Re: My Little Pony XCVII: Cheerilee's Lonely Hearts Club
I happened to take my camera down to the club today (principally to take photos of Dad's set-up for the worlds so I know what not to use when I do mine), but I figured ponythread might find some interest in seeing what a normal, not convention Maneouvre Group game board typically looks like.
Spoiler
(We didn't really play much; we had less than an hour before my mate had to go by the time we were set-up asnd he wasn't that bothered about playing hard, so we fiddled a bit, but at least determined a few useful things about Hammer of Hatred verses Equus and Onager. Bit embarrasing, actually, given my inability to roll not-multiples of three (multiples of three miss against hull-down targets) and a couple of natural 20s on his part... Just goes to show that no matter how awesome your vehicle is... Technology is never a certain garentee...!)
Or, y'know, you may not. But are, at least, more informed...

Re: My Little Pony XCVII: Cheerilee's Lonely Hearts Club
Not sure how we could Pony re-enact this.
The Last Unicorn as Fluttershy
Schmendrick as Twilight Sparkle (I could use Trixie but he is more of a dork than arrogant)
Molly Grue as Rarity
Mommy Fortuna as Trixie
Prince Lir as Shining Armor
Red Bull (don't ask) as Iron Will (Maybe paint it red?)
King Haggard as Discord or King Sombra.Badly drawn helmet avatar drawn by me.

Re: My Little Pony XCVII: Cheerilee's Lonely Hearts Club
Well, I may have done wrong though, I think I should have made Princess Cadence as last unicorn instead.
I just used Twilight, based on 1st season's problems she made (Parasprites, and a magic spell on her doll).
Well, she is like Rarity, at least before she joined up with the outlaws.
I am not sure how Lir and Molly or Rarity and Shining Armor ship had to do with this.
I don't know but Mommy Fortuna has more ego and definitely cruel.Last edited by t209; 2017-09-21 at 09:51 PM.

Re: My Little Pony XCVII: Cheerilee's Lonely Hearts Club
You can play at 25mm (if you rcall, the first pass at the table Aotrs was indeed in 25/28/30/whatever (approx 1/72nd)), but it's a different sort of game because - kind of obviously - the board's absolute size doesn't change, but the ground scale goes from 1cm = 10m to 1 inch = 10m, so the board is only a quarter the effective size. 25mm tends to be better for fighting in urban areas.
MG actually started out at 25mm, but Dad experimented with smaller scales; 6mm didn't work (the terrain density required is ridiculous, and things like turning the turrets was fiddly), but 144th is basically the ideal scale. In fact, since Dad's innovation of having town and villages as templates with stands to keep the houses in place, you can actually play in 144th the same games you'd play at 25mm, but with better context. (Since at 25mm, if you move the building a couple of mil putting the models inside, it doesn't matter, but the distances are sufficiently important that you can't do that in 144th, because the proportional error is much higher.)
(Also, it must be noted, that large vehicles/models actually find it very difficult to to positioned somewhere they are not exposed to fire, which becomes more of an issue at 25mm. There are not all that many places to hide a Hammer of Hatred, sort of nessecitating a lot of forests or urban areas so they are not continuosly exposed to fire. Big is not always better. In fact, if you recall, the precise reason the Revenant Spear exists is because sometimes, you just need a tank-shaped tank (the Rev Spear is about the sort of size asa Leopard 2/Challenger 2 by the by). A lot of typical scifi stuff is actually well over-sized compared to proper tank sizes - case in point, when I did a commission for Critical Mass for a Marder and Leopard based design, actually doing it at 15mm was too small for them and I in the end used the 25mm size of those vehicles for their 15mm scale. Tanks are suprisingly a lot smaller than you think they are.
I feel I also must, in fairness however, also point out that even in the Aotrs, the Scitalis, a "bike" is bigger than your car. Whatever car you drive.)

Re: My Little Pony XCVII: Cheerilee's Lonely Hearts Club
Hmm, Cadance can be a good choice, and works with your choice of Lir.
Shmendrick has a little bit of ego to him. He's often confident to his own detriment, and he's got some con skills (pickpocketing, fast talk) that helps him put on a showmanship for the audience he's pulling one over. I think Trixie could work. :>
I don't know, I was tired and throwing stuff at the wall. I think it just left a splattered mess of an idea. Ignore that, i'll mop it up later.
I don't see Trixie as cruel. How about Chrysalis? She's cruel. Same voice actress too. ;)

Re: My Little Pony XCVII: Cheerilee's Lonely Hearts Club
Linkara just reviewed MLP comics #11 and #12 (the ones with Shining and Cadance's backstory). Well worth the watch.
(Though the review is only about the first 25 minutes, the last fifteen s storyline, which for those unfamilair could skip. But, seeing as it has an ACTUAL STARSHIP BATTLE in it, why would you?)

Re: My Little Pony XCVII: Cheerilee's Lonely Hearts Club
While I didn't care much for the story part (over acted, over long, over done - in fairness, probably deliberately) the review was interesting. I'm impressed that he can say the comic is good even though he isn't particularly interested in the subject matter.
Mind you, probably my favourite story in the comics.Warning: This posting may contain wit, wisdom, pathos, irony, satire, sarcasm and puns. And traces of nut.

Re: My Little Pony XCVII: Cheerilee's Lonely Hearts Club
Linkara's storylines are not something everyone enjoys (which is why I brought it up at all). Linkara himself is fully aware of how camp and silly they can be, but he still takes plays it straight (it is his homage to comics, really; which is why, you will note, he goes out of his way to say "review starts here" most of the time. I personally find them delightful, and literally better than most of the "Proper" Stuff On Telly1. (Indeed, it never ceases to amaze me what Linkara can manage to achieve!) That was a conclusion to an arc which has lasted a good year or two (hence the vastly atypical length - normally, I watch Linkara on a Tuesday, but all the VFX delayed this one not unreasonably), and builds on the mythos he's build up for... Quite some years, actually! So having seen the groundwork or being invested it what's going on is like coming in at the conclusion of the last episode of a new series, really. (It was also atypically long because he wants to wrap this story arc up, and move on with the next one, since for various reasons, he's felt its dragged on too much (I don't think us fans, do, mind.))
1Since I, y'know, watch Linkara every week with as much religiousness as pony (and have for longer), and at the minute I am literally watching no shows on telly.Last edited by Aotrs Commander; 2017-09-22 at 03:01 PM.

I don't think anyone's posted it here, but we now have the synopsis of the finale.

Re: My Little Pony XCVII: Cheerilee's Lonely Hearts Club
Spoiler: Shadow PlayDark.
But since we're already invoking Merlin tropes what with Starswirl being trapped ina crystal pillarlimbo for a thousand years, why not take the route Stargate SG-1 and have him exhaust his life (or what is more likely for a TvY show, his magic) giving the next generation the knowledge and/or time to do what they need to do - and to do what he and his cohort could not in their time? If the Journal of Two Sisters is to be believed (admittedly it probably isn't, given that the latest crop of writers probably hasn't read it), it wouldn't be the first time.
An aside: Matthew Walker, the actor who played Merlin on SG-1, lives in Canada, and would be more available and cheaper than, say, Ian McKellen or Patrick Stewart. I don't think he will end up voicing Starswirl, but I reserve the right to be smug about it if he does.

Re: My Little Pony XCVII: Cheerilee's Lonely Hearts Club
Spoiler: Health of Info New EpisodeThis episode was good. Worldbuilding some new places, new critters, new old pony lore... and now I laugh once more at all those pony RPGs that make alchemy a zebra only thing, for earth ponies got another leg up with being good healers (and getting the title of mage)! Mwahaha. I think Mage Meadowbrook is a cutie, and she certainly has a neat design with that mane. Runs in her family, natch.
Too bad we don't get Zecora coming along for the cure. We'll just never see her go on an adventure, will we? :(
Then again, she got so sick that she stopped rhyming, so that's pretty scary. I guess any disease that turns you into a tree is pretty serious. And with that, Fluttershy's dreams have been shattered. Yikes, that Everfree forest is lethal. With as often as the Mane6+1 go through it, you forget it's supposed to be an actual scary place. So, kudos for making it a bad place once more, show staff.
Overall a nice little adventure. Haven't seen a Twi/Flutters episode in a very long time.Last edited by DigoDragon; 2017-09-23 at 12:13 PM.

Re: My Little Pony XCVII: Cheerilee's Lonely Hearts Club
So we've got even more EQG shorts.
Spoiler: Coinky-DinkPretty catchy song. Pinkie Pie working at a 50's retro diner seems to fit. Pinkie's expoloding sprinkle powers seem more of a liability than an asset though... 7/10
Spoiler: Good VibesI really liked this one. It's always nice when Trixie gets to show her actual competence at stage magic. Now we know what all the Rainbooms do, which makes Sunset's sushi stand out a bit less (though hers is still the only one that doesn't really make sense...). Is that Sunset/Flash ship tease at the end? I hope so... 9/10

Re: My Little Pony XCVII: Cheerilee's Lonely Hearts Club
I'm watching the new episode of this weekend, S7 E20. Also, I notice there's a few new EG5 summertime shorts out as well, despite that the summer weather has ended here, but I'm postponing that to after this episode.
Spoiler: S7 E20S7 E20: A Health of Information, thoughts as I go.
- (Opening scene, Fluttershy and Zecora at a swamp.) Zecora is hanging from a tree branch with her tail. Are the blue flowers with yellow spots a new plot point for this episode, or are fans supposed to recognize them from earlier?
- (Zecora breaks out in red spots all over her body from the pollen of the blue flowers.) Wow, that's some pretty fast disease. Probably magical.
- (Doctor tells Zecora he has swamp fever, and that in the final stage of this disease, the ill person turns to the sort of tree that spreads the infection.) Swamp fever? Is that like malaria? There'll be so much fan fiction now about Fluttershy and a disease that turns you to a tree. Also, Ponyville seems to have a lot of doctors. Or is this somewhere else?
- A mystical doctor who healed ponies in the night and then disappeared? Is that Princess Luna from a thousand years ago?
- (Fluttershy goes to Twilight, they have to track down the ancient doctor or a cure.) Why is Twilight sad about a research project where she has to look through every book in the library? Or is she just concerned?
- (Fluttershy: “I figured out who the Mystical Mask is. […] Mage Meadowbrook.”) Seriously? It had to be someone who was already mentioned?
- Twilight got her hair singed from a small bolt of lightning Zecora spat, but unlike in S2 E20, it was just temporary cartoon damage that disappeared by the next scene.
- (They find mage Meadowbrook's relative in the swamp, Cattail, a pony with long yellow beard.)
- Is that the whole library or just the secret revolving bookcase hiding it?
- Oh! It's a flashback to Meadowbrook and her mentor. (Flashback is from Meadowbrook's diary Fluttershy is reading. The mentor is her mother. Meadowbrook is a young healer, there's an outbreak of swamp fever that many ponies caught, including the mother.)
- Still in flashback, Meadowbrook notices that the blue-yellow striped insects are eating the flower's pollen and aren't sick. He thinks the insects could be a cure for the disease. Seriously, what kind of logic is that?
- (Diary reveals the honey of the magical bees is indeed the cure.) That's great! Fluttershy is good with bees, we know that from S4, so she'll be able to get the honey.
- (Fluttershy caught swamp fever.) Yep, I was right, there will be fan fiction and fan art about Fluttershy as a tree.
- How exactly do those old ceremonial wooden or leather masks protect against catching the disease?
- (Bees sting Fluttershy. She falls ill for three days. Wants to get up as soon as he becomes conscious.) Don't play the Strogoff, Fluttershy. Give a little time to healing. (Twilight and bearded pony continue to try to get honey off screen.)
- (Fluttershy: “Wait, disguises!”) The bee costume from S4? (Nope: Meadowbrook's striped healer's mask turns out to be an even better bee costume.)
- The cure has visible symptoms even quicker than the infection. Definitely a magical disease.
- Oh no! Now you only have one minute remaining of the episode, Fluttershy. How will you find the disappeared doctor in such a short time?
- The lesson Fluttershy says at the end makes no sense after this story. Seriously. They should have just left out the part where she tells that lesson, the story works just fine without it.
- End credits tell the Ponyville doctor is called Dr. Horse, and is voiced by Brian Drummond, a regular voice actor for MLP: FiM who voices the demon Ahuizotl, the Doctor, Filthy Rich, Mr. Cake, Dumbbell bully pony from Cloudsdale, and more.
- I enjoyed this episode. I'm not really sure why. Probably mostly because they managed to make Fluttershy more relatable for me this time than in some previous episodes. Not that I don't love her in S2 E7, which might be my all time favorite episode, it's just that most of the time does things that don't interest me too much.
- I hope they got more food by the way, rather than subsisting on those few cauliflower bits for three days.
Finally other people are watching them too. It was so lonely the last time I watched them because barely anyone mentioned them in the thread. Although I do admit they're pretty short and often uninteresting, so there's not much to post about, but still. Thank you. I'll watch them soon.Last edited by b_jonas; 2017-09-23 at 03:03 PM.

Re: My Little Pony XCVII: Cheerilee's Lonely Hearts Club
Spoiler: Health of InformationMore Zecora! What mischief will she cause this time?
Looks a bit like poison joke. Maybe related.
Heh ... heart rhythm.
Isn't Zecora normally the expert on rare plants and swamp diseases? Why did they need to go through Dr. Muffin Mane to learn what the disease was?
Well, that's a grim fate.
Ooh, Hayseed Swamp! I've been dying to see that place. Even though it's only for a brief adventure, this is awesome! I knew I picked it for my stories for a reason, now I only wish I could go back and incorporate Mage Meadowbrook in them somehow.
Uh yes, Twilight. Because, you know, Zecora might not have long to go? She sure is acting very calm throughout all of this
"Anypony who lives in a tree is okay by me." *cries for the old library*
I bet Twilight could zap up there and zap right back before the bees even noticed anything. Unicorn.
... but apparently calming the bees was all she could think of doing with her magic.
*
Not really sure what point there was in going through the doctor, or why Twilight had to come along (requiring bending over backwards to explain why she didn't just Magic™ the problem of the bees away). They could have probably skipped the doctor and had Fluttershy rush off alone, and it would have given them maybe 5 more minutes in the swamp.
That said, I really liked this one! I've been so looking forward to seeing the Hayseed Swamps - even if I know they won't be visiting any place called Dappleshore - and I loved everything about Mage Meadowbrook.

Re: My Little Pony XCVII: Cheerilee's Lonely Hearts Club
Spoiler: S7 E20Hey Deadly! I'm glad you liked the episode too.
I thought for a second the doctor would apologize and go to the neighboring room to ask the noisy patient to turn off his radio, then listen for the heart sounds again.
I don't think Twilight would be fast enough for that. The bees would notice.
I think the doctor was a good idea because it's both realistic and is a good advice to give to the viewers. If you're seriously ill with a strange disease, you go to a doctor for help, rather than try to find a cure yourself. And Twilight knows this.
On the EG5 summertime shorts.
Yeah, it is hard to find information about them. I tried to put a list of the shorts in a previous post when I last watch them, plus there's a list on the Wikia. When I watch the new ones, I'll try to make another list. But as for how to find them, I'm not allowed to spread them in public, because they're only aired in TV, not distributed freely on Hasbro's youtube channel this time.
Update:
So, the new EG5 summer shorts. First, let me continue the EG5 list from my previous post about Summer Shorts, because this information can be hard to find.
Spoiler: EG5 list with spoilers for episodes and older shortsThree full-time (half-hour minus ads) episodes.
- EG5 E1 Dance magic (The Rainbooms and the Friendship Games team from Crystal Prep try to win a prize for best music video)
- EG5 E2 Movie magic (Someone sabotages the production of the Daring Do movie)
- EG5 E3 Mirror magic
At least sixteen Summertime Shorts so far, there may still be more coming and I don't know how many. Variable length, from two to seven minutes. I don't know the official order so these numbers might be wrong. Q12 and Q14 have their numbers swapped on the wikia, but since Q12..Q14 were released on the same day, I won't swap them for now unless I'm sure that's the official order.
- EG5 Q1 Make up shake up (Rarity does make up on Applejack's face)
- EG5 Q2 A photo booth story (Photo Finish takes photos of Rarity with wings)
- EG5 Q3 Raise this roof (Applejack, Rainbow Dash, Scootaloo and Apple Bloom do some dancing)
- EG5 Q4 Steps of pep (Pinkie Pie teaches Fluttershy to cheer)
- EG5 Q5 Mad twience (Musical short, Twilight creates a robotic dog companion for Spike)

Now I'll watch the two new shorts, apparently released yesterday (on 2017-09-22).
Spoiler: EG5 Q15..Q16EG5 Q15 Coinky-dink world. “Coinky-dink” isn't a typo, it's actually what appears on the title screen. My big dictionary doesn't know what that is, but it turns out it's some neologism. (Musical short.) Hi, Bon Bon. Is that the old pony from S2 E17? (Pinkie Pie works as a waiter in Sugarcube Corner, where she and other waiters are on roller skates. I'd say serving with roller skates is a recipe for a disaster, but in Pinkie Pie's case I'm not sure it matters. Pinkie Pie decides to try to play match-maker, shipping the two people from the title screen: the cute girl with curly red hair, green eyes, glasses, with green blouse; and the boy with rabbit-style big front teeth, blue skin, green hair, green eyes, what looks like an MLP-style attempt of wired glass frame, wearing a shirt and jacket; who just bumped into each other while reading books, then sat at neighboring tables.) Typical Pinkie style attempts. Ah, they were reading the same book, a book with some stereotypical mad science professor on the cover. Do we know these one or both of these two people from previous episodes, possibly in pony form? (Looks it up.) The fans say they've appeared as Crystal Prep students, but not in any significant role.
EG5 Q16 Good vibes. (Another musical episode. Flash sentry throws a coin into a fountain. The Great and Powerful Trixie carried an overfilled box of stuff. (The Crusaders carry a canoe, they carelessly knock off a large pile of boxes Rainbow Dash is biulding. Rarity uses his magic from EG5 to keep the pile from collapsing.) Oh come on, do they have to use those magical powers from EG5 again? Anyway, that pile is way too large, it will collapse again soon. (The boxes turn out to contain sneaker shoes.) Hey look, japanese style dessert food! I don't like that, but it's nice to show them in an episode anyway. (Sunset Shimmer gives a box of it to Flash Sentry. Short ends with an E4 style pale rainbow flash.) This short was strange because multiple characters looked different from what they used to, in particular, Rainbow wore unusual clothes. I guess that's a good thing though, they're recognizable enough now that they no longer have to be stuck in one characteristic set of clothes.
Update:
Spoiler: EG5 Q15It's supposed to be a 50s style retro diner? I wasn't sure if it's Sugarcube Corner or some other food serving place, but I wouldn't have recognized that.
(Note: last spoiler-box previously said Q16, but it's actually a spoiler for Q15.)Last edited by b_jonas; 2017-09-24 at 07:18 AM.
