It's the result of the light spell
They need it, since humans do not see well in the dark

That's not even remotely true, as 4th Edition merged low-light and darkvision into the same ability, and 5th Edition has kept it the same. It's really only in 3rd Edition and its spin-offs that Elves can't see in total darkness.
