bit first.
9. Thread Creator must include the words "Random" and "Banter" as well as the thread #. Try to be concise as well.
10. Every post should contain two visible, legible complete sentences, Subject and Predicate. C'mon, make your old English teachers proud.
11. Remember, Random Banter is not your IM client. If you want to have a back and forth discussion with just one person, look in their contact information for IM details.
12. Whenever a new thread is created, all "first post", "first page", and all posts of that nature will be deleted by the administrators. Please avoid doing this, as it is frustrating for them to deal with one-lined posts like this.
13. Double-posting is not your friend. We have edit buttons for a reason.
14. Once you have made a Random Banter thread, you must wait 50 threads before making another one.
15. If you can avoid dibs calling on making the next thread, that will avoid people needing to wait if the thread hits 50 pages while the dibs-caller is asleep.Last edited by WarKitty; 2016-12-10 at 07:00 PM.

Well, I might as well get my cat tax out of the way early.
From the house of Shadow, our SPCA rescue cats:
Siri, who listens roughly about as well as her original namesake.

And (named after Garviel, for all you 40k fans) Loken, who is no longer scared of everything - including his own shadow. And I don't mean me Shadow.

We're doing cat tax?
Spoiler: Cool; have a Squint
We found his mother pregnant off the streets, half starved. We took her in (putting an ample amount of found signs online and around the area), then a week later she delivers 7 kittens, including this little runt. Not seen here is his eye infection that gave him the name Squint.
A few years later, we have Big Squint:

The heavier my courseload, the more inexorably drawn towards the internet am I.
I was about to say this only applies around finals, but honestly, I've been lurking on the forum significantly more than usual these past ten weeks, and given that this is the quarter I ended up somehow taking 19/15 credits, the system holds!Spoiler: This signature is a historical relic from a long-ago time of regular forum activity.Aww man! My brain hurts. I've got two retake exams tomorrow... haven't read to either. I'm just too tired. Blargh. It's starting to look like I'm not going to graduate on time. Here's hoping my thesis will be a smooth one, that whole process starts after Christmas.

Re: WarKitty's Feline Frenzy Random Banter #216
Ooo, he has beautiful green eyes.
Oh my god there's a MoonCat.
(And yes, I'm counteracting my statement from the previous thread.)
What is this "graduate on time" that you're talking about?
Alternatively, don't worry, in my field, you're considered to be on time if you graduate within one year of your predicted graduation date.
ION:
After having been given a fire safety course on my job, I realised I should probably check the batteries of my fire alarm. Turns out the little red lamp flashing once a minute wasn't an "I'm okay" status lamp, but rather an "I'm too low on juice to even beep at you". Whoops.
IOON:
I got myself Pokémon Moon as an early Christmas present, and, well, the character customisation options managed to make me annoyed enough to restart the game several hours into it. Fun fact: I identify myself less by my skin colour than my hair colour and general attitude, so out of the four available initial looks (technically eight, but I decided to go as a boy), I picked the one which matched these two the best. Of course, a few hours into the game (there are so many cutscenes), I realise you'll be able to change all traits except skin colour (and sex). I should have seen this coming, but still, they managed to make me flip from "I'm fine with this representing me" to "this does not feel like me at all" in the turn of a second, which is quite impressive.
Then, when I restart the game, I realise that Mom has a set appearance and that I just managed to pick the one matching hers initially. It's not really important, but because I was so appearance conscious at that point, it caused quite a bit of cognitive dissonance at first...
Otherwise it's great, though (even if the camera angle makes it hard to see where you're going sometimes).
IOOON:
Thinking of getting started with my Raspberry Pi, and realised that I lack a monitor apart from my laptop, and a MicroSD reader on the same. This will require some amounts of creativity...
EDIT:
Turns out I need third party software for that, so I'll probably hold off on this for now. May drop by my family to use the TV for a while, though. That should also provide me with an Internet connection which doesn't cannibalise my computer's...Last edited by Teddy; 2016-12-11 at 07:59 AM.

Re: WarKitty's Feline Frenzy Random Banter #216
Not only that, but Mom's name is actually Mom. That's the way it's set in the game code, and as such everyone calls her that as if it's her given name.

So, a friend of mine recently pointed out that I had Greenlight Developer Access on my Steam wishlist. To be honest, I really don't use the wishlist properly or all that much, and I hadn't even considered that the wishlist would be viewable by others. Heck, I still had Dragon Age II on my wishlist, and that was removed from Steam in 2011! I realised then that it would be possible that some people might see the wishlist and buy some games for me based on that, so I've removed a whole chunk I no longer want or can never remember ever actually wanting, but it still doesn't reflect everything I am interested in.
As for how Greenlight Developer Access got on the list? Well, that's kind of a long story... As a programmer, I go to a lot of events for game developers and I've made contacts with a lot of artists, modellers, sound designers, composers, and other programmers. When I heard that Greenlight Developer Access could be gifted and wishlisted, I decided to wishlist it to get notified if it ever dropped in price (spoiler, in the two years it has been on my wishlist, no notification has been sent). Again, I was not considering that others could see my wishlist at the time, and then promptly forgot about it.
While I was clearing out my wishlist, I decided to keep it on there as I still want to be notified if it ever changes in price. I made myself a promise as I did so: I have all of the necessary industry contacts, so if someone does see it as an extremely strong desire to own Greenlight Developer Access, I will team up with these contacts to make and release a game!

Re: WarKitty's Feline Frenzy Random Banter #216
... which makes it look kinda weird when your cousin, the Professor, calls her out by name. I got over that bit of cognitive dissonance on my first run, though. In this case, I find it more annoying how other people refer to your front Pokémon by its species name, and not by the nickname you've given it, even when they reasonably should know its nickname.
Also, I'm sad that the keyboard doesn't support non-English characters (but the extended keyboard has ~20 different keys for making a space), meaning I can't use Swedish names without many of them looking stupid...Clouddreamer Teddy by me, high above the world, far beyond its matters...

It's still too rich for my blood, but if anyone likes classic Dungeons and Dragons games, this kit on GOG has you covered, 50% off if you buy the lot at once. While I haven't actually played any of them myself yet, I'm told that there are some absolutely fantastic games in there (if you don't mind playing older games).

I'll try to just lurk until Thread #217. Unfortunately, I am

Re: WarKitty's Feline Frenzy Random Banter #216
That threw me off my first time. Majorly. It wasn't until other people told me later (thankfully I went in mostly-blind, so I had people who wanted to hear reactions, so could actually tell me the idioms...) that I realized, because I was going "WHAT KIND OF FAMILY TREE IS THIS? NO, SERIOUSLY. WHAT KIND?" I had actually restarted the game, to make sure I'd seen it right, because it took a few moments to register.
What also threw me off the first time was having to press A to open doors. Took me a good few days before I was used to not opening doors by dint of running into them facefirst. I'm sorry, player character. The stars predict tomorrow you'll wake up, do a bunch of stuff, and then go back to sleep.~ That's your horoscope for today.

The job markets for my field of work are at their best if I graduate in May (though I'm not graduating this coming spring, 2018 is the target but same thing applies). A lot of the jobs start around July to September. I mean I could get a job right before I graduate (I think it's possible to extend it to July or November or whatever the thing is) but I'd rather have my proper papers when I walk into the Scary Working World™. Truer words have never been spoken.
Good luck!
Though I will confirm:
They might as well just call it a 5-year undergraduate, given how many people take an extra year to finish up.
Well, that's a hell of a marketing gimmick. I wonder if steam will even be around 17 years from now?Avatar by FinnLassie

Did the dev of that game give up and run and try to lock it out and think no one would notice?

Re: WarKitty's Feline Frenzy Random Banter #216
So, it was released three days ago and it's locked for 17 years? Why? Is there a joke about this game in particular I've been missing, or Steam as a whole?
(I've been so thoroughly distracted from gaming as a whole that last two games I've found time to play have been Undertale and Long Live the Queen. I'm way out of it.)
Amazing how suddenly I've found time to review TvTropes pages on mid-20th-century movie musicals lately.
On an unrelated note, there is a dearth of good fanfic on My Fair Lady.
And everybody should go rewatch A Funny Thing Happened On the Way to the Forum.

Ah, the sweet smell of a fresh thread.
In unrelated news, I will soon be required to wear woodland camouflage, even though I live on a military base in the middle of the desert. No doubt this is to make us really good at hiding in the shrubs, as opposed to all the sand that we have around here. It's an oddly specific strategy, but I'm sure we'll adapt.
And in other news, I've started watching Star Trek (the original series), after watching Next Generation and Deep Space Nine. Man, this show had...no budget.Last edited by DraPrime; 2016-12-11 at 08:28 PM.
