A fair point. My thoughts about Amaranth's academic abilities would be that he does well in the humanities, but poorly in the hard sciences. I may need to re-arrange a skill point or two...

I should really write up Nanimo fully. I'll try to do that today. >.>

Edit: In fact, rough draft that isn't finished yet.

    Academics: Okay.
    Athletics: Inhuman.
    Blood Type: N/A
    Favourite Food: ...Food?

    Will: 8
    Miraculous Will: 3
    MP: 6

    Skills
    Superior Ghost-Driven Robot Girl 3*
    Academics 1
Expressing My Emotions Through Music 2
Passion: "Your Past Is What Makes You Who You Are" 2
    Remembering My Past Life -2
    Ghost Magic -1
Expressing My Emotions In Any Way Other Than Music -1
    Cool 2

Arcs: The Ace 2, Accursed 1 (Curse - Ghost), Gatekeeper 0 (Other - The Dead, Principle - Memories)
    Current Arc: Gatekeeper 1

    Emotion XP: Aww!

    Basic Quest:

    Perks:
Hand Cannon (Miraculous Action to transform her hand into a compressed air cannon. She can then make mundane actions using that cannon until the end of the scene, usually using Superior Ghost-Driven Robot Girl. 1 MP to transform slowly over the course of a couple actions, 2 MP to transform immediately. While active, it acts a +2 Tool for appropriate actions relating to shooting things with a compressed air cannon.)
Bond: "I won't let you down." 2 (Based on Ace arc level.)
    Cool 2 (from Cool Bonus)
Affliction: "I don't see the wickedness in those closest to me." (Based on Trust.)

    Powers:
Immortal - Naniko's robot outer shell and ectoplasmic nature mean that any injury doesn't impair her for long. Even missing material can be replaced with her ghostly form temporarily until she can find something to patch herself up with.
    Spoiler: Cost
    Show
0 MP—damage or enchantment has only temporary, appropriate effects on you
1 MP—you totally recover and shrug everything off 1-2 times mid-scene
2 MP—starting mid-scene, you shrug off attacks and other effects like they’re paper tigers
4 MP—you’re basically unaffected by the world around you

Tireless - Naniko has 3 Miraculous Will that can be used for any ordinary or Superior Skill. She attributes this to her robot body being more efficient and powerful than a mortal one. She's wrong.

Cool Bonus - Naniko has a Cool Perk with a rating equal to her The Ace arc rating.

The Ace - Naniko can invoke The Ace to enhance any action using a mundane or Superior Skill, granting it a +2 Tool bonus. She attributes this to the same reason she's Tireless, and is, again, wrong.
    Spoiler: Costs
    Show
    0 MP—starting mid-scene, take 1-2 enhanced actions
    1 MP—see “Push Yourself,” below.
    2 MP—starting mid-scene, all actions are enhanced
4 MP—enhance arbitrarily many actions for a scene.

Push Yourself - Naniko can push herself even harder to effectively raise the rating of any mundane or Superior Skill by 1 for a single action.
    Spoiler: Costs
    Show
1 MP—starting mid-scene, push yourself beyond the normal limits of the Ace
4 MP—do so at the beginning of the scene.

Legendary Master - Naniko can use her ectoplasmic form to take complete control over every part of her mechanical body, including parts that don't normally move, as well as allowing her to act as though she weighed much less than she really does - or much heavier, if she wants. At least, she thnks it's because of her ectoplasmic form interfacing with her mechanical body... She can choose to enhance a specific action, which then also gets the benefits of Pushing Herself, or she can just flood her body with this in general.
    Spoiler: Costs
    Show
2 MP—starting mid-scene, take perfect control over your body
4 MP—do this at any time

Determination - At the cost of a full 4 MP, Naniko can just completely smash all of her limits and push herself as hard and as far as she needs to... although she still has to pay lip service to what is notionally possible for a robotic ghost girl to accomplish.

    Sanctuary
    MP Bonus
    Falling From The World

The World-Breaker's Hand - Naniko's accursed touch strips memories from the world - rendering her target amnesiac or even causing the world to forget it ever existed. She can target specific memories, or the memories of specific people, events and places, to strip them out of the world... or she can just generally rip memories from the world if she's angry or desperate enough.
    Spoiler: Costs
    Show
    0 MP—1/book, declare something unmade
1 MP—unmake something a second or later time per book
2 MP—unmake something a second or later time per chapter
4 MP—unmake something a second time in a matter of hourss

Oblivious - Naniko has Affliction: "I don't see the wickedness in those closest to me." at a rating equal to her Trust issue.

For the hand cannon I would structure it more as a 1 MP per use Miraculous attack. Then again she does already have the World Breaker's Hand. I'd let her have a +2 Tool Bonus if she sticks with the current build while it's active.

So we got a ghost/robot, a skeleton, the school spirit, a fox-eared person and (tentatively) a seamstress.

    Sounds about right.

I edited my character sheet slightly to adjust skill levels and be more specific about the kind of power Amaranth's Legendary Weapon possesses. Should I also pick the starting quest for my Current Arc or is that something to be determined over the course of play?

Quests should be worked out before play. If a sample one doesn't do it for you we can easily design a custom Quest just for you.

So for the World-Breaker's Hand, I'm thinking Naniko's version revolves around removing memories, either from someone or of something. If she removes every single memory of a specific thing, it simply ceases to have ever existed, as even reality forgets about it. Thoughts?

I like it. The world forgets.

If you were a Strategist, you'd be dying of memory loss, slowly losing yourself until you're just a doddering fool who has write new memories for himself in your Sanctuary.

Or maybe the world forgets you.

I don't yet own the rulebook; are there online resources for character-building, or will the book be a prerequisite? I've heard it's a lovely read but terrible for understanding the actual mechanics.

The core book explains things fairly well; the problem is that its layout is rather labyrinthine. You'll be consulting the table of contents and index fairly frequently as you piece all the necessary info together.

As of that post, Magical Hero is now Chosen One and Specialist is now Gatecrasher (and a Blue Arc now). So it depends whether you see yourself as on an Aspect or Bindings Arc, which I suppose characterizes how dangerous your magic is to you.
Thanks for pointing that out. Being a Bindings Arc actually helped settle me on Specialist/Gatecrasher. Fits with the idea of an external force drawing in a reluctant descendant.

Also, apologies for the sluggish response here. I've been rolling things around a bit for the Tenko, just been a bit swamped the past couple of weeks at work. I'll try to get down some more thoughts and a WIP character sheet tomorrow.

Welcome back! And... yeah, I'd agree with Anno. Things often felt like they made sense to me as I was reading them (save for when they didn't >.> ), and it was all enjoyable stuff, but connecting the dots didn't come all that smoothly to me from reading the book (which is not to say they fully have now ^_^o ). I'd recommend getting the book.

For now, though, I'm not sure if there's a comprehensive and detailed repository floating around out there. But this page may help. It's mostly examples (though I find those are at least super-helpful to me in better grokking Jenna's mechanics), but down at the bottom under "Player Handouts," you'll find a player's guide, a mechanics cheat sheet, and a glossary of terms. I haven't looked into those in any real depth, but they should help give you a firmer system foundation.

The game is complicated enough that yes, you will need access to the rulebook, there's no Chuubo SRD. I can help you understand but I can't teach you the game from scratch.

On the subject, I found grokking Chuubo's to be a task that absorbed me for about three months. Knowing Nobilis so well helped but I had to get every book available, find every kickstarter giveaway, read Fable of the Swan (a novel at in Town) and pour through other people's games to really get it. The core book could be better organized and examples of play would have been helpful in the core. I found some good examples but in the core would have helped. At the point I am now I get how everything works but I've yet to really see it happen.

Alright, so after further thinking (in which I've settled on calling him Keith Hashimoto, part of the only Tenko family in Horizon, and his parents operating a year-round Halloween*-slash-used-book** store), I've come up with a couple of questions. If anyone could give me a hand, I'd very much appreciate it.
    * His dad is sure it'll take off!
** And his mom has their bases covered if it doesn't.

EDIT: Yeah, gonna spoiler those for the sake of space.

    Spoiler
    Show
    1) This being my first Chuubo's character, I'm trying to hew to the Shop Fox playbook from Fortitude: By the Docks of Big Lake as a base. That means I did a little more eying of the suggested Bonds for a Tenko magician and got a little... unsure that I fully understand Bonds. Jenna had put a little symbol to mark "the most useful options," one of which included a Bond I've been looking at: "People are really weird about the tail and ears sometimes."

I like it for looking fun and flavorful, but... This doesn't feel like it fits with things that you must, can't, or are driven to do, as the rules describe. It even seems to highlight the note about how it's not clear what a passive-voice Bond (like talking about what other people do) would really mean. The most value I can see would come from the third use of Bonds, where troublesome reactions to Keith's vulpine traits can help fill up the power of his wishing heart with determination Will or MP. I guess it could also apply to some intentions/miracles for making him hard to miss, extra noteworthy, or securing a reaction, I'm just not sure how helpful those would prove.

Perhaps I'm underestimating the value of the third option or the skill/miracle applications I named? Or I'm missing some more obvious application? Or a Bond representing a magical skill's ban is just... always relevant to uses with that skill*** (and maybe associated miracles)? Mainly I'm just interested in why this option would be pegged as so useful and how to get the most out of it. Thoughts may also reveal I've misunderstood something about Bonds, which'd be great, since then that could get cleared up.

*** Doubtful, but I figured I'd ask. My understanding is that one of the big advantages a Bond gives a magician is that magical skills automatically impose an Obstacle, so an applicable Bond can always add to the Intention level -- potentially zeroing the Obstacle out or even overpowering it.

    2) Still leaning toward Gatecrasher, but unsure what to adopt for his hidden world. Thoughts I've had...
    • A secret School club of student magicians whose experiments, interactions, and schemes sometimes get out of hand?
    • A group of magic-wielding kid heroes who deal with some troublesome supernatural stuff that crops up in Horizon?
    • Spectral patrons/mentors throwing tests and trials at their protégés is apparently more common than you'd think?

Also, wanted to raise a potential concern on that Arc. I was looking for examples and stumbled on FrivYeti's assessment from his Leonardo Project: "On the one hand, it’s remarkably versatile, decently medium in its exact power, and allows for a lot of cool work. On the other hand, it cuts a player off from the rest of the group and has a way of taking over the storyline."

I can see the sort of narrative tendency/inertia he's talking about. So I wanted to float it, see if there's any concern about the Arc winding up doing that. Popping up as prominent at appropriate times or mingling organically with other parts of the game would be perfect, but having it dominate or do a number on inter-PC interactions would be less awesome. I could always find a different Arc.

Sheet drafted! Please let me know if you spot any errors or missing elements, or if I've misinterpreted the crunch/fluff anywhere! I'm open to recommendations too~

    In particular:
    - I hope the way I used Spiritual is okay. Sentimental seemed too tied to the objects over the act of sewing, and we've already got Gatecrasher representation. Reality Syndrome struck me as a much more deliberate act, where I wanted Zaha's innocence and mild ignorance to define her miracles.
    - I'm really not sure if I did Perks properly at all. At the very least, there's design space around the details of the sewing kit.
    - How is MP calculated after the base pool of 5?

If the party is more or less stable now, anyone want to see about possible Connections?

    Spoiler: Zaharina Enbi

    Spoiler: Picture
    Show

    Academics: Passable
    Athletics: Endearing
    Blood Type: AB+
Favourite Food: Stuffed roasted rabbit (the flavor reminds her of home, and seeing the string used to tie it up gives her an inexplicable sense of comfort)

    Will: 8
    Miraculous Will: 3
    MP: 5?

    Skills
    Seamstress 4
    Shine 2
Facade 2 (forcing herself to appear or act in ways that conflict with her inner feelings)

Arcs: Spiritual 3 ("the Threads that Connect People")
Current Arc: Becoming Somebody 0 (Truth: a talented seamstress | Failing: terrified of change | Role: mender of broken hearts)

    Emotion XP: Thumbs-up

Basic Quest: Sewing (there's always something to make or mend, if only to keep my hands busy)

    Perks:
Bond 2: "I must bind my world together, lest it fall apart around me."
Affliction 3: "I must have a needle and thread nearby."
Tool +1: A pocketbook-sized sewing kit received as a gift. Something feels a little... unsettling about it.
    Connection 1: the School

    Powers:
Frantic - Zaha is easily frightened, but when pushed to the point where she starts acting how she should act instead of thinking how she should act, a brave and resourceful girl emerges. She'd never believe you if you told her about it afterward.
<Take the (Be in) Trouble Action to earn 1 MP +1 for each Group XP earned thereby>

Elemental Warning - Zaharina is prone to a sense of impending dread whenever the bonds between many people are threatened at once... or something like that. Probably just residual trauma, right?

Illusions - It takes little enough effort to superficially tie things together. Strangers might find a sense of affinity or familiarity with each other, or places could seem linked by a common thread. Of course, the notion fades the moment someone starts to question where it came from, because it didn't.
    Spoiler: Cost
    Show
0 MP—use this power (every few hours)
1 MP—use this power a second or later time in a handful of hours

Spirit-Sense//Spirit-Speaker - Zaharina has an uncanny ability to sense the connections between people, as if seeing invisible threads between them. Some are obvious even to the casual observer, like the young couple holding hands in the halls; others can be incredibly obscure, like the fact that her one teacher's nephew was her father's best friend's accountant, whom she met once as a toddler and sometimes passes on the street.
The more distant the connection, the fainter the thread, while color indicates something of the relationship's nature. Sometimes, if she asks nicely and the conditions are present, Zaha can convince a relationship to change in some way by speaking to it directly (nevermind the people on either end of the string).

Spirit Boost - From time to time, Zaha can muster the power to dramatically strengthen the bonds between people, pulling them closer and making them shine more brightly than they ever imagined.
But she can't hold them like that forever. What happens after the miracle fades is up to fate and the individuals involved.
    Spoiler: Cost
    Show
    0 MP—boost your element 1/chapter
1 MP—use this power a second or later time this chapter
2 MP—use this power a second or later time in a handful of hours

Divine Mantle - Zaharina can make herself a nexus for all the threads of fate in an area, plucking and weaving them into a web of her own design. She tries to avoid doing this as it kind of freaks her out. Interacting with relationships individually is one thing, but just manipulating all of them at once solely to further her own ends? How insensitive and reckless!
    Spoiler: Cost
    Show
Spend 1-3 MP to gain miraculous Edge equal to the MP spent for the rest of the scene

Spirit-Shaper - When she really gets in the zone, Zaha can animate physical threads and strings as the avatars of her Element, directed by her will.
    Spoiler: Cost
    Show
1 MP—invoke or control your element (individual/house scale)
2 MP—invoke or control your element (neighborhood scale)

Summons - "Come to think of it, I always seem to have just the right thread with me, even when I'm sure I left it at home..."
    Spoiler: Cost
    Show
1 MP—summon a small instance of your Element from afar
2 MP—invoke this power a second or later time within a handful of hours

Chastise - The "scissors" to her "needle and thread," except not nearly as innocuous as their already-questionable physical counterpart. In Zaha's eyes, dissolving a bond is the most terrible thing she could do, and would rather murder than use this power again.
    Spoiler: Cost
    Show
2 MP—dissolve some of your element
4 MP—use this power a second or later time in a handful of hours

Secret Wisdom - Like an extension of Spirit-Sense, Zaha can use this power to discern a bit more about the world from how it reflects in the bonds between people, or to delve deeper into the details of a particular connection.
    Spoiler: Cost
    Show
2 MP—know a little more than you should
4 MP—use this power a second or later time in a handful of hours

Destiny Shaper - The power to completely redo the stitching on the fabric of a person's social network, or change the way a whole group interacts with itself. As soon as she realized it, Zaha attempted to use it on her own family, only to find herself restrained by her own fears and doubts. She hesitates to try it again, on account of the unknowable consequences and a paralyzing fear of what might be lost in the process, even knowing that everything she desired is now only a modest wish away.
    Spoiler: Cost
    Show
4 MP—move your Element around inconspicuously, or shape its destiny

Wages of Sin - With new awareness of her own basic fear came the ability to perceive the same kinds of feelings in others. That boy who cannot confess his feelings for fear of losing a friendship, those lovers who cannot express their disgust with one another, that old man who refuses to take a step toward his dream... Many feel it better to hold tightly to a reliable unhappiness than to chance upon the terrible unknown.
    Spoiler: Cost
    Show
1 MP at Arc 0—see the influence of a Failing

Shared Experience - Just as there are others who share in Zaharina's failings, too are there people who wish to mend the broken and connect the lonely, to draw the world closer together. The realization gives her strength, even if she isn't sure what to do with it yet.
    Spoiler: Cost
    Show
2 MP at Arc 0—understand the part of a person that shares/
    resembles your Role

    Spoiler: Background
    Show
Zaharina was the third of four siblings born into a family of tailors, and learned the profession from a young age. Her mother specialized in fashion design while her father managed the business side; her eldest sister studied both while acting as head seamstress, with everyone else pitching in on production as work demanded. Her only brother, the second sibling, crafted accessories of wood and metal to go with their mother's outfits; the youngest sister was a model and something like the store's mascot.
Young Zaha was the jack of all trades, quietly flitting about to wherever she was needed, somehow being both nearly invisible and the one who united the family even as they delved deeper into their respective arts. Along the way she picked up a number of useful talents for dealing with fibers and people - and because Town is Town, a few more miraculous talents picked up her. The development was so natural and unobserved that she never really learned to distinguish between sewing fabric together and sewing people together, even as she grew more skilled at both.

    Those were the happy days.

None could say what sparked it or when it really started. Mounting stress from the failing business and financial strain? Madness, perhaps, from working with toxic materials too long? Or maybe something more natural and human, the inevitable twisting decay of unsettled hearts? The Enbi family descended into a spiral of jealousy and betrayal, culminating in Zaha's 14th year when she was never called home from School for the winter holiday - or rather, no longer had a home to return to.

She desperately wished to become a skilled enough seamstress to stitch her family back together, to return them to the blissful days of her earliest memories. That singular goal carried her onward, in spite of everything the School had in store for a mediocre scholar and pitiful athlete.

She never did get past her habit of sewing during every unoccupied moment, nor quite forget the things she had, lost, singularly desires back, and fears to lose again.

I think her Curse manifests as the living world slowly 'forgetting' about her - at low levels, her actions get misattributed to other people, although people will remember she exists. At higher levels, she starts to become unable to actually affect the living world when there are living witnesses, and people slowly start to forget she ever existed. At Sickness 5, she's (temporarily) ret-gone, and can only interact with the Ghost World.

Meanwhile, her Sanctuary is a sort of "Memory Realm", a small blank space where memories occasionally manifest, play out, and then fade away. Not always Naniko's memories, either. The realm is access through a door in any grave stone, tomb or memorial - even if it doesn't normally have a door. The exit, and the entrance anyone can use, is a memorial to an unknown girl who was killed in a tragic accident involving experimental clockwork robots.

Having given it some thought, I think a good candidate for Amaranth's starting Arc Quest would be The Object, centering around his pendant. Just for reference, I came up with a rough depiction of what the device on the pendant looks like:

As for Connections, I can maybe see one between Amaranth and Naniko; the two possibly gravitating towards each other as fellow amnesiac dead people.

Yeah that sounds pretty valid to me. Us amnesiac dead people have to stick together.
