    Default Low Fantasy Gaming RPG

Trying to keep posts relating to Low Fantasy Gaming rpg (d20 variant, old/new mechanics mix, focus on rules lite, gritty, low magic) in one spot, so I've started this thread.

To kick off, here's links to:

    The free PDF: https://lowfantasygaming.com/freepdf/

    Some free mini adventures: https://www.patreon.com/user?u=645444

    Monk class: https://lowfantasygaming.com/2017/01/13/the-monk/

Renamed Spells for the Midlands setting: https://lowfantasygaming.com/2017/02...-the-midlands/

Currently there is a Free Shipping code via Lulu - FREEMAIL17 expires March 21, with which you could get the LFG softcover for about USD $7. Note I'm in Sydney, so this code may not work for a few hours yet in northern hemisphere countries.

And this is probably the wrong forum to put this in...

If you see LFG as a D20 system then this should be in the D20 sub-forum.
If you see it as more not D20 than it is then it should be in the other RPGs sub-forum (which I think is usually where I see it mentioned).

I would suggest working out which forum this should be in and PMing a moderator to ask them to move it there.

As much as OSR stuff tends to get on my nerves, I'm liking a lot of this from reading it. The generalized Exploits look like a lot of fun, the luck points mechanic seems pretty usable, and while it's still a bit too D&D for my taste I appreciate Clerics getting kicked. There's definitely some stuff here that's going to be stolen borrowed for my own games.
I would really like to see a game made by Obryn, Kurald Galain, and Knaight from these forums.

I'm not joking one bit. I would buy the hell out of that.

I just wanted to say, I like this a lot. Using it for the third 1-on-1 campaign at the moment, one of them sci-fi with magic-users as psy-users and refluffed crossbows as blasters. After adding a handful of technology related skills, it worked surprisingly well. There are just two wishes / suggestions / houserules I have: a scaling bonus to armor class to keep high level warriors from hitting each other every round (I use one-third the Attack Bonus granted by character class, rounded down) and some alternatives to replace Dark & Dangerous Magic Table as a drawback for magic (it's quite specific and not equally suited for every setting I make, plus I like the idea of having different traditions of magic that carry different risks and pay different prices for power in the same setting).

Argh you're right. LFG is kinda it's own thing, although it uses the OGL. It has low magic base, mix of old and modern mechanics, with some new stuff thrown in. Looking at the forum categories I'd call it a d20 variant. If any mods read this, by all means please relocate this thread into the d20 forum.

Glad to hear this. I think LFG kinda bridges the gap between OSR and more modern games/mechanics. If you end up borrowing anything for your game then I've succeeded!

    That sci-fi refluff sounds AWESOME.

And I think your two suggestions are both good ones. The boost to AC could also be accommodated via Unique Abilities for individual PCs, but I understand you're after an across the board tweak. I especially like swapping out the DDM table for say a Wild Elemental Table or Wild Nature Table for a druid like character. Or just more of a "Chaos Magic" table (more standardish "wild magic"), and so on.

I like the map, but it is a bit diffucult to judge distances in the back where the perspective makes the small bar scale unusable.

Is there such a thing as a "recommended party level" for the adventures?

Yes true the map is just for rough distances and relative locations. I was half tempted to remove the scale bar altogether, but some guide is probably better than none (or perhaps I can modify that, make it larger).

There are no recommended levels for the mini adventures. Low Fantasy Gaming rpg uses a formal Party Retreat rule as its "balancing" mechanic (along with improvisational chase rules). For PF, 5e etc it's pretty easy to swap out monsters/traps to suit your system/party level.

It's definitely better to have a map. If I use it, I'll probably sell the sketchy scale bar and the distortion as features and tell the players that the in-game maps they bought are just not accurate enough to provide entirely reliable distances. I took a look at some medieval maps and some of them really were nothing more than a string of the relative location of cities and settlements. And that's without places that are hidden from detection by magic and surveyors that tend to fall prey to owlbears in the line of duty.

That sounds cool. Just FYI I will be releasing the high res crystal clear version for free download (personal use) on the site once the setting book is out (not too far away now, some art pending). Two versions actually: one with the names and one without names, so the GM can use Paint or Gimp 2.8 or whatever to put their own names on/other location icons/whatever they want :)

Well done Psikerlord, I really like the look of this system and I'm hoping my regular group will like it too so I can run something for them.

I am curious as to why it uses a roll-under mechanic for skills but the more modern roll-plus-modifier method for attacks. For a game that's intended to be fast-paced and rules-light, is there something wrong with just using die-plus-modifier for everything as 5E does?

Also, when you use this system do you tend to use a grid for combat or theatre of the mind style? Do you recommend one over the other? I like the idea of theatre of the mind for the sake of gameplay speed and flow, but in a game like D&D with very tactical combat rules I find the grid is necessary. Is LFG different in this respect?

Thanks HHE. Well the intention was to make attributes more relevant, instead of just a number that generates a modifier. Eg making an Int 15 roll under check is very different to a roll under Int 8 check, but if you convert those to modifiers and a DC, it is only a +2 bonus vs a -1 bonus on a d20 roll. Also, I personally like the idea that the player can gauge his chance of success before even rolling (eg if I have a PC with Dex 15, I know he's going to succeed in most Dex checks - subject to modifiers). On the other hand, it is pretty easy to convert to a 5e like DC regime for greater consistency :)

    That makes sense, thanks.

Sorry, I added another question to my post after I posted - in case you want to look back at it 😆
