League of Legends LXVIII: "MY PICK'EMS!" Part II: Who Didn't Get Out of Groups?

Welcome! I will be managing the thread this year.

You can sign up for League of Legends here. It's a free MOBA based on Defense of the Ancients.

If it sounds like we're speaking a foreign language in here, the glossary of LoL terms can help you with that.

We maintain lists of players, sorted by server. If you are not on these lists and would like to be, please post in the thread with the following information in bold: Server (if you don't know it, it's likely the region you're in, but it's worth checking anyway), your Forum Name, and your Summoner Name. It's also a good idea to go ahead and send me a PM with such information to ensure I see it.

If no reply's been made about adding you after a day or two, first check the lists to see if you've been added. If not, feel free to post again or PM me. Any incorrectly formatted posts may be overlooked.

    MUMBLE
    Download here!
There is a Mumble server for a few more months, playing host to a variety of games, including LoL. Everyone's moving to a Discord server soon, but you can find information about it through Mumble. Contact Ryomasa via PM if you have a question, I guess?
    Address: fish.mumbleboxes.com
    Port: 36003

The Admin and Moderators: Ryomasa, Manticoran, Vampire Pumpkin, Haunter, TFT, EternalMelon

    STREAMS
As best as I could tell, none of the previously listed links were to active League of Legends streamers. If anyone would like me to add people from the community here, let me know.

    GUIDES & CHAMPION OVERVIEWS
Sometimes people write guides and post them in this thread. Other times pro players write guides that people then post in this thread. They often end up here. With all of the updates to the game over the years, these may be somewhat dated, but a lot of the information is still useful.

Be warned. These guides are, by and large, outdated. Much of the information referenced in these guides has been made obsolete as a result of League's natural patch cycle and changes from Season to Season. Bah, "This Is Why We Don't Do Topical Titles" was superior.
I'm mostly here for Warframe and a tiny bit of RWBY.

Oh, we've always done topical titles. Activity has just dried up over the past year. This way is much more subtle shade at that fact. (Probably too subtle, but still.)

Edit: So I may curate the material in the first post. I already pulled all of the streamers, as none of them seem to be doing League stuff anymore. Does anyone have strong feelings about preserving the other categories (guides / videos)? I would be fine leaving the videos in just as a sort of time capsule (most of them are pretty amusing), but I'd probably rather pull all of the guides and just put in some informational links (na.op.gg, at the very least).

Didn't watch the games, but I'm guessing it's "f the meta, let's go ham". SKT has had very shaky early games, while Misfits were one of the stronger early game teams in Group Stage.

I caught the end of game 4 and it's sad that Misfits overdived that inhibitor turret; they were pretty close to closing that game out.

And I was getting really close to pointing out how appropriate the thread title would be again this year. SKT-MSF was a great series, though.

If you do have comments about the opening post stuff, please leave them soon. I'm not sure much of it is worth keeping in a welcome thread anymore.

I want to give Misfits some credit for their coaching, or shotcalling or something. They spent a whole year doing average at best and managed to figure out some aspect of the meta and the teams they were playing against well enough to make an extremely strong run all the way up to SKT.

Fanatic had two ways to win the 4th game. One was to win harder early, the other was to get a strong pick late.
The mistake they made early, imo, was not around the Shen, but rather in letting Corki roam too freely. I think it's just that Caps wasn't good enough at the Galio pick. He needed to do a better job pushing in Corki and then roaming first so that Fanatic could dive bot with four people repeatedly (they made it work once, but that wasn't enough). If you set Uzi far enough back on that Twitch and make Soraka underleveled and squishy, then they could have forced a Baron teamfight and won it.

Second problem was relying on Baron too much (and messing up the rift herald to some extent). I think baiting around baron was a mistake because they didn't have a fast take. If they'd set up and then pushed into an ambush in RNG's red jungle, they might have been able to land a solid pick on Twitch or Soraka and burst them, which wins a teamfight and then gives them baron. They were very uncreative though, imo, and wound up giving RNG 15 minutes of free farming time around baron to hit the Twitch late game fantasy before they finally fought.

Side note, they could have won the final fight even with all that. Shen managed an absolutely crucial last second block on Sejuani ult that likely would have killed Soraka really early in the fight otherwise and allowed Fanatic to push up, negate the elder dragon advantage and possibly threaten a tower with their baron minions.

Caps in general was pretty ineffective throughout the series. He had a good game on the Malzahar but I wasn't particularly impressed with his Taliyah play, sure he was bringing the damage but his ultimates were pretty terrible, when you lock in a Taliyah you need more than just damage.

Man Soaz was playing out of his MIND on that 3rd game though. Assassinating Letme in a literal 1v5 was ludicrous.

These games are so great, holy s***. I don't want to stay up but I don't want to go to sleep and I won't want to watch the VODs tomorrow. Ugh.

Taric-Singed-Jarvan was a brilliant front line for game 2. Enough to overwhelm the peel once Janna was banned. SO close, though.

When the Maokai jungle couldn't do a thing to half-health Tristana on the first gank, it was a sign of just how ineffectual this comp was going to be on the bottom half of the map. And then to opt into a losing bot lane duel?! They just took their entire team concept and drowned it at birth. Xiye must be sad about wasting that magnificent Jayce performance.

I don't understand giving over Kog'maw every game. Well, I can sort of understand it if you can build your comp against Kog'maw, which happened in game 2. But I especially don't understand banning Xayah over both Kog and Galio in game 5. Then building protect-the-AD around an AD that doesn't scale as well as Kog, in a lane that won't win early because of Galio. C9's turn for a self-own in the pick phase.

    Hey all!

I'm in the process of introducing my kid, at his own insistence, to LoL. He's the kind of bad that even "Wood Division Adventures" would be a step up, but then he's pretty young, and never played anything with remotely similar control schemes before. He's up to the point where he can get score lines like 0/1/5 vs beginner bots, and is quite proud of the games where he manages not to die, especially if he's up there auto-attacking the enemy Nexus when it goes down. Soraka's his main right now, which can be a challenge because he's yet to successfully use his W heal on me unless we're both standing still. Hopefully that gives you some insight into what I'm working with here.

So, for obvious reasons, I'm trying to find beginner guides on youtube. Shurelia's Zoning Tutorial from '09 is still the best I've found, because the others either throw a lot of gamer jargon ("cc", "tank", "dps") around, are profanity-laden, are dry as stale cardboard, talk too fast for him to really process what they're saying, or some combination of the above. Surely there's something better though, preferably post-map-rework so it looks more familiar.

What would you guys recommend for (free) ways to introduce him to respecting enemy zone control, last hitting, etc? How do I help turn my little dude into something other than a walking bloopers reel?

What I've found is that people, regardless of age, won't click with something that doesn't resonate with them. It doesn't help that most tutorials are either already out of date, or will be as soon as next month.

I would encourage him to try other champions to get more of a feel of a champ with more agency with their abilities. Specifically those champs that have a built-in bonus to get them involved with last hitting such as Annie, Pantheon, Cassiopeia, Gangplank. Then let them play, and explain things as needed. If you try to frontload a bunch of information, like zoning or ward jumping, it'll be too much.

You will probably be able to explain certain things better than a video could... from basic rules of thumb, like "autoattacking draws minion aggro, so use abilities instead", to asking them why they think they died here but didn't die over there. You will probably have to sit down next to them, in the practice tool, to explain the differences in certain unseen things, such as autoattack range, so they can see when you're on Caitlyn and they're on Ashe, and you're both shooting the same dummy.

Also, let them watch some of the well-edited streamers on Youtube. Redmercy, Dyrus, Brofresco, et cetera, will usually drilldown into whatever they've done wrong, as soon as they do something wrong, and launch in to what they should have done in that situation, without taking themselves too seriously. Less so on the full streams or worlds stuff - that requires an inside-baseball type of knowledge that will be completely overwhelming outside of the most basic objectives.

I second all of this. One of the best things for last-hitting for me was playing Annie and Nasus (depending on lane). It was admittedly a different "era" of League, but that more than anything taught me the value of CS. Carrot v. stick, if you will--they immediately reward you for doing what you're supposed to, rather than making you feel like a failure for not meeting a CS target.

As well, turning on quick cast with range indicators might help.

IMO it's better than just plain quick cast in all but extreme scenarios.

    How old is this kid?

Honestly, I understand the desire to want to play some tougher stuff. But if he’s steadily progressing (even slowly) and having fun supporting his old man. That sounds pretty great already. Show him some of the easier champions, if he picks out one he likes for whatever reason (maybe aesthetics maybe he wants to support to play with you more, maybe he just ends up finding last hitting boring) and talk to him as you play.

Making the kid watch videos and essentially do homework for a game seems counterproductive unless he’s actually asking to do it.

Says the guy who's never had a kid and has no intention of ever raising one, anyway.

I will second this as well, says the guy who has a kid. (Even if she's just over a year old.)

It sounds like if the Shurelia tutorial is usable (meaning the kid is old and cognizant enough to not just spam the shiny stuff but actually pay attention to things and try to learn strategy), then I think the best thing to do is just play together. Also try, and I know this is incredibly hard, but try not to showboat around while he's doing stuff. Just kind of hang out in a side lane last hitting.

I would not recommend Soraka though. It's weird to say, but she's high stress early because now he has to concentrate on you and not just on the game. Especially if the situation is that hand-eye coordination is lacking yet learning is on the table. Annie, as already noted, is great, as is Nasus because they're really easy to last hit with and reward you for doing so. They both also kind of reward just clicking all your buttons around the spot on the screen where the enemy champion is.

I'm kind of guessing that your kid hasn't played too many real time games generally though. Which is actually kind of odd. Usually, learning League assumes pretty competent hand-eye coordination from gaming in some other context (RTS, FPS, at least platformer) and then the challenge is processing the incredibly high quantity of information that most players have already internalized into muscle memory. But here, we've got a kid who you've described as capable of studying and learning, but having laughably bad hand-eye coordination and reflexes under pressure. So...maybe focus on training that. If he switches champions, practice fights with Annie and Nasus will help a lot, and then he can switch back to Soraka and learn to focus on you as a teammate instead of focusing on just enemies.

Also, like, try some other games and maybe even real life stuff like basketball, baseball, or target practice with a nerf gun. People do not start life with the ability to see something and then manipulate an external object to go where they are looking. Using a mouse to do that is a trained skill, but if the basic concept isn't very strong, doing it with literally anything will help.

I'd have him switch champions to somebody less complicated than Soraka. I'd recommend Sona - all of her basic abilities are auto-targeted and her auras do a good job of helping understand location and zone control, and you still have decent healing. Her ult is the only thing that actually needs to be targeted.

I use the same name in every game I ever play or forum I join (except the pretender on PSN that forced me to be RealOlinser). If you see an Olinser in a game or on a website, there's a high chance it's me, feel free to shoot me a message.

Well that’s hilarious and stupid. Isn’t PBE supposed to catch this kind of thing?

I thought Riot didn’t like things like assassins that can 100->0 enemies.

Fun fact. On the PBE they actually INCREASED the %max health damage from 2% to 3%. Because apparently they weren't paying attention.

This isn't even something that's hard to see. In the freaking patch notes '3% target's maximum health per 100 AP per half second'. Anybody with a quarter of a functioning brain could see how ludicrous this is if you just build AP. A relatively weak 6 item AP build of 600 AP means you are doing 18% max health PER HALF SECOND, or 36% max health PER SECOND on one ability. And that's not even talking about the 710 base damage you get on your Q from 600 AP.

In addition both your punch and Q have 0.9 AP ratios on them.

So assuming you land your punch and Q, with 600 AP that means a FLAT initial damage of 1470 damage from just those 2 abilities, followed by 36% of your target's health every second.

What monkey thought this was acceptable to go live? They need to be straight fired.

I mean... they still let Cho'gath run around stacking health... That's infinitely more of an issue.

Did you see the worlds clip of Huni one shotting a full hp Taliyah with Feast? Literally just Feast. The scream knocked off her banshee's veil and the rupture lands after she's dead.
