I know why they require 10 characters minimum for posts, but it's still annoying on occasion.

digi, I realized that I had let K-M fall to the wayside.

For 5th feat, took EMT [Group Charm]. For 4th-level investigator magic talent, took Restore Soul. Never took an investigator talent at 3rd ... took Quick Study.

Updated sheet with "permanent" CHA bonus and its effects to all other things. +1/day A Quiet Word.

Also, did I totally drop the ball on treasure split??? I still only have a noble's outfit (100 gp jewelry), a large belt pouch, 3 gp, and masterwork quarterstaff and two daggers!

Well, to be fair, you were busy with a different character. And yeah, you are currently too poor; you are due 5,250 gp worth of gear (including what you have). Please figure out what you're going to spend before wesee combat, if you would.

I always feel confused by what I should do when there is open-ended action when I don't have anything to do. Is the GM looking for a "feel-good" response from everyone and won't budge until everyone says something? It's like that in the Way of the Wicked game I play in. Other times, a GM has an arbitrary time-limit for responses and just takes into account those who post by that time. Because pbp, I much prefer that, otherwise wasting bandwidth, but by posting "nothing to do" OOC, it might move things faster.

My gear comes to 1250, leaving me exactly 4K gp to spend.

I am going to drop 2.5K on a ring of sustenance and 750 gp on a wand of cure light wounds. This leaves me with 750 gp. 700 gp = 70 pp, and then 50 gp for the remainder.

During a period of increased haboobs (violent sandstorms), he was gifted the ring by a group of tribes with whom he had negotiated peace after he had organized a means by which they may best protect their water supplies. He was given the wand by a Sarenite adept in another tribe after solving a mystery that ended the reign of a serial (child) killer.

You forget; no Vancian magic; wands work differently in this system.

Y'know what? Keep it as a CLW wand. It's an alchemical item rather than a magical one as alchemy still uses Vancian for flavor effect.

OKay. Once you're done talking with Zayifid, Almah will task you with stopping this oncoming threat and you will have to travel to the Pale Mountain to face it. Where should I put the slider on Random Encounters here? Do you want to face several things on your way to the mountain, or only a few or none at all? Note that I have final say on what happens, but I want your input on what to do.

Medium-high, like a 7 out of 10 for me. Combat means loot/XP and noncombat encounters means world-building so I'm not seeing a downside.

I don't mind random encounters, and Chuckles pretty much nails it. The only problem is that this is pbp, and a random encounter that is a 45-minute sideshow at the table takes days to weeks pbp.

There's this whole "No Random Encounters" movement in some GMs. NL at "Improved Initiative" goes on and on about it at length. The whole thing about "needed XPs" drives some of the yes to REs to GMs who are focuse on the XP, but the same philosophy also puts forth the no-XP movement as well ... to only use milestones.

Thing is, some really great things come out of them. Just this past Monday during my Mummy's Mask campaign, a truly gratifying battle for GM and players alike was with a total random encounter. Of course, terrain played a big part. Random occurrence rolled, and the creature was a gearghost. When I tabbed it for quick reference along with all other random encounters possible, like the others I read it but didn't really give much thought to it.

So I gave a super-quick read and realized ... 9th-CL, AW, telekinesis. The encounter took place in a city neighborhood called Bargetown so they weren't walking on ground but a series of connected walkways with semi-permanently berthed barges and the like. It was brilliant. Even as one PC almost died (and was saved brilliantly by the little utilized ability of an Arcane Focus to allow for spontaneous casting of any known spell for a wizard) the second time he was catapulted 90' into the air only to fall, the players were laughing and hooting over such a strange creature. The lack of ground (for someone with tremorsense) ... the breaking of the walkway forcing swim checks ... two HTH-only bruisers having to do other things because the creature was flying ... even the gnome oracle using energy leap to rocket into the air to attack (and then falling 60' into the water) ... was such a rare, fun, cinematic, hysterical event. NOBODY could have planned for how perfect this RE was. NOT me, not the AP writer, it was grand.

True, this was at a table and the in-person joy is not the same. But in my halcyon days my entire campaign was built on REs which ... once a rationaled was figured for each and every ... a young GM's long-run campaign had been born.

No, I recognize that the concept of "finishing the story" in pbp is pointless. IF you do, great. This is a play we get to do while our lives tick by, so in the meantime, why not have fun? Why not engage with surprising events we did not expect? I like SW's mention of "world-building" and that is another oft o'er-looked aspect of REs. It's the same with set pieces. If they will add to the story and the fun, awesome. I happen to know that you (digi) ran a set piece adventure-within-an-adventure with the were-leopard's place. That's great. As long as something is not designed to be a resource drain, it is alright if it is but it is serving the story, the world-building, or even sometimes in more difficult campaigns and easier REs ... giving a chance for beleaguered heroes to feel like a king for once instead of the always-put-upon-heroes-on-the-run.

    Yes to REs.

I would rather the DM designs an interesting setpiece than just rolls a random encounter. Don't much care for random filler fights.

So I'm getting that you want to have some fights before you arrive at the mountain, but you want them to interesting on their own not "Encounter 1 is some eagles, encounter 2 is a Balor" oor whatnot. I think I can make that work. Are y'all ready to get started on the journey?

Is Knowledge martial a class skill, or do I have to trade one of my skills out?

He never went to any formalized fencing training, so it doesn't make sense that he would have points in it right now. The Knowledge skills he has make sense for him, his background, and his desired future. But if it is a class skill I might buy a rank or two in the future.
