Slowly and cautiously, Rolda receives a sending stone and concentrates on it for a moment. The message she sends is: "Unknown foreign entities encountered. Can barely understand archaic common. Seems moderately advanced technology. Claimed former party are guests of honor, but must be lying."

The response: Attempt to locate team by any means possible. Diplomacy primary if possible, escape and evade protocols if not possible to extract team by diplomacy.

Rolda used a second stone to send: "Diplomatic Approach. Foreigners wish to take us to their lord several miles away. Smoke sighted, possible settlement. If no response in eight hours, send help."

Rolda said to the others as they spoke amongst themselves, "Right. We have three stones left.. They are requesting information on the environment around where we are going, as well as defensive structures. Any tactical information to help in case they need to send others after us. Keep the stones in your pockets.. or someplace else you can easily use them without being noticed. Send it as soon as you can."

"They could have easily captured the others and extracted their names. That doesn't mean the others are where they say.
This particular group might not even know their names. That test proves nothing. Our best option would be to play along, for now. I hope with the diplomatic approach, everyone has the best chance of coming out of this alive."

She says, keeping herself ready to follow along. She knew a spell that could help with the jailbreak when they got that, but otherwise she didn't know what to do. She was however going to be angry if this all turns out to be useless because they didn't confirm whether they were actually there or not.

Once the party deigns to follow the soldiers, who never actually introduce themselves and remain silent for the duration of the trip, it's easy enough to see where you're going. The path towards the source of the smoke is not well trodden and the snow from the storm last night makes for slower going than if the weather were fairer, but still significantly faster than being encumbered by a work team of horses dragging an enormous sled.

As the downward sloping path between two large foothills turns a corner, the source of the smoke is revealed. In a wide valley between smallish but still steep mountains, a settlement of several medium sized buildings around a central point in a more or less circular layout becomes visible. One of the buildings has a quite large chimney and is emitting the lion's share of smoke. Below, the sounds of clanging hammers, scraping stone, and shouts of attention echo off the rock. Leading out of the settlement is a moderately well kept gravel road that follows the much more forgiving contours of the valley towards the south. The building emitting the dense smoke is close to what appears to be a mine entrance. Presently a hulking figure (details indistinguishable save for its height and bulk) drags a sled with a cartload of something heavy towards the rear of the chimneyed building. People move hither and yon, most activity happening around the construction project at the center of the settlement.

Surrounded by a moderately high wall with a large gate (currently open) is a huge, ovoid building of some sort. Workers climb scaffolding and cranes deliver supplies. Currently hoisted towards the center is part of the outer shell of the building, itself some 15 feet wide. All told the thing must be nearly 200 feet tall, its tip rising nearly above the surrounding hills. If it weren't for the valley it's set in, it would be visible for miles.

Set a bit apart from the rest of the camp is a moderately sized manor, though its design oddly devoid of angles save for some few spots. Its exterior is mostly stone but significant parts of it are covered with a light green, glassy material that seems vaguely luminescent even from this distance. It too has a wall, though much less impressive that that around the construction site.

As you take it all in, your escorts continue to guide you down a meandering path that slopes down one edge of the valley, ending near the mine entrance.

Guardian followed along silently, trying to recall as much as he could about the journey while keeping a constant eye on their hosts for the slightest twitch of hostility. Being in readiness for multiple hours would have been tiring for most people, but Guardian was, of course, not most people, nor really’people’ at all.

As the path follows the curve of the mountain down towards the valley floor, the details of the settlement become more distinct. The buildings appear to be made of the same local stone as would be provided by the surrounding mountains, but the architecture is nearly devoid of hard angles. All the buildings have a flowing roundness to them and instead of being straight lines, are curved in their layout.

Nearly all the activity seems to be centered around the monstrous construction project at the center of the settlement. There are a smaller number of other people moving about, mainly near the mine, who appear to be engaged in menial physical tasks. By the time you have made it down into the valley, the large figure observed during your descent is on its way back towards the mine entrance, pulling an empty sledge behind him connected to a harness hooked to his chest for maximum leverage. The ogre's eyes appear vacant as he moves past you some dozen paces distant. In the center of his forehead is the same bizarre circular but jagged scarring you observed among the corpses at the yeti's cave.

While the ogre's thick fur protects it from the elements save for an oversized loincloth, the others moving about carrying baskets and buckets are all apparently human. Each wears the same drab clothing as the corpses from the cave, their eyes vacant and dull and their foreheads bearing ugly scars.

One such worker bearing a basket of coal towards the building effusing acrid smoke plods along seemingly blindly in a path that crosses the group's. As he approaches, those vacant eyes snap towards Guardian and lock there. His expression does not change, but is so enraptured with the odd man in the full-body armor that his foot catches a protruding stone and he stumbles to his knees directly in front of the Warforged, briefly falling against him as the coals spill to the ground.

One of the two shield-bearing soldiers that had been bringing up the rear of the party rushes forward, shouting something in his harsh sounding language. A gauntleted hand slaps the worker across the head as the soldier continues to shout what must be admonitions. The worker's skull rocks from the blow but his expression does not change. He simply begins collecting the coals and putting them back into the basket as quickly as he is able.

At the commotion, the leader stops and looks back to the accident. "Damnable Broken," he speaks loudly enough in byzantine Common. "Prithee leaveth this imbecile to his work. Come." A barked order in their native tongue sends the berating soldier back to the rear of the formation, but not without one more blow to the kneeling figure.

Rolda had a realization. "I see now. Those you call 'Broken' bear the mark upon their forehead..." she says, pointing just above her eyes.

She also turns back to the others to repeat this same gesture, though she points more erratically to her forehead with wide eyes, trying to communicate something.

When the man handed Guardian the piece of paper, his fist closed reflexively around it; it took a moment before he realized what it was. The fist remained balled up, and he began to raise it toward the man who had bumped into him before he chose not to slam the man's face with it as a symbol of distancing from the creature. Instead, he balled both fists as tightly as he could; it would take quite a feat of daring to wrest that paper from his grasp.

Guardian stared directly at Rolda, with those eternal unblinking eyes as she made her gestures; the mark on his own forehead began to glow and darken arhythmically, in an apparently disjointed pattern. "Assistance requested, master" he said, in the most monotone voice he could muster (which was, in fact, quite monotone).
