Re: Weird Food
I've traveled the world and gone far off the beaten path. I've eaten things you people wouldn't believe.
I've eaten attack ships on fire off the shoulder of Orion.Nothing seems weird anymore.

Re: Weird Food
Well seeing as you can substitute the lutfisk with wet cardboard as the taste and consistency would be similar I guess it comes down to the accompanying items on the plate, or that you had so much Akvavit, Absolut Vodka and or Brännvin, that you think you recall having a good time and therefore would like to try it again.

Re: Weird Food
No, my wife was actually quite horrified I would eat an animal as cute as a wallaby.
I have been informed if I eat horse or frog (twoof her favorite animals), there is a chance she will leave me!
...I do want to try snails.
Oh, and earlier this year I ate Balmain Bug: tasted somewhere between crab and prawn.

Re: Weird Food
This confused me for a moment. Another one of those words that mean different things in the UK vs US. Grilling in the UK is more commonly used to mean direct radiated heat from an element overhead - what you call broiling, I think? I think what you call grilling (kinda like frying but with a ridged pan so it's not sitting in fat, isn't it?) we maybe call griddling, but mostly just don't do.

Re: Weird Food
Yes, that is broiling.
Grilling can be done in a ridged pan like you described, but most of the time when that word is used it's referring to cooking food on grates over flames or hot coals. Heat radiates from underneath the food, in other words.

Re: Weird Food
So, this is all sorta vanilla, but I guess some people consider it unusual? Sometimes my family will get together to eat mussels, and we'll just get a big bag of them. There are always a bunch of tiny dead crabs inside. Never considered it unusual until other people seemed surprised by it.
Also! Since someone mentioned American cheese, I was at this Korean restaurant yesterday, and one of their bowls literally had a slice of American cheese just sitting in the soup and noodles. Just... Why?

Re: Weird Food
Yeah, here in Australia what's called broiling in the USA is known as grilling.
It's a bit confusing, because I conflated the words boiling and broiling - I assumed broiling included liquid.

Re: Weird Food
I realize this probably isn't that weird for some people, but it was super weird for an American like me: mocotó in Brazil. It's cow hoof. I remember thinking it had a weird texture the first time I had it but still liking it because of the flavor. I think that was just self-denial, though, because the next time I had it I hated everything about it. Definitely the weirdest food I personally ate while living in Brazil.

Re: Weird Food
Possibly it's budae jjigae, literally "army stew."
It's the product of Korean War era improvisation using foods (mostly canned, processed ) brought in by the US Army--Spam, hot dogs, Kraft cheese, baked beans, for example--with Korean foodstuffs typically used for stews (jjigae)...kimchi, ramyun noodles, gochujang, tofu.
It's also drunk/hangover food, which explains everything even better than the historical context and cuisine fusion.

Where I'm from, we eat our fries with apple sauce. Especially kids love fries with applesauce.
When I went to the US I was pretty confused when I got ketchup with my fries, it's not super popular overhere. :O

Re: Weird Food
There's a few places at the south jersey shore that serve fries with straight vinegar (as opposed to ketchup, which is of course a mix of vinegar, tomato, and spices. Though you can generally get ketchup at those places too.)

Re: Weird Food
Is your vinegar the same as our vinegar, though? Because I find this combo exceedingly odd.
You could maybe get away with it by using glazed vinegar, or just balsamic vinegar, but the first is strictly Italian, I think, and the second is also expensive as hell.
So unless you have some kind of lighter vinegar... ew?

Re: Weird Food
No, regular vinegar would be wine vinegar, at least here. And if there is something I wouldn't call vinegar is bland, it's one of, if not the, stronger condiments you can put on anything, which is why it's mostly used as a preserving agent instead.
There are exceptions in various recipes and with special kinds of vinegar, like balsamic vinegar, which is sweeter and less of a punch in the gut.
But normal vinegar around here is eye-watering, throat burning, tongue scraping, "oh God why did I used so much of this?!" material.

Re: Weird Food
I'm guessing you don't have rice vinegar over there either in large quantities, which over here is another contender for 'vinegar'. (It keeps us on our toes when grocery shopping)
Do Italians just not have vinaigrette, or do you just use smaller amounts of vinegar for that? For all of your completely and utterly honest needs. Zaydos made, Tiefling approved.
