That's not remotely the same thing though - a member of groups A and B using group B iconography doesn't turn said group B iconography into group A iconography, regardless of how common the A-B overlap is.
I would really like to see a game made by Obryn, Kurald Galain, and Knaight from these forums.

I'm not joking one bit. I would buy the hell out of that.

I'm not familiar with the movie, but I've run into the meme a few times. I always thought either the guy absolutely hated whatever he had just seen but felt obligated to clap in public, or was either deeply moved or deeply insulted and fighting to not lose control of his emotions in public.

The Gay Men's Chorus has a video (one of the guys in it was a co-worker at the time) on youtube making fun of Shia LeBouef and Shia appears at the end and basically does the meme.

That was not what I meant. I said that I seen people of a particular profile being in a group who only partially shared his point of view, despite specific contradictions that may or may not arise on his beliefs. I never said those peculiar members where representative of a generality of any kind.

Heck, I know two Feminist parties who "hold a grudge" against each other because of a single topic, despite the fact that both probably agree on 99% of the other issues. In my experience no group is totally homogeneous on any level, and primarily: people have a natural tendency of not looking into "details".

Which goes back to the meme issue: people simply don't care what the original scene was about. They generally pay attention to what they interpret from what's in front of their eyes.

Would that be the Rob Cantor video featuring Actual Cannibal Shia LaBouef? Because I'm pretty sure the joke with Shia at the end is that he, himself, commissioned the performance and is basically clapping for himself. All the other seats are empty.

In regards to modern media, there's definite highs and lows, but the audience that's going to watch the bad is largely doing so either because they're not experienced enough to want more from their media or they've been inexperienced for long enough to get conditioned to it. Eating garbage fast food through your whole childhood makes it less likely you'll enjoy good food, because you're conditioned to that level of quality. It's not something particular to millennials either, sticking your kid in front of the boob tube and letting awful syndicated shows turn their media palate to **** has been a thing for as long as the television has. Another thing to keep in mind is that what gets made isn't just a reflection on who's watching it, but who's making it. Garbage in, garbage out.

It seemed clear to me when I saw it that Shia was, at the very least, very involved with the production, and given the set-up and imagery and delivery, I'm pretty sure he was intentionally aping the meme. That said, it has a bit different message when he's the only one in the audience.

As far as I can tell, Shia Labeouf didn't really get that started, Rob Cantor got all the artists together to make this a reality and then messaged Shia's manager because Shia had retweeted the original song a previous halloween.

Heck, the story of how the video came to be is pretty neat too. Low budget, a ton of communicating with artists, the heads they made took a good sixteen hours to complete, and they managed to shoot the entire video in just twelve. After that was just some editing, and voila, you got a fun video filled with all kinds of dancers, singers, musicians, just artists all over the place.

    ...

Unless you meant the intent of the video was to make it look like Shia had comissioned it, in which case I'll just go crawl back under my rock.

It is a bit different without the audience, but IIRC Shia has nearly the exact same expression on his face as Charles Kane does in the meme. I'm not sure why he'd be clapping for himself, though.
