(IC) Starbuck's Core-ish Sunless Citadel
You find yourselves in Oakhurst, a fortnight before Midsummer, it is a village of some 900 folk, including outlying farms. The people here are mostly human, though have a sizable halfling population, other races are scattered among them. There is little here of note, an Inn (the Ol' Boar) for travelers to rest in, a general store, a blacksmith, a shrine to Pelor, the Village Hall and a small sheriff's office. Beyond that, merely houses and farms.
The landscape outside is rolling hills, broken by copses of trees. The idyllic countryside marred only by a scarred region, known as the ashen a few miles out to the west, and a deep ravine cutting across the land to the south. The New Road through town heads from a westerly direction (slightly north to avoid the Ashen Plain) to a east, while the 'Old' road, heads down to towards the ravine, and skirts the edge along it, though this road has fallen to disuse.
Oakhurst, Ol' Boar Inn:
The air is dusty, clean but with a hint of beer and meat. It's noon, the lunch rush having been slow today, ending all too soon. The barkeep, a thin elf male, cleans the glasses behind the counter. The head of a three tusked Boar is mounted on the wall above him. In one corner of the bar, a small group of gnomes are lazily playing some sort of card game, their flesh covered in the type of clothes you'd expect from the seedier type of bar denizen. Contrasting them on the other side of the bar are two Halfling guardswomen. Both are off duty, one playing darts by herself while the other nurses a cool, stiff glass of water. Finally, in the back of the tavern is a human gambler, playing at games of chance with two 1/2 orc men. Judging from their laughing and the current "in tact" status of the tavern, they seem to be winning quite well.
On one wall is a board with papers attached with all sorts of problems and notes of interest written.
Spoiler
1. The general store owner, Kerolywn Hucrele, has lost her two children. They went adventuring a past month ago. She is willing to meet at local tavern to discuss terms for their rescue.
2. A traveling noble Mr. Poppers wishes to retrieve a family heirloom interred with a long-dead ancestor in Hightower tor. Willing to offer up to 50 gp for return.
3. Mayor wishes inquiry into seed disappearances and cow mutilations.

Re: (IC) Starbuck's Core-ish Sunless Citadel
Currently, Faustus is at the bar, waiting to meet with Kerolwyn Hucrele regarding her lost children, which he heard about through a friend of family business associate. Faustus is a short human male with black close-cropped hair and a beak-like nose, unremarkably dressed save for the chain shirt that he wears. Faustus’ right hand is his most notable feature; the alchemical symbol for Mercury is tattooed on the back and it constantly twitches as he rests it on the basket hilt of his saber.

Re: (IC) Starbuck's Core-ish Sunless Citadel
I came to oakhurst to restock on supplies. I, Samuel Garrison came into the tavern to rent a room when I learned about the woman who lost her children through the help wanted which causes me to think about The general store owner, Kerolywn Hucrele, had lost her two children. As they went adventuring a past month ago. I learned about the fact she is going to meet at the local tavern to discuss terms for their rescue. So now I am in the tavern talking to people and seeing if anyone else was willing to help rescue her. I wanted to because the idea of a loving mother losing her children is a horrible thought when some families treat their children horribly and others should have a reliable means to take them away from them.

Orindun Brightaxe is here becuase its on the way to his dwarven homelands, he's going back there after he helped clear out a kobold den with some villagers a few days back. However, he is greatly distressed by the idea of a child being seperated from its mother, so he is defenitely waiting to see what others say about that

Re: (IC) Starbuck's Core-ish Sunless Citadel
The door to the inn cracks open slightly and the muzzle of a dog pokes in. The bulky mastiff throws itself against the door and lumbers in, tongue lolling and nose in full sniffing mode. Riding on its back is a youngish looking gnome dressed in simple leather armor and some blue pants and a tunic who's hues don't quite match. The gnome leans forward and whispers something in the dog's ear who then saunters over towards the bar and allows the gnome to clamber up onto a stool. With perhaps a tad more enthusiasm than needed for such a slow part of the day, the lad waves down the elf bartender with a warm smile. When he speaks, his tone and tempo are calmer than one might expect from such a young gnome.
"Good day, Sir! My pup and I just arrived in your nice little town, and boy are we hungry. I'll have two orders of whatever delicious meat dish you're offering, though you don't need to go through the trouble of cooking the second order if it isn't prepared already. Spud's as friendly with food as I try to be with folk." The young gnome smiles politely again and glances around the bar. Noticing a lack of other dogs, a look of concern crosses his face. "Begging your pardon if I shouldn't have brought him in. He can eat outside if you don't allow animals, but I promise he's as well behaved as they come."Spoiler

Hearing the conversation, Orindun worridley begins speaking.
"I've heard of a mother losing her children. Is that what you are talking about? If that's the case, then by my beard I want to help get them back! Moradin wishes for dwarves to to return to their clans after being gone like I have, but he defenitely wants children to be safe, dwarf or not."

Re: (IC) Starbuck's Core-ish Sunless Citadel
Rescuing her grown children; from what I understand the Hucrele siblings were adventurers who went missing about a month ago.
If I had to guess it's probably related to whatever's been mutilating the local cattle. As for my abilities, I happen to be a fencer, one who's studied a rather singular school of swordsmanship. Faustus draws a dagger from a sheath underneath his cloak and begins twirling it in his hand. As he does so, motes of silver fire start to play along the blade. A very singular school. If brute force isn't working, that just means you're not using enough of it.

A figure that you are pretty sure is a gnome perks up. He waffles over from the card game. He looks well groomed, but doesn't smell like it.
He thinks: Lost children, stolen stock... Nasty business. If I am seen helping, maybe the mayor will forget that "assault with a non-deadly spell" charge...
Aloud, he interrupts- If I may, I am a mage, and I would be interested in helping you end these problems plaguining the town. My real name is not for you, no offense, but I answer to Centipete.Slatescale, Pterran cultist rogue/elemental Scion //lurk

And what about you, Mr. Garrison? The...gnome? and I have stated what our abilities are, and I'm fairly certain the dwarf is a warrior of some kind, but we've yet to hear how you would be able to contribute.

Re: (IC) Starbuck's Core-ish Sunless Citadel
The tavern door opens, in walks a man in fine clothes. He sees your group gathering and comes toward you, "I am Darlig Poppers, if I am right, maybe one of you read my job note on the board. I hope you lot would be willing to help me. My uncle has been assumed dead with a family heirloom, he was a bit of an archeologist. So he would be in some crypt or tomb. It is a silver amulet with my crest, "he shows his crest, " if you come across it, please return it, I have about 50 gp for you all to share if you do so. It is very important to our family, I have no clue where he would go so if you can't find it, don't worry too much." He starts to find a stool near the bar to get a drink.
After about a few minutes:
An old lady walks in with two body guards, both with tooth earrings in left ear, one with red hair, the other blonde. She finds a table and whispers to one. The man with blonde hair walks forward to your group, "The lady Kerowyn Hucrele, wishes to speak to your group, she has lost her two children, and while she dislikes asking for help, she needs it."Last edited by Starbuck_II; 2017-04-03 at 06:55 PM.

Re: (IC) Starbuck's Core-ish Sunless Citadel
Bishop
An intense looking female elf entered the bar and, despite trying to hide it, clearly was sizing up everyone as if looking for threats. She was holding a quarterstaff and wearing a chain shirt under her foreign looking clothing. On her back, a bow and a shield. On her side, a long sword. She had the look of someone who has traveled a long, long ways with perhaps a much longer road ahead.
Walking gracefully she approached the bartender and in common asked, "Good days to you. I heard tale of an apple in this town that heals all ails?"

Re: (IC) Starbuck's Core-ish Sunless Citadel
The bartender, a Garon, answers the lady, "Oh, you must mean the Summer Orb, that is the nickname the townsfolk call it. They say that the apple can heal all wounds and diseases. Even keeps it's powers when cut into four pierces," Garon twirls his mustache at the tips, " the mayor has already bought an apple this summer, paid a pretty coin for it, fifty gold, I heard. He intends to sell it like he does at the end of summer to a big town for eight times the price. Still a bargain with those powers I bet.
But I digress, I tend to over talk, hahoo. It is real, maybe ask the mayor and he'll show you it. Though, you'll have to take his word for it as he can't let you eat it.
We tried to grow seeds, but goblins keep stealin' the saplings. Only right, as they grew the thing, I guess.

Re: (IC) Starbuck's Core-ish Sunless Citadel
Lady Hucrele speaks, "So, more adventurers have come to our little town, how quaint. Look, I'd rather the city watch find them, but I know they left town and the city guards need to stay here to protect it. My children Talgen and Sharwyn left with Sir Bradford, that gnome , and that farm hand Karakas. Sure, I gave them the best studies, Sharwyn was taught a few spells while Talgen was taught swordfighting, but they weren't ready. I don't trust that Bradford, he says he was a paladin, but how do you know?!
Sigh, they left over a month ago, they were going to check our some ruins from an old cult, why people can't leave well enough alone I'll never know. We, Hurcele, are important merchant family and *shedding a tear* I would like to have peace of mind. Please return the signet rings if they be dead. I'll give you 125 gp for either ring, I'll throw in another 5 gp if you have the body... I'd like them to be in family crypt. But, if you can return them in good shape and alive, I'll offer double. I know that last bit is a lost cause... I'm sure if they were alive they'd be back by now... wouldn't they," she starts crying more, she is handed a hankerchief by the red headed bodyguard.
The blonde bodyguard speaks more, "if you need any gear from General Store you can buy it on loan for 1/2 price, and you can return or buying for full later. Just go by there later, she is a little desperate to get them back."Last edited by Starbuck_II; 2017-04-04 at 06:33 PM.

Re: (IC) Starbuck's Core-ish Sunless Citadel
The smile on the young gnome's face turns to a frown as the barkeep ignores him and goes to talk to the elf lady instead. "Well, guess we'll have to find another place to eat, Spud." As he clambers back onto his dog and turns to leave the inn, he sees the gathered group and the old woman with the body guards. Catching the end of the conversation as he rides by, the young gnome turns the dog's head towards the group and nudges into the conversation. "If you need to track something, I'm your man! Well, really, it's Spud here who does all the work, but I'm his travelling buddy, so we're a package deal. People might not have seen where her children went, but animals sure did. I can ask around..."

Totally missed that previous post from you, King Tius.

Hearing the word "paladin", Orindun visibly flinches, remembering his failiures all over again. However, he attempts to console the Lady by saying
"I can't speak for them, but I will try to get them back. I'm sure that we can if everyone helps!"
Almost as an afterthought, he adds
"But we are going to need directions though."

The gnome called Centipete looks on, trying not to roll his eyes. He found most of these people actively unpleasant, but the professional adventurers were better company than the townsfolk... By a margin, in the case of Mrs. Hucrele. He wasn't, quite, enough of a heel to antagonize a distraught mother, though. And she might know something useful. There was a first time for everything....

The young gnome excitedly steers the dog back to the bar to retrieve his food. He places a gold coin carefully on the bar and smiles. "Thank you, Sir. I'll send him outside to eat, just in case."
With some clever maneuvering, the gnome takes both plates outside and returns a minute later holding just the one plate with twice as much asparagus on it. He makes his way back over to the table with the group gathered around it, pulls up a chair, and starts eating.
"So my name's Merbyl. How about the rest of you? If these folks have been gone for over a month, we've probably got enough time to eat, right?"
Just in case, Merbyl starts tucking into his steak quickly.

Faustus buries his face in his hands at Merbyl's insinuation that their task was likely going to be less "rescue" and more "corpse recovery". He was right, of course, but there were things you didn't say in front of a distraught parent, especially when she was a paying client. My name is Faustus Zonaras, and I wouldn't be too hasty to dismiss our chances of finding Talgen and Sharwyn alive.

Re: (IC) Starbuck's Core-ish Sunless Citadel
One of the townsfolk drinking nearby overhears and exclaims, "We all know about the ruins but with the goblins raiding all those who go on the Old Road and general danger, we avoids those areas. Just follow the Old Road, can't miss it. Takes a man about seven miles to finish the journey.
"
The blonde bodyguard adds, "I'd be careful, it isn't just goblins. Someone or something has been mutilating cows. Farmers are getting antsy about letting their cows graze, this is hurting our food supply as they need their grazing time. Even a few traders traveling at night outside the town have been caught cut up and eviscerated when discovered the next morning. "
