[IC] 3.5/PF [E6-Brawler] Ironfang Invasion
OOC LINK
Night of the Iron Fangs
Our adventure begins in the town of Phaendar, nestled along the southern bank of the Marideth River, a stone’s throw from the Southern Fangwood Forest. Trade comes through the town over Phaendar Bridge, the only suitable place to traverse the swift, rapid-coursed river for 50 miles in either direction. The town of 400 residents rarely sees any excitement, making the Market Festival a major source of news, entertainment, and revenue. The two-day affair, held once every 3 months, gathers farmers and herders from across the Nesmian Plains, as well as woodcutters from the nearby Fangwood and prospectors from the Hollow Hills, to trade for supplies and raw materials. Even traders from the “big city” of Tamran make their way to the event, swelling the town’s population to half again its normal size.
The country of Nirmathas might have only existed for about a century at this point, but the town of Phaendar is almost three times that old, and through all those years its population has never risen above a half-thousand. Still, even this tiny settlement is one of the largest towns in southern Nirmathas, surviving in the war torn region due to both having little value in itself, and being impossible to defend (though taking it in the first place would likely be easy).
A small town on the southwest edge of the Fangwood forest, Phaendar was originally built on the forgotten ruins of a Chelish fort. It stands tall compared to the flat lands that surrounds its southern edge. With no apparent strategic value and no way to sneak up on the town the citizens have not known the toils of war and displacement so common in southern Nirmathas. The town is currently celebrating it's quarterly market festival, a time when the population swells to about 600 as hunters come in from the hinterlands and merchants travel from nearby cities looking for goods. During this time the town is surrounded by a field of tents to accommodate all the new arrivals.
Naturally, such a place offers little in ways of entertainment and therefore the Trade Festival, every three months, is the major event for the town, lending much needed respite, reprieve, and trade in the rugged hinterlands. Drawing in the farmers, herders, hunters, woodcutters, prospectors, traders, and professional merchants from the larger cities - the festival and those it brings is often the only source of news from the civilized lands.
With the first day of the festival drawing to a close, most locals would be retiring to their farms and houses if not for the influx of guests raising the population by half again of its regular number. Parties of locals and visitors are still milling about the town’s market green. With all of the excitement many of the merchants are just now setting down to dinner. Even with cooking fires blazing, the smells of stew and grilled game meats hanging in the air, they keep taking customers and discussing the events of the season - trading wares and tales into the night.
But the party happens all over, particularly at the Taproot Inn, a relatively small building that is almost filled as everyone exchanges their latest stories. Greatest of these story tellers is Aubrin the Green, a once Chernasadro now turned Caydenite cleric. She has the greatest stories around having lived through so much as a member of the rangers. As Phaendar’s market festival draws crowds from all over Nirmathas, many come solely to hear Aubrin recount bawdy tales of adventure from her youth. This night, she held forth at the Taproot, the town's single inn, known to the locals as "the Root."
Spoiler: D. Darren Browne & Wyra Whitemane at the Taproot Inn
Spoiler: image
The Root is owned and run by Jet, a recent transplant to Phaendar of mixed Shoanti and Varisian descent with twin black braids, black eyes, and an iconic teal scarf worn around her waist. Outside, the celebration continues, as raucous shouts carry on the night air. Warmed by the firelight after a long day, any levity comes as a welcome reward to the rough, earthy souls of this riverside trade town.
In particular in the common room of the Taproot Inn a local celebrity Aubrin the Green, ex-ranger turned a priestess of the Drunken God, has gathered a small crowd consisting of the inn keep Jet, a few visiting merchants, their body guards, a couple of local farmers and hunters, and a few individuals of various origins who, at this point, have no idea of their destinies...
Everyone in the Inn intently listens to the ranger as she retells the tales of her earlier exploits with the boastfulness fitting of a Caidenite.
“So there I am, thinking, when will I ever be able to talk to a bear again? So before the grizzly can stand back up, I turn to it and say, ‘All I need is the honey. You can keep the bees!’” The room erupts into laughter as Aubrin finishes her winding story and takes another draught from her tankard. “But it’s fine now. All’s good. She named a cub after me. Someday I’m going to have to check in on little Ow Oh Gods That’s Too Many Bees.”
Jet heads into the back rooms to fulfill a request while crowd members share their own boasts and jokes, and eventually someone tops off Aubrin’s tankard and pushes her back into the center of the room. "All right, all right! Don’t shove,” she slurs a bit. “Okay, Cayden strike me down if this isn’t true—“
The front door explodes into splinters. A cry of agony pierces the chaos. Aubrin lies on the floor, gasping and clutching at the blood gushing from a wound in her chest. A ballista bolt still quivers in the wall behind her. The terrified villagers assembled scream and run for cover. Some rush up stairs to hide while others head for the back rooms intent on escape through the back door.
Two hobgoblins in military dress stand beyond the shattered door, blades drawn. Behind them, lit by the glow of burning homes, dozens—perhaps hundreds—of hobgoblin soldiers march the street. As Phaendar burns you realize that the shouts of celebration are now replaced by the panicked screams of the frightened and dying. Behind them, above the flames and humble rooftops, rises a tower of black stone.
The first one through the door, a tall, squint-eyed brute, looks over the people gathered and leers. "All right, you lot! Drop any weapons you have and kick 'em over. You're working for the Ironfang Legion now," he says, trying to intimidate them into cooperation.
His accomplice, a shorter fellow with a scar over one eye, clutches a backpack in one hand bulging with items. "You'll cooperate, if you know what's good for you!" he shouts, trying to back up his comrade as he brandishes a cruel looking sword in his other hand.
Spoiler: A. Lu Bu Sago at Oreld's Fine Shop
Spoiler: image
Oreld's Fine Shop - labeled with a small shingle hanging out front- is one of the few buildings in town made entirely of stone. Mortared white blocks form the walls of this odd-shaped cottage.
Owned by three generations of healers and herbalists in the Oreld family, Oreld's fine shop supplies Phaendar with remedies, dye, glue, and paint. The shop's owner Vane Oreld, a middle aged man is also the closest thing that Phaendar has to a doctor. He resents the imposition and swears vociferously when his healing skills are required, but he is too much of a perfectionist to let anyone else fill the role. Vane is a middle aged Taldan with light brown skin, amber eyes, dark brown hair, and a neatly trimmed beard. He wears a shirt whose cuffs are stained with unknown substances and breeches under a thick leather apron.
The shop consists primarily of a desk, a few crowded shelves, and a cluttered window display. The alchemist's shop is neatly organized, its shelves filled with jars, bottles, and paper envelopes. A couple discusses softly with Vane whether they need a powder or a cream.
Scorch marks that shift in color from black to dark blue to glimmering violet mar one wall. The door to the shop stands open and you hear a bloody scream from outside.
The front window explodes into splinters. A cry of agony pierces the chaos. Oreld lies on the floor, gasping and clutching at the blood gushing from his neck. A Javelin protrudes from his jugular and wind pipe in a weird way, you hear him wheeze and begin to drown in his own blood. He drops the diaper rash cream he was just extolling the virtues of, the glass jar shattering on the floor. The husband screams. What a mess.
Two hobgoblins in military dress stand beyond the window and doorway, one chuckling wickedly.
The first one through the door, a tall, squint-eyed brute, looks over the few of you and leers. "All right, you three! Drop your weapons and kick 'em over! You're working for the Ironfang Legion now, unless you would prefer to be rations!" he shouts, trying to intimidate the group of you into cooperation.
His accomplice, the taller fellow with the javelins, lets go of his quiver and draws a morningstar. "You will cooperate, or we will make you cooperate. Everyone breaks eventually." he growls low in trade common, trying to back up his comrade.
Behind you a whimper can be heard from the back room. "to the basement, quickly now." you hear someone, a female voice, say.
Spoiler: B. Nomad Chase, Raffa Nimes, and Cpl. Gabriel Ginger at the Phaendar Trading Company
Spoiler: image
Phaendar Trading Company
A signpost by the road announces the clapboard wooden shop and barnlike smithy sharing a single large stone wall to be the Phaendar Trading Company. The smithy's double doors stand open, revealing a large, still-glowing forge within. Two goats and a horse chomp on oats peacefully in the adjacent pen.
The heart of Phaendar is the trading post where farmers, hunters, and artisans come to trade, and where travelers stop in to resupply. The store primarily sells seed, timber, farm supplies, horse shoes, and contracts for raw materials, but all sorts of odds and ends wind up in the small shop.
The stone wall of the smithy is one of the oldest structures in Phaendar, being part of a small fortress built to guard the road when the Chelish army first erected the bridge. The fort collapsed long long ago with its stones and supports looted to construct other buildings, but the town smithy still uses the original fortress's forge.
The current owner of Phaendar Trading Company is the cantankerous and scheming dwarven smith Kining Blondebeard. Despite her readily apparent lack of compassion, she is known to live up to the letter of her agreements and turns out fine metal goods that the town relies upon. Most locals accept her inhospitable personality as "a Dwarf thing" and leave her be. Countless burn scars mar Kining's pale skin and she keeps her iron-gray hair cut in a short wedge.
The trade yard adjacent to the shop has been mostly cleared out for the festival apart from some lumber, a wagon on blocks, and a few chickens running about.
The animal pen looks run down, but serviceable. The horse is awaiting new shoes as the goats drink from the trough. You notice a few buckets hanging from the wall.
In the smithy, the centuries-old forge provides ample space for working iron and steel as well as limited farrier services. A torch is set near the forge in a wall sconce burning bright. The siblings Lirosa and Taidel play on the hayloft ladder. A chain is held on the wall restricting the movement of the work crane. A large anvil, a small anvil, a quenching bucket, hardwood table, and the typical smithy accouterments adorn the room.
On the interior of the shop it is drab and dominated by sacks of seed, bolts of cloth, barrels of nails, and staples like flour and salt. Kining's small bedroom is off to one side, and shows even less decoration. On the walls hang a longsword, two battle axes, a beautiful alchemical silver rapier, and a masterwork light steel shield. leaning against the wall by the counter is a masterwork backpack and a crate with a dozen water skins in it and a climbing kit thrown atop.
As Chase and Raffa Nimes peruse the wares on display they hear the vendor just outside trying in vain to sell some alchemist's fire at nearly a month's wages per bottle. Breaking off his monotone sales pitch you hear him curtly shout About Face!
With the center of town covered in tents, market stalls, and wagons most lines of sight are blocked. As you glance around yourself you see within spittin' distance two hobgoblins in military dress approaching you with weapons drawn! The owner of the trading company is not more than ten feet from you and the wily dwarf sees them too, moving to a hammer rack in the open smithy next to you. You see a flask of what you can only assume is alchemist's fire sailing through the air at the hobgoblins.
Behind them, lit by the glow of burning homes, dozens—perhaps hundreds—of hobgoblin soldiers march the street. Phaendar burns, shouts of celebration now replaced by the panicked screams of the frightened and dying. Behind them, above the flames and humble rooftops, rises a tower of black stone.
A torch is tossed onto the thatch roof from a passing Hobgoblin and a thick smoke begins to rise.

Re: [IC] 3.5/PF [E6-Brawler] Ironfang Invasion
Gabriel Ginger is extolling the virtues of alchemist fire (Poorly) in his monotone pitch, when he see the hobgoblins approach. Were he a cleverer salesperson, he might have said something to the effect of "Like So". Being who he is however all he manages is About Face. His tone is still low with just the slightest hint of urgency (His drill sergeant would be ashamed). He punctuates this with the toss of the vial that was being discussed. He grabs his bow and quiver from behind the stall, and it is only then that he takes in the rest of the scene and is filled with dread and dismay.

Lu Bu
Lu Bu whirls in surprise, his long hair spread by the motion. He looks quickly at Oreld, trying to see if the man might be save, while he moves to a sheltered position.
Spoiler
Heal check? to see if Oreld is at -10 or can be saved. Heal (1d20+6)[18]
Move to the top left corner of the shop behind shelves (cover) and crouch (more cover!)
I assume that the heal check is a standard action. If it's a free action, let me know and I'll ready a spell for next round.

Re: [IC] 3.5/PF [E6-Brawler] Ironfang Invasion
Darren Browne had been half-listening to the Aubrin's tales, half-trying to concentrate, talking to himself in a subdued voice as he reviewed his next performance with Silent Image that was scheduled for tomorrow - what better time than the market festival to entertain his fellow citizens and attract potential future settlers to his new home?
Unfortunately, the sudden entrance of two hobgoblins - soldiers, by the looks of it - and the grim entrance of war into his formerly peaceful life disrupted his daydream.
Perhaps someone else may have been shocked by the sudden burst of violence - Darren had spent more than half of his life in a city constantly preparing for battle, where vigilance was held as one of the highest virtues and mandatory drills for evacuation and self-defense were a natural part of life.
With a deep frown, he rose from his seat - mentally calling to his lifelong friend, Water, to defend him - and raised his voice in a mighty shout: "Everyone, stay calm and move to the back!"
He raised his hand, his inner turmoil too great to think of anything elaborate as he concentrated and called forth the Illusion of a simple, grey stone wall in front of the two hobgoblins. With a flimsy illusion concealing the people inside the inn from the sight of the soldiers, he glanced about, trying to spot anyone else who may be trained in the ways of war who could help in the defense of Phaendar's citizens.
Spoiler: ActionsImmediate action: Activate Shroud of Water to gain +4 armor bonus to AC.
Move action: Stand up
Free: Shout(see above).
Standard: Use Silent Image - as SLA, it has no verbal or somatic components; the hand movements are more for dramatic effect. The image created is a grey wall with coarse texture, mimicking stone covering the three squares in front of the red hobgoblin - the wall is 10' high, or high enough to reach the ceiling of the building if that's within the 6x 10' cube budget Darren is working with.
Will Disbelief at DC 15 if interacted with.
Concerning Illusions:
I'm basing my actions -unless the DM decides otherwise- on These four articles about illusions.

Spoiler: D. Darren Browne & Wyra Whitemane at the Taproot Inn
Spoiler: image
The Root
With but a thought the man in the long coat who saddled up to the table you're at, Darren his name was, conjures a figment of stone across the doorway blocking line of sight to the goblins. You recognize the spell but he said no command word to complete it. The Hobgoblin standing in the doorway gives a start and a growl and screams out "YOUR PARLOR TRICKS WONT FOOL ME, YIELD OR DIE" as you see the tip of (presumably) his sword wave through the conjured wall.
This is all too much for the assembled crowd. Many stand up with their hands up, a few move towards the back room. The illusion is very good, even Wyra believes you just conjured it into being. Five of the commoners begin moving towards the front door with heads low and hands high. whimpers of "please don't kill me", and "we yield" drift to your ears. From their movements you fear some of the commoners can see through the illusion but don't have the will to withstand the intimidation.

The javelin really took a toll on Vane, his eyes look blank as he drowns in his own blood slowly. You know that even if his wounds are healed in time he may still not survive.
As you rush forward the first Hobgoblin's eyes go wide, not having expected any resistance. As you level your finger at him he grits his teeth in expectation one moment, wincing at the scalding pain the next. They both let out disquieting screams as their skin begins to boil and peel away. The closer hobgoblin clutches at his face and begins to backpedal. The laughing hobgoblin's mirth is curtly cut short as his nose begins to fall away, blisters erupting instantly across the left side of his face, skin luffing off curdling from the inside. You see him vomit on his chin, his sword that he just drew falling from his hand absently. Standing stunned he reaches into his jacket...
You notice the wife in her maternal glory barely missing a beat, moving behind the counter both for cover and to search frantically for a remedy. The husband stands there dumbly, not even moving away from the window, he stares blankly at his childhood friend bleeding out on the floor, uncomprehending. From the back room you hear the sound of a door latch clicking into place.

Spoiler: Konwledge History DC16 - Lu BuYou recognize the insignia on the shoulder of their uniforms, these are Ironfang Legion soldiers. The mercenaries were responsible for the Ramgate Massacre two years ago, they have been absent from the battlefield ever since. What they are doing here or who they could be working for is beyond your comprehension. You know that they are trained almost as well as they are equipped preferring ambush tactics and overwhelming force. They only take prisoners of those who are docile, they have no qualms of killing a potential slave if it has an attitude.
The Ironfang Legion served Molthune loyally as one of its infamous “monster regiments,” mercenary units of nonhuman creatures, hired without official sanction to pillage during the coflict between Molthune and Nirmathas. The force served with distinction and earned a reputation for innovative tactics and fearless soldiers, culminating in a devastating rout of Nirmathi guerrillas assaulting Fort Ramgate (now referred to as the Ramgate Massacre by its few Nirmathi survivors). Without a word, the Ironfangs vanished shortly thereafter, soon followed by several other monster regiments, quickly depleting Molthune’s mercenary forces.
Two years ago General Hakar needed to fortify Fort Ramgate against Nirmathi militia fighters, so he hired some (34) hobgoblin mercenaries called Fortune's Blood (They weren't the Ironfang Legion yet). Then, during summer, sixty Nirmathi waged a full on assault on Fort Ramgate under the cover of night. A spy learned of the attack and warned the hobgoblins, and while the Nirmathi attacked a bunch of empty tents the hobgoblins came out of hiding and swarmed them, killing 55 of them and loosing only six.
While the surviving five fled the hobgoblins turned on the civilian supporters in the woods slaughtering the fletchers, healers, and scouts the rebels brought with them. This was the Ramgate Massacre. Molthrune had a thing against killing unarmed civilians, however, and the entire company was dismissed.

As the Alchemist's fire strikes true the hobgoblins howl in pain. It splashes down spraying the trailing Hobgoblin and his eyes go wide with rage. He raises his shield and charges forth at Cpl. Ginger bending low to smash the table into his face.
Shoulder rolling low as he plows through the flames he raises the table up like a bulwark and presses forward pushing you back. His weight behind the table is smashes into you hard, you feel glass crunching against your chest as bottles go flying around you.
You notice the dwarf hefting a large forge hammer, turning to engage.
A hundred feet away another pair of Hobgoblins turn to see their compatriot on fire and screaming. Raffa can see a clear shot to them through the doorway. As they notice Cpl. Ginger engaged they start heading that way.
The smoke from the rooftop begins to turn to flames... another minute and the whole roof will be on fire.
Spoiler: Round 1
Nomad Chase is now considered to be either delaying his turn or holding an action. when he gets back he can take a standard action or take his whole turn and move down the initiative as appropriate. If we make it all the way back around I will have him draw his weapon and defend himself.

As the half-orc strides forward he draws his bow, knocks an arrow, whispers an arcane word to complete his cantrip, and releases. It is beautifully precise and well trained, but just as he releases; the hobgoblin, who was struck with the Alchemist's Fire, drops to a knee in his efforts to extinguish the flames. The arrow sails off to hit the wall of a building and clatter to the ground. Having extinguished the flames his head snaps up quickly as he hears the arrow sail by his ear, hatred in his eyes he turns on his heel and readies his shield.

Re: [IC] 3.5/PF [E6-Brawler] Ironfang Invasion
Wyra Whitemane
The sudden turnabout from lighthearted revelry to savage brutality left Wyra’s head spinning, but she was no milk-blooded turncoat to turn over her weapon to the likes of these.
The man, Darren, who had shared her table had tried some illusion. Perhaps he could try another? “If you can give them something to fight, we can begin an evacuation,” she suggested quietly. “There is a soldier I knew from the war, Gabriel, that I saw at the trading company. He can help us evacuate the town, or what remains of it, north of the river.”
With a servant of warm-hearted Cayden lying prone upon the floor, her immediate path was clear. Those patrons not cowed by the invader’s threat seemed already to be pushing their way to the back of the room, and a possible path of escape. Springing from her chair Wyra pushed through the press of bodies, calling past the frightened patrons toward the Goblinoid foe.
“Freedom is of the gods, cur, and not so readily surrendered. My life and sword are sworn to holy Sarenrae, and you shall have neither. Honest folk such as these will not bend the knee to ill-omened lickspittles like you.”
With her left hand resting on the hilt of her blade, Wyra channelled the energy of her divine mistress into the fallen Aubrin who lay at her feet, praying quietly, “May the Dawnflower return you to us fallen shepherd, for your flock needs tending, and my blade is no crook.”

Nomad Chase
Chase had been caught more off-guard by these events, but was ready for combat. Moving outside, Chase moved behind the archer (pulling out his aklys) and took his place for the battle that was upon them. He made sure to let the archer know he was no enemy.
"I'll keep him from charging."
Chase prepares for the hobgoblin to strike, ready to trip any who approach the archer.
Spoiler: OOCChase had delayed his turn, and has moved 15 feet west by northwest to just behind and to the left of Raffa. He has readied an action for a trip attempt to any enemy who move within 15 feet of him.Last edited by Just Helping; 2017-05-18 at 10:11 PM.

The Root
Laying your hands upon Aubrin her eyes snap open with a jolt. No longer stunned but still quite staggered Aubrin props herself up against the wall a bit and burbles out some vacant observations about the situation;
"It... it sounds like there is an army outside the door. How did they fall on us without beeing seen? These damn plains are so flat you can see an elk from two days off, let alone an army..."
she winces and presses her hands against the bloody hole in her chest. "They sound large... too large to fight on the ground like fools... " her head lolls as she drifts and then snaps back to. "We need to gather what we can, cross the bridge, and hide out in the Fangwood. I-I know a few secrets, and a few people that may keep us safe. Should probably figure out how to take down the bridge while we are at it, else they'll just march across afore we have a chance to hide."
The Hobgoblins command the crowd from the front entrance, moving aside and letting them pass to the waiting slavers outside.

(d20+3)[7] LuBu's Perception
(d20+3)[20] LuBu's Sense Motive; no novice to battle, you anticipate that the Hobgoblin is waiting in ambush outside the door.

As the table falls down upon you a wince of pain, but more in anticipation, creases your face. As bottles go flying you feel glass crunching, crushing, against your chest. Eyes wide in horror you pray that it isn't the acid or glue. The horse whinnies and rears nearly kicking the water tough over.
Two of the villagers inside grab swords and shields off of the walls and form up next to Chase. "we'll kill 'em dead" says one. The other looks over his shoulder at the burning roof, his eyes going wide "Mark! Get out of there!" he yells.
Blondebeard, now equipped with a great maul, strides forward towards the hobgoblin who is upon you taking his flank. Smashing down with brutal might The Blondebeard lets out a deafening war scream as she caves in the skull of the hobgoblin that bull rushed Cpl. Ginger. His head splits open with a sickening splatter, brains painting your coat. His corpse collapses against the table. "BWAAAGH!! .. GET THE **** OFF MY LAND!!!" she screams.

Darren Browne
The illusory wall conjured by Darren hadn't served its purpose to defend civilians from the wrath of war. Already, the cold claw of fear and hopelessness had wormed its way into the breast of many a citizen of Phaendar, some choosing to relinquish their freedom in the faint hope of saving their skin.
Though he, too, was briefly shaken by the soldier's rage, his concentration faltered and the "wall" faded away, Darren Browne chose to do his best in spite of the situation.
Reaching out through the planar fabric, he drew strength from the elemental plane of water and exclaimed in the tongue of Heaven: "നിയമദാതാവും ദൈവഭക്തനുമായ എന്റെ ഭവനത്തെ സംരക്ഷിക്കാനുള്ള ശക്തി എനിക്കു നൽകണമേ!"
Spoiler: CelestialLawgiver, Judge of the Gods, grant me the strength to defend my home!
The brief invocation of his divine patron was accompanied and almost rendered unintellegible by a large display of elemental fury as hundreds of tiny, glittering shards appeared around Darren with the sound of breaking ice. The man in a trenchcoat raised both hands, the fingers splayed as he stretched his arms and made a grasping gesture, seemingly pulling something together that shed a brilliant, blue glow through his two hands that were cupped around it - he shifted his stance as he stared intently at the one who had issued the threat.

His friend yells out in joy "Oh thank the gods! Thank you so much... Vane! Vane! are you with us?!" he kneels down by Vane's head, gingerly reaching for the javelin still protruding from his neck.
The door to the back room opens and Sharon peeks out, her eyes going wide in horror. "Oh my god Vane! She throws the door open the rest of the way, entering the room. Jason, help me get him in here!" Wyra Whitemane
Every second was critical, and Wyra knew she could not both organise a retreat and fight this battle. Still recovering from her injury, Aubrin would have to serve the former role. "Aubrin, we cannot flee without supplies. Those who cannot fight must gather what they can from the inn before we make our push for the bridge." Wyra grabbed the cleric's shoulder in a gesture of reassurance, "Remember that we serve a higher calling. We serve not because of our own ability, but because of the need that presents itself. Have faith."
With that, Wyra turned back toward the Hobgoblin that was threatening the injured Daniel, uttered a wordless warcry, charged toward the brute, drawing her falchion from its sheath as she did so, and delivering a furious blow into the beast's flank.

(Be sure to read Post #16 first.)
Offering Aubrin heartening words, you turn to face your adversary. Seeing his back exposed, while he is distracted by his sadistic glee, you see ample opportunity to strike vengeance down upon him. Charging forth, paying the toppling patrons no more mind than to not twist your ankle, you strike out with your falchion slicing deftly into the hobgoblin’s flank and drawing forth a deep bellow of pain. On the ground you see one of the townsfolk kick out at the lead hobgoblin’s ankle, attempting to throw him off balance.
Behind you his friend yells out "They resist us! " You hear his pounding footfalls approach with celerity and twist just in time to mitigate the blow, he draws blood, but just barely.
Having heard your words and taken them to heart Aubrin calls out to the room as she draws forth a healing potion from her bandoleer.
"HAVE FAITH FRIENDS, RALLY TO ME! We retreat to the Fangwood! Gather what you can fast, afore we move."
Aubrin winces in pain again as she begins raising the potion to her lips.
The two townsfolk closest to her heed her words and help her to her feet. "thank the gods you are alive, let me help you up."
The townsfolk by the kitchen door move to the bar and start collecting the essential supplies. "only what we need now. Whiskey, Rye, Mead... - NO! LEAVE THE WINE PAUL!"

(Be sure to read Post #16 first.)
Upon seeing Sharon he stops struggling immediately and gives a visible, shuddering, sigh of relief.
As Sharon sees Vane she surges forward with a glance out the window, eyes wide she grabs him roughly grasping his upper body and the javelin together with a seemingly well practiced half-nelson and begins dragging him backwards toward the… operating room. "Vane, for the love of god, stay with us…” Jason helps the best he can grabbing Vane’s legs for her. "Just bring everything Nancy" .
Holding a pile of envelopes filled dried herbs and some assorted vials Nancy brings them in close and looks around herself quickly grabbing a few more things off of the shelf.
In the back room you can make out a tall stiff bed and a couple of tables with surgical instruments arrayed. A small boy, no more than four or five sits in the corner by the bed against the wall, whimpering.
With these two new enemies approaching fear begins to clamp down on your senses.

(d20+3)[15] LuBu's Perception
Spoiler: LuBu's Sense PerceptionWith the door frame, shelving, and the glass on the floor the entry is pretty defensible.

First out of the storefront of the Trading Company comes a canny half-orc archer, and behind him a seasoned fighter with an aklys. A moment later two younger men form up on either side of the fighter with their shields raised.
Having sold these young fighters some kindness earlier, you caught their names, Seth and Stephen, cousins if you recall correctly. Cpl. Ginger calls out to the younger one "Stephen! Fetch water for the roof! You’re just a target standing out there! Quickly now! Hurry up!

Re: [IC] 3.5/PF [E6-Brawler] Ironfang Invasion
Lu Bu
Spoiler: old stuffSafe for the moment, Lu Bu retrieves a small flask of beaten copper from one of the pockets on his robe. He tugs at the cork for a moment, then throws back his head and chugs the potion in a single gulp. Magic flows into his body as the effects hit, seeming to push out through his skin before disappearing.
He crouches next to the broken window, looking out at the three hobgoblins.
Spoiler
Potions are only around 1-2oz, not even a mouthful in size really.
Potion of Mage Armor, +4 AC, 1 hour duration.
AC 16, HP11.
Lu Bu's eyes widen as he spots a grenade being readied. He quickly pulls a scroll from a pocket, and invokes the magic, covering most of the inside of the shop - as well as the outside - in a thick grey fog, making it impossible for the grenadier to aim effectively at the window or doorway of the building.
Spoiler
Using my scroll of Obscuring Mist. It radiates from a grid intersection, and I'm using the most northwesterly one, so that the treatment room to the south is mostly unaffected.
If I'm really, really lucky, she'll throw the grenade at the door (easier target than a window), and hit the guy at the door instead!
AC 12, HP11

Phaendar Trading Company
Raffa takes a few deep breaths, then moves away from the trading company, moving into cover at the corner of the nearby building, and shoots back at one of the archers, shot going wide.
He mutters to himself. "come on, come in closer you astards, i'll show you".
Chase calls out to the remaining warrior. "Seth, I can hold here. Help the kids in the barn." Then he throws his aklys out to trip the guarded one in front and approaches.
Barely avoiding getting his legs swept the hobgoblin appears to try to keep pace with Chase, backing up as he advances. Suddenly the hobgoblin charges forwards, feigning a stab and then sweeping out Chase's legs with his shield! An arrow streaks in from the north but flies over where Chase once was as he falls prone.
The Blondebeard, wailing in fury, rushes forth at the nearest hobgoblin swinging her mighty hammer down upon him in a great arc as he trips Chase. As you fall to a knee, an arrow streaking over where you once were, you hear the sickening crack of a spine breaking. The hobgoblin slumps into a pile of himself, unconscious, chest heaving.
"AND YOU!" Blondebeard screams.
With Stephen running for water Seth hesitates for a moment longer, doing what he can to aid you, before heading in to the barn to see who is left inside.

Darren Browne
Darren Browne
Pain. Fierce, staggering pain lanced through Darren as cold steel penetrated his coat, his wollen vest and pierced his belly. He could see the sadistic glee on the hobgoblin's face, before the chaos of combat continued and a woman with minor elven features - curious what details one noticed when your senses were amplified by adrenaline and fear - drew a falchion and charged to his aid, cutting the callous soldier who wounded him.
He was effectively pinned, his back to the wall, the bar to his right, the table to his left...but the wooden stool just behind him gave him an idea.
Swiftly ascending, he called out "Someone use a table to bar the back door, before more soldiers break in!"
He drew his dagger with his left, gloved hand from his belt, then fixed the blood-crazed eyes of the hobgoblin in front of him with a piercing glare and unleashed another freezing ray at point-blank range into his face.
Spoiler: Actions5'-step on the stool he was previously (At the start of Round 1) sitting on, gaining higher ground and preparing to move over the bar on future turns. The stool could be sundered/kicked away, which would likely force a reflex save for Darren to avoid falling prone.
Move action: Command locals(see speech above). We were lucky once, that the door resisted. Better prevent it from happening altogether. Appended action: Draw Weapon(dagger).
Standard: Use Kinetic Blast on G1, provoking TWO AoOs(1st because it's an SLA, 2nd because it is a ranged attack in melee): (1d20+5)[21] vs touch AC; range 30', (1d6+2)[6] cold dmg.

Re: [IC] 3.5/PF [E6-Brawler] Ironfang Invasion
Wyra
Wyra gasped as the steel blade slammed into her collarbone, but recovered quickly, as her armor bore the brunt of the impact. Aubrin had the help of the townsfolk and it seemed the spellcaster Darren was in more immediate danger, though he had driven the hobgoblin leader backwards with the force of his conjuration.
She slashed at the stricken hobgoblin as it moved past her, hoping to fell one of her enemies before more joined the fray and they were overwhelmed. As her blow struck true, she called out in victory, but knew the worst was still to come.
She turned toward the hobgoblin that had struck her, "Know that your own fate is the same, swine, should you continue this tyrannical course."
She called out to Aubrin and Darren "There are more of these creatures in the town square, and others breaking in from behind. The path to safety must lie to the north, and the bridge there, but if we can secure things here, I will make for the shrine, and then the trading company. We must save who we can."

Nomad Chase
Sighing at the ironic attack, Chase drops what hold he has of the aklys to stand up, pulling out his spiked chain as he does so. As much of a shame as it was, Chase doubted that he could convince the shopkeeper to halt her more successful attacks to save the trading post, and Chase himself was not sure how to do so himself. Still, nothing ventured.
"We'll be able to rout these invaders, but might you try to save your shop?" Chase asked, readying once again to trip another opponent.

Re: [IC] 3.5/PF [E6-Brawler] Ironfang Invasion
Raffa Nimes crumples against the hobgoblin as the sword pierces his mail shirt and his body. Then he straightens up, and spits in the hobgoblin's face as he pushes himself back and off the blade with a one-handed shove.
Raffa coughs out a spell, and an arrow hammers into the hobgoblin's armor, freezing his furs solid and covering him in a fine haze of powdery snow, but the second arrow takes him hard.

Re: [IC] 3.5/PF [E6-Brawler] Ironfang Invasion
Spoiler: D. Darren Browne & Wyra Whitemane at the Taproot Inn
Spoiler: image
The Root
From atop your stool you gain a better vantage of the scene at the Root. Having delt a hideous blow to the hobgoblin leader moments after Aubrin's words of encouragement, the crowd begins to take heart.
Scrambling to get out of immediate danger the hobgoblin takes three steps towards the door, swinging at you in rage and missing. No sooner does his blade whip through the air than the half-elf takes the opening cutting deep into him again, felling the beast to the ground, his sword clattering onto the floor at your feet. Calling out in victory she turns to face his accomplice as he reclaims his sword from the grasp of her armor and she calls out a challenge. "Know that your own fate is the same, swine, should you continue this tyrannical course." She warns him as the commoner who was assisting you gets himself off of the floor and moves to assist Wyra.
She calls out to Aubrin and you "There are more of these creatures in the town square, and others breaking in from behind. The path to safety must lie to the north, and the bridge there, but if we can secure things here, I will make for the shrine, and then the trading company. We must save who we can."
Out front you see two more hobgoblins, one of them binding prisoners, the other intimidating the patrons into submission as they leave the Inn.
No sooner than your words escape your lips for the townsfolk to bar the back door that you hear it splinter and give way. Dagger in hand you look over the bar to see the townsfolk looting the liquor give a start at the sound and begin scrambling for something to defend themselves with. You hear a yelp from the back room and the ring of steel.
As Aubrin is helped to her feet she throws back a potion and her chest wound mends a bit more. "Get me back there and put a sword in my hand." she says to the two helping her stand, and they comply, helping her walk towards the door to the kitchen at the back of the room. "And you two!" She snaps at the two behind the bar "Get that cask of fresh water down, we will need it more than the rum. We will be leaving out the back door."

Spoiler: A. Lu Bu Sago at Oreld's Fine Shop
Spoiler: image
Oreld's Fine Shop
As the obscuring mist seeps up through the floor and envelops the room you nearly knock a bottle off of the shelf, as it rocks back and forth you grab it to silence it, lest your position be given away.
Outside you can hear the platemail squeaking, ever closer. From just twenty feet away you can hear his voice as he speaks quietly, likely to the one attempting to hide behind the door frame. "Damnable Elf Magics. Where is the wind when you need it?" And then loudly, "Balor! smoke out that Elf! I have the door!"
a few seconds pass before you hear the sound of glass breaking violently.
you see Nancy, at arm's reach just beyond the counter, throw up a shoulder as she turns, guarding her face.
"Oh. Bloody hell.” escapes Sharon's lips.
"Wha-" Jason begins a reply.
The crying from the back room grows louder.
The ensuing explosion rips through the room.
Vane cries out as the acid and entrails spray over him and he watches Sharon fall to the floor, unconscious and severely wounded. Her hold on him falling loose the javelin lolls reopening his wound. As Jason is disemboweled by the grenade his eyes roll back and he falls to his knees, and onto his face. His wife Nancy looks up as her guard falls to see Jason falling to the ground, green flames catching his clothing ablaze. She screams out for him, face twisting in horror. "JASON?! JASON!" she rounds the counter and falls over him, the reagents falling to the floor between them.
Spoiler: Round 4
RD 4-
S[4] Vane Oreld - Stunned (javelin & blood in lungs - fix one condition to move to staggered)
S[22] The crowd at Oreld's Shop (dragging vane, searching for equipment, DIAF)
S[19] G3 -7 (steam), +2 potion, Held Action: minding doorway (Obscuring Mist)
S[18] Lu Bu Sago @Oreld's (healing belt, Scroll of obscuring mist, take cover, command: eggshell, Casting Sleep)
S[17] the scene at Oreld's Fine Shop, Round 4
[edit] thank you Nova for the clarification.
Jason is at -7 health, bleeding out unconscious (4 Acid Damage, 4 Fire damage, +2 damage via alchemist's Int of 15)
his wife, Nancy is behind the counter so I will rule she took half of the splash damage, this is a DM fiat I believe (2/4 HP, Aristocrat 1)
Sharon Oreld was at 3/3 health (Adept 1) and is now at -1 health, bleeding out unconscious (1 Acid, 1 Fire, +2 via alchemist's Int of 15)
Vane Oreld was at 8/8 health since your healing belt put him to full, but he has a javelin through his neck and lungs full of blood and is therefore effectively Stunned until this can be remedied. He takes 4 splash damage (1 fire, 1 acid, +2 damage via alchemist's Int of 15)
[/endedit]
**
Lu Bu's Sense Motive
Spoiler: LuBu's Sense MotiveThey want to put Vane onto the operating bed and heal him up. Besides you, only Sharon sees that a grenade is about to come through the window. She did not drag Vane as far as she had hoped and now, she fears, they may all die. You notice Sharon glance up to you quickly as she drags Vane, you presume she is hoping that you can at least buy her some time.
Lu Bu's Perception
Spoiler: LuBu's Sense PerceptionWith the door frame, shelving, and the glass on the floor the entry is pretty defensible.

Spoiler: B. Nomad Chase, Raffa Nimes, and Cpl. Gabriel Ginger at the Phaendar Trading Company
Spoiler: image
Phaendar Trading Company
Get those animals out, and salvage what ya can, we're ta lose the building! were the last words out of your mouth before taking cover behind the table and drawing out your bow. As you drop back behind the cover you are pretty sure that the arrow didn't sink deep enough to do any real damage.
As you ready yourself you see the figures rushing in from the west are indeed more hobgoblins. They seem to be everywhere. Hundreds fallen upon you with no warning at all. A huge tower of black stone in the center of town where there was nothing there just 30 seconds prior. None of it makes sense. Just then you hear the half-orc grunt in pain and you can only guess that he was struck by the marauding hobgoblins. You hear arcane words and a chain being readied.
You hear the fighter say "We'll be able to rout these invaders, but might you try to save your shop?".
The dwarf, Kinning Blondbeard by name, grins wryly at the fighter as he picks himself up out of the dirt. "BOYS! GET THIS DAMNED FIRE OUT, WE NEED TO HOLE UP FOR A MINUTE AND GATHER SUPPLIES. THEIR WILL BE NO HOLDING THE TOWN, ITS TO THE FANGWOOD WITH US."
"But there are two more hiding in the hayloft" says Seth, as he enters the barn. As Stephen attempts to calm the horses preparing to open the gate he looks over his shoulder at the burning roof, his eyes going wide "Mark! The roof is on fire! Help me put it out!" he yells. A moment later a wiry young many comes out of the storefront eyes worried, hesitantly crossing the trade yard over to the stables as arrows fall around him. The half stuffed backpack of supplies left sitting on in the storefront by the door.
Blondebeard pulls out a potion, offering it forth to Chase "Follow me" she says, turning towards the pinned down half-orc archer. As you follow her gaze you see him crumpling under the weight of a heavy thrust from the first hobgoblin charging in from the west. The scraping of metal is plain on your ears as he extracts himself from the blade, stepping back, and firing two arrows off in rapid succession. One finding purchase with a hollow thud. The air leaves the hobgoblin's chest with a wheeze.
With a start you realize the other hobgoblin from the west has freed his sword and is now moving at you fast! His longsword drawn, he whirls it down and around at you, but thankfully you dodge it just in time. Leaping back you ready a grenade.
An arrow whirs past you from the north, as your neck whips about you see it thud firmly into Chase's chest.

[18] Cpl. Gabriel Ginger's Sense Motive
Spoiler: Cpl. Gabriel Ginger's Sense MotiveThe hobgoblins want to keep the pressure on, keep you engaging until their reinforcements arrive.
[25] Cpl. Gabriel Ginger's Perception
Spoiler: Cpl. Gabriel Ginger's PerceptionThese aren't the only hobgoblins coming from the west, more footsteps yet approach. You catch a glimpse of an arrow going over your head, missing Mark as he makes a bolt from the storefront door.
Spoiler: Raffa Nimes's PerceptionAs you approach the building across the way trying to gain cover from the archers you see two more hobgoblins coming towards the Trade Company from the west. As two villagers flee before them, the trailing one is run through with a longsword, falling to the ground unconscious, bleeding out. The second hobgoblin looks to you with challenge in his eyes.
He charges forth, seeing you clearly with his darkvision. Deep into your chest he stabs, puncturing your stomach. Your stomach acid begins poring over your small intestines and you see red. Leaping back your rigorous training takes hold as arcane words escape your lips and your bowstring twangs twice in rapid succession.
Spoiler: Nomad Chase's Sense MotiveThe Dwarf seems pretty pissed to have hobgoblins sacking her town. You have distracted her for the moment and she commands the locals to help her with the fire. Few would disobey her command, and they likely find it preferable to wading into melee with these fierce mercenaries.
Spoiler: Nomad Chase's PerceptionInside the building behind you can hear Mark drop the bag of things and move to the dwarf's command. To the southwest in the stable the horses and mules begin to calm at the behest of Seth and Stephen. Smoke begins to creep into the storefront behind you and curl out the front door.
The half-orc archer crossed the street in an attempt to gain some cover against the enemy archers, strafing and firing towards them as you see one of the hobgoblins coming in from the west charge into his back with a sure strike. He stumbles backward off of the blade spitting on the hobgoblin, and then in the blink of an eye he whispers a spell, knocks an arrow and lets fly, knocks an arrow and lets fly. The second one striking true dead centermass on the hobgoblin, you can hear the wind go out of him from here.
