My less than a quarter of a century of experience estimation is that when one lives day to day (work week of the average person), the focus is all on the short term, stretching it out.

Essentially, kale is supposed to be good for you--high in fiber, a few important vitamins and minerals, particularly manganese I think. That's why a lot of people who dislike it eat it anyway. I'm not one of those people--it's not one of my favorite tasting greens, but I don't particularly dislike it.

In terms of it's popularity, I'm not sure why it became such a fad. Maybe for those whose tastes buds don't agree with kale, most things with similar nutritional value are equally bad-tasting, if not worse? Maybe it's got a good ratio of nutrition to calories and fat? Maybe the kale industry has a great marketing team?

This is the answer. Kale is the one of the more recent recipients of the (meaningless marketspeak) "superfood" moniker and is considered to be extremely healthful.

That's part of it, but there's also just trends in food. Kale is familiar enough to be easy to cook with (if you're familiar with spinach and lettuce you're basically covered), while also different enough to be novel. It's similar to quinoa (standard cereal grain, no harder to cook with than barley or rice), including the responses it gets of both people buying great deals of it and some weirdly hostile response about how it's just so weird, despite being thoroughly ordinary food.

    It´s also good for detox.

In the northern German regions, kale is also a very traditional winter food. You prepare it with a lot of pork fat and simmer it along with some special mince meat based sausages and potatoes.

Well one difference is that it tastes good to me, and it isn't like lettuce, which is cruncy water.

I doubt it's much personal wisdom, and more the fact that some issues are more easily examined on the sidelines than when one is in the muddle.

Before kale suddenly became popular, the #1 consumer of kale was Pizza Hut, who used it as a decoration for their salad bars.

I agree with the fact that iceberg lettuce is entirely too common. However the salads I enjoy the most are also usually spinach salads, so my bias is against lettuce based salads in general.

Butter/Boston/Bibb lettuce (technically these are different varieties, but they're so similar as to be nearly indistinguishable and are sold as such under whatever name the grocer feels like putting on the sign) is pretty similar to baby spinach leaf in my taste. If you like salads with mature spinach I don't think there's any lettuce that is much like that.

We used it as plate garnish at Applebee's as well. I distinctly remember poking fun at a friend who absent-mindedly decided to eat it because "Dude, that's garnish, not food!"

Schatz, flavor is an even mix of (sliced) heritage tomatoes, cucumber, red onions and fresh basil, with a dressing of olive oil, red and white wine vinegar, fresh citrus juice, pressed garlic, sugar, salt and black pepper, topped with diced and roasted cabana bread. Below that, we don't need to talk.

    Tomatoes, olives and dressing.

More ingredients than that provide diminishing returns.

#1: Residual sexist assumption that the lady in question would have a handbag, while the guy wouldn't. Therefore, pockets more needed. Plus, another assumption ladies always want to look good, and big pockets = bulges of stuff in them = bad. Though, I've increasingly been done by trousers which lacked proper pockets; even by ones like cargos [which are supposed to have decent pockets]. One of the downsides of internet shopping...

#2: To stop spambots from merely joining and posting spam links everywhere. The 10-post limitation is there in the hope bot will get noticed before that and be removed.
