Re: [5e] Curse of Strahd - UA playtest IC
"I believe this loathsome once-man to be a vampire! They have influence over bats, rats, and wolves and they can have enchanting powers, be wary!" Beiro declares as he charges Strahd and attacks.
Spoiler
Move from F3 to H8, making sure to keep clear of Zombie 2 since unlike the rest it can actually use its reaction.
If possible as part of my move/action I'd like Beiro to punt the detached zombie arm into the distance as he passes by.
Bonus action to activate Fighting Spirit: advantage on all attack rolls and resistance to bludgeoning, piercing, and slashing damage until the end of my next turn.
A note about my attacks: "Whenever you have advantage on a melee attack roll you make with the weapon and hit, you can knock the target prone if the lower of the two d20 rolls would also hit the target."

Re: [5e] Curse of Strahd - UA playtest IC
Spoiler: asideThe 18 hit but the 13 didn't so we don't have to worry about the prone thing this time but thank you for reminding me
Beiro solidly lands a well placed blow of his axe to Strahd's neck [5 dmg (factoring resistance)] but the force of the blow reverberates back through Beiro's arms like he just struck a blacksmith's anvil. The blade does not break the vampire's skin and it doesn't appear to even left a bruise. Strahd does not reel or physically react to the blow itself, but he lashes out with his left hand towards Beiro's chest...

Re: [5e] Curse of Strahd - UA playtest IC
Ismark's short sword strikes true [6 dmg] and severs Zombie4's right arm which remains in the square the rest of him retreated from.
Strahd then backs up to the wall himself (J10) then walks right up it 20 feet before turning and casting a fireball centered on Andrei.
Spoiler: Fireball
Everyone must make a DC17 Dex saving throw or take (8d6)[27] damage. Take half (rounded down) on a successful save
The fireball consumes what is left of Zombie 2 and 3 and their parts on the ground, as well as Zombie 4's right arm.

Re: [5e] Curse of Strahd - UA playtest IC
Beiro does land another blow with his axe as Strahd backs away from him doing negligible damage [4 dmg].
Ismark drops to the ground lifeless. Strahd shakes his head, apparently disappointed he killed the young noble before "convincing" him to invite him in to the house.
As the blast of the fireball starts to clear 2 swarms of bats appear flying around either side of the mansion. Strahd directs one to attack Marcia and the other Sandu. The bats swoop down into each of their spaces and flutter about incessantly trying to bite.
Spoiler: DM rollsBats v. Marcia (1d20+4)[22]
Bats v Sandu (1d20+4)[17]
Strahd then addresses the group.
You insolent fools! You are not prepared to face me. Make no mistake, I am the undisputed lord of this land and you will learn respect and humility.
It is not my intent to break my new toys on the very first day however. This will end and I will take my minions and go when all of you take a knee and kneel before me.

Re: [5e] Curse of Strahd - UA playtest IC
Zap! lets out a blood curdling screech when the fire ball washes over her, then dives almost headfirst towards the ground, where she stays hands clamped tightly over her head. She visibly shakes with fear and gibbers unintelligibly where she is.

Re: [5e] Curse of Strahd - UA playtest IC
Marcia dodges and weaves around the bats as Andrei rushes to her rescue. Her arms are covered in lacerations from the bites and she's covered in burns from the vampire's spell. Even wounded as she is, she looks at the vampire through his conjured swarm and states, "I may not have been able to observe you long, monster, but I know exactly what you are.
You're a bully, preying on those weaker than you because you can. I will never bow to you, or anyone like you. Not even if it means my life.
Spoiler: Actions
Marcia's taking the dodge action. Because she's at 1 HP and in melee.

Re: [5e] Curse of Strahd - UA playtest IC
Sandu walks forward out of the bat swarm and kneels beside Beiro. He casts the spell Spare the Dying to stabilize Beiro's condition, placing his hand on the firbolg's chest.
He then remains still staring at the ground on his knees, knowing full well the only hope for the party's survival is to submit to the cruel will of Strahd, to survive to fight another day.
The beast will pay for his Hubris, this land will again know the peace of death.
Strahd himself smiles looking down on the scene. He raises his right hand and several bolts of magical energy fly from it and unerringly strike Marcia, knocking her unconscious.
The two bat swarms start circling around Andrei, and the Zombie's against the wall of the mansion release a low wail.
What will it be warlock? Shall I have your pride or your life?

Re: [5e] Curse of Strahd - UA playtest IC
Strahd smiles wickedly as he strolls down the front on the mansion back to ground level. He stops by the front steps looking back at the door.
Alas my beloved our reunion will have to wait yet a short time still.
Then turning back to the party (3 kneeling and 2 lying unconscious).
I hope you have learned your lesson tonight. You are but children meddling with forces you can not yet comprehend. Perhaps someday one of you will become powerful enough to take my place as lord of this land, but that day is yet a long long way off.
Until we meet again...
with that he holds out his hands and a cloud of fog begins to form around him, the zombies walk towards him and then they are all shrouded in fog, then the whole party is obscured. A moment later an unnaturally strong breeze blows the fog away and Strahd, the Zombies, and Ismark's corpse are gone.
Behind you out in the street you hear the cackling laughter of an old woman as she pushes a cart laden with what appear to be fine pastries down the lane away from you. You are certain she is mocking your humiliation.
From inside the mansion you hear the sobbing crying of a young woman.
[technically Marcia should make a death saving throw here, but I believe it to be moot as I doubt it will take Sandu two more turns to stabilize her now that the encounter is over]Last edited by tieren; 2017-05-03 at 09:15 AM.
