I mean, if we're assuming Gold Elementals are going to protect that delicious inflation-causing gold, then you'll get a... Carbon Elemental protecting those diamonds.

Hopefully those Carbon Elementals are actually diamond-hard and not, like, graphite-hard.

Even though Diamond is hard, its also quite brittle, which is why we don't have things like indestructible diamond shields being thrown about by patriotically clad members of the military. A carbon elemental might be able to hit like a truck, but it sure isn't going to be taking any punches.

It's cool, though. Carbon elementals bond with things like you wouldn't believe, so they have a vast network of friends that could help them.

What happens to a diamond used up in a spell?
    Where does it go?

It turns to ash. Or disintigrates. Or gets turned into magical energy to help create the spell effect. Or whatever you want to happen such that you have no access to it anymore.

    Hm, too bad.
I thought maybe it went to Elemental Plane of Earth or Astral Sea or whatever.
My plan was to summon a Diamond Elemental and convince it to be used in a spell voluntarily, but even Haley's Bluff won't do that if diamond just gets destroyed.

So that's why I didn't get invited back when I had my wizard give up magic research to become a commodities trader.

Depends on the form of carbon, yeah? Maybe the elemental is made of bucky balls or nanotubes.

Technically, you don't have to convince the elemental so much as you just have to convince your DM to make it work that way.

Well the other thing is, in the RAW IIRC it's not Diamonds. It's Diamond DUST. So you'd have to smash it into little pieces already.

Which de-summons elementals even if you could convince it to go along with the plan.

Maybe if you could sneak attack them over and over with a hammer.

Pretty sure that those parts disappear too. Planar Binding could work though - at least one handbook for playing a necromancy-focused character in 3.5 mentions this combined with a bunch of magic traps to ensure a good supply of outsider corpses. Same principle, really.

Edit: Oh yeah, and elementals are immune to critical hits, and thus sneak attacks.

Given that there is a Pseudo-Elemental Plane of Ranch Dressing, I'm guessing that's the Plane of Gold rather than the Plane of Earth.

I don't think so? At the vrey least it is the Plane of Metal, looking at the background population.

Well, Tarquin managed to make food out of phoenix, so I guess sufficiently evil party could still use diamond elemental for that...

Hm, what if one polymorphed a regular troll into a diamond elemental? Beat it to unconsciousness, tie it up, polymorph, break an arm off, use for spell, dispel polymorph, wait for it to regenerate the arm, rinse & repeat.
Could also use a kobold prisoner with a ring of regeneration for same, though Enlarge Person would be needed to produce more diamond.
