    [Into the Bog]

To travel into the bog at night, they say, is to meet the nightmares that plague mankind. To come face to face with monsters and abominations that feed upon the blood, the sanity, and the flesh of man. Walking the mist-covered marsh reduces most brave warriors to blubbering fools; it turns the fairest maiden into an aged croon; it sucks the imagination and future out of a suckling babe. To march into the wetlands at night is a certain way to meet the horrors that plague Evesgate.

Luckily, that was who you were going to meet.

That is not to say there were not other dangers to the swamp. It was true that it had an unhallowed aura, that it implanted emotions of fear and thoughts of escape into the minds of lesser men. However, you and Rothlo were anything but 'lesser men'. You found that, long ago, there was no escape from your path, your oath. Whatever life you had before this was missing, gone, forever eclipsed by your Lady. And Rothlo seemed immune to any form of thought- or soul-influencing magics, both benevolent and harmful. He stands stoically in his armor, as if the miasma of the Bog was nothing more than a fleeting itch.

The carriage you arrived upon could travel no further; the road, as it reaches the wetland proper, descends into the soupy, murky liquid the rest of the terrain succumbs to.

You enter the swamp in silence except for the sloshing, sucking noise of periodic footfalls. You travel on with the same sound. Soon you realize the wildlife has gone silent; soon after you find Rothlo has stopped walking altogether.

He's standing on a short footbridge between two half-sunken islands of reeds and squat, healthy trees. He is staring deep into the murky, mist-covered darkness to the south.

"Hold, Doppel. There's something near." The warrior knocks an arrow and crouches behind the short handrail at his side.

You know of his skill which allows him to sense magic. It was one of the things that drew him to you so long ago, when you first met. However, it didn't take his Eerie to determine there was some amiss about the moments that crawled by as you stood on the footbridge between two boggy isles. Something was watching you; you could sense yourself in the reflection of its eyes.

((You have two rounds before something else happens. Roll initiative now anyway. You can spend one of the two rounds refocusing, like Rothlo, to max initiative. If your initiative is under 15, you don't act in the surprise round.))

Edmund looks around at the too-quiet bog.
"I concur." Edmund stops at the edge of the bridge and crouches down, quickly sketching out a binding in the soil. "Now is the time, here is the place. Come to me, Ronove...." An iron sarcophagus rattles up from the ground bearing a smiling visage. The door opens and Ronove slips into Edmunds' shadow as the iron maiden fades away into the Gossamer. He dusts his hands off and then removes his gloves, stowing them in a coat pocket.
"Come out, Come out, wherever you are...." Edmund croons. He opens his mind, attuning himself to ebb and flow of primitive thoughts surrounding him. As he advances towards Rothlo on the bridge he scans the area. His eyes turn chrome and blaze with silvery light.

A few tense moments pass and something passes into your range. The creature's mind is alien to you, but filled without self-awareness for the silvery thread of light that connects it to the Outside to appear in your mind's eye. The creature's head is just cresting the top of the water at the edge of your vision, the low hanging fog between you and it occluding any specific details.

The creature moves languidly, in a way reminiscent of serpents, as it slowly zig-zags towards you. Soon it is within sixty feet, and the first round of its desires fade into being. Phantom emotions and insistent urgings reveal the creature is self-aware in a way that reminds you of speaking in the third person.

The creature moves forward slowly, effortlessly in the thick, muddy waters of the bog. It slowly rises out of the depths as it closes to forty feet. The creature looks like a broad-shouldered anthropomorphic alligator with a long, serpentine body. It's flat head and chest are covered in rich ocher scales, while the rest of its head and limbs are a dark gray. Its mouth is parted slightly, and three rows of sharp teeth, much like a shark's, encase its broad maw. A forked tongue, ocher as its scales, flicks left and right as it approaches.

The monstrous creature bursts into motion, launching itself out of the murky depths. It is much longer than you anticipated, and its wide maw and razor-sharp claws reach towards you menacingly.

However, your ability to read its desires coupled with years of conflict and Rothlo's significant combat experience allow you to both react before its deadly natural weapons come to bear.

Rothlo looses an arrow at the creature then deftly rolls to the side, putting distance between the creature and himself. While rolling, he drops the bow and pulls free a battleaxe.

Mr. Doppel strides towards the creature with preternatural speed, raising his hand in an arcane gesture. With his off-hand Edmund raises his pinky and index finger like bull horns and thrusts them at the creatures' midsection, releasing a burst of force. He fades as he closes the distance, disappearing into the gossamer during the approach.

Alligator Will Save vs Bungle: (1d20-1)[9]
I don't like static CMD, so let's roll it. (1d20+15)[23], -20 if he fails his save.
If he is pushed back, he cannot charge Rothlo. Instead, reduce his attack roll by 2.
Alligator's Charge attack on Rothlo: (1d20+11)[22] vs AC 10 + Armor Use check (Rothlo is flat footed)

    Rothlo Armor Use:
(1d20+9)[20] (Half result, rounded down, -5 is bonus to AC.)

Alligator Bite Damage: (2d6+9)[18], if charge occurred then +(2d6)[9] from Powerful Charge.

EDIT: Alligator is 35 feet away. He is pushed back 20 feet. That results in him having to take a double move to reach Rothlo, and so no attack is made.

The massive scaled beast raises up onto his tail and is about to lunge forward when it is hit square with your blast of force. Taken by surprise, the creature fails to hold itself upright and is sent sailing backward almost two dozen feet before crashing into a half-rotten tree trunk and murky pool of mud. The creature rights itself quickly, and speeds along the water's surface towards its prey.

Rothlo grunts as he pulls a large shield free from his back and rushes to meet the monster at the edge of the walkway. He feints left and rolls to the right, rising to his feet with a deftness that doesn't match his apparent age. A brutal slash with his axe carves a clean crescent through the handrail of the short bridge as he attempts to cut away pieces of the monstrous reptile.

Edmund scuttles up behind the creature and whirls about, flashing into reality behind the beast. He calmly adjusts his coat collar and then lashes out with his fist towards the back of its knees and opens his mind, unleashing a torrent of psychic screeches, growls and curses in Aklo and Infernal, hammering at the creatures' mind.
