For fun hypothetical, specializations in the Playground
Inspired by the many topics of Maximum77.
In an alternate universe the Playground is collaborating on a big book (or Youtube series, or...) about a bunch of advanced scientific, societal or even artistic subjects. Each chapter, a few pages going as deep into the matter as a layperson audience allows, is written by someone here who is an actual expert on that subject. What kind of book could they write? In other words, which topic or topics do you know more about than even (other) professionals working in semi-related fields? Nothing is too crazy or normal, and nothing is too specialized, as long as you can explain what it is. Whether you do app design for surveys, selection of lightweight bicycle wheels, diet recommendations for top athletes, modeling of interactive subatomic particle models or playtesting of tabletop RPG's, if you're better at it (probably/as far as you know) than anyone you vaguely know that you didn't meet through the field itself, your alternate self is probably writing a chapter. Please share what it is here, let's see what kind of specialists we have here. (No need to be an international top expert with more citations than a traffic court, your chapter just needs to be able to teach 99% of people at least something new.)
Alternate me, to get the topic started, might be writing (even though he'd like a few more years of experience first) on drug release and delivery systems. When you have an active pharmaceutical ingredient (the part of a medicine that does all the actual medicine stuff) which works on a cell line or a mouse but not on a dog or a human, you might have a problem with getting the right dose in the right place for the right amount of time. I solve those problems.
P.S. Not that there's anything wrong with being more of a generalist, anyone who couldn't think of an answer. We need people who do big picture stuff as well, just maybe not for this hypothetical book.Last edited by Lvl 2 Expert; 2017-10-10 at 07:24 AM.

Re: For fun hypothetical, specializations in the Playground
I guess mine would be able how to incorporate more "problem-solving" work into online math classes and trying to get kids (and their parents) out of the mindset that math is about producing immediate answers to computational problems with clearly-defined steps and into the idea that you may have to spend some time thinking about which tools to use to solve a problem rather than being given directions.
I've yet to find anyone who's doing much writing about good ways to bring that kind of math pedagogy online, anyway, so it seems like I'm on my own to try to figure it out. (The stuff I find for working with this type of pedagogy tends to be structured around group work and formative feedback, both of which are really difficult in an asynchronous online format like I teach in.)

I've seen more of that sort of thing in computer programming, with places like Grok Learning. Maybe that's just because it's my area, or maybe programming is seen more as a problem solving task to begin with.

Re: For fun hypothetical, specializations in the Playground
I, being in high school, might write something about teaching. How to work with kids and how to teach kids that are exceptional or lagging in a certain area.
I don't actually know anything about teaching, but I know what I do and don't like that my teachers do, also I am part of a club at my local climbing gym, the club is for kids but I am one of the most experienced people there so I have been teaching some kids the ropes (both literally and figuratively)
one thing that I have found that really helps me and my friends to learn something is not being told it. How I like to learn stuff is read about it from a couple different sources, draw it out (like in bio the different intercellular cycles), answer some questions about it from different places, and then put it to the test (like myth-busters!). That is just me though, I think I might start a thread on how people learn the best... hmmm... I think I will, in a bitMuad'drin tia dar allende caba'drin rhiadem! Los Valdar Cuebiyari! Los! Hmm, probably about space exploration, some of the lesser known, cancelled or failed programs, and what the future could hold.

I can cover the culture, practice, and history of Karate, Go and Noh Theater in Japan, as a lens to examine the Japanese concept of an Art or Way.

Re: For fun hypothetical, specializations in the Playground
In an alternate universe, Meself is a cross-breed between Elon Musk and Tom Hiddleston, so I guess I will be founding this book. What?
Ok, on a serious note, in a universe I'm not the generalist I currently am; I guess I'm part of the top researching team to develop a new pedagogy utilizing game design techniques (which is something certain people been working for some years, with scarce success in a broad sense). It's something I been playing with in my head since I was in highschool, so that's probably it. The world reeeeeeeaaaaally needs an updated form of teaching for both kids and adults.
Also, last intensive course I took in Game Design I was informed my teacher was working with a group of specialists to make Game Design a standarized worl-approved Engineer career.
PS: Aren't we somewhat ripping off TED talks, btw? If so... I'm totally into itLast edited by Lord Joeltion; 2017-11-08 at 11:13 AM.

For a slightly more esoteric specialization, I could write chapters on the design, set-up and maintenance of either a freshwater or saltwater aquarium.
