Anything that makes a side feel shame rather than indignation shortens threads!

Why that's almost as bad as usefully answering someone question, or even worse treating differing opinions with respect (where's the sport in that?)!

I thought you were better than that.

Don't worry we can always save it with the tried-and-true tactic of having five people provide the same answer whenever one person asks a question.

    Ok, running is nice.

    But, back to OP's question...

...I usually read opening post (mostly to know what's the original question) and then watch as the intent to answer dissolves with some of the posters *helping* the OP understand his intent, some giving very interesting advice, some providing funny tangents, and some just answering the other posters, disregarding original question.

If I'm interested in the topic, I read it completely.

If I'm just interested in the debate, I identify and follow the "usual suspects" (e.g. Red Fel for maximum argumentative power, goto124 for jokes, 2D8HP for the advice from past/grognard jokes... I have second list for when I'm feeling "evil" but I won't put it here). And I often go quote-hunting (going from back, reading only the answers to quoted text). It's fun to piece together the information.

BTW, it's interesting how sometimes (the debate about social interaction systems) the helpful posts with good ideas get swamped with people arguing about which RPGD&D did it worse/better/how should the RPGD&D be played...

...and it's interesting to watch how people argue about two completely different things.
    MANDATORY ALL CAPS TEXT!

"Gosh 2D8HP, you are so very correct (and also good looking). Also I hate sports.".

Insert comment implying that I'm now lurking and watching this thread.

Insert animated gif indicating my anticipation of a certain rule being followed.

Make no actual comment with respect to the OP.

    Return to lurking.
My headache medicine has a little "Ex" inscribed on the pill. It's not a brand name; it's an indicator that it works inside an Anti-Magic Field.

Blue text means sarcasm. Purple text means evil. White text is invisible.

My signature got too big for its britches. So now it's over here!

What is this "Team" you speak of?

    THERE'S NO "I" IN T-E-A-M!

I though I was clear, do you think I'm exercising my thumbs to learn, teach, or convince???!!!
(Note: My many EXCLAMATION POINTS!!!!) (Also CAPS!!!)

A side "winning" is not important.

Personal ego gratification is where it's at!!!!
    (Need those points)

    Sharing glory with a team?

That's just crazy talk, or... bolshevism!!!

Almost as bad as sarcasm I tell you.

At least some people get it.

I was thinking that this entire time, lol. There are so many replies to so many threads here!

And yes, I did just read only the OP and ignore everyone else.

The denizens of this forum have made it their mission to ironically make this a long thread; from your post it looks like they're on the road to success.

    No hard feelings, denizens.
