In D&D, the Abyss has an infinite number of layers, each one different in their hellish landscape. There are freezing plains, burning lakes, torture as far as the eye can see, what have you.

On the subject of Belkar being Snarl killed, it would make sense as a full circle to the order of the scribble. Kraagor was a barbarian, and belkar has levels of barbarian and acts like one, meaning that it would only make sense for him to be the casualty
