Haha....so I've been away from the forum for awhile, and Rich's avatar has actually aged. I love the little touches around here.

Every single time Rich disappears for more than a few weeks, the worry wart in me wonders if his will has a clause in it to post a short synopsis of the entire storyline should anything happen to him. Folks like me who have spent over a third of their life engrossed in this story would never get an ending.

Oh and I hope Rich is ok. That too. ;)

I agree this is usually correct, but I feel the need to give the exception that proves the rule. "There but for the grace of god go I" was originally "there but for the grace of god goes John Bradford". The original has been lost, the modified version is still in use.

I think you misunderstood me. When I said "the familiar stock phrases really are the originals, and the putative 'full' versions are rejoinders that were created at a later date," I was referring only to the three stock phrases discussed in this discussion thread. I was not making a statement about all stock phrases found in the modern English language.

On another note, I feel the need (for some reason) to point out that the moral behind the phrase "curiosity killed the cat" is clearly "curiosity is bad", and I can't believe this is actually something people could debate about.

That may be the surface meaning, but in actual practice it is used to warn people about the potential dangers of unnecessary investigation or snooping into other people's private affairs. That's the thing about delving into the unknown: you can't be sure how it will turn out. I think it is quite possible to think both that curiosity is good and to be wary of the potential dangers.

And of course, people can debate anything. We don't even have to leave the forums to prove that.
