Re: Further Adventures in New Ganthar (IC)
Lieutenant Ilyen remains quiet, trying not to draw attention to herself as the tension builds between you. She does, however, quietly place herself between Yara and the exit, her actions signalling more clearly than words her expectations of the psion.

Re: Further Adventures in New Ganthar (IC)
Theo was certainly becoming more of a hindrance than a help. She notices the lieutenant move to block the door, did the woman expect her to try and escape? Seeing that made Yara consider escaping, should she use her six minutes of demon time to rip them all to shreds and flee?
No, that would ruin her plans. This she would have to talk her way out.
"I'm afraid that what you are asking is more difficult than you may think. The demon is bound to me quite tightly, apparently purposely grafted to my soul, and through what I found out at the temple of Maya permanently exorcising it will be hard. At the time frame we should be moving at to stop the vampires, taking the time to understand and exorcise the demon will take to long and may prevent me taking part, according to Sister Madeline it will in fact permanently damage my soul to remove.
There isn't even much of a reason to fully exorcise it yet. I can suppress it at the Temple of Maya before the raid. There is no reason to keep the plans from me at this point in time. The demon isn't working with the vampires and can't contact them anyway. The only danger is from it appearing during the fight in which case it barely matters whether it knows our plan or not."

Re: Further Adventures in New Ganthar (IC)
There is every reason to exorcise the demon as soon as we can, but you are right, we should not sideline you before we oppose the vampires. And you can be assured that the temples of Law will be on our side for the affair. But it is still being planned, and I dare not say more at this time.
But permanent damage or no, not getting rid of your demon would run afowl of Charis, who holds your life in her hands. I counsel you to think wisely on that end. Anyway, onto the morgue. I am intrigued to find out what you seek there.Spoiler

Re: Further Adventures in New Ganthar (IC)
Ilyen looks slightly surprised when Theo concedes the point - however temporarily - but, with the briefest of questioning glances towards him, she stands aside.
"Finding the bodies of the slain cultists may not be easy," she warns. "You are lucky they were killed in the market square, rather than the more lawless parts of the city, so there is at least a chance.
"From what I have seen in the past, the guards will have taken the corpses to hallowed ground as quickly as circumstances allow. No one wants to take unnecessary risks with a dead body, particularly those of evil men violently slain. For preference this would be at the Temple of Granig, since they would normally deal with the last rites for the dead, but it might be a different Temple depending on the circumstances - or, in emergencies or where there is an ongoing investigation, the headquarters of the guard has an oft-consecrated building on site. It's little more than a shed, truth be told, but it has a stout door, locked and usually guarded, and the consecration is renewed with painstaking regularity whenever there are bodies present."
She marks the location of the guards' headquarters on your map - the Temple of Granig you know already.
"Relath and Charis go with you, Theo... and with you too, Yara." Her tone leaves it ambiguous whether she is praying for Their protection over Yara, or for Their vigilance against her.
Spoiler: YaraThe demon whispers in your ear again: "Self-righteous hag. Sanctimonious and suspicious. Are these the people you want to impress? The lackeys of that butcher, Charis? Perhaps we need a way to trick them into thinking I've gone. Which means we need this Mark of Justice removed."

Re: Further Adventures in New Ganthar (IC)
"And shouldn't I be involved in the planning? After all I got the Vanguard's aid. I spent today researching the weaknesses of vampires and notes on the cult of Maltur along with several other problems involved with the city. I risked an important part of myself to place my psicrystal on Calartes and thus gave us a way to track it. If we are to find the lair, it will be through my risk. With how much work I am putting into this, don't I at least deserve some input? How am I to prove myself if I am just the psionic club you use to strike your foes? Any brute can do that. I am a priestess of Feronax and I demand to be treated more then just a potential risk you keep around to hurl at your enemies!"
After raising her voice at that last sentence, she points to the map. With a finger on the guards headquarters, she speaks with a largely emotionless voice.
"Oh, and we should go there. If a hidden cult doesn't call for ongoing investigations then this place is more messed up than I could possibly hope to fix."
Yara concentrates to mentally communicate with the demon. The woman is unimportant and too low to bother ourselves with. However Theo is proving to restrictive and I am unlikely to survive going back to Charis's form of justice. Demon, I have thought of a way to get out of Theo's power. I will tell you it later. You may end up getting more than six minutes of my time.

Re: Further Adventures in New Ganthar (IC)
Yara's frustration is quite apparent, but something seemed off to Theo. Her demands exceded mere respect, and in fact flaunted the fact that she was effectively paroled to Theo by his Goddess and the law. Her shouting certainly didnt help her case. She was resisting the removal of her demon, could this be that very demon acting out of self preservation? And she seemed awfully concerned about which temples were dedicated to the cause, was this part of the demon's ulterior motive by influencing Yara?
Theo keeps his tone low so that few can hear him. Now was not the time for such bickering. You are to prove yourself through your deeds. The risk you put yourself through is showing that you desire to atone for attacking the lawful head of the state. This was your choice, you voluntarily subjected yourself to the judgment of Charis, and she only stayed the execution because I asked for it. By all objective reasoning, you owe your life to me. If you would like it otherwise, then by all means you can turn yourself over to the courts and ask them for a new trial. They might humor you with official proceedings.
And I appreciate what risk you have undertaken, but we already know the location of the vampire's lair. And every priest with the power to turn or destroy the undead granted to them learns of the weaknesses of vampires. But the Cult of Maltur are dedicated to the cause of demons, and you are sharing your soul with one. Do you honestly think you would be trusted with top secret information at this time? The only people who are in on the plans of opposing these evil threats dont just represent a group, they have soldiers and resources tied to the cause. What, besides yourself, is Feronax going to provide to defeating the vampires, or the Cult of Maltur?
But the coalition is formed under the authority of the Chancellors, who's predecessor you had attacked in the open. If you think you should be permitted to top secret information on domestic security plans, you can ask them. And if you wish to be treated as more than a serious risk to all those around you, then you should remove that risk and rid yourself of the demon, regardless of what damage it might cause you. Such a selfless act would probably do well for earning your life back.
SpoilerYeah Theo is definitely using Sense Motive on Yara. (1d20+8)[23]
Also, does my hammer glow in response to Yara communicating with her demon? And does that add to my sense motive roll?
Also making a diplomacy roll, to help convince yara to rid herself of demonic influence: (1d20+7)[9]

Re: Further Adventures in New Ganthar (IC)
At first she thought she was just going to get another lecture from Theo, but paled at hearing they had found the lair. She had also noticed the hammer lighting up, she would need to talk to the demon later to make sure it didn't answer her in his presence.
"How can you possibly know where the lair is?" she asks a bit shakily. She had become less useful here and thus less influential.
As she thought it over she calmed down a bit.
"Well how trustworthy is your source? You don't want to launch a raid only to find out it was the wrong place. My crystal is still needed for confirmation. And while you may wrongly think that information on the cult of Maltur should be kept from my demon has at least some reasoning to it, there is no reason to believe it will try to aid the vampires.
The demon is my burden and as for exorcising it, it's certainly easy for you to suggest it. It's not your soul they need to damage to get it out. Why should I make any move to get it out before I can learn how that will affect me.
And possessed or not, I can still offer more. Don't you think someone who can literally look around the vampires coffin room right now has a place in the discussion?"Last edited by Timble; 2017-03-22 at 06:05 PM.

Ilyen is frowning, her eyes on the hammer. "Does that normally happen, Theo?" she asks, pointing to the weapon. "It's stopped now, but a moment ago..."
She shrugs, smiling apologetically. "Sorry, it's probably nothing. Water flows downhill, politicians lie, and magic weapons glow."

Re: Further Adventures in New Ganthar (IC)
My source is beyond reproach, Theo says, not naming his Goddess though his heart swelled with pride, as if the honors she bestowed upon him had only happened this morning. Though, Theo hated to admit to himself, that Charis had only confirmed the information given over by the temptress Nathalia. But she had a point to the fact that she could see inside the hideout. Or is that some other lie? Theo thought. He did not know a thing about psionic power, and he had not met someone inside his temple that would be able to enlighten him further.
Theo was going to make a point about how her life was in the balance, damage to her soul or no, but then Ilyen interjected about his hammer. Theo looked down, noticing no light or heat emanating from it, but such a statement was strange nonetheless. It clued him in, however, as it only lit up in the past in the face of demonic influence or the undead. With that revelation, the argument was over for Theo. He would not bandy words with the demon inside Yara. He eyed the giantess with suspicion, stating flatly with a tone that did not invite argument, Enough of this for now. You said you had business examining the dead, let us get on before the night is through.Spoiler

Re: Further Adventures in New Ganthar (IC)
Theo and Yara journey through the city, heading for the guard headquarters marked on your map. The tension between you, the sense of mistrust on the one side, and grievance on the other, is enough to keep conversation to a minimum; it surrounds you like the muggy air of a hot day, uncomfortable and hard to ignore.
The guards have their base in the merchant district, perhaps an indication of where most of their efforts are directed. The building is a squat, functional edifice, three rectangular structures radiating out from a central point, surrounded by a roughly circular, seven-foot dry stone wall.
The guard on duty at the gate greets you coolly. A short, balding man in his late thirties, with a thick grey beard at odds with his sparse pate, he has blunt, wide features, which in repose look grim and slightly dismayed. He wears simple leather armour and carries a spear, with a short sword at his belt, and a tabard with the emblem of the guard: standard uniform, from what you have seen.
His eyes take in the weapons you carry, before settling on the Soaring Eagle insignia on Theo's chest. You can almost hear him categorise the Knight: ally.
He looks Yara over, from the unusual sickle to the paraphernalia of a priestess, though to no god he is likely to recognise. He raises an eyebrow at her sheer size, as well. If you had to guess at his assessment of her, it would be, potential threat, probably dangerous, proceed with caution.
"Have you some business with the guard?" he asks briskly.

Re: Further Adventures in New Ganthar (IC)
Theo looked to Yara, awaiting her to explain her reasoning for their presence. All the while, he remained skeptical. The demon had obviously involved itself somehow in the Knight's new base, and there is no telling what it's motivations are. That base needs a name... Theo thought, allowing himself a moment to let his mind wander a bit. But only a brief moment; he tucked that thought away for when he would have time to think up recruitment strategies, and refocused on observing how the demon might be influencing this poor soul.

"Yes sir, we do have business with the guard," Yara says, trying to sound nice but still frustrated. "I am Yara and this is Sir Theo of the Knights of the Soaring Eagle and temple of Charis. Days ago we intervened in an attack by the cult of Maltur and stopped them and their vrock."
"Since then we have been investigating the cult along with other issues. One thing I found in my research is that the cultists should have a tattoo on their left arm. If the bodies from that day are in you're morgue, it will be of great help to the case if we can have permission to examine them."

Re: Further Adventures in New Ganthar (IC)
The guard looks at Yara more respectfully.
"That was you, was it? Nasty business. By all reports, you saved a lot of lives there."
He leads you to the main building, where he exchanges words briefly with another guard, who goes to take his place at the gate.
That done, he leads you through the grounds to a small building - as it was described to you, more a shed than a permanent structure. Even so, you feel a palpable sense of calm as you enter - although Yara can distantly sense the unease of her demon as you step onto consecrated ground.
Another delay, as your escort speaks with a colleague guarding the door. He checks a sheet of parchment by the entrance - a schedule, showing the time when the consecration needs renewing, a good hour from now - and, satisfied, shows you inside.
"We have two of the bodies here," he explains, showing you to the slabs. The stench is foul indeed; seemingly, while the authorities see the value in a consecration, they have not paid out for a gentle repose.
Moving to the two bodies, he turns over the arms to show you matching tattoos: the heads of a chimera, wreathed in flame. One tattoo is faded with age, the other comparatively recent, but the likeness is remarkable - so much so that they may well have been by the same hand.

Re: Further Adventures in New Ganthar (IC)
The respect from the guard ended the frustration she had with Theo. It had been... nice? Some recognition for something she wasn't forced to take part in. Maybe she could still gain respect and power without having to resort to the desperate, chaotic measures she had been considering to separate herself from Theo. It wasn't the time to think about such things.
"Well I couldn't allow such rabble to risk the city," she says quietly with the frustration she had gone.
The smell of the place was terrible but it made Yara think of improvements. Maybe one day she could shape how the city worked. The guard would be more efficient if they had low level mages in their employ, they would be able to at least be able to preserve their evidence better. So many other jobs could be improved if... also not the time. She needed to focus on the job and read about how common it was to develop magical abilities in this part of the world later.
The tatto was where it should be and how it should look. She looks closer to see if it differed in any way from the one the demon showed her, perhaps showing slight differences between cults caused by distance and time.
"Do they have any other markings or unusual scars?" she asks when she is satisfied with how the tattoo looks. "If they haven't been checked, would I be able to look over their bodies? I'm just looking for any way they alter their bodies, it may make others more easy to recognise."
Spoiler: OOC
For search checks for looking for anything unusual on the bodies Yara will take 20 for a total of 26 on each one.

Re: Further Adventures in New Ganthar (IC)
The guard shrugs at that. "Aside from the tattoo, we haven't seen anything like that," he replies. "They've certainly got scars - I'd guess they spend a lot of their time fighting with blades, from the looks of it. Still, by all means have a look."
Yara examines the corpses carefully, ignoring the foul smell. Both men have the calluses and musculature of those used to hard labour. Their clothing is poor quality, coarse material; their bodies show signs of malnutrition and ill health, with one having the marks of an untreated venereal disease.
As the guard had pointed out, both men have scars all over their bodies, apparently from frequent knife- and sword-fighting. The man with the older tattoo has more scars, and many have healed almost completely; the man whose tattoo is fresh has relatively few scars, and they are all recent, perhaps no more than a month or two old.

Re: Further Adventures in New Ganthar (IC)
“Well, we now know more on how to locate them. This man is a new cult member and presumably was either recruited or initiated within the last few months. So they may still be recruiting and have been doing so recently. They will obviously need new members. They are situated in a place of poverty, they can’t feed all or perhaps any of their men well. Wherever they hide, they need a sound-proofed place to fight in without risk of attracting attention, perhaps a basement?”
Yara steps away from the bodies to think.
“Well… With the potions they used, they would need a cult member able to produce it. They wouldn’t be able to buy such potions or even afford them if they were on the market. If they don’t get supplied the potions from an unknown supplier, they would need to buy the resources. Perhaps the cost of the ingredients keep them poor if they are few in number or if they are many then they may be more focused on the production of the potions and sacrifice their food money to produce a lot. So basically, we either wiped out a large chunk of their potion reserves or they have a lot more in reserve. “
“They are potentially aided by the two known Malturite factions, the temple and mercenaries. The temple may supply potions and such while the mercenaries may provide a place to train. That is if any of those groups are secretly aiding the cultists. In the event that the cult launches a large-scale attack it may mean that it has the aid of trained soldiers and clerics.”
Yara keeps thinking for a few seconds before snapping back to reality.
“Oh, it may be best to ignore what I just said. They’re just a few ideas I am using to connect known information but will probably need to investigate more before I can come up with anything accurate. Thank you for letting us see the bodies. I’ve done what I planned here. Do you know where the other bodies went?”
Once she receives the answer she thanks the guard and asks if there is anywhere to wash her hands. On the way she takes the time to contact her psicrystal. With the sun down, she would need to know what was going on with the vampires.

"Well all I really know from what I have just said is just about the existence of the temple of Maltur at the city docks and the Crimson Fist mercenaries. I have been researching the topic and a few others all day and all I have been able to find is that they have those two public faces and that Malturs priests dress in red, his warriors in red gauntlets and his secret cultists with the tattoo. The rest of what I said is just thinking aloud based on the condition of the bodies and can't be trusted to be correct. Whether the other two Maltur factions are connected to the cult, I don't know and what I said on them was just based on the possibility that they are connected."

Re: Further Adventures in New Ganthar (IC)
While Yara is shown to a hand pump outside, where she can wash away the worst of the contamination from handling the corpses, she focuses on the psicrystal.
The crystal reports activity in the basement. Calartes has arisen, along with seven other vampires. So far as you can determine, they said nothing to one another; then each in turn assumes its gaseous form and exits through the grate.
The crystal's awareness vanishes briefly, and when it returns, Calartes is in a marble-lined building. It reports a brief exchange with another vampire:
Go. Feed. Come back when you are whole.

Theo listens intently, not understanding the source of Yara's psionic power but intent on becoming more aware of how she interacts with that power. Are you sure it is Calartes who will feed? Is it only him? Regardless, this seems more urgent than what else we aimed to do next. Come with me, I want you to state this to Niall.
If she consents, Theo guides Yara to the Temple. Concerned that he has not prayed for new spells this evening, yet he pushed those concerns to the back of his mind. Prepared or no, the vampires must be stopped. He thinks to himself.Spoiler

Upon your return to the Temple of Charis, you find the evening service in progress, the building quietly reverberating to the sound of hymns. There are few clerics around, and instead of the boy Pel who normally seems to be manning the door, there is an equally young girl in acolyte's robes, looking nervously at you.
"Hi," she greets you, managing a smile. She seems not to recognise Theo on sight, or Yara - although that is perhaps less surprising. "Everyone's busy right now. Can I help?"

As she is being taken back to the temple, she keeps contacting the crystal to see whether or not it can get a clear view of the building and tell her when Calartes becomes gas and if he returns to solid form before they reach the temple.
When they reach the temple she waits for Theo to talk his way into wherever he was taking her. This was his place and she didn't know exactly what to do. Then again, she would be staying here, she should at least learn a bit tomorrow.

The acolyte looks concerned. "The Lord Commander is out, Sir. I don't know when he's due back."
At that moment, Ember appears. Signalling to you, she leads you away from the relieved acolyte and through the temple to a vacant room - which you suddenly recognise as Niall's office.
Surveying the nearly organised desk, the shelves of paperwork and religious tomes, Ember frowns briefly, then turns her attention back to you.
"Niall has taken two thirds of the Templars and left," she reports succinctly. "He didn't say where they were going, and the Templars left behind know nothing of this. It looks like Asoryala has gone with him.
"Everyone else is carrying on as normal - they say there's nothing unusual about the Lord Commander staging a military exercise without broadcasting it to the world. But even if that is what he's doing, I don't like it - or the timing."
Yara meanwhile receives a steady stream of information from the psicrystal. Calartes has left the vampires' lair, and is now prowling through the city. He seems to be heading into the poor quarter, perhaps looking for victims who will be less readily missed.
Your psicrystal spots a landmark it recognises: the school Calartes was building when Yara first saw him.

"well if they are out," Yara says to Theo, "they are either going after the cult or after the vampires, or some foe I don't know of. Attacking the vampires at night is stupid so I presume not that. Do you have any idea what they could be doing?"
Calartes school got Yara thinking. Causing Calartes death by accident probably removed it's funding. She wanted a place outside of what her allies could provide her. Perhaps if she could find the funding...
But thinking about that was very unimportant.
"Theo, do you still want to go after Calartes? Can you command the soldiers without Niall?"

I have no conclusive evidence, but I would place my money on the Malturites. Theo said briskly. His mind raced, he saw the swiftly erased plans Niall had been briefing his soldiers on, but had no idea as to the contents. And Nathalia gave Theo the location of the vampire den, which could only mean that she intended Theo to go after them and give the higher prize to Niall. But.. Theo thought on... Why would Niall act this night? I had told him that Charis advised that we did not have the power to destroy both the Malturites and Vampires at the same time, why would he split power to take on either faction? Theo could only conclude that he was attempting to increase popularity with a grand victory, so that he might be High Priest. But even if they go after the vampire's base of action, then reducing Calartes to mist would chase him into the clutches of our allies. Aye, I'll follow you to Calartes. You said he had left, do you know to where?
After getting the description from Yara, he continued. I cannot command soldiers here, but I know someone who can. Ember, Theo says to the woman, go to the Temple of Berun, tell Mother Martha to meet me at the Temple of Relath. Tell her we are going after at least one vampire who is skilled in the arcane arts, and cannot be certain how many are with him, so should bring as much of a force as she thinks appropriate. And then I want you to come back here. This Temple is run by a skeleton crew until Niall comes back, and I need to keep a trusted ally here. Pulling her close so as to whisper, in case other Charis priests were near, And use this time to garner what support against Niall for the new High Priest. Anyone you think that can win.
He turns back to the giantess. Come, Yara, we are off to see Arbiter Lothrain. We have no time to spare.Spoiler
In the past, I played Sir Theo Roost.
I am soon to begin playing his heir, Dora the Destroya

Re: Further Adventures in New Ganthar (IC)
Wasting no time, Ember sets off to do as you have asked.
Within twenty minutes, you are at the Temple of Relath, seated in the office of Arbiter Lothrain. The interior of this temple is familiar to Yara, but Theo has not visited before; the murals showing battles between the forces of good and evil, statues of heroic figures, and Gothic architecture are at once markedly different to Charis's temple, but also speak to an aspect of faith which Theo shares with them.
A man in the uniform of a Lifewarden is already there, a slender man in his thirties with shoulder-length blond hair and sharp, narrow features. He is eyeing the decor with profound unease, and as he turns his head you recognise him as the leader of last night's team of Lifewardens.
Spotting you, the cleric smiles wanly.
"It seems we are to fight side by side again, Sir Theo. Hopefully with better results than last night. I don't think we've been formally introduced - I'm Eldan."
Lothrain coughs pointedly. "Yes, very nice I'm sure. I understand one or more dangerous vampires are on the loose, and innocents may be in danger. This is hardly a time for polite platitudes."
Turning to Theo, Lothrain adds briskly, "Where is the vampire, and how much of a threat is he?"
