...anyway, if the thread you opened had a limited enough scope that it could be fulfilled, then you can ask a mod to close it, although I don't think they have to do it. A typical example from the OotS subforum is when someone asks "Does the Giant XXXXX?", there are a few answers, then the Giant answers "Yes, I XXXXX", and then the thread is locked because the question was fully and definitely answered.

The advantage of not closing threads is that it allows us to quote from them, like these quotes from 2003 (when the Forum was young):

Hmm, I wonder if the :P smiley works.

I would say there is a 60% chance that is an issue with your browser settings. Try checking out your default fonts and seeing if screwing with them changes the text size.

Then again, I'm no expert, so if RawBearNYC (my tech guy) comes and tells you something different, listen to him. We may be able to do something on our end after all.

You can do that anyway by filling in the post count manually. For example, I nab the p=22235746 part of the URL of this post, grab a part of the post, say "I hate sports", and then put QUOTE=@@@USERNAME@@@;@@@p-number@@@, for example QUOTE=The Eye;22235746, and watch the magic happen:

What's with the "I hate sports" being randomly added to the end of people's posts? I've been away for most of a week so I must have missed something (though I do hate sports, so naturally I'm curious).

    It's from the

And so many other threads that it has infected spread joy to.

This newer, happier you really doesn't fit with the curmudgeonly image you've so carefully cultivated over the years.

    But thanks all the same.

Yeah, there's something about discussions relating to gender and sex that causes threads to go off a cliff into rancor.

The Underdark as Australia sounds like a good time, talk about down-under eh?

I think it's because you always end up with a few people on the extremes and the others sort of fall against the side that said the most silly things at the moment of posting and then it degenerates. Add to that that exchanges from other recent threads are going to be taken into account by the more engaged posters which will make them seem vitriolic and unreasonable to people who were spared those psychodramas... IMO the best thing to do is not get involved, but that takes a lot of self control which I sometimes lack.

Per the forum rules, you aren't supposed to drag stuff between threads. Also, if things are getting out of hand, report offending parties and otherwise ignore them. And no, neither is easy to do. When I have previous opinions of posters, I try to either ignore them or keep any remarks centered on what they have actually said in the post I am replying to. It even works sometimes.
