Re: Bink's Rise of the Runelords 2: Delving Thistletop and beyond!
Of all the things that could have been said by an aging veteran to the estranged priestess of a monstrous god, she was not expecting his casual quip, A moment of doubt and hesitation crosses her face. Does this man know her? Who is he to speak thusly? Not even the faintest hint of recognition lights in her eyes before the cavalier has taken advantage of her momentary disorientation. With a sound almost more like a squeak than a yelp, he drags her forward, into the yawning mouth of the pit.
Niccomo drops his pole arm, bearing only a casual glance over his shoulder to confirm the proximity of the slavering beast. As he dashes away, he feels the teeth *clack*, a fraction of an inch from the back of his neck. Eyes on the wizard behind, he plants his right foot to leap the pit...
and it slides out from under him. With a thud, metal-incased flesh meets stone, and Niccomo has the breath knocked from his lungs as his world fades to blackness. His momentum carries him over the pit's edge, where he disappears from Elicaryn's view. Amidst the din of combat, the ceaseless baying growls from the demonic wolf, the chanting of arcane incantations and the echoing slaps of feet on stone, it's impossible to tell how Niccomo has fared...

Re: Bink's Rise of the Runelords 2: Delving Thistletop and beyond!
Elicaryn attempts to flee the scene, the significance of what may prove to be Niccomo's last brave act of defiance not lost on the young paladin. Calling upon Shelyn's blessing, the worst of her wounds are healed. Cries of irritation and anger rise from the pit, though the face of the party's foe does not. The wizard dashes forward, looking down in meager attempt to provide aid. One cry rises above the din: "Slay them!" The beast, giving heed to its master, lunges.
Its feet continue to churn the air, propelling it forward though it defies explanation. With a snarl, it snaps at Elicaryn, before continuing to rise up the stairwell and out of sight. Having seen its tactics once before, Elicaryn deftly interposes her glaive, though the fiend leaves clear grooves in the haft of the weapon.

Re: Bink's Rise of the Runelords 2: Delving Thistletop and beyond!
RUNRUNRUNRUNRUNRUNRUNRUN...
Vintr speed through the halls, the howls echoing through the halls as he tried to distance himself from the hound. His heart beat loudly in his chest as he sprinted, tunnel vision focused on finding the exit, finding daylight.
Runrunrunrunrunrunrunrunrun...
He could practically hear the beasts claws behind him, clacking on the stone, its growls warning him the slavering jaws were about to snap on his calf ... or neck. He continued to rush forward, flying past the steps.
Run ... run ... run ... run ... run ... run ... run ... run ... run ...
As Vintr ran, the pounding in his heart slowed, the powerful fear slowly fading. He blinked as he watched his companions continue to rush forward, desperate to escape the chasing hound. But now, the fear was tempered... no more frightening than any combat. Frowning, Vintr felt the stirrings of anger at being tricked, and forced to abandon his companions.
As he stopped running, Vintr remembered something- a scroll he had purchased! Pulling it forth, he read from the scroll, the magic targeting Cade and washing away the fear controlling him.

Re: Bink's Rise of the Runelords 2: Delving Thistletop and beyond!
The door opens without much noise. That's odd, Cade thinks to himself. I could swear I remember the hinges being a little rusty the last time I was here. When was that again?
Stepping into the quiet of the library, Cade takes a moment to stand in the profile of the tall glass windows. It must be a lovely day, as the heat of the sun starts to warm him. The windows stained, alchemically treated with a variety of bright colors. They show scenes from myth, with great fantastical heroes and monsters dueling under a tumultuous sky. There, the meteor that was Earthfall, and the glassworker's take on the fall of Old Azlant. It's funny, seeing as Azlant is... Azlant is... he can't seem to finish the thought. There is a connection there, to something important. But he can't put it together. It doesn't matter.
That's when it starts to snow.
Only, the snowflakes aren't snowflakes. They're pages. A maelstrom of ink and paper swirl around him, as the collections from the shelves begin to tumble to the ground. There is no rhyme or reason to it - he can't see what is causing the destruction, or why which page goes where. I don't have all of the answers here. And for some reason, that realization doesn't bother him. He's known these books for most of his life, could state most of their most important facts from memory. But that doesn't mean he is responsible for solving every problem. Dimly, through the crinkling of the paper and the rising of a new wind - a wind? In a library? How preposterous - he thinks he can hear a scream.
It's his voice he hears. He can feel the sweat on his palms, on his brow. His heart is beating too quickly, chest rising and falling. Cardiovascular irregularities, brought on by an artificially induced state of panic. But why now? The tendrils grip at him, beneath the skin. The first page slashes his cheek, drawing blood. And then another, near his wrist. The library walls begin to fold in. I can't... I can't breathe... At the edge of his vision, the scholar sees a figure approaching through the white storm. At first, it looks like somebody he knew once, but chose to forget. And then he sees the elf's face. Vintr.
Snapping back to his surroundings, Cade closes his mouth where he had been screaming. Thistletop. The goblins. Nualia. Closing his eyes for the briefest of moments, the investigator centers himself. That should not have happened. When he opens his eyes again, he takes stock of where he's standing. They are back on the first level of the underground complex, already through the war room. Vintr stands not too far away, and he can hear the receding footsteps that signify somebody else running away. Arcturus, he remembers belatedly. He and the sorcerer had both been affected by the howl. Even now, details start to come back.
"Ely and Niccomo are still down there," he says to the monk. "We should return, and swiftly. I will do my best to hold them off at the stairwell -" And then Cade looks at his hands, which are empty. He shakes his head despondently. "My blade. I must have dropped it when I first fell prey to that magic. No doubt it is still down there, and without it I won't be of much use to you in a fight. If you have another scroll, I can go remedy Arcturus' situation while you go back down for the others."
Spoiler: OOCHow many rounds have passed he first fell prey to the howl? Is it 3 now?
Cade is going to take a scroll of remove fear from Vintr if he has one, and then book it to try to save Arcturus from spending even more of this cluster f*ck running away.Last edited by 3SecondCultist; 2017-11-26 at 10:13 AM.

Re: Bink's Rise of the Runelords 2: Delving Thistletop and beyond!
As Cade makes his query, it becomes apparent that the howls and snarls of the demonic hound are not just in their minds. Elicaryn watches it pursue its prey, quickly outpacing the more heavily-burdened paladin. She watches it round the corner, and does her best to give chase.
In fact, as Vintr and Cade turn to look, the yeth takes the same corner through the air, alighting briefly on the wall, before leaping to the floor and lunging at Vintr with fire-lit eyes. The monk raises his arms just in time to slap aside its slavering jaws, leaving them to clack shut on empty air.

Re: Bink's Rise of the Runelords 2: Delving Thistletop and beyond!
Seeing the hound close in on them from around the corner, Cade abandons his previous plan. Instead, he flicks his wrist. With a soft whirring noise, a dagger materializes into his palm, and he brandishes the grip tightly while keeping the blade directed at his enemy. It's not much - probably not enough - but damn it all, they haven't come this far just to let a few accursed hounds chase them off right at the outset.
Then he pauses. Even if I could get in close enough, there's no chance my dagger would do the trick. But there is something, an item that has been sitting near the top of his backpack no less. Unlacing the string with nimble hands, the investigator pulls out the alchemical sack. Vintr will no doubt recognize the device from the Cathedral of Wrath beneath Sandpoint: a tanglefoot bag. "Stay out of my line of fire," Cade says without looking at his companion. "And get ready to break that monster's neck."
Then the adhesive payload is in the air, headed straight for the fiendish dog.
Spoiler: Round 4 ActionsCade's going to use his swift action to draw his masterwork dagger, then he will draw and use one of his tanglefoot bags, throwing it right at the hound. If it lands, that puppy is entangled for (2d4)[5] rounds. It also needs to make a DC 15 Reflex save or be stuck in place.

Re: Bink's Rise of the Runelords 2: Delving Thistletop and beyond!
Vintr had just finished the incantation freeing Cade, still holding the extra scroll in his left hand, when a sound keyed him to move to the side. He half turned and ducked, just avoiding the snap of jaws as the flying hound attacked him from behind. He barely registered Cade's comments, turning to run past the man as the bag of alchemical goo flew forward to trap the hound. He murmured in elvish, "Hold it off ... I'll gather the mage."
Sprinting after Arcturus, he began to read the spell as he approached, trying to free the man from the fear.

Re: Bink's Rise of the Runelords 2: Delving Thistletop and beyond!
Standing firm, Cade lobs the leather bag. As it comes into contact with the beast's maw, it splatters open, thoroughly covering its face with green, viscous slime. Stunned, the creature shakes is toothy maw, sending tendrils of ichor flying into the floors and walls. As Vintr turns to use his last scroll on Arcturus, the beast lunges- but the strands hold fast. Once more its teeth clack shut, this time not even close to the fleeing monk. Turning its focus to cade, it strains against the strands for several seconds, unable to close the distance.
Just as Cade is about to breathe a sigh of relief, the hideously-adorned double-doors shake with a resounding thud. Something is on the other side, and none too happy about it.
Map updatedSpoiler: OOCSo Arcturus actually gets a turn this round, thanks to Vintr's action and particularly convenient line-of-sight. Re: Bink's Rise of the Runelords 2: Delving Thistletop and beyond!
"Ughn... wha??" Arcturus shakes his head to clear to fog of the magically induced panic, and the specifics of their circumstances come crashing back to him. "Sir Niccomo! Damned hounds..." He quickly weaves a spell to augment his defenses as Vintr catches him up on the situation. "Now I'm angry! Cade, catch this! Hold fast, comrades - our victory is at hand!" Producing a wand from his jacket, he focuses desperately on trying to activate it...
Spoiler: ActionsStandard action for last round will be to cast shield on self (3 min duration. This is in addition to the already-applied mage armor)
Here's what I'd like to accomplish: I understand that Arcturus possesses a silver dagger that Yen claimed earlier. If that is true, Arcturus will move to T/17 while withdrawing the dagger and the wand of bless, and then pass the dagger to Cade as a free action.
As his standard action he will attempt to activate the wand of bless using Use Magic Device: (1d20+10)[26] vs DC 20
If he successfully activates the wand, the morale bonus increases to +2 from his "Heroic Echo" bloodline power, and as an immediate action he shares the increased bonus with all allies for 4 rounds.
Boom! Everyone has +2 to attacks and saves vs fear for 4 rounds, and then +1 for 6 rounds after that.

Re: Bink's Rise of the Runelords 2: Delving Thistletop and beyond!
Now that he has had a moment to think, Cade recognizes the creature in front of him. A yeth hound, I believe they are called. Highholme had a section on auxiliary demonic entities, and he found entries on such creatures within them. They typically associate with bestial demons, and serve as guardians and trackers to abyssal cults. If nothing else, their presence here signifies that Nualia's position in Lamashtu's eyes might be more prestigious than the group has initially considered. Seeing the woman herself downstairs - her arm, the scratches on her belly - is further proof that she has made significant progress in whatever transformative ritual she is currently undergoing in service of her new mistress. Cade tries not to think about Niccomo still down there with her - the old man is not as fast as the rest of them, and it would be entirely in-character for him to try and hold the line like some noble fool.
Well, the investigator thinks only a split second later as he hears Vintr's footsteps receding, I guess I'll have to be the one to hold the line like some noble fool. The hound in front of him appears to be trapped in place, and will no doubt be for at least a few more seconds. Cade takes stock of his options. A brute force approach will never work, not with the right materials. I could try to leverage it between Vintr and myself, but the sounds at the door are not encouraging. The balance of probability is that whatever lies behind the portal is not an ally - given that there are no audible goblin voices, chances are that it is another yeth hound or a monster just like it. Moving forward without a quick end to an engagement promises a rather unfavorable outcome.
It is at that exact moment that he hears Arcturus arrive. The first thing that Cade notices is that his limbs feel lighter, with a power he was lacking even at his full strength. Exhaling slightly, he turns to thank the sorcerer, only to see a blade extended hilt first in his direction. Cade recognizes it immediately as the knife that Yen took from the catacombs beneath Sandpoint. He locks eyes with the sorcerer, bounding back to take the dagger with a silent nod of thanks. Then he turns to face the yeth hound once more. Hearing its bays, Cade holds the blade out in a readied stance. "That yeth hound will break out of its containment in a few moments. I can hold here or wait, but that depends on Vintr. Where is the monk? If we can surround it, I will have a much better chance at putting the beast down."
Spoiler: Round 5 ActionsCade is going to move down to T16 and spend a move action picking up the silver dagger from Arcturus. Seeing as he can't move and attack again, he's going to hold position at T16 until he actually has a chance to stab the dog. Also, I really don't want to get flanked, so having Vintr up front with him will help a lot in that regard.

Re: Bink's Rise of the Runelords 2: Delving Thistletop and beyond!
With both of his companions freed from the fear, Vintr turned to follow the group. He arrived behind Cade in time to hear the man ask about him. He responded quietly, "I am here. Arturus, watch our backs - the mercenary may move to take advantage of this distraction. Cadeus, I am unfamiliar with this beast ... what is it?"
He stood easily balanced, ready to help ward off any attacks from the hound ...
Sprinting after Arcturus, he began to read the spell as he approached, trying to free the man from the fear.

Re: Bink's Rise of the Runelords 2: Delving Thistletop and beyond!
Ely finished the stairs and rounded the corner just as Cade was taking up his position.
Actually, saying she 'rounded' the corner was maybe too strong a word. It was more of a half-dazed stumble. She seemed barely aware of her surroundings.
She blinked eyes that were red and raw as she noticed the hound, as if seeing it for the first time. "Oh.
Okay."
She swung the glaive off her shoulder in a quick move, and stabbed. Not the sweeping, elegant motions she normally employed; a simple, brutal thrust.

Re: Bink's Rise of the Runelords 2: Delving Thistletop and beyond!
The party reconvenes, with the notable absence of Sandpoint's resident veteran. Gathering on opposite sides of the bound hellhound, Elicaryn is able to make good use of her pole arm, though she grimaces at the unusually light injury inflicted by its blade.
The beast struggles mightily against the slimy tendrils rooting it in place. Though a few of the thinner tendrils begin to harden, crack, and snap, they hold firm.
When the doors to the left rattle again, it doesn't come as a surprise. Half a heartbeat later, however, another impact strikes the door. With a resounding crack, they settle back into place, still holding... for the moment.

Re: Bink's Rise of the Runelords 2: Delving Thistletop and beyond!
"It's a yeth hound," Cade says to Vintr's belated arrival. "They're demonic creatures, often used as tokens of favor for influential cults and the like. No doubt Nualia's activities have earned their service from her dark mistress."
Although somewhat relieved to see Ely, Cade can not help but notice that she is alone. No time to think about that; this fiend needs to be dealt with. Advancing with his dagger in one hand, the scholar-adventurer moves forward. He can feel the magic coursing through him, the blade at his side a glimmering thorn. It won't do but scratch the creature, but every hit is enough.

Re: Bink's Rise of the Runelords 2: Delving Thistletop and beyond!
Vintr glanced at the banging doors, uncertain he could do anything to bar them. Cade was certainly the more mechanically inclines if the group, but he might be able to hold them closed for a period of time. "I do not know if I can disable the doors, but I can try to impede their opening." Vintr cautiously advanced as best he could towards the doors ...

The glaive bit into the hound lightly. Unsatisfyingly. The vague expression on the elf's expression vanished, a different light filling her eyes.
'Yeth hounds,' she heard Caedus. Demonic tokens of favour? Her grip tightened on the weapon. There was a wiry strength in her, and right now, she wanted to put it to use stabbing that hound again and again until she started to feel better...

Re: Bink's Rise of the Runelords 2: Delving Thistletop and beyond!
Cade and Elicaryn lash out, their blades both biting into the hound. Blood starts to well up where Cade struck, and the creature snarls, lashing out at the investigator. Cade just avoids the sudden lunge, breathing in the bitter, acrid scent of flame and sulfur where its teeth just missed his neck.
For a moment, silence comes from the door. Then, instead of shuddering impact, a howl rings out. With a chill, everyone recognizes the bay. Through sheer force of will, Cade, Arcturus, and Vintr funnel their fear into anger. Elicaryn stops cold, and with wide-eyes, begins running north, back into the depths. She stumbles when she hits the grease patch, and falls to all-fours, unable to continue.

Re: Bink's Rise of the Runelords 2: Delving Thistletop and beyond!
"Eli, come back! Gods be damned!" Arcturus rushes after the paladin through the crowded corridor, heedless of the hound's snapping jaws as he circles it. When he reaches the other side of the hound he dismays of changing her mind, and turns to face the beast, drawing his own dagger. "Fine, let's send you back to the hells you came from!" He weaves a minor spell with one hand while his other threatens the beast with the dagger.

Re: Bink's Rise of the Runelords 2: Delving Thistletop and beyond!
Cade is not surprised when he hears a second - no, make that a third - yeth hound behind the double doors. Of course Nualia will have them guarding all of the important locations in her base. That he had deduced the most likely identity of the creature before it bayed helped the investigator in steeling himself to the latter's effects. Unfortunately, Ely doesn't seem to have fared as well, and he watches in a mixture of horror and amusement as she turns tail and runs, only to collapse on her hands and knees.
"Damn it all, Ely. Could you not have held it together for just a moment longer? We needed some solidarity just now." As he mutters the words, Cade thinks darkly back to his own failure to hold the line less than a minute ago. Of course, that scenario is completely different. A tactical retreat would have been essential to their survival in either case. His flight from the melee was simply... premature. Still, the demonic creature is alive and needs to be dealt with. Angling nimbly to the side, Cade takes up a position between the bound dog and the double doors, slashing at his foe for a third time.
Spoiler: Round 7 ActionsCade is taking a 5 ft step to S14, and then just continuing to attack the yeth hound.

Re: Bink's Rise of the Runelords 2: Delving Thistletop and beyond!
The new howl sent a chill down Vintr's back, something that bothered him immensely. Failure for lack of skill was one thing; failure for lack of will was unacceptable. Fortunately, his own will didn't break this time, nor did Cade and Arcturus. Unfortunately, Elicaryn's will did and she turned to run, only to fall in the spot of lubricant at the end of the hall. Had their lives not been on the line, had Niccomo not been left behind, it might have been humorous. Right now, it was frustrating and disconcerting - they might all die here.
As he considered courses of action, he watched Cade struggle internally, then reluctantly step forward and attack. Frowning for a moment, Vintr decided upon a course of action - stepping forward, he called upon his energy magiks and attacking with two swift kicks.

Re: Bink's Rise of the Runelords 2: Delving Thistletop and beyond!
The steadfast trio continues to stand firm, facing the demons now as a (mostly) concerted front. Arcturus dances past the hound, unintentionally leaving himself open to the beast's attack, though he narrowly escapes a gruesome gnashing of teeth. Cade easily dodges the creature's next half-hearted attack, as it continues to snarl and flail about in its gooey entrapment.
Both Vintr and Cade lash out and strike true. For the first time, a thick viscous ichor appears on its flanks, as well as Cade's dagger.
The doors at Cade's back shake again under the impact of whatever lies behind, but they continue to hold.

Re: Bink's Rise of the Runelords 2: Delving Thistletop and beyond!
"Yes! That's it!" Arcturus crows triumphantly as the group's efforts begin to show results. "Now, demon - you have angered the wrong mage!" His voice is made deeper and louder by magical augmentation, even as flurries of eldritch energies seem to play about his hands. It's a parlor trick that Cade and Vintr have seen many times, but it usually achieves the intended effect.
Spoiler: ActionsMovement-wise, If Arcturus can delay such that Cade goes first (w/ flanking), and then Arcturus can move to flank with Vintr as well, then do that. Well the theatrics certainly are impressive, if indeed their performer is not. Cade, entirely unfazed by the performance, resists making a comment. The visible progress that he seems to be making on this beast will continue apace if he maintains focus. Re: Bink's Rise of the Runelords 2: Delving Thistletop and beyond!
Vintr was mildly surprised that his attacks had affected the beast. Of course, it had been an educated gamble, but one that initial paid off. Re: Bink's Rise of the Runelords 2: Delving Thistletop and beyond!
Somehow, despite the odds, the creature seems subdued by Arcturus' theatrics. Its lunges are more half-hearted, its expression almost more wary than ferocious. Still, there is fury, and still it longs to clamp its slavering jaws on Cade, but still the tanglefoot bag holds. Some of the larger strands begin to snap and crack, their viscosity lessens by the relatively long exposure to the air. Snarls come from the doors, but no attacks.

Re: Bink's Rise of the Runelords 2: Delving Thistletop and beyond!
The lights and colors around Arcturus subside as he breaks his concentration on them, his attention shifting to more mundane concerns. From his position opposite Cade he lunges forward with his own dagger, giving a lackluster battle cry. His skill with a blade is nothing to brag about, but maybe it's enough to distract the creature...
