MLP: Friendship Is Magic is a reboot of the MLP franchise by Powerpuff Girls artist Lauren Faust. The show's writing and production engendered a large fanbase outside of the intended target audience.

This long-running thread is not only a place to discuss MLP, both official releases and the vast array of fanworks, but has become a mini-community in and of itself.

It's a clever show. It has excellent writing, character dynamics, humor, animation, and generally treats kids seriously rather than condescending to them. It has every right to be a 20 minute corporate committee designed infomercial, but it's not.

> If I want to get into the show, where do I start?

A good starting point is to watch the episodes in order. The show is available on Netflixs in many countries, but, at a pinch, can usually be found with some searching one youtube or dailymotion. Search for "Friendship is Magic Episode 1" and you should find the series pretty easily.

EG5 E2: Movie Magic, thoughts as I watch.

It's a volcano with continuous lava waterfall. Not as impressive as Lord Vader's Dwarf Fortress style lair on Mustafar in Star Wars: Rogue One, but still nice.
They're making a Daring Do film? How did they get permission for that? Maybe A. K. Yearling, who is personally a friend of Rainbow Dash, has persuaded the publishers. Or am I taking this story too seriously?
Ah, they're not making the film, they're just spectators watching making the film. That's much more realistic. Sometimes TV series are recorded with an audience watching, or at least they used to be when I was young. I don't find that likely for a really successful franchise like Daring Do, but it's not much of a stretch to let just a few people watch as a special favor.
(“Little? This is Daring Do we're talking about! This movie is gonna be huge!”) Yep, Rainbow Dash agrees with me that it's a big franchise.
They have an actress playing Daring Do? What? Don't they just film most of Daring Do's actual adventures on scene live, giving some of the profit to the lead villains too so they let the filming staff work, and let the real Daring Do fill in for the few scenes they have to recreate in a studio? Oh well.
She just takes the candy bar wrapper from the scene? But that's going to be an important clue that leads Daring Do to discover Mojo's plan. It's got to be there on the set.
I'm afraid I can't share the enthusiasm of these girls here. Movies are sausage or beer or any other industry, you can enjoy them better if you don't know how they're made.
A girl they just met is leading Twilight and Rainbow into Caballeron's secret lair? I'd be more suspicious. What if she's actually working for Caballeron and wants to capture them? They don't have Quibble Pants here to save them this time.
(“Where are my imported peanut butter praline crunch bars?”) Water imported from Rainbow Falls, floral arrangements from the royal Canterlot gardens (no wait, Canterlot doesn't have a royal castle garden in this universe), chocolate éclairs made by Gustave le Grand, a selection of crystals from the Crystal Empire (you mean crystals from that cave next to Camp Everfree?), freshly picked cherries from Cherry Jubilee's farm separated red from yellow.
(Rainbow Dash: “Maybe I'll just go take one more peek at them [the relics].”) Oh no! Will the relics go missing too after the dress? A. K. Yearling will be furious!
Good thing Twilight Sparkle is genre savvy and knows she has to track down who is sabotaging the film. Must be the actress who wants to force the producer to pay them a gazillion more bottles of Rainbow Falls water in exchange for extending her stay by one more month. Or perhaps her manager Svengallop, but we haven't seen him yet, and it's almost too late to introduce him now.
Great! Sunset is going to help Twilight! She'd going to get a significant role in EG again, like she should. She needs all the screen time she can get, since she got very few lines in E1, and probably won't be able to appear outside of EG.
(Sunset: “Why don't Fluttershy, Pinkie, Spike, and I follow Chestnut Magnifico and see if we can find anything out?”) You're taking Pinkie Pie and two other people on a stealth mission? Are you crazy?
(“My geode gives me super speed”) Ah. So just getting superpowers by ponying up like in EG3 wasn't enough, you just had to add that line to the script to acknowledge EG4. I don't like this. You should just have kept the episodes happening between EG3 and EG4 in universe if you want to use the existing stories.
The cupcake fountain power was in you all the time, Pinkie!
Haha, Sunset is dressed up as the Mane-iac.
Wait, the mysterious cloaked figure has the pendant Twilight has got from Lord Tirek? How is that even here? Also, pity that they don't have the superpowers of the actual Power Ponies, like Pinkie's super-speed to catch up with the cloaked guy and Applejack's psychic rope control for getting out of the rope net animal trap.
Oh I see, the actress's name is Chestnut, and she has a … (looks up how the English words for nuts work again for the hundredth time) a hazelnut pendant hanging around her neck, but perhaps it could be a badly drawn chestnut too.
(Security guy leads the cloaked Juniper away. Chestnut enters.) Ah, now she has a nuts pattern on her skirt too. She takes her theme seriously.
This was certainly better than E1, but I'm still not quite satisfied with it. I guess it's a good episode taken alone, but the four EG movies were so awesome it's hard to make anything worthy of them. Oh well.

I hereby declare the opening of Ponythread's first formal World Waifu Wars!

For too long we have held back from declaring the pure love we hold for our waifus, and for too long we have allowed others to have the Wrong Opinions on the Internet. It's time to settle this once and for all!

Obviously Best Waifu: Sunset Shimmer. She's actually criminal levels of waifuisity, holy crap - she is like the ur-waifu from which all other waifus before and since have descended. She's got it all - magical empathy, sexy demon form, leather jacket, blue dress, mind control, tragic backstory, adorkable horse form, guitarist, is horse-legal even if not high school legal - it's like Hasbro sat down in a lab and distilled pure waif into a bacon-haired horse girl.

Clearly Best Waifu: Rainbow Dash. Yeah she's Rainbow Dash and everything that comes with that (loud, competitive, Rainbow Dash, etc, etc). But she's also the one who'd always be fun. Applejack's idea of a hot date would be washing the dishes, Fluttershy seems cute in theory but shyness is just another word for bad at conversation, Rarity - who needs the drama? Rainbow Dash's defining trait is that she's always up for anything and if you can phrase it in the form of a bet or a dare you can get her into any hobby.

Secret Best Waifu: I think Sugarcoat would be hilarious and productive to have around. Saying what you think isn't easy because it means you've got to be smart enough to know exactly what you think before you say it. I admire that kind of decisiveness.

Well, once I was awake I was a little more receptive to the shorts, and yes they got better in order

Dance Magic: Apart from a few hilarious lines this was mostly a run-of-the-mill thing; nothing particularly brilliant, but nothing dire either.

I did rather like the Shadowbolts in this one - particularly their honest assessment of their shortcomings in the cafe and seeing that they are at least trying to go straight, and even if they aren't too clear on how to do it yet they are at least able to admit they are going wrong and they don't want to be doing that now.

Movie Magic: A lot more fun. I didn't care much for the "Power Ponies" bit as I don't like the names being taken across like that (the "horse" naming theme makes no sense in a "human" world).

Mirror Magic: Probably the best one of the three. The Equestria scene was quite well done, and better than I expected.

(Juniper finds a magic mirror that shows her as a different human.) Wow. What magic is that?
(Sunset: “Dear Princess Twighlight!”) YES! Yes yes yes yes yes! Finally!
(“Ran out of pages in my journal.”) Oh! The magic item is out of charges! And it's a spellbook, so it's not easy to recharge either. She'll have to return to Equestria, find two new spellbooks, magically connect them, and personally deliver it to Twilight Sparkle because she doesn't trust the mailpony!
(Sunset: “I'm constantly thinking about things going wrong, even when they aren't.” Fluttershy: “Ooh, like... like what things?”) “An ancient castle is no place for a bunny. He could get hit by falling debris, or the floor could give out under him! Oh! He could be trapped in a dark place with no way out!” (a few years later) “What if we encounter something terrifying and need to get away quickly? All those layers could slow me down, or worse, make me trip!” Yeah, I can see why Fluttershy reacts so scared here. Sunset doesn't even need to fuel her fears by mentioning anything in particular. Whereas Pinkie, she might guess exactly what bad thing will happen, but isn't afraid of it.
Wait, Twilight's writing back? But wasn't the diary out of charges just a minute ago?
(“Princess Twilight wants me to come to Equestria.”) YES! FINALLY! Pity it's in an EG episode so far, and I still don't think it's likely we'll see her in the main series or the MLP feature film, but still, SUNSET SHIMMER IS CALLED TO EQUESTRIA FOR A QUEST! THIS IS WHAT WE'VE ALL BEEN WAITING FOR! … Um, sorry for screaming.
(Juniper watching herself in the mirror where she's signing photos.) Is that the Mirror of Erised?
(“I wish this popcorn would clear itself up!” Mirror magically clears up the popcorn.) Ah no, it's more like that magical portrait painting that gets older while the owner stays the same age.
Ah, the magical portal is there still (or again) in the garden of the school, together with the pedestal it's built into, it's only the horse statue on top of the pedestal that's broken. So that's how they get around that Nightmare Twilight's magic broke the statue in EG3.
Ah yes. I was wondering why Starlight Glimmer was in this episode, it seemed like an idea only a bad fanfic could have, but it makes sense now. Only Starlight Glimmer could have the impertinence to ask to go through the mirror, even if it might put both worlds in grave danger.
(Sunset to Starlight: “Just lay low. Don't draw too much attention…”) Hahaha. Sunset doesn't know Starlight Glimmer yet. Either she was busy with her own problems and didn't keep up with all the things that's happened in Equestria, or maybe this story is between E5 and E6 so she has no way to know yet.
Wow… Starlight can do not just cute puppy eyes stare, but actually puts little hearts in her eyes. She really has a large arsenal of interesting mind-control magic.

Aaaaa! The Rainbooms are sucked into the magic mirror! Halp!
And now Juniper got the green flash in her eyes. Is the mirror like that magical spellbook from S4 E23 Inspiration Manifestation, and she's learning how to use it? But then why is Starlight Glimmer here? Maybe this happens between S5 and EG4, but the writers had some foreknowledge about what they wanted to do with Starlight in S6?
… but I think they did learn one thing from S7: the animators are daring to do more crazy faces now.
(Fluttershy: “It's sort of a deep-down-inside freakout.”) Ah yes! Best character moment Fluttershy has had so far.
And now Sunset has the magic mind-reading power she's acquired in EG4, and uses it in a more essential way than just breaking down doors.
Hey look! Juniper is evolving! And she looks ugly because all the good color schemes were taken by other characters and she wanted to have a distinct look.
And she's now ten feet tall not counting the high heels and hair, and everyone is scared of her.
Oh no! So Sunset isn't the one who gets the quest to recharge her diary, instead it's Starlight Glimmer who gets a quest to repair a broken magic item. She has to go back to Equestria through the portal, so she can use her high level unicorn magic to at least conserve the mirror's state and keep Nightmare Juniper away until she figures out something.
Nice ending. I think this still seems like it was written before EG4 and modified to mention the special powers gained in EG4 later, because that chronology works well. This episode did make up for the first one: this is a story I wanted to see in the Equestria Girls series. Thank you, MLP staff.

I can't really answer that without a spoiler. Did you enjoy Equestria Girls 4? If so, maybe you'll like these too. I at least recommend you to watch all four EG movies before the specials, and to watch the three specials in order.

So why exactly did Princess Twilight write that she's urgently summoning Sunset to Equestria? Just to give her a new diary? Seems sketchy. There might be more to this we'll find out in later episodes, if they make them, or perhaps even in the main MLP series (I can dream, right?).

Anyway so villain of the second gets a mirror poisoned by magic and traps the human-Mane6 in the waiting room of my doctor's office. Meanwhile, Sunset goes... back to pony world? And she's on two legs... okay this the best short just for the scene of pony-Sunset being the most adorkable thing ever. Egads, Hasbro. I liked sunset and always thought she should be the team leader, but to see her be a silly pony here just really shoots up her status on my fav list by like, 50 points. Anyway, so Sunny gal gets strong-armed (leg?) into bringing Starlight along, but at least Glim-Glam doesn't ruin anything with weird super powers. Sunset gets captured, Rainbow power apparently fuels evil, Starlight convinces the villain to quit, the Mane6 break free, and all seems well. Done.

Overall it was fun for what it was. A bit adventurous in the second and third shorts which is what I like to see.

Okay, maybe that's a little weak. A different route to go is that there are a ton of examples of animal themed super heroic groups like Thundercats and Silverhawks. Power Ponies in the human world might have a horse-themed secret lair or something.

Our human world really loves animal-themed hero teams.

I never really got waifus. Is it just the pony you'd get along with best, or want to be friends with most? (Or have sex with the most? I don't know).

So going by the standard of which pony I'd likely be best friends with?

Rainbow Dash: High action and flight? Yeah, no problem. I'd want to go on adventures to see the Everfree or dragons, and I think Rainbow Dash would be the only pony to want to join me.

Going by what I've seen, Waifu is "fictional female you think is cute/hot and want to bone." It's supposed to be "wife" in romanji.

There's also a bit of possessiveness about it--emphasis on "My waifu" and... You know how when the first EQ trailers came out people bitched up and down abou Flash Sentry "stealing" their waifu? Yeah. The concept is really kind of creepy.

The closest thing to the waifu phenomenon I've ever experienced is the case of a pair of psychopathic little girls with tragic backstopries and a similar phenomena with a tragic individual of indeterminate gender. They are cute and tragic and I just want to hug the crazy away and find them families who will love them and won't abuse them or negelct them or make them crazy.(They're from thee differant works and none of them are ponies.)

No, it's not weak. That's a fair arguement for animal names generally. It's just that in EQG they have simply done a drag-and-drop with the names, and I find it particularly jarring and lazy.

While Crystal Prep works as a name (more or less), I don't think Canterlot High or Power Ponies work at all - it simply sounds like they are dragging the names across and forcing them in regardless. I don't think it would have killed them to come up with better - even if horse related - names.

No, it's not weak. That's a fair arguement for animal names generally. It's just that in EQG they have simply done a drag-and-drop with the names, and I find it particularly jarring and lazy.

While Crystal Prep works as a name (more or less), I don't think Canterlot High or Power Ponies work at all - it simply sounds like they are dragging the names across and forcing them in regardless. I don't think it would have killed them to come up with better - even if horse related - names.

I have no problems with the name dropping, but I can see your side about needing some more creativity to give this other world a little more individuality than "ponies with fingers"

This was at the start of the episode. At that point all we saw on the screen was one villain, one bearded director, the seven Rainbooms and Spike. It looked as if the Rainbooms were making a Daring Do movie, which is what I didn't understand. It did become clear shortly after the opening title that they aren't.

As promised a while ago, I started a DnD 5e game using this supplement. I can happily report that the book works wonderfully, at least for the group I have. So if you ever feel the urge to, I can recommend it.

However, now I am trying to learn GURPS 4e. And to that end, I have put together a little game for the playgrounders, also pony-based. If anyone's interested, here's the link.

I thought they were fun, and won't mind it if they keep making them. So long as it doesn't mean less pony, of course, but I assume there are no plans to stop producing pony episodes. I seem to recall confirmation of a season 8 not long ago.

It's interesting, however, to see how different they feel from pony episodes. They have the same 20 minute format, but it's like a completely different viewing experience somehow.

Sunset returning to Equestria, though briefly, was the highlight of the three, hooves down. Seeing her stumble around on two legs was adorably fun.

Found Juniper's about-face in the third a little too easy, but that's a common aspect of both FiM and EqG.

Clearly Best Waifu: Rainbow Dash. Yeah she's Rainbow Dash and everything that comes with that (loud, competitive, Rainbow Dash, etc, etc). But she's also the one who'd always be fun. Applejack's idea of a hot date would be washing the dishes, Fluttershy seems cute in theory but shyness is just another word for bad at conversation, Rarity - who needs the drama? Rainbow Dash's defining trait is that she's always up for anything and if you can phrase it in the form of a bet or a dare you can get her into any hobby.

Rainbow Dash is the dream girl, but I would never be able to keep up with her or keep her attention. I'd just be standing there, dreaming of her, and she'd race past without even noticing me. I wouldn't even get her attention. It'd be like a sloth trying to catch the eye of a lightning bolt. Forget about it.

Rarity ... I feel like she's not fully appreciated. I could live with her drama, I'm sure.

Of the Shadow Bolts, I have to disagree. Sunny Flare is the one for me. The lack of art made of her is a grave, grave disappointment.

That was...a mixed holiday. The caravan fridge broke the night before, in the morning when Dad had left the car out so that the buggers at social services next door don't park all over the road he discovered the door had been badly dented by some pillock (no details left, natch...) - my door, obvously - and yesterday is ceased to actually open from the inside; the dog very carefully leaned over the barrier to be sick all over my stuff (fortunately nothing electronic); the caravan loo leaked when Mum had a loo stop on the way there... And that was the first day. It's been that sort of week, right up to Mum getting home and finding Gardener's World (where we are tomorrow) had not taken her pennies for the tickets, so we shall have to get some tomorrow morning (after having - as usual - seven bells of password trouble with her bank again).

No pictures, fortunately for you, there wasn't anything especially interesting (or it was too windy for me - with all the other hiccups -0 to want to dig the ponies out).

Still... the house and ponythread are still standing when we got back, so there's that.

Been re-reading the Belgariad again ('s been ages) and it occurs to me it's probably as well Twilight doesn't here of a universe where people research things for centuries, otherwise she'd be busting down dimensional barriers before you couldn't say "be not..."

Except that it's kinda inferred that Belgarath's centuries fo research have only confrimed things we already know. (Plate tectonics proably the most scientific among them). Plus, his notes would no doubt infuriate Twilight as he doesn't strike me as someone who takes proper notes, but rather as someone who is conversational and impresice about it.

Also, do yourself a favor and skip the Malloreon. It fails to keep up with the original (and that's about as nice a thing as I have to say aobut it).

Eddings is one of my favourite authors, actually. I've read all of Edding's books more than once (the Belgariad/Malloreon and Elenium/Tamuli) several times (anbd I consider all twelve books of the former to be basically one series, which ranks with Zhan's Thrawn trilogy as my all-time favourites, only a step behind Lords of the Rings); with the sad exception of the gods quartet, which I never even got the last book of because even I was bored. The style didn't work, and he didn't even manage, towards the end, to make the enemies a credible threat. I find it such a shame that he went out on such a disappointing note.

They just released 3 episodes recently. I don't think they're doing a EG movie this year since they're busy with the other movie.

They were decent though I thought Sunset's new hair coloring looked off on her pony self.
