The smuggler seems to snap under Royana's presence, merely staring fearfully into the imposing woman's eyes. Finally she shudders and speaks slowly, "I tried dumping it. The voices don't like that. I tried giving it. They just come back, angrier. I can't give it for less than I got it. Please, two thousand, and you can have all of it," the woman's trembling hand is outstretched.

Paronomasia sighs a bit "So it is one of those deals. I thought so." it was a powerful phrase. I thought so. Even if he didn't actually think it, using that phrase could make him seem more omnipotent than he really was. The gears turned in his head, why was the light bright not suppose to find this? Could it mean if they sold it to the holy church.. that it would become plagued with nightmares until they could sell it for more? Perhaps that was what they were meant to do with it. turning to the other gnome, he utters another powerful phrase. "Well, you know what to do with it."

Ricardo nodded along before he finally sent to everyone in the room "May we see what we're freeing you from? Voices are nothing new for myself so I'm not afraid of being exposed to whatever angry spirit haunts the item." To his group only he sent "I can spare another 500 if you don't want to free this blessed soul from her burden forever."

"It's below, yes. Come, come with your gold," the woman insists as she leads the way with her dim lantern. As the group follows, they pass by a bunk that was previously obscured. A gaunt and pale looking man sleeps there, flirting with death's embrace. The woman does not turn to look at him as she passes. She pulls open a hatch and descends down a stepladder to the next level down.

Moving aside some empty barrels, she reveals a set of crates. She seems to recoil from the crates, refusing to touch them. Those among the cultist who investigate them for magical auras find it unnaturally empty. It is an unsettling void, as if something were absorbing the ambient magic surrounding it.

"Yes, two thousand, yes, and you take all of it," the woman reiterates her offer and outstretches her hand.

There's a itching sensation against Aygan's hand as it approaches the nearest crate, spreading across his body as he draws closer. The crate is nailed shut, but it yields to the strength of the demon's brood. The woman winces but says nothing as the crate is opened. The insides are packed with hay, obscuring the full contents, but a soft glow emanates through the hay and portends something more promising. Aygan pushes aside the hay to reveal a set of seven longswords, each with a glowing violet pommel. A staff of some sort with a demonic figurine on its head pokes through the hay and seems to glare at him menacingly. An exquisite silver lockbox is untouched by tarnish or age.

As Aygan's hand moves through the hay there is suddenly a sharp and agonizing pain. Blood erupts from a pinprick in his hand, spewing forth with unnatural force. His eyes dart to his injured hand; an iridescent needle now appears obvious among the hay. A strand of silvery filament threads through the needle's eye. Yet as the immediate pain passes, Aygan notices the itching sensation from earlier has disappeared entirely.

With a shrug and knowledge that there's more than one object to gift Ricardo reaches into his pocket and pulls out fifty platinum from seemingly nowhere. He then waits to see who else is pitching in even as he's glancing at the items and sending to the group "I want to gift one to that noblewoman to give to the Duke. Maybe sneak one in to a guard's barracks or otherwise replace some of their weapons with such fun objects."

Royana follows, and watches Aygan's experience with cold interest, at least until the prick of blood appears. Eyes widen, and senses sharpen at the feel of pain, and she surreptitiously licks her lips. Fascinating. she replies to the group, but doesn't make any obvious movements. With the full amount offered, the smuggler takes her payment graciously, leaving the party to examine their gains as she moves to open the hatch to the deck. Whenever the party is ready, the crates can be hauled up for them to take with them.

The group takes inventory before moving out, revealing quite the large find:

    First Crate

    Set of 7 Unholy Longswords
These swords are forged in the style of the Tashmari demon worshippers of the Forsaken Lands. The Tashmari were driven into obscurity long ago, and the crusaders attempted to destroy all traces of them. How exactly these swords survived and came to be into possession of this smuggler is doubtlessly an interesting tale, but will likely never be known. None of these swords appear to be cursed, but due to their obvious heretical origin would be dangerous to display openly in Virtzalm.

Staff of Curses with Demonic Figurehead
This malicious staff inflicts curses, but does not appear to be cursed itself. The design of the staff is simple but elegant and does not hint at its origin so displaying it openly should not be a problem, but its black magic would make its sale illegal in Virtzalm. The staff currently has 6 charges.

The demonic figurehead is in fact a separate magical item that has been fixed quite securely to the staff. While attached, the demonic figurehead allows an alternative means of recharging the staff. Once per day by using the staff to coup-de-grace a living humanoid creature, the staff will recharge 1/2 charge per hit die of the victim (minimum 1). The demonic figurehead also adds the vicious property, but only while the staff has at least 1 charge. It is a full round action to attach or remove the figurine. It should go without saying that such an item is blatantly illegal in Virtzalm and cannot be displayed openly.

    Silver Lockbox
The lockbox appears warded against magical examination. There is no indication of a curse on this item. The style of the box is plain enough that its origin in the Forsaken Lands is not easily discerned, and could potentionally be resold in the Virtzalm markets. If a matching key could be found or created, this precious lockbox could sell for as much as 10,000 gp, but without the key it will sell for less than half that much. Opening the lockbox without damaging it may prove difficult and time-consuming, as the lock is magical in nature. It is unknown at this time what it contains.

    The Needle
A close examination of the needle reveals that it is a magical container of sorts, with the eye of the needle being a portal to an extradimensional space. This explains why the silvery filament extending from the needle appears to come out one side but not the other. Inspecting this in detail proves impossible, as the portal is just too small to see through clearly. The item has no magical aura, and seems to dampen other magical auras around it. If worn like a pin, the needle would have the effect of a Greater Magic Aura spell on the wearer, causing them to radiate no magical auras.

    Mysterious Tome
This thick and heavily bound book is covered with mysterious runes and lettering. The language is not one that is recognizable or readable. Opening it reveals arcane illustrations and diagrams. Some of the symbols of power are recognizable, but others are completely foreign. One page contains a very familiar map, depicting the region surrounding Virtzalm. However, the city is much smaller and the forests closer and larger. It must have been drawn a long time ago. Without translation, the book is little more than a curiosity. It does appear to have magical protections against the elements, but otherwise has no special properties.

As the book is unveiled to the group, the ioun stone around Jendeli's head glows softly.

    Spoiler: Jendeli only
    Show

The symbols and letters on the binding of the tome swirls before your eyes, rearranging themselves into words you understand. Though you'll need time to read the book in more detail, at a glance it appears to be some sort of encyclopedia containing histories, depictions of ancient demigods, and magical rituals.

    Scroll Case
This imposing scroll case is marked with every manner of unholy symbol, but they are used haphazardly as if the person didn't understand their true meaning. In any case, the church wouldn't hesitate over such a trifling mystery and would instead destroy such an obvious heresy without second thought.

Opening the case reveals a trove of scrolls: three copies each of Lesser Planar Binding, Magic Circle against Evil, and Create Undead. There is a tenth scroll that is curiously blank, but exudes a powerful aura of necromancy. It's not clear what it is, and the necromancy aura does raise the possibility that it could be cursed.

    Bootlicker's Trunk
These magic containers were given to military officers as a practical joke many years ago. Any footwear placed inside are instantly cleaned, but the dirt finds its way to other articles of clothing placed within. The creator stopped making them after a rash of death threats, and so they are quite rare. They are legitimately practical magical items, provided one only stores boots inside, and as a result they tend to fetch a fair price from wealthy collectors. They typically sell for 8,000 gp, although this trunk as a bit of damage so it would probably only sell for 5,000 gp. Unless the damage were fraudulently hidden, that is.

    Second Crate

    Sack of Dried Spirit Leaves
Commonly used in the creation of magical potions and other reagents, the import of spirit leaves is heavily controlled. While risky to sell, they could fetch a huge price to the right buyer. Alternately, they could be used as material component in the creation of potions or alchemical creations. The leaves would be worth about 15,000 gp if documentation could be forged for them, but on the black market would sell for around 5,000 gp.

    100 Oblivion Smokes
A narcotic specialty of the Forsaken Lands, oblivion smokes bring powerful and vivid dreams to those who use them. However, they also tend to create dependency and many a soul has lost themselves completely to them, hence their moniker. Due to their rarity in this part of the world, people pay handsomely for them, typically at the rate of 100 gp per smoke. Of course, selling them is a huge risk.

    Fine Trunks & Garments
A series of finely crafted wooden trunks contain luxury garments from the Forsaken Lands. While the style of these garments would draw suspicion, their beauty and splendor (and popularity among the nobility) often leads the church to turn a blind eye to them. The trunks themselves are of fine make and are worth 500 gp, but the clothing is truly of exceptional quality and collectively the wardrobe is worth 10,000 gp.

In addition, a few of the articles of enchanted clothing among the others (not included in the price above)

    Glamered Shadow Silk Robes
This set of Silken Ceremonial Robes has been woven with strands from the plane of shadows. It grants a +5 bonus to stealth checks and is also glamered. In its regular appearance it is regal and imposing, but also makes its shadowy origins obvious. This would make it contraband in a city beholden to the light. So long as the wearer was careful to adjust the glamer, however, wearing it should be safe. The item does have a curse, but only affects good-aligned creatures who attempt to wear it.

    Blinkback Belt
This belt is currently attached to the silk robes, although the articles could be separated without issue if desired. The belt is of similar make to the robes, and they were likely intended as a pair, but it contains fewer obvious signs of its origins so it could be sold separately without issue.

    Tentacle Cloak
This rather disturbing magical item isn't strictly illegal in Virtzalm, and lacks any obvious indications of origin within the Forsaken Lands, but its effect would none-the-less be looked upon with scrutiny. Attempting to sell it would likely net one quarter rather than half value.

    Cursed Cassock of the Clergy
It is curious to see the attire of a priest of the church of holy light among these foreign articles, but a close investigation reveals the truth. The item is cursed when worn by a priest of the holy light. It provides a -3 penalty instead of +3 bonus to charisma-based checks, and any time it is used as a divine focus it fills the wearer's head with doubt and indecision. Aside from a curse removal spell, the Cassock can only be removed if the cleric renounces their faith. Its other effects provide the normal benefits of a Cassock of the Clergy.

When worn by a pretender of the faith, however, the item provides the normal effect of such a magical article and can be removed freely.

    Two Quick Runner's Shirts
These light silken tunics are clearly designed for a hotter climate, but will still be comfortable under a thicker layer of clothing. They are simple and elegant, and would likely attract little attention if sold.

    Nightmare Boots
These boots don't seem to fit with the rest of the wardrobe, which otherwise has a consistent theme. How they ended up with the rest of the articles is a mystery, but the inclusion of the hair of evil outsiders makes them anathema here in Virtzalm and there is no way they could be sold. However, with proper care to avoid unwanted attention they could be worn in public.

    Third Crate

    Alchemy Manuals, Tools, and Supplies
A large collection of alchemy manuals along with the supplies and tools that go with them are loosely held in a series of smaller wooden box within the crate. These would likely be quite valuable to the right buyer. The exact amount is difficult to predict, due to it being a small market and the fact that a complete set like this hasn't come to market in recent memory. Unless the cult has use for it, it might be prudent to either quietly seek out buyers or put it up for an auction.

    Exquisite Urns
A set of five urns appear to depict some historical battle. The people and places depicted are unfamiliar to you, but the beauty of the artwork alone makes them quite valuable, perhaps worth as much as 1000 gp for the set. However, they may be worth much more to a collector of antiques or historical items.

    Set of Wands
Placed inside a velvet-lined box (itself worth 100 gp due to its exquisite make) are a set of wands. Though the box appears to belong to a crusader of the holy light, its contents are very obviously from a much darker source. The wands are as much religious as magical implements, but interestingly they all seem to come from different religious sects. The most plausible explanation is that this is a trophy collection of a crusader, illicitly keeping dark implements from his defeated foes. A foolish decision, as they have now found their way once again into the hands of the church's enemies. The following wands are in the case:

Screaming Flames (caster level 8, 11 charges)
    Deeper Darkness (23 charges)
    Protection from Good (44 charges)
    Desecrate (16 charges)
    Sentry Skull (32 charges)

    Necklace of Fireballs Type IV
Mixed in with the alchemical reagents is a necklace of fireballs, unused and still with all its beads attached.

After searching methodically through each crate and listening to his more learned comrades' descriptions, Aygan nods to himself and begins to re-seal the crates. "Let's get these stored away - we can decide what to do with them once they're under cover, and there are no prying ears. Speaking of..." He finishes with the crate and turns to loom over the woman.

"Thank you for this opportunity. I hope to do business with you again."

Ricardo couldn't help but grin and sent to the group "I believe I could walk around with one of these gifts... But yes, let's transport these to our Lord. Maybe come up with a proper use for them instead of everyone clamoring for such divine items." As he walked past the smuggler he gave a polite nod and sent to her a simple suggestion "Thank you ma'am, go and get some sleep" and then in her voice "I should forget them and this entire business."

The kobold looks over the items as well, nodding a little. Though the idea of adding the boots to his Supervillain costume did intrest him somewhat. It would be difficult however to wear them in public without some additional measures beyond his hat of humanguise.

One thing disturbs him the most and that was after a cursory glance over the items, he couldn't figure out which was cursed. Besides that, if it was the entire thing cursed then the one who payed for them would be tied to it. At least from his understanding of the magic.

Never the less however, it would be possible for them to begin building a rather magnificent base if they could get some good funds form it. He still needed to secure a good path in and out of the sewers though, a task he had set his minons to doing.

The smuggler says nothing but seems despondent as she opens the hatch to the upper deck. water pours down as she works quickly to move the ropes and lift up the crates. She closes the deck behind the party after the last of the crates reaches the upper deck, a final look on her face being a mix of relief and disappointment. It's clear that now that the curse no longer weighs upon her, she is coming to terms with just how much she has parted with.

As the group follows the way they came, they come across an unfolding scene. The haughty woman from earlier lies motionless on the ground with the two young men standing over her. One holds a large wooden oar in his hands, visibly trembling, while the other berates him angrily, "what have you done!? we're going to be hanged now!" It seems Ricardo's instigating earlier touched a rather sensitive nerve.

Ricardo swung by a little closer to the pair of dock hands as if he was just enjoying the rain. To the group he sent "I will plant the idea to go to my apartments and we can talk to them in the morning. I'll meet you down at the eye in a moment." As he walked by the two dock hands he sent, in one of their voices to them "The only solution is to strip the body of finery and dump the body. I remember hearing there was a place in the Spades that was safe, too. I just need to tell them Ricardo sent us." He timed it so he could hear a response from them as he walked to a different alleyway, circled back to the proper sewer entrance, and made his way back to the rest of the group.

The two young men begin whispering to each other, their voices no longer audible against the winds. The group moves past them, just beyond the illumination of their lantern, but a minute or so later there is a splash as the rather portly woman's body hits the water. Ricardo will likely have some interesting company in the evening.

It takes another hour or so to retrace their steps back through the sewers. Securing a more direct route to come and go by would be very convenient. Perhaps it would be a good task to assign to new and eager recruits to the cult. In any event, the walk through the sewers is quite uncomfortable. The rains have raised the water level, and both Ricardo and Paronomasia find themselves up to their chests in it.

"Sorry boss, I'd give you a lift, but my hands are full," Zohar shrugs as he readjusts his grip on the crate he's carrying. As the group approaches the resting place of the eye, they hear a commotion and the clang of swords. There is the obvious worry that someone has stumbled upon their sanctuary yet again, but a cautious peek around the corner reveals that is not the case.

The snake-like creature from the previous night looms large over the room, its tail blocking the path to the exit. In the middle of the room, the space before the eye, two commoners feebly swing at each other with rusty blades. They are directly in front of the eye's gaze. The snake creature's tail whips around restlessly, but carefully blocking these commoners from escaping. Several others stand motionless on the edge of the combat area with a look of terror on their faces.

"Ah, I'd wondered where you'd gotten to," the snake creature notices the cultists returning, "I brought some... entertainment for lord Arorch. Those who please our master can serve him. Those who do not, become food for my pets," the snake creature points towards a mass of ooze that is writhing, presumably picking a fresh corpse clean of flesh.

One of the commoners falls to a blow. The middle-aged man who felled him trembles as he stands over the still-breathing body, then turns to the eye, "Pathetic! Finish that wretch," the eye screeches, clearly fully awake. With obvious hesitation, the man flips his blade around and plunges it into the chest of his fallen opponent. There's a scream of agony from one and grief from the other as the man finishes the job.

"There," he sobs, "am I done?"

"No," the eye speaks with dreadful spite, "keep fighting," without hesitation, the snake monster's tail whips around and slaps a young woman from behind, sending her toppling into the arena.

"I can't fight a girl. She's the same age as my daughter," the man objects to the eye's command.

"Fight, or die, or both!" the eye jeers. In the moment of distraction, the middle-aged man doesn't notice the young woman pick up the sword from the fallen combatant and stab him in the back. The man topples forward in shock of the unexpected strike. Without even waiting for the eye's command, she straddles him and begins stabbing viciously. The man's screams die out after a few moments, as the girl arises covered in his blood.

"I like her! She can live," the eye seems satisfied with the brief display of unrestrained violence. The snake-creature gently ushers the girl to the sidelines with its tail, then more aggressively maneuvers two more commoners into the ring. As they begin their tepid battle to the death, the snake creature turns to the cultists.

"So, how have these dank tunnels been treating you? I do hope this is temporary and you have bigger plans to come,"

Aygan watched the display with a critical eye, and snorted in disgust. "Pathetic. No strength, no skill, and less bloodthirst. I have children in my employ who could kill them all. You put on a poor show." Still, he drops the crate he was carrying and steps up to inspect each of the 'gladiators' in turn, ending with the bloodstained woman.

"Skill at arms is not what is on display here," the snake creature cackles, "it is fear and debasement; men and women who so readily turn their back on their so-called principles when their own lives are staked. Such high-minded things easily discarded under duress, and lord Arorch seems to appreciate those who cast them aside without hesitation," the creature casts its gaze towards the young woman.

The two commoners currently in the ring are both young men. One is tall and fat, while the other appears more muscular. What appears to have been a one-sided match-up has become much more even, as the fat one grabbed a sword more quickly and has blocked the other from grabbing a weapon of his own. Neither appear to be particularly adept as fighters, and make cautious and fleeting advances on each other. Aygan turns his attention from the uninteresting battle to the sidelines. There are only four left now. There is an older woman who doesn't look the sort to put up any fight, a scraggy-looking young man who at very least looks physically fit, and a lithe and lanky man who looks to be more bone than muscle. Finally, there's the bloodstained girl who had just fought. Her dress was already soaked by filthy storm water in the sewers, but now it is caked with blood. She still seems on an adrenaline high, and her hand still firmly grips the rusty blade she used to butcher the previous combatant.

There are three fresh corpses visible on the ground, including the one felled in the last combat round. At least one more was likely killed earlier as the ooze in the corner of the room feasts upon it.

Paronomasia watches after working his way through the water with the rest of the group. Tapping his chin for a moment, he maintains his poker face beyond that gesture. Something about this just seemed off to him. The Eye's delightful glee at watching the people kill each other put him on edge. While he didn't care that the human commoners were killing each other, there was one thing that villains don't think of when they're working as minons for someone above them, and that is when they displease their master.

Escape pods. He needed to make escape pods, something that the snake, a creature he was cautious around, wouldn't be able to find. The sewers were just perfect for him and his clan as he nodded to Zohar, moving to his own minons. He needed to get to work himself.

Yeah, Jendeli has clearly doesn't care how blood-thirsty this girl was, he's mesmerized by the Eye, it talked. Jendeli bowed before it once the spectacle of the girl and the men had finished, and said:

My Lord, I have done as you've asked. I hope that my service pleases you.

Ricardo grinned as he heard the noblewoman join the harbor. They could potentially be guards at the rate they were acting as his thoughts drifted to his plot and he made a mental note to get the zombies properly contained when the corpses found the impure ground was no longer to their liking. He'd need to find a proper outlet for them, maybe the forests...
His daydreaming was interrupted when they got back to the eye and the display of wanton violence. He didn't see the issue with mindlessly slaughtering the destitute since that was a quarter of his business plan. He did see an issue with the stock and sent "Give me a day and I can probably get some others to fight. People will do a lot when they're desperate after all" to the non-combatants.

Royana smiles brightly at the scene of carnage, the pain and despair nourishing her. Her features fall, however, when the snake creature speaks, the woman pointedly pulling out a handkerchief to cover her nose. "It is most wonderful to hear your voice more fully realized, my Lord. It takes a voice to fill a soul with hope, before the fist crushes it into despair." she drawls, swanning around to the side of the dank chamber, leaning up against a pillar. "And it gives me an excellent inroad for my plans. Comrades, I feel like I have understated the value of our opportunity in the spades. Yes, this veritable mountain of gold is going to be difficult to procure, but with it, we control the hopes and dreams of the entire district, if not the city."

The eye's gaze seems to fall upon Jendeli as he approaches. It is a strange sensation; the stone eye remains unmoving, its pupil locked in place, but there is no question that its focus and intent now lies upon the one addressing it. The eye remains silent for a moment, giving Royana a chance to approach and say her peace. A long silence follows, but is very clear the eye remains intent upon them, as if in careful consideration before speaking, "I need more followers. More faithful. You've done good work so far, but remain so few. Do as you will, but bring more into the fold,"

The eye's attention turns back to combat ring. It appears the more physically-able man had wrestled away the sword from his opponent and struck him down. The eye's gaze returns to the battle, "you're strong. I like that," the eye directs its voice towards the snake creature, "but are you vicious, too?"

Without a word the snake creature thrusts the elderly woman into the ring. She stumbles to her knees, almost within striking range of the man before her. Rather than getting up, she kneels and begins an audible prayer to the light. The man standing over her hesitates as she speaks. It does not sit well with the eye, however, which grows enraged "Strike her down! Strike her down or be struck down!" the man trembles, his eyes glancing between the old woman, the corpse at his feet, and the many armed cultists around him.

Aygan's voice is level, his tone strict, even as he still bows to his lord. "Do it, boy. You already have blood on your hands."

Jendeli slowly rises, and says: Either way I eat tonight. Decide whether I eat two corpses, or three.
