Re: THEChanger's Curse of the Crimson Throne: Edge of Anarchy
Carla
The boat, Carla thinks, and rushes towards it. She starts preparing it as she hears the splash and the sound of swimming, and turns towards them, losr in confusion. Why.. what was he.... the boat is right there, dammit!
The confusion and rapid developments paralyze her with indecision, much to her shame. She only barks a likely unnecessary warning and does not even get to the rope in time. She watches Dirkust's "ritual" with some interest, moving in to steady the man when he appears to fall. She waits for the lady to speak with the soldier to see if the man has managed to steady himself. She was curious how he was shot down - either heavier ranged weapons or magic in the hands of the rioters were bad news. In the meantime, she goes towards Gavin and whispers a near-silent "I blanked there for a bit. Sorry about that."Mr.Shizzles avatar by The Gremlin. Thanks!

Re: THEChanger's Curse of the Crimson Throne: Edge of Anarchy
"The King!" The Marine tries to rise, and groans, sinking back to one knee. "I think I need some help. My name is Sargent Kessel Bromathan. My patrol was assigned to cover the docks, make sure the rivers were clear in case the Queen needed to escape the riots by water. I need to report in." His eyes look over each of you in turn, stopping on Mordin. Even the least observant can now see that the armor Mordin wears bears a strong stylistic resemblance to the marine's, though Mordin's is far more ornate. "I'd appreciate an escort back to Citadel Volshyenek, as my legs haven't quite remembered how to work. It's not too far. Though perhaps you're headed that way already, Sir?"

Re: THEChanger's Curse of the Crimson Throne: Edge of Anarchy
Weakly, Gavin lifts a hand up and gives Carla a reassuring pat on the arm - they were good as far as he was concerned.
When the marine started to question Mordin, it was clear even to Gavin that things were about to get very, very awkward.
Either Mordin was a legitimate officer in the Sable Marines, and was here without permission, or he had gotten his hands on somebody else's armor.
Regardless, it was going to be a problem unless somebody came up with an explanation, quick.
Gavin coughs loudly, dragging himself up onto his feet as he fumbles for his dagger and tucks it into his belt.
Spoiler: Bluff
Not sure if this should be a separate bluff or helping roll for Vestis/Avrin who have the higher overall modifier.
To-Hit: (1d20+7)[11]
Desperate to say something to fill the void, Gavin wheezes out the first thing that comes out to mind.
"Not quite, sergeant. We were - *hacking cough* - escorting Milady here. Wherever . . . she wants to go, I guess? And just sort of picking up strays along the way, like that guy. Had a run-in with some angry people earlier, so we're taking him with us."
Gavin says, pointing at the unconscious Yargin, apparently hoping that by focusing attention on the beaten unconscious guy, he would distract the sergeant's attention away from his "superior officer"?Last edited by Inspectre; 2017-04-29 at 11:05 PM.

"It would be more accurate to say that Sir Mordin was escorting our mistress, Lady Selancourte away from the rioting. The Diva is visiting from Cheliax and got caught up in this horrid mess. This vile brigand tried accosting her as we were escaping the riot, but Sir Mordin managed to vanquish him before his compatriates scattered."

Re: THEChanger's Curse of the Crimson Throne: Edge of Anarchy
Lady Selancourte
Asmodeus help us, that wasn't good, Vestis thought, when first Gavin then Ardino cut in to provide the Marine with slightly different explanations on what they were doing here.
The fool had already dropped her name, so that much was spoken for.
"Forgive my servants prattling on, Sargent Bromathan." she said, giving the others a stern glance, mostly for appearance' sake. Mostly.
"They are, understandably, a bit flustered currently. We hadn't exactly expected a riot."
That much was true.
"I had hoped we could make it back to my uncle's mansion;" she continued.
"These are some properties I need, and would loathe to leave behind. Although our private performance is probably cancelled for tonight." This was, at least, the easiest way to explain away the chest and the sack they were carrying, and, implicitly, which was the best way to explain something, also the rather... unusual clothing her supposed servants were currently wearing. She took care to gesture a bit with her right hand, so the Marine could see her golden breastplate underneith her embroidered cloak, hoping she being in costume herself would help the impression. As for the docks, there were, after all, reasonable trading stations, too, so she left the Marine to put two and two together that they had picked up much needed properties for the performance tonight. That they would open for a noblewoman at such a late hour probably wasn't too unbelievable as well, Vestis hoped.
"You consider it possible her majesty has to flee the riots? Is the situation truly that dire? Are you sure you want to go to Citadel Volshyenek, then? The guard isn't exactly competent, so it might fall quite quickly, if you deem even castle Korvosa itself to be in danger. Or has the Order of the Nail secured the area?" Providing a stream of questions herself was sure to steer his attention away from the reason and circumstances of them being here at the docks. Not that he had much reason to truly doubt those who had saved him from death, anyway. "In any case, I would prefer if we didn't linger here longer than necessary. We will escort you to safety, though. There must be some units nearby who can take you with them. Sir Mordin?" She turned to look at Sir Mordin, who had already been called that by Ardino, so it was too late to be more vague. It would be suspicious if the man Sargent Bromathan had directly spoken to and who he obviously saw as his superior just kept his silence. This way, she gave him the opportunity to simply go along with her suggestion, they could drop off the Marine with the nearest unit of guardsmen and be on their merry way. That, at least, was the plan.
Spoiler: Rolls
Since the sable Marines are stationed in Castle Korvosa in the Heights, I get a +1 to my bluff roll, I suppose. -1 if he somehow doesn't know Vestis.

Re: THEChanger's Curse of the Crimson Throne: Edge of Anarchy
Avrin smiles slightly at Lady Selencourte's performance. He's always been one to appreciate a good lie, regardless of who tells it, and the Lady's story is exactly the sort of nonsense anyone would expect of an overly-wealthy bunch of nobles. He remains behind the main group, slouching slightly to avoid attracting any attention away from Vestis' story and nodding along, doing his best to look like an obsequious servant. When he speaks, it is with a mild Chelish accent, something he has spent some time practicing in the event he ever needs to take advantage of his own Cheliaxian ancestry, however dubious it might be. "Right you are, Milady. Best to get back to... Civilization before the disrespectful louts breaking the peace catch wind of us." He bows slightly, hoping the Marine takes him as a bodyguard or other servant, since his weaponry is about the only part of his clothing that might be mistaken for an actor's costume.
Spoiler: OOC
Vestis is clearly taking point on this particular bluff, so Avrin will simply attempt to reinforce her claims and Aid Another her bluff check. I should be able to Take 10 to do so automatically, but if not I just need to avoid rolling a 1 on a d20... (1d20+8)[18]

Carla
In the dim light, Carla hopes that her frown wonŽt stand out too much. Great - that design was quite similar to what marines are wearing, so it is normal that the soldier would be confused. LetŽs just hope the rest can bull**** him well enough, because IŽm pretty sure IŽd make a mess of it, she thinks, as she tries to assume her best wary bodyguard posture and tries not to make the bag on her shoulder too obvious. In the meantime, she is keeping an eye on the surroundings, just in case some group of rioters starts heading their way.Last edited by The_Shaman; 2017-05-01 at 04:42 PM.

Mordin gives a short affirmative grunt in response to Vestis and Avrin, and the Marine slowly nods. "I...see. Well. Certainly, the Lady Selancourte should have an escort through the streets tonight. Apologies for not bowing, m'lady, but my legs aren't quite steady enough yet." He stands, slowly, but obviously quite steady. "And I can assure you, nowhere in the city will be safer than the Citadel tonight, excepting the Castle itself. It's not called a Citadel because it's got nice holes in its walls rioters can just walk through, after all. But, if you can get me to a guard regiment, or to the Citadel itself, I'd be exceptionally grateful."

Re: THEChanger's Curse of the Crimson Throne: Edge of Anarchy
Gavin suppresses a smile at the marine's not-entirely-subtle jab at Vestis.
Clearly, he shared the common sentiment among the guard and marines that the city's nobility was nothing more than a giant collective pain in the ass.
Still, at least Vestis was here in person, instead of sending the lackey of a lackey to deal with Lamm and hunt for this missing girl - that elevated her above most nobles in Gavin's eyes.
But the marine knew none of that, and probably shouldn't learn any of that - fortunately Vestis had saved them all with some well-crafted excuses.
Going over to his dropped gear, Gavin buckles his rapier back on, and slings his pack over his sodden shoulder, ignoring the protest of his exhausted muscles.
His cloak, however, he offers to the marine with a shaking hand.
"Don't think *cough* we should start a fire right here to warm up. Enough of those about already."
Gavin says, subtly motioning with his other hand behind the cloak for Vestis and "Sir" Mordin to lead the group onward in the general direction of the Citadel and Zellara's house.
The quicker they got rid of this marine now that his life was saved, the better.
It would be a real waste if Gavin had to kill the man he just saved.
But if it was necessary to keep him from figuring out they were all a bunch of thieves and murderers and called for the guards they were about to turn him over to, well . . . Gavin wasn't going back to Longacre. He wasn't.
The easier solution would, of course, have been to let the marine just drown and spare them all the risk of discovery.
But . . . Gavin couldn't have done that either.
The city guard was one thing, but the marines had a bit higher and well-deserved reputation - that should be worth something.
Almost as an afterthought, Gavin unties the end of the rope still wrapped around his waist, and offers it back to Ardino.
"T-thanks."
He wheezes, his voice still hoarse and keeping a persistent shiver to it as the cool night air continued to settle around Gavin's damp clothes.
He really was looking forward to starting up a fire when they got back to Zellara's.Last edited by Inspectre; 2017-05-01 at 10:03 PM.

Dirkust shut his mouth as the others started lying through their teeth. Lei always knew when he was lying, he didn't trust himself lying to a stranger. He slowly worked his way to the back of their little pack, avoiding the Marine's eyes. He wanted to mention something to Vestis, but he didn't trust himself to say it subtly enough.

Re: THEChanger's Curse of the Crimson Throne: Edge of Anarchy
Lady Selancourte
There appeared a little smile on her face. "Why, Sargent Bromathan, you are a shining beacon of wit so shortly after your near demise!" she complimented him, almost sincerely. Her features, then, took on a rather mournful expression. "But I can tell you are only trying to put me at ease. Every fortification has nice holes in its walls, after all - they are commonly called doors and gates, if I'm not gravely mistaken, and whose responsibility do you think it is to keep those closed and secure?" Lady Selancourte inclined her head a little to the side, looking at the Marine as if expecting an answer, then turning to the others.
"We should depart. The dear Sargent can ponder that on the way."
And so she started to walk in the direction of Zellara's house.Last edited by aberratio ictus; 2017-05-02 at 12:54 AM.

Re: THEChanger's Curse of the Crimson Throne: Edge of Anarchy
Mordin has contributed little to the conversation with the sergeant, because he is quite overwhelmed by the web of lies unfolding with him at the center. Amazed by the quick wits of the others in the group, he gratefully goes along with their design.
When the Lady starts to walk, he follows her closely, trying to mimic what he thinks a bodyguard might look like (drawing his sword and gazing suspiciously down any dark alleyways the Lady passes). He still doesn't speak a word to the Sergeant, nor does he remove the helmet still covering his face. Hopefully their new companion will simply assume that he is a man of few words, devoted solely to his duty.

Re: THEChanger's Curse of the Crimson Throne: Edge of Anarchy
Sargent Bromathan grunts, and nods to Carla in recognition of her words. The group begins to move towards Zellara's home, following a path by the docks, hoping to avoid the worst of the rioting and the fires.
Avrin's sharp eyes are the first to notice, but after about ten minutes of walking, you all can see a horse-drawn wagon pulled up to a warehouse - a warehouse with its door broken open. Four mean looking thugs, perhaps dock workers or seamen, are pulling crates from the warehouse. On the wagon sits another burly man, and a much smaller, better dressed man. Clearly their leader, he shouts to the men loading up the crates. "Careful with that! We don't want to blow ourselves sky high. Who knows what weird things those Arkonas had shipped over from Vudra."
Given their shifty attire, furtive movements, and the manner in which they referred to the Arkonas, it is fairly easy to deduce that these men are not employed by the august family, or at least are not acting in any official capacity. Looters, as it were. They do not appear to have noticed you yet.ATTENTION ANYONE WHO I'M PLAYING WITH:

Re: THEChanger's Curse of the Crimson Throne: Edge of Anarchy
Mordin sighs inwardly as he spots the looters. He holds out a gloved hand to halt the group's progress. Alright...the sergeant assumes I'm a Sable Marine, so I guess I have to act the part.
Another voice cuts in: It's not as much of an act as you think... I see who you are...I see who you could be...
He shudders slightly, still far from used to these intrusions within his mind. He turns to Vestis and speaks, trying to adapt a tone and vocabulary that fits a high-standing Marine: "My Lady, I am sorry to delay us further, but I fear we are required to deal with this situation before it escalates. Given the state the city is in, attempts to arrest these criminals would be...impractical. I suggest we either chase them off or take them down."
With that, Mordin starts to advance towards the wagon.

Re: THEChanger's Curse of the Crimson Throne: Edge of Anarchy
Avrin crouches down slightly and grips his crossbow as he spots the looters ahead, noting the potential for trouble. He's about to suggest that the group find a different way around to avoid trouble when he hears one of the thugs ahead speak about potentially exploding and his eyes narrow. Looting is one thing; if anything, Avrin approves of relieving the fat nobles of a little of their undeserved wealth wherever possible, but if a bunch of thugs are stealing alchemical explosive or incendiaries from the Arkonas... Well, that's an entirely different story. A story that ends with a thousand Korvosans dead and half the district burnt to the ground. Not something he can just overlook, if it's the case. He's about to call for the group to halt so he can scout ahead when Mordin takes matters into his own hands, charging towards the scene like some sort of avenging knight, getting far too involved with his role as a Marine officer. With a shrug, Avrin shoulders the crossbow again and draws his sword with a flourish, turning towards Vestis as he does. "By your leave, M'lady, we'll deal with this lawbreaking scum."
Without waiting for an answer he turns and begins following Mordin, hoping that a show of force and a little bluster will be enough to convince the looters to give up and leave without a fight... But more than a little worried that these might be some of Lamm's rebels, and thus not disposed at all to reason.

Lady Selancourte
Lady Selancourte stopped abruptly once she noticed the carriage and the looters. 'A clear and present danger?' Well... not exactly. Judging from their words, they did not even know what they were stealing, with it being explosives only the guess of a paranoid thief. If they wanted to make the mistake of stealing from the Arconas, who was she to stop them? "I agree. We shall..." 'take a detour', she was going to say, before Sir Mordin cut her off.
She managed to keep a look of bewilderment out of her eyes, but only barely. "Of course. Do your duty, Sir Mordin." she responded instead, solemnly.
To Ardinos and Avrins 'request', she graciously nodded her assent. "Sir Mordin might be in need of your support, so go right ahead."
For the moment, she was going to stay a little back, before glancing at the others who had stayed behind, then adressing them with a slight smile. "I suppose we are safer if we do not stay too far behind, wouldn't you agree?" she said, making it appear through her tone of voice, the trace of excitement and her facial expression that she was more interested in seeing Sir Mordin in action than that being her concern. She slowly started walking after them as well. The thugs were many, and she would probaby have to support Sir Mordin, Avrin and Ardino with her Magic, if they were to deal with the situation and walk away unscathed.

Re: THEChanger's Curse of the Crimson Throne: Edge of Anarchy
Gavin hadn't noticed the looters at all until their ringleader called attention to himself by announcing that their stolen cargo was potentially dangerous.
He wasn't a real guardsman anymore, so he didn't feel the pressing need to stop such thievery, especially when the victim in question was a noble house with a questionable reputation like the Arkonas.
But these people behaving like vultures in the city's dark hour did piss him off, and there was the potential that whatever they were stealing would prove dangerous in the wrong hands, more than a pile of gold coins.
Still, he had appearances to keep, and he couldn't pretend to be a noblewoman's bodyguard if he abandoned her by running off without her leave.
Gavin hadn't expected that permission to come, although perhaps Mordin striding towards the gang was enough to force Vestis to agree - she seemed a little flustered all of a sudden.
"Would you mind *cough* staying back to protect Lady Selancourte, sergeant? We shall deal with this."
Gavin rasped as he drew his rapier and moved forward to join Mordin. He still felt like he could barely stand, but the exertion of battle, as it seemed unlikely these thieves would abandon their prize without one, probably would warm him up a bit. He could use that right now, before the cold seeped in completely.I didn't actually intend to kill EVERYONE. It just sort of happened.

Carla
Perhaps it was due to focusing on keeping watch for ambushes, but Carla needs a second to process the play before her. For the marineŽs benefit, no doubt. She is generally not thrilled to have to play the lapdog to the diva, so the prospect of having to take it out on some looters looked quite promising. Now, she does not have any love for the Arkonas, and she didnŽt really feel any grudges towards most gangs, but, well, if those crates were dangerous sheŽd rather she knows who has them.
Aw, hells. The boys had my back back there, I have theirs while weŽre together. I was never cut out to be an actress, she thinks as she ponders a way to phrase this.
Madam, if I may - it what these scum are handling is dangerous, we need to subdue them immediately. By your leave, she says, then barks a "Eslivar, hunt!" while dashing towards the gang.
Best not to kill before I can get to see who they are, flashes through her head, and she strikes in a way that the chain, rather than the heavy ball on the end, would do most of the hitting. Still painful, but less likely to be immediately lethal.

Re: THEChanger's Curse of the Crimson Throne: Edge of Anarchy
A shock goes through Gavin as he hears Gaedren's name mentioned.
He had just thought that this scum were opportunistic looters, and might have left them alone had the potential threat of dangerous cargo not been mentioned.
Now there was no doubt in Gavin's mind that 1) these men were up to no good and were after something explicitly dangerous to the city & 2) that his first instinct to stop them, regardless of the weakness in his bones, had been the correct one.
That weakness in Gavin's body vanished in a hot flash of adrenaline as he sees the cart start to pull away.
Frustrated that their quarry was getting away with what they were after, and that these disgusting dregs of humanity were standing in their way, Gavin roars loudly in frustration as he breaks into a run, charging the closest thug slowly approaching the group, rapier held out in front of him.
Not fast enough Gavin, never fast enough
That chiding from the self-loathing voice in the back of his head echoing in his ears, Gavin pulls his rapier back as he reaches the thug and lunges across the remaining few feet at the man with another roar of unleashed fury, wildly thrusting his rapier ahead of him at the man's face.

I didn't actually intend to kill EVERYONE. It just sort of happened.

Re: THEChanger's Curse of the Crimson Throne: Edge of Anarchy
Ardino started flipping halfway through his charge, finally ending with an axe kick that narrowly missed the closest thug.

Re: THEChanger's Curse of the Crimson Throne: Edge of Anarchy
As the thugs take up arms and Gaedran's name is mentioned, Mordin's lips curl into a grim smile beneath his visor. Thank you for making matters much less complicated.
As the carriage speeds away, it turns into a snarl of frustration. Realizing that he has no way of chasing down a horsedrawn wagon, he turns his attention towards the remaining men and hopes the others take better notice of the direction it seems to be heading.
He sees Ardino and Gavin charging forward, but also notices the thugs pulling out suspicious-looking flasks in the back. Remembering the talk of explosives, he whispers "Oh no, you don't" under his breath.
Momentarily forgetting about his cover, his legs start to glow with a familiar golden light once again, and in a blur he speeds past the first two enemies and engages one of the flask-bearing men lurking in the back.
Spoiler: OOCMordin spends a point of Mental Focus to activate Sudden Speed (swift action), giving him 40 ft. movement and bringing the thugs in the back well within charge range.
He provokes from Thug 2 during his charge (his AC is 18 because of -2).
Charge attack against Thug 4: (1d20+7)[20]
Damage if I hit: (2d6+7)[19]

Re: THEChanger's Curse of the Crimson Throne: Edge of Anarchy
Carla
Lamm? Is there nothing tonight that this tick does not have his tentacles in?Carla wondered, ignoring the bad metaphor. That did, however, make her task far simpler. Random gangs she did not get into fights with, unless she had a good reason. With these unfortunates, she had all the reason sheŽd ever need.
"Mother of vengeance, give me your favor, and take the pain I spread as tribute," she whispered, tensing herself, before rushing forward in a mad dash after Mordin, determined not to give the scum at the back time to prepare something with the boxes that had fallen from the cart. And if I can get to the cart... well, the pact with the Hound might be a lot more useful than I expected..
The night obscures the slight shifting of her features, but the wide grin, wicked laughter and bounding gait make her appear as something else in the shadows.

Re: THEChanger's Curse of the Crimson Throne: Edge of Anarchy
Lady Selancourte
Her! Vestis' eyes widened, then narrowed in vexation. She was with Lamm, with some laughable common rule riot. She couldn't say she was surprised.
Lady Selancourte's voice cut through the night, like the cracking of a whip.
"दास! चलते वक्त, आप मूर्खतापूर्ण बात!"
When she had raised her hands, preparing to cast a spell, the wagon had already turned around the corner. She briefly considered running through the alleyway to the right, hoping to catch up to her, but it would have been a gamble, and a silly and dangerous one at that. She wasn't sure if the fact that she worked for Lamm improved or lowered the odds that Acele was with her. She obviously could disguise herself well through magical means, but why pretend to be someone else while buying Acele?
She again started whispering infernal sorceries under her breath, directed at the thug Sir Mordin was just going to charge. "सावधान, सैनिक!"
If the glass flasks contained the same substance as Giggles had consumed, they were in trouble, so she had to stop them from drinking.
Vestis could only pray Lamm hadn't managed to provide that liquid to many of his thugs.
Spoiler: ActionsCasting Daze on thug 4. Too bad the wagon got away. -.-Last edited by aberratio ictus; 2017-05-19 at 02:17 PM.

Re: THEChanger's Curse of the Crimson Throne: Edge of Anarchy
Dirkust held his dagger out, defensively. He approached cautiously, not committing to a forward charge like his companions.
