Sometimes I feel like the whole world is a sin (x) while I'm sin (x + 0.25).

Or something similar anyway.

Well look at the bright side, at least you're not a cos(x) and the rest being a sin(x). Although, I could see that having its benefits. But I have to say, tan(x) FTW!

No; the original post is right. f(x-a) shifts the graph to the right by a. f(x+a) shifts the graph to the left by a.

I know what you mean, although for me it's a little bit more like the world is sin(x) and I'm 1.2sin(x+(pi/12))+.1, if that makes any sense at all. Of course, it's possible I'm just some chaotic function.

You know I don't get trig (haven't taken it). I always ask people what cosine and when do you use it. They always 'I dunno'.

I use trigonometry occasionally at work. I find the areas paving or grass or decking and sometimes I need to find the surface area of roof from plan taking into consideration the slope.

I sometimes feel like I'm 0.8*sin(x) where everyone else sin(x) as my low points aren't so low but my high points aren't so high. Like a kind of repression.

Other than when using a graphing calculator, I could never solve (sin) (cos) and (tan) equations. I also never been given an instance where they would have been useful to figure out anything. To this day, I can only assume they somehow are usful for finding radio stations or something similar.

Sorry to hear that. If it makes you feel any better, we could hire a statistician to help you figure out why you are out of sync. At the very least, he can tell you that 30% more of the population feels just like you do, and that 50% of his statisics are made up on the spot.

I must be a bit different to most in that I saw the pabove plot and thought "why's the x-axis in numbers and not multiples of pi. And why is the y-axis not numbered?" I'm assuming this makes me a nerd, or just someone that's docked students too many marks for not labeling axes.

I'm not certain I could get used to all the assymptotes. Maybe tan (0.25x) would be a bit easier, though.

In Pre-Calc we mostly used trig to find unknown angles and distances. Things like "A 10-ft. pole is stuck in the ground at an angle. The top of the pole extends 5 ft. away from where it enters the ground. What angle does the pole make with the ground?" I've never had to do that type of problem in a practical situation, though.

In Physics class we used a lot of trig when dealing with waveforms. This includes your radio wave example.

That's how you know he's a real statistician. For non-statisticians, a full 90% of statsitics are made up on the spot.

Trigonometry... is the thing in everyone's heart which causes my head to hurt when they discuss it. It's a miracle that I got a B+ this year.

Oh, don't complain. At least a basic trig class will let you understand them. As for me, I find people to be more like the Dirichlet function, while I'm sin(x+2^(1/2)). At least we as fellow trig functions will no doubt get along well. I mean, who else can understand being 1/2 for so many values of x?
