Default Software suggestions for audio log

Hi all. I've been trying to make an audio log of my weekly d&d sessions (online via roll20) but audacity isn't cooperating. Does anyone have any suggestions for other software that I could try? I use a headset microphone that has done well in the past and I use Windows 7

By RAW, you have to stop playing with the guy.

Well, for a start, how is Audacity not co-operating?

Audacity will record everyone else's voice consistently at the same volume. For some reason it won't get my voice at the same volume and I have tried changing the settings to amplify my voice but it doesn't help much. My voice is always significantly quieter than everyone else. My microphone is at max volume, too.

Assuming everything is coming through the same microphone then I'd be looking at the microphone itself, not the software--Audacity isn't capable of distinguishing your voice and artificially reducing its volume, so maybe your microphone isn't picking up sounds from one direction as strongly as it is from the other?

Well, if that is the case, any idea how I could fix it? I'm no audiophile so I'm not familiar with more specific settings to tweak things.

I don't think it's anything to do with settings or software, as I said, I think it's a physical issue with the microphone itself. Is there a different mike you can swap in and try?

I have an older one. I will have to hunt it down to test it out

If they're playing over Roll20, it may be that only his voice is coming over his microphone and everyone else is remote and coming in through their own microphones via Roll20 (or whatever group voice chat program they're all using - I've never used Roll20 so I have no idea if it has integrated voice chat or not).

If that's the case, I'd start by asking your remote fellow players if your voice sound level seems quieter than other people's in general on their end. In that case, it's a probably a tech problem with your microphone, your microphone settings, or some mixer in your voice chat program having you on a lower volume setting than others.

If other people you're talking to over the mic find that your volume is the same as everyone else's on their end, then you'd want to look at how you're capturing your mic versus the rest of the audio - are you capturing the remote audio and your mic as separate streams? It's possible you need to adjust their relative volumes or the problem has something to do with how you have mic input going into your capture program in that case. Are you capturing your own stream from the program? It's possible it's doing some kind of processing to lower your local input in your local version of the output stream to try and avoid feedback scenarios (I have no idea if that's a thing, actually, but it sounds very convincing in my head as a thing that might be tried).

You might see if there's a way to get your capture program a sound feed that includes your audio mixed into the rest of the group as though your audio capture program were an additional remote player getting all of its sound through Roll20/your voice chat program rather than your personal sound feed to troubleshoot some of those ideas.

The other player's have said I don't sound quieter to them than anyone else. We use skype for voice. I will have to check out my settings when I get a chance, but I do think my voice and the rest are recorded separately. From what little I know about messing with settings, I have been unable to equalize the two. I will gather more specific information later, when I have a chance.

I asked around, and the only good suggestion I got was to create a dummy Skype account and log into it on a second computer, with a copy of Audacity recording on that computer. That dummy copy of Skype will hear everyone fine. You may have to mute the microphone on that copy if it's, say, a laptop with a built-in mic.

Huh. That sounds like it would work well. I haven't had an opportunity to test the above suggestions, but that is definitely a great option if the rest don't solve the issue.

It's at least easy to set up if you have a second computer or a virtual machine available for that purpose.

Someone just recommended a purpose-built application for recording Skype calls:

I'm glad someone I asked knew about it. I had no idea how to do this. Lol.
