Within seconds, the ground before Phaendar Bridge erupts with the sound and fury of blade and fang. Ghalliz is the first to fall, his already wounded body no match for a surprise missile in the back from Narek. The second Ironfang soldier closes in, swinging for Mortimer this time even as Rask tries to carve him up with his greatsword and Armina throws her own punch. All of the attacks miss, as the hobgoblin steps ably out of the magically slicked terrain and continues to be a threat. Up close, you can see that he has three lip piercings, one of which oozes pus from being improperly set. In the background, you're vaguely aware of your allies loosing shafts towards the hobgoblins on the bridge, to a roughly equal effect to your various efforts. The stonework serves as cover for your more entrenched enemies, just as the shed and scrub do for your side. Only Kining is able to hit anything, her axe cutting off Piercings' ear and a good portion of his cheek.

There are others whose successes are more significant, however. Eyena steps up behind the hulking wolf Kur, her edge raised. Magic courses through the spellsword, drawing her arm further back than was possible before. She brings Blütenstaub down on Kur, splitting the beast's back open with one swing. He gives out a yelp of pain, followed by a soft rattle as he collapses. But in her haste to eliminate a threat, Eyena forgot a crucial lesson on the battlefield: never turn your back on an enemy. Seeing the development unfold in front of her, Kergri issues new orders to her own archers, and both arrows find their mark right in Eyena's back. The warrior stays conscious, but it's a close thing. To make matters worse, Kergri herself emulates Rask and throws her ranged weapon aside in favour of something a bit more intimate. By the time her crossbow has finished clattering on the flagstone, the heavy trooper has drawn a sword at least as long as Blütenstaub, which glitters silver in the last lingering rays of twilight. She raises it in a salute, closing nearly half of the distance between you.

Another mostly uneventful round, with a few exceptions (well done on killing an Advanced Wolf in one hit). The only member of your team to take any damage this round was Eyena, but unfortunately she took 10 from those arrows, putting her at 0 hp and making her disabled until she receives some healing. If nobody else does it, Aubrin will provide said healing on my next update. Pretty much everyone who had an attack roll either missed or eschewed an attack in favour of a buff / preparation.

Eyena grits her teeth as the arrows hit her, but remains surprisingly quiet, staring down at the fallen beast before heading forwards, going past the fallen beast and managing almost halfway before the constant shudders and half-limping becomes too obvious. Rask's sword comes down to obliterate yet another Ironfang lackey, this time taking advantage of the opening and blood already drawn by Kining. His swing leaves the hobgoblin prone, bleeding, and very unconscious. It also leaves your immediate vicinity free of hostile combatants for the time being, but that doesn't stop the enemy further afield from pincushioning the half-orc with two more of their arrows. Taking advantage of the breathing room, Lirosa, Taidel, and Jet all shoot off some arrows of their own, although the bulwark of the roosts provide too much cover. Then - just a few steps away - Narek shows them how it's done by firing off another charge from the ever-useful wand he picked up at the Taproot. The wand's payload curves gracefully around the bridge's stonework to hit its target.

While the rest of you prepare your spells and defenses, Aubrin steps up to Eyena, blinking a few tears of reflex out of her bad eye and leaning over on her staff to completely rejuvenate the other woman. "My divine connection to the Drunk isn't some band-aid, you know," she says with a slightly playful tone. "In all seriousness, be careful. That was the last of my more powerful spells. From here on out, any healing you get from me right now is going to have to be in potion form, or else we risk patching up our enemies."

The enemies so far have been easily dispatched, despite their number. You suspect that when you lock blades with Kergri, that fact will be tested. The armored soldier continues to march inexprably forward, staring you down the whole time. She clearly considers Mort and Armina, but elects to not charge recklessly down the centre of your line. Instead, Kergri clanks southward, stopping just on your side of the bridge where the stone meets the earth. The time for her giving orders is done, and by the grin playing around her mouth, she is greatly looking forward to meeting her match on the battlefield. She is closing in on Gilraen now, her huge sword in relative proximity to the woodland elf, and she seems to be appraising his defenses for a calculated strike. But then why does she keep glancing at Eyena?

You guys continuing to kill basic Ironfang soldiers is very good for this combat! You've effectively dealt with the entire first wave of offense, and all it really cost you was some healing magic and a few rounds. While time is not on your side here, you definitely have made the most of it so far. Rask was the only one to take damage on your team this turn, eating 7 from the archers. The rest of it was more movement.

Eyena nods, looking down at her feet as if she'd been admonished for tracking mud over the freshly polished wood floors. "I'll try. Um, my thanks for your assistance are...deeply...er...gratitude," Eyena frowns, and eventually looks back towards the fighting after it's clear the ruin of a sentence is never going to be properly finished. Staring at Kergri, she narrows her eyes, then draws herself up to her full height, shifting Blütenstaub into her right hand and stretching the fingers of her left for a moment.

"ćʊ̈đ!" Eyena says, louder by far than anything she's been heard saying before, and with force behind it she didn't muster even for the threat against the hobgoblin soldier back in the Taproot. The forces arrayed against you have diminished, and yet they prove their potency now all the same. Eyena's spell elicits a look of disgust from Kergri, and she seems about to move in to put an end to the threat of the hated elf-magic. But Rask's addition to the line seems to give the trooper pause. She recognizes the combined threat that Blütenstaub and the half-orc's greatsword present - but she bares her teeth and gets ready to charge into the fray regardless. Narek's spell doesn't rattle her, as she grasps her bastard sword tighter, and she nonchalantly catches both of Gilraen's arrows on her shield. Seeing an opening, she is only seconds away from abandoning her position and moving forward.

It is at that moment, however, that Mortimer makes the near fatal error of being the first to move in. Without breaking eye contact with Eyena, her sword is extended to catch the woodsman right in the stomach, tearing through magical and mundane protection alike to leave him gaping and unconscious on the ground. Her blade was ready for the magus, but she seems just fine with gutting Mort instead. Then as she looks around, Kergri spots a new target. She steps over the spiritualist and moves for Kining, who has started to advance towards the archers. The smith, seeing her approach, cries out in defiance: "Come on then, you fu-" but the dwarf doesn't get to finish her sentence, as a swing puts her down as well.

"Well then?", the armored hobgoblin says in heavily accented common as she stands over the two bodies. Behind her, the two remaining Ironfang soldiers throw their bows aside for swords of their own and come rushing down the bridge to take up arms beside their commander. No doubt they were inspired by her example. One of them - already wounded by Narek - takes another arrow fired by Taidel. "I was hoping to face a real warrior today," Kergri calls to Eyena and Rask."Would one of you oblige me?"

    Spoiler: Round 4 OOC
    Show
    Updated Map

Well, things are hitting the fan now. Mortimer triggered Kergri's readied attack - a (thankfully unconfirmed) critical threat for 11 damage, putting him at -7 and unconscious. She withstood the grease spell and none of Gilraen's attacks landed, allowing her to move up and hit Kining for 14 damage on her turn, knocking her out as well. And the other hobgoblins moved up and are getting ready for some attacks of their own next turn.

On your allies' side of the equation, only Taidel landed a hit, but Aubrin came to cure Rask back up to full (healed him for 10), since she can't get to Mortimer or Kining this turn with her 20 ft move. She'll heal Mortimer on her next turn, prioritizing him over the dwarf.

Eyena frowns, but says nothing in response to Kergri's taunt. Which isn't surprising, really, given her track record of speech so far. Instead, she heads towards the hobgoblin closer to her, holding her left arm up in at an odd angle that seems at least a foot for two away from touching anything, and attacks.

Rask stood still while the healing magic went through him, letting out a steady wheeze of breath as his arrow wounds stopped bleeding. His head whipped towards the hob in armour as she spoke out a challenge. Never made much sense to him how people could talk and fight at the same time. He certainly never could.

The big half-horc moved towards the hob before slashing down at her legs. She seemed a mite top heavy, with all that armour on.

Narek stared for a moment as three companions fell in a flurry of blows. What had possessed them to rush forward into the waiting blade of a season d warrior?

The situation was taking a turn - perhaps he could help clear the field. Raising his second wand, Narek launched another force bolt towards the wounded archer ... then he moved to cover.

With the last of the hobgoblin soldiers advancing, the ground near the bridge quickly becomes a mess of blood and broken bodies. The soldier closer to Eyena evades her clumsy swing with ease, but is not prepared for what follows: Gilraen's first arrow finds its mark beneath his arm, and another spell from Narek tears a miniature hole through his chest. Having suffered through one too many wounds, he promptly falls forward to join his brothers and sisters in oblivion. The remaining Ironfang recruit sees a chance to succeed where his comrade has failed, and without any prompting from his superior circles to the south to engage Eyena, dodging no less than three projectiles on his way there. "<For Ghalliz!>" he shouts as his longsword catches the woman across the midsection, drawing a not-insignificant amount of blood. He bares a wolf-like grin at the prospect of putting down a significant threat to the Legion.

Meanwhile, Rask has a chance to test his weapon against a worthy opponent. Kergri is wide open, her sword guard not up to skewer him like she did to Mortimer. But, moving in and swinging his blade against such a heavily armored target does him no good right away. As it turns out, putting all of one's strength into a blow to maximize its impact has an inverse relationship with the accuracy of said blow. Kergri exhales as she allows Rask to overextend and then strikes back, missing the half-orc's neck by a hair. His luck could very well run out the next time he tries such a maneuver. Then again, luck is a fickle thing. Behind him, he hears Aubrin step in close. "This is it," she murmurs, "the last of my magic. I can't heal anyone with that brute in the way. You're favored by the gods, so maybe all you need is a little bit more."

Well, this is still progress! Rask and Kergri both missed each other (funny story: I thought I rolled a confirmed crit but it turns out I had already rolled for her and forgotten about it). The other hobgoblin was downed, but the last whole one hit Eyena for 7 damage this turn. Oh, and Aubrin cast divine favor on Rask (which will combo very nicely with Fate's Favored).

Other than that, not a lot to report - but you guys are at the halfway mark before enemy reinforcements might be arriving (!!), and the person best equipped to blow this bridge is unconscious.

Eyena grits her teeth as another hobgoblin approaches, her eyes going over to their commander. With a flourish of her weapon that's just a moment's effort away from an actual attack, she pulls back, using the length of Blütenstaub to keep the hobgoblin from being able to retaliate immediately, and moves around behind the line, softly-glowing hand held high. Her gaze remains firmly on Kergri.

It hadn't been the first time someone had told him that. He'd always been oddly lucky, and maybe that was why he'd survived all these years. He certainly didn't feel lucky right now, just angry. Trying his best to keep the anger down, Rask swung at the hobs legs again, putting as much, if not more force into the blow than before.

    Mort & Armina.
Level 1 Spiritualist and Phantom of Dedication
    HP -12/9 | AC: --| Attack: -- | Status:Dead

As Kergri's blade pierced his chest, Mortimer knew it was the end. Clutching the wound, he let out a last, final death-rattle before falling to the ground, heedless of the battle around him. As the light in his soul went out forever, and everything went black, he had one final thought.

    Armina...

    Armina...

    ***

    Armina...

    "Here I am, little brother."

Mortimer opened his eyes. He sat in a stream, the water warm around him, and yet, almost imperceptible in its presence - as if it were more of the idea of water rather than water itself. Looking up above, he saw a great void, resplendent with a million stars, the stream stretching through the void infinitely into the horizon beyond. And next to him, almost exactly the way he remembered her - Armina. His twin sister.

Choking back a sob, Mortimer embraced her, and was greeted likewise in return. Several minutes later, they broke apart, and with a smirk Armina ruffled his tangled and messy black hair. Mortimer chuckled nervously.

"I, uh... I never really did care much about taking care of myself after, well, you know. Even if you did come back to me in a partial form."

"Mom would have yelled at you for that, you know."

Mortimer sighed folornly. "She would have." He looked out into the starry expanse. "I crossed over, didn't I?"

"Yeah. In retrospect, it probably would have been best to hang back."

"I know, I just... I thought I might get lucky. Get a good hit in before she could take down any of the others, you know."
Mortimer took on a worried look. "I hope they'll be alright."

"They seemed like a tough group. I'm sure they'll handle themselves just fine."

Mortimer looked to Armina. "Do you... do you think we'll see Mom again, too?"

Just then, the two of them felt ground beneath their feet. Wrapped up in each other's presence, neither had noticed as they had finished their journey down the river of souls. Standing up upon its shore, brother and sister found themselves in a large, empty yard of bones. In the middle, atop a large dais, was an enormous throne; upon it sat a garundi women with ashen skin, eyes and hair the color of snow, and a height of titanic proportions. She was dressed in a dark, hooded dress, and in her left hand, she bore an hourglass with red sand, slowly trickling down.

The woman looked at them. It was a look that could pierce the soul.

Arminia looked to Mortimer. "Only one way to find out."

The bodies lay strewn across the battlefield. The mighty Rager ... the Noble Archer ... the silent Spellsword ... and the twin Departed ...only he remained. The mission remained and he was the only one left. Raising his hands, they glowed with power. Snarling, he rushed forward...

With a grimace, Gilraen watches the killing field earn its name. His eyes scan rapidly, the tip of his arrow trained on the obvious leader. Hoping against hope for a decent shot, he waits for the right moment. Without warning, Eyena disengages from her opponent, and Gilraen pivots his left foot forward. The tide of the battle on the bridge seems to be turning ever more against you, as Mortimer breathes his last. Kergri continues to stand tall, clearly unhurt despite Rask's continued attempts to cut her down. She seems about to gore the half-orc this time, only to lose her footing on the ground when Narek looses yet another of his spells. The hobgoblin warrior tumbles to the bloody dirt with a massive crash, shooting the mage a death glare as she rises painstakingly to her feet. Rask's sword is still not enough to hit Kergri when she's off-balance, as she catches the edge of the greatsword on her shield. "I thought the orcs of Belkzen were supposed to be tough? Is that the best you can do?" She grins up at her enemy, punctuating the last words with a slice to Rask's chest that cuts deep, nearly sending him down for the second time today.

On the other side of the melee, Gilraen's arrows both embed themselves harmlessly in the hobgoblin soldier's armor. He locks eyes with the archer, and seeing that Eyena has retreated out of his range, opts for a charge. Before the elf can redraw his bow, the Ironfang is on him, cutting him from shoulder to hip with his longsword. And yet, in his recklessness the hobgoblin might have just opened himself up to a deadly counterattack. If Gilraen can take advantage of it, you may be down to one final opponent. Fortunately, Narek's former partner seems to be making good on his tactical suggestion, gathering most of the townsfolk together on the far side of the shed to the north-west in preparation for a guided sortie over the bridge in a few moments. Jet is in the midst of helping organize, only to step forward towards Kergri, sword in hand. "This is for everyone you've killed today, you bitch," the innkeeper invokes as she ably slides the blade between the trooper's pauldrons and into her shoulder, drawing first blood.

Well... things aren't exactly looking up for you guys. Kergri failed her initial save against grease, but she got back up and Rask missed on his AoO against her. She ended up hitting him for 12 damage this turn after getting back up. Meanwhile, Gilraen just took 7 damage to the face from the last regular hob soldier, although he did it on a charge so hopefully that -2 to AC will be worth something. The rest of the townsfolk are mobilizing to move, not a lot to report there.

On the other hand, this marks the first attack to land on Kergri... and it came from an NPC! Jet hit her for 7 damage this turn (almost a confirmed critical).

Eyena moves in Jet's shadow as the woman approaches, slipping past to come around behind Kergri shortly after the woman attacks. She frowns at her, then nods, almost to herself. "Die," she says, bringing her hand against the hobgoblin's armor, the light within it flaring up suddenly. "...in Hell," she adds, as a surge of cold shoots out from the point of contact, first as frost that quickly fades, a mere sign of the piercing cold shooting deeper into Kergri's body. But then, the triangular light reappears, flashing behind Eyena's hand as she moves it away, heralding the immediately following eruption of ice. Like tendrils of some sort of unearthly plant, it spreads across the hobgoblin's armor, brittle and glowing as it grows in an instant, wrapping around joints and tightening its icy, if brief, grip.
