"It might seem ruthless to some of your sensibilities, but silencing them would ensure that no alarm is raised. If anyone has any more questions for them, they should ask them before we do the deed. Intellectually, I have no more queries for them, although their details on Nualia's allies remain scarce."

Vintr glanced at the others, then shook his head. Yen's face remains dark as the discussion meanders into its inevitable conclusion.

<You've both proven useful. I am grateful, because I cannot let such useful tools go to waste. You will remain here. Bound. Attempt to escape, and I will find you. You will not enjoy your end> shadows begin move around her hands. They react to her movements by dancing along her arms. <You cannot hide from me. For the shadows themselves obey my commands.

The shadows reach out and caress both goblin women. <Remain behind, and we shall see that you are taken care of. Deal?>

Both Goblins stammer to silence. One nods vigorously at Yen's commands, while the other simple shudders- stunned into silence. In response to a pointed expression, the first Goblin nudges the second, jarring her and eliciting a high-pitched yelp and <yes, yes, of course!> from her oversized, toothy mouth.

Neither woman struggles in the slightest as they are bound, nor shoes any particular sign of concern for Bruthazmus' well being.

The investigator just sighs to himself as Yen decides to make the decision for the rest of the group. Vintr no doubt agrees with her course. Nevertheless, it's a pointless risk. But if there's anything that Cade has learned since joining in this venture, it's that people tend to get angry when one ignores their counsel, no matter how obviously practical it is. It isn't like he was suggesting he kill them immediately, or even in a painful way. It certainly would have been quicker justice than they likely deserved, given how many of their children are either more bloodthirsty tribe members or are warriors-in-waiting.

"Very well, onto more interesting things. I have no stake in these spoils, so shall we see if our unconscious friend here has anything more to say? Ely, you take his feet, Vintr his head and shoulders. It might be more prudent to interrogate him upstairs and away from harm, wouldn't you say?"

"Agreed," says Niccomo, as he double checks the goblins bonds'. "We may want to march those two upstairs, in case someone decides to patrol these corridors." Niccomo scratches his head. "We can put them in the tribe leader's room, and lock them in."

Niccomo motions for the goblin women to stand up, gagged and with their hands bound behind their back, and escorts them to Ripnugget's room. If he arrives there unharmed, he binds their feet and leaves them there, behind a blocked door.

With little more discussion, and even less meaningful obstruction from the frightened Goblin women, the party wrangles both women and Bruthazmus to the late Ripnugget's throne room.

Therein, they secure the female prisoners to one of the support columns to await their attention later. Bruthazmus is a bigger problem, literally, as it takes both Elicaryn and Niccomo's attention just to muscle the brute into the room. Still, once the other two are dealt with for the moment, and Cade assists, it becomes a fairly minor task to bind and gag the Bugbear (who's arms remain manacled behind his back).

At Niccomo's insistence, the curative wand is produced and a single charge is applied to the unconscious brute. Immediately, he begins to stir. As soon as his eyes open, he begins thrashing violently, lunging towards anyone who comes close. It seems he might continue for quite some time until Vintr attempts to subdue him. The brute lunges even more viciously, and with a distinctly unpleasant pop, one of his shoulders becomes dislocated, the strain produced by the manacles too much for his joints to bear.

Gagged, his cry of agony is muffled, but no less obvious for it. In shock, he lies on the floor, still for the first time since coming to....

With the stage set to interrogate the bugbear, Vintr waited for him to wake up. When it did, however, even the monk was surprised by the vehemence their prisoner displayed. He stepped in, to try and calm the thrashing, but stopped short as a loud pop signaled a self-inflicted injury.

Pausing, Vintr stepped back, letting the others gather around. "I think my assistance in any questioning will be ... counterproductive. I shall leave it to the professionals. Given his crimes against the town, deal with him as you must. But Shelalu might be interested in seeing this one again. "

    The retired knight

Niccomo nods to Vintr. He then goes to kneel next to the bugbear, dagger in hand. "Hey buddy. No sense trashing around like this. We just went through all the steps to patch you up." Niccomo shakes his head.

"Don't know why really, but I'm pretty sure you understand varisian, so let me make things clear. See those dead goblins around us? That's our work. See Ripnugget over there? Our work too. Tsuto and his guys? Us. That goblin with the big cat? Did him too. But we didn't kill every one of them. Those we caught and that helped us, they're still well and alive. My elf friend over there, he's the one thinks we should just slit your throat and throw your corpse in the sea. Me, I'm a tired old man and I have a softer heart. So there's another way this can go. It's up to you really. Way I see things, you tell us what you know about Nualia and her guards, and I may still convince my friends you're worth something. We leave you here, go get the job done, and when we're back, we fix that shoulder and let you go to fight another day. It's up to you, really."

"I'm going to remove this gag now. Whether you talk or scream is up to you, but I can tell you screaming's not really worth it: Everyone's dead on this floor."

So, I'm not certain if this is Diplomacy or Intimidate. I see it as Diplomacy, since in the end I'm trying to appeal to his self-interest and offer him his life in exchange for cooperation. But I could understand the DM seeing this as coercion, since there's a clear threat here. Anyway, Niccomo's Diplomacy and Intimidate modifiers are the same.

Assists on that roll are more than welcome.

Understanding Niccomo's ploy the minute that the old man opens his mouth, Cade steps forward from where he was leaning on one of the throne room pillars. Of the group, Ely and Yen are the most likely to be frightening when the situation requires it, but the half-elf does not have a ruthless bone in her body. A little prodding is therefore necessary.

"<Listen to me, Elicaryn. Nualia, if left unchecked, will be the doom of Sandpoint. Any actionable intelligence we can gain from this Bruthazmus fellow is therefore of paramount importance. I trust the witch as much as any of you, but I know you are capable of cultivating the response we need as well.>" The investigator communicates in Elven, as it's far less likely the bugbear will understand. Nevertheless, he makes sure to pull Ely slightly aside and speaks a little above a whisper. One can never be too careful. "<I have seen how formidable you can be. All you need to do is show our captive the same qualities.>"

"<Formidable?>" It wasn't a word she would use to describe herself. Then again, maybe the investigator had a perspective that she lacked. He was a better judge of character than most, certainly than she was.

And it wasn't as if this was completely new. Niccomo had asked her to play ruthless before, when they captured Tsuto. Taking the 'bad cop' role to counter-balance him was probably natural, especially since the knight had insinuated Vintr wanted to kill him outright. If the monk was removing himself from the situation, the half-elf playing the 'kill him and be done with it' role made the most sense.

It shouldn't even have been hard. Paladins had a reputation for smiting evil, after all. Just act like a normal Paladin. Like the dispenser of justice she was supposed to be.

"Ser. We are wasting our time." Her voice was a little muffled behind the scarf. Maybe that would make it sound a little more intimidating, act a bite that didn't shine in her eyes. "We should-"

'Just kill him and move on.' That as what she wanted to say and what she should have said. That would be the thing to get a response out of him, to prove Niccomo's words.
'I don't want to say that.'
It felt wrong, in a way she couldn't explain. She had tried playing the 'bad cop' role before, and had proved abysmal at it. And...

And the icon she wore, the symbol of Shelyn. It felt heavy.

    She sighed, lowering the scarf.
"[color=green]... not everyone here is dead,[color]" she said instead.

"[color=green]Your... companions. Females. The women. They're a little worse for wear-"'Though I'm not sure if that was us or you'"- but they're alive, and unharmed. Like the ser said, anyone who helps us is a friend, and there is nothing I value more than that. Can Nualia say the same? How many goblins has she sent to do her work for her, to die for her? And how many of her own men?

"Answer our questions. I'll fix that shoulder myself, and you and your companions can go back to your... you can find ways to keep yourselves distracted."

As Niccomo removes the gag, the Bugbear suddenly lunges once more. With an audible clack, his teeth snap shut, just missing the cavalier's fingers. With a snarl, the Bugbear spits, catching Niccomo's armored feet with the bulk of a phlegmy glob. "F*** you, and f*** your 'work'!" he growls, heavily emphasizing the last word with sarcasm. "I'll not tell you or your point-ears a damned thing!" Still baring his teeth, Bruthazmus returns to a sullen silence, clearly uninterested in being helpful.

Niccomo stands and takes a couple steps towards Yen, "a believer, you say." He winces, as if in mild repulsion. He walks back to the bugbear, gaze empty. He stops in front of an enraged Bruthazmus, holding his dagger with a shaking hand. He looks at the blade. "That won't do." He sheathes the weapon.

Niccomo walks past the bugbear. He draws his longsword and aims for the bugbear's neck, hacking as many times as necessary.

His work done, he turns towards the closest goblin female and walks to her with slow and deliberate steps, with the same empty gaze and a blade wet with fresh blood.

Cade watches the display of violence without blinking. The bugbear was given every opportunity to submit to our questions; he knew what we were capable of. No amount of diplomatic overtures or scare tactics was going to persuade Bruthazmus to give anything up. That Niccomo has to execute him here is necessary - there's no telling whether or not he would have broken his bonds and come after them.

"Well then," he speaks in the wake of the bloodshed with no trace of emotion. "I suppose we had better move on. At the very least, we know where Nualia is likely to be hiding. Vintr, will you take point once more?"

The only thing surprising about Bruthazmus' reaction was the violence of it, and even that surprise was probably borne more from optimism than anything else.

It still hurt, though. Probably not as much as the teeth did Niccomo, but just as biting in it's own way. The way the goblins had crowded one another maybe spoke more to lust than love, but still...

It was different, watching someone being executed. A battlefield moved quickly, even if it sometimes didn't feel like it. You didn't have time to really think about tearing skin, about drawing blood, about hacking and tearing.
This felt like it was happening slower. She made herself watch it, wide-eyed and unhappy... though her feelings were probably little consolation to the goblins.

'I've been taking the easy way.' Ely had tried being cheerful and happy, friendly and open-minded at the festival. That had died in the shadows of the glassworks. Then she'd tried just going along with the others. She'd let Niccomo and Caedus call the shots, went where they said and did what they said to do. At some point, she'd stopped viewing the goblins as a people in themselves.
Both approaches were naive, dishonest, and entirely unworthy of her office. Cornering the goblins in the middle of the act had been a shock to the senses, in more ways than one.

By the time Niccomo had finished working on the bugbear, Ely's shoulders were shaking and her expression was steeled... but she hadn't looked away. That, at least, was an improvement on how they had treated past captures...

"I'm sorry." She said it softly, not sure if she was talking to the corpse, the women, her goddess, or herself. For this, the past, the future, or simply for something to say in the awkward void following the execution.

Niccomo advanced towards one of the women.

"...Ser?" Elicaryn blinked, confused at the man's actions, his walk, his expression. As blood dripped from the bloody blade, things snapped into focus.
"Wait. Wait. Ser?" She hurried after the knight, frowning. "What are you-" No need to finish that sentence, it was blindingly obvious what he was intending to do.

    "Ser. You can't. You..."
Why couldn't he though? Caedus was making no move to stop him, and the witch was hardly like to. Ely didnt have to stop him either. She didn't with Bruthazmas. But...

"S...Ni-Niccomo. Stop." The stutter probably ruined the effect she was going for. She hoped the squeeze of her hand on his shoulder made up for it.

Feel free to describe the manner in which you leave the Goblin women. Or not, if you just stalk away. At any rate, one room of the Thistletop dungeon is now vacant.

IIRC, you already looted him, so not going to double-post that ;-P

"Maybe I should be more clear next time..." Yen somewhat mumbles to herself. She follows Niccomo out of the room, her skirts rustle against the blood stained floor.

The diminutive witch stops next to Ely. "You'll have to do better than that if you are going to try to stop him from killing things." She looks up at the Paladin. Her dark eyes peer deep into the pits of Ely's. "I almost wonder if deep down you truly wanted to."

The witch shrugs before moving on.

Back at the stairs, Vintr turned to the others. He whispered, "Do we search the extra rooms, seek out the 'longshanks' or press towards Nualia? "

"Nualia," she answered, in the same quiet tone. "We arne't excavating ruins, or clearing out enemies, we're here to stop her. So if we know where she is, we should go straight there."

"Besides... we've killed a lot of goblins so far. Including one of her leaders. Someone will notice that sooner or later, and I'd rather avoid getting into unnecessary fights..."

"Agreed. Let's go for the head of the snake," Niccomo concurs. Yet, his voice lacks his usual assertivness regarding military matters; a subtle tremble betrays some sort of weariness.

Cade nods to Niccomo's suggestion wordlessly, sparing a seemingly vacant stare at the women as they leave. "Onwards, then. 'To death or glory', to quote Calixtus. His aphorisms on action were always my favorites."

Vintr shrugged his shoulders. "As you wish. To date, we have been reluctant to leave potential enemies behind us. I agree that slaying Nualia is our goal, but having our line of retreat cut off by her allies would be ... unfortunate."

Vintr was ready to proceed if the group still agreed, but felt it necessary to at least acknowledge the dangers of the situation.

Their destination decided, the party tries the northern door. Vintr is relieved to find that nothing's changed in the intervening minutes; the hallway remains vacant and quiet. He creeps northwards, to a cross-ways intersection.

Two large stone double-doors sit in the western wall, their surfaces carved with images of horrific, deformed monsters clawing their way free from pregnant woman. All variety of races are represented, though perhaps the most unnerving image is the grossly distended belly of a Halfling woman giving birth to what appears to be a minotaur with tentacles where it's mouth should be.

A short hallway leads to a nondescript door to the north, while a longer hallway opens eastward. It doesn't take long to realize that the eastward hallway must lead back to the open ocean Cade has already explored somewhat. Faint echoes of wind and waves seep through the door.

Vintr slipped back to share what he had found. "One would presume the ornate doors might lead us to Nualia. But I could not have foreseen where we would find the bugbear. Or what he'd be doing."

    An old soldier
