Maybe that's what Fyron's Crown really is. A portable receiver for satellite internet.
OK, I laughed hard at the end there.

I'd think dropping Comcast would be the better option in that scenario.

To be fair, a lot of places have few, if any, choice.

I know, I've been living in such a place for two decades now (there's not even enough bandwidth out here to reliably stream Netflix; Mom still does the DVDs-in-the-mail thing). Alternatives do exist, but they're not at all cost-effective...something that would change drastically if my ISP started charging an extra $600 a year.

My response to people saying "X isn't on Netflix" is "it is if you get the DVDs."

What is the turnaround on those? I.e. how long from the moment you decide you want to watch X until you actually can?

    Thanks,

From the details I remember from Mom...you set up a queue of movies on their site, and they mail you the DVD in an envelope you can mail back when you've watched it. When they get the envelope with the DVD back, they mail you the next one in your queue. And so on.

I think the turnaround time (around here at least, I'm sure postal service responsiveness varies from place to place) is a few days, maybe a week?

2-3 days for me. Usually 2.

I should also note here that I've always had ridiculously fast service via USPS, and I've always wondered what people are talking about when they gripe about snail mail being slow. I dunno, maybe I've just always been lucky.

I remember considering it when I got Netflix, and ended up going with online-only because there were news at a time of Netflix axing the mail service. But if it's just 2 days, it means I can plan on Wednesday what I want for the weekend. Maybe I need to consider it again.

I can understand the frustration of living somewhere with limited access to the Internet, but one should recognize the difference between "I don't have access to these great pieces of media" and "they don't exist".

Looking at the DVD plans, there's one for $5 a month which gets you 2 DVDs. This seems like a bad deal because you can rent movies on Google Play for about the same price. However, there's an $8 plan with unlimited movies, and with a 3 day turnaround, that's up to 10 movies a month, which is a pretty good deal. I may have to do that, I know my mom uses it and loves it.

You mean, I can see what they think is good, and then watch something else? I watch the news and see that shows I've never even heard of won Best Series and Best Actor awards. Where the heck are these shows and who, other than the critics, is watching them?

I'm just going to give up on television other than Cartoon Network and the news and stick to watching film, I guess. If they want me to watch, they know where I am.

I mean, at least as far as this is concerned, this particular spoiler isn't too major... but still.

By my understanding, the bigger reason to not get the DVD service is the outlandish prices they charge for it. Ultimately, only you can decide if youre willing to fork over the money for it, but in my less than humble opinion, it isn't worth the value you get.

I kept it for a long while after the split (still mad about the split, bytheway), because of what I already said; just about everything is on Netflix, if you're willing to get the discs.

Enough time without really using it meant it got the axe, though.
