Anyways, the main complaint about Luna's yo-yo depression is that she never actually "acts" depressed. Except for the rare situation when something went wrong for Luna, she never exhibits any signs of self-doubt or general depression. And when something does go wrong, she "shows" her depression by saying "I am depressed."

You can't just have your characters announce how they feel! That makes me feel angry!

This is why Luna comes off as an "attention whore" - in real life, if you saw someone how acted perfectly normal all of the time, but would occasionally angst about how they were all depressed all the time, you'd think the same thing.

I can guess why Luna is acting this way. Every time she mopes around Dominic showers her with affection. Why should she get better when all she has to do is be depressed to gain attention?

Oracle_Hunter already explained it - I wouldn't have a problem with her having low self-esteem and depression, in fact, it is hardly imaginable that she would not, after so many years living with these. The problem is that she doesn't actually have them for the most part, especially not when the plot calls for her to be brave (there is one strip somewhere where she actually starts thinking poorly of herself, and then realises that she is a great sorceress and flips to a perfect, confident opinion about herself). She does not suffer from low self-esteem, unless - and that's the most disgusting part about it - Mookie wants his self-insertion character to be able to patronize her.

Heh, fair enough Oracle Hunter, I'll partially agree. Now that I think about it, I can't think of a moment where despite her alleged negativity she didn't quickly overcome them, and rose to the occasion (except the recent "pep talk" to Jayden, but I'd rather forget that one). On the other hand I have known people who emotionally lived for the moment, and would be... satisfied if they were doing something productive, especially for other people, but whenever there would be a lull they'd immediatly fall back into the self doubting/hating thing, but agree to disagree eh?

Hmm, I can't think of many examples where she had to face her fears in a mundane non reality destroying situation (the pep talk maybe, but... that one was just dumb in many ways). I just chalked up her actions in those dire situations as a standard "rise to the occasion" trope, but I suppose it can be irritating, makes her character seem 2D, and ya makes her depression seem trivial.

Still something minor like... giving a lecture and having her students mock her teaching methods would probably drive her crying into the nearest sympathetic arms. Maybe the resident "love me rapist" she-orc?

You know, I just did a quick scan, and I think there's a shot of every other character with hands (and some without) reading something, sometime, except for Jayden.

"I want to blow up my ex-girlfriend's church in front of her! AHA!" takes on a whole new meaning if you realize this arc is about Mookie's breakup. Somebody alert the FBI.
