    They were ready. Nice spells.

Now, there seems to be some kind of vapor going through the door in panel 7: I assume it's some spell effect, AND NOT a vampire in gaseous form seeping in, right?

    "Assistant Overnight Caretaker Acolyte".

There's a title that suggests that even cockroaches that wander into the temple are higher up in the hierarchy.

I'm guessing that the actual overnight caretaker was outside the temple when Greg arrived, the poor bastard.

Well, that could have gone better, wasted three spells, the warding, and probably a healing for Roy. But I don't think it will make much difference in the end.

From the positioning, it looks to me like puffs of steam from the breath of the two robe-wearing ones.

EDIT: Never mind, saw what you mean now. Probably one of the spells getting fired at Roy? It's hard to tell.

Level 1, with low wisdom, gives them just two spells per day (plus a few cantrips). Maybe they only prepare one combat spell, needing the rest for their duties (e.g. bless water).

Well, that was an effective volley of spells. I have a bad feeling about the survival rate of these new Dwarves, however.

2 spells actually, turn undead is a class feature. They were as prepared as they could be for undead at least; though they would be massacred by a single vampire most likely with searing light being the only really effective spell against them as turn undead would almost certainly be too weak to affect them and daylight doesn't count as daylight.

Searing Light and Daylight are both 3rd level Cleric spells so at least two of them should be 5th level minimum (IIRC). That also means they must have more spell slots (at least lower level), but given that it's night they might have spent most of theirs during the day already, or they may consider lower level spells too ineffective.

I'm guessing that apart from being funny this strip also establishes that there will be no one high level enough to offer any real combat assistance.

Searing Light and Daylight are 3rd level spells.

The "only prepared one combat spell" scenario is far more likely.

Yeah, spirited defense as it was, let's not count on any dwarves meaningfully contributing to this conflict.

Huh. I guess being trigger happy is a common trait for Thor's clerics. I guess Dorkun was following standard procedure when he kept blasting Roy and V in the early comics.

    Edit: Ninja'd.

Given how prepared they were to blast out what are probably their highest level spells in the first round of combat, I don't think it's likely they weren't expecting to go into combat. It's more likely that, having blasted out their highest spells and seeing Roy not greatly affected by it, they know they're boned and are trying to bluff their way out of the situation.

True (and my mistake about the turn undead), and agree they would be massacred on their own by Durkula & co. As bystanders in an OOTS vs evil undead battle those spells might have at least provided some distraction if well-timed (which is also unlikely given their bad timing here)… But like said, I doubt it will make much (if any) difference in the end, the responsible thing for the order is to get them out of the way before the battle.

Perfect use of the "Cool" emoji! Had Roy thought to wear his sunglasses at night, he would have been fine!

One question though. There is a blue patch just to the right of the second panel. Overspray, or a clue?

Roy's poor useless eyes! Also, Belkar comment for the win...low level acolytes would be speed bumps to team Vampire.

Level 1 or 2 Adepts will do this to you.

Yes, someone with NPC class levels got the drop on Roy. Again.

Yes I know, Adepts can't cast those spells, but eh, let me dream.
