It didn't have a name. It was a bird.

After a few minutes, another set of words flashed on screen:

My mom and dad had a dog before I was born. When I was little, it died, and I cried a lot over it. So I don't name my pets anymore.

I'm sorry to hear that. It's always sad to lose someone you love, even if they are just a pet.

Apologies, appeared on the screen after a few moments of silence.

I don't need the sympathy honestly. I don't remember the dog, and my bird is just a bird. But I imagine losing a family member would be... unpleasant.

Right. I actually have a few sources that might be useful for that.

    What was that?

Otoha highlighted the text, copied it - just in time. A second later, the string of 0's and 1's had vanished, replaced with proper, readable text.

Otoha fowned, transposing the numbers into a word document, her notepad and her tape recorder.
That was odd. Not just the random set of numbers -that was strange on it's own- but the fact that she edited it. Maybe there was a problem with her keyboard?

She dismissed that thought at once. Most people probably wouldn't go to the effort of editing themselves; they'd probably apologise, blame the keyboard, and then finish what they were saying. And even if there was some insane glitch that replaced flipped Aelita's alphabetical and numerical keys... the numbers didn't add up. They were -she did a quick count - 33 random numbers. They definitely didn't correspond to the words she said afterwards.

Actually... were they random? Otoha frowned, looking at the numbers again. They looked like a random string, but...

"...Mystery deepens," she said aloud to her recorder. She tapped her chin, wondering exactly what to do about it. No one else had commented on anything after all..

How long is left of spring break? she asked idly. Studying all day is not what I thought the "American Spring Break" experience entailed.

She opened another window, typing quickly, and pressing send.

Don't talk college. I don't want to think about that.

It was actually a bigger problem, really. Not only had Otoha not decided what she wanted to study for college, she hadn't decided which college to go to... or, more accurately, which college on which side of the world to go to. Japan or America. It was a harder choice than it maybe should have been...

Suppose I should start buying things to send back home. Tourism. I still don't really know the sights too well though.

Well, learning a trade costs money too. But there's student loans and grants, and so many scholarships that you are bound to get at least one... Don't just write off college. The future isn't just coming anymore. It's here. We have started making computers with processors that border on precognition, we've started making artificial intelligences that do more than just turn into angry internet trolls. Honestly, at some point, we will start talking to an AI and never know the difference! But by the gods, when that day comes, I want either my dream Persocom, or full immersion VR, or something. I want my AI to be able to interact with me. Know what I mean?

I can't argue about the AI part, though. That's a topic I've actually been interested in for a while. I honestly quite like the thought that there might eventually be more nonhumans to talk to. I mean, there are a few already - including my own kind, of course - but not many. This is a society designed by and for humans, and not many people take the rest of us into account. Maybe if nonhumans become more common - such as through the development of AIs, whether deliberate or accidental - there will actually be a place for us."

Otoha looked away from her private chat, wondering how to continue, and found herself faced with a scrollbar of new messages in the group chat. She read over them, clicking her tongue.

Honestly, I think interacting with your AI is going to be the least of your concerns: when/if AI technology happens, it's going to cause societal upheaval in ways we probably can't even begin to think about.

You're probably going to think I'm the "stereotypical cynical reporter" archetype, but...

The creation of AI is going to raise a whole host of issues and concerns:
-Ethically: Are they real people? Are they something else entirely?)
-Morally (Is deleting an AI murder? What about re-programing them? How do you prosecute someone of a crime against an artificial person, or vice-verse?)
    - Legally (Why rights does a digital person have? Would copy-pasting them be copy-right infringement, cloning, worse?)
-Religiously (what does this mean for the afterlife? Do AI have a soul?)...

That's just on the AI side of things, and just what I can ramble off the top of my head. Frankly, if I found out someone had created an AI, I'd probably do exactly what Kaya said: start digging and find out everything about everyone involved. After all, we'd be talking about probably the biggest leap forward our species has taken since the creation of fire, and there are some very shady implications that could be at work.

I mean, I guess a lot of those questions depend on what exactly the AI is. There's a difference between a scientific AI, designed solely to gain more knowledge by learning, a military AI, designed to adapt to field conditions, and a personal AI, that's designed simply to be life. Wouldn't you agree?

Exactly. I would love to know a personal AI. To have someone who would get me so perfectly... I don't think it would be a huge ethical issue. Maybe if someone made an army of killer AIs and we had to figure out what to do. Maybe then, but for now, it's just about the only silly dream I have.
