    Default The Black Pit [IC]

Consciousness returns slowly, and with it comes pain and the memories of fire and terror. Everything is still hazy, the recent past but a jumble of images in which only one thing is clear; there was a battle - and you lost. Considering that you're still alive, bound in chains thick enough for a ship's anchor, and hanging from the ceiling, you must have been captured by your assailants... whoever they were.

Your surroundings are not encouraging; walls of black basalt form a long, slightly curved tunnel or cave wide enough for a small keep to fit inside, a ceiling almost vanishing in darkness overhead from which your chains spring, the oppressive gloom suffused by a red glow as if from red-hot iron. The heat would be unbearable to the average mortal, reducing them to dried out husks in seconds, but you are made of sterner stuff. Beyond just the chain that binds you, the air itself seems to press down on you as if it weighed as much as a mountain and was as thick as mud. In the distance, you can see other chains hanging from the ceiling, more prisoners dangling in mid-air.

But perhaps your situation isn't as dire as you first imagined. Contrary to all common wisdom regarding prisoners, you still retain all your equipment, your body has not been crippled, disabled, or magically bound, and beyond just a very tight, very thick chain holding you in place you seem to have been left unsecured and without supervision.

    What now?

Attempts to escape should be written as attempts as you don't know whether they'll succeed. Your characters are currently bound in a really heavy chain and with no effects applied to them, though there might be within area effects. The tunnel is 100 feet wide and high, with you hanging some 50 feet up.

A tall humanoid with grey rocky skin, wings and bestial features. It is somewhat feminine in shape and wearing a white tabard.

Strangely enough, the heavy chains have no fastening point and yet refuse to budge or loosen at all. Ranta's attempt at using one of her abilities fizzles with no effect... and suddenly the oppressive atmosphere of the vast chamber gets stronger tenfold around her. It is as if a malignant will seeks to crush her for daring to attempt to escape, sapping her strength until she's as weak as a kitten.

Cassandra wakes without a sound. Her black dress swirls around her pale form, seeming to defy gravity. She seems oddly peaceful for being suspended upside-down, her lips curved into a faint smile. She looks around the room as best she can without moving, analyzing her predicament. Somewhere behind her, she hears someone attempt to cast a spell, with no apparent effect. Undeterred, Cassandra shouts a few words in Aklo.

"Awaken, denizens of fear, for I have need of your abilities."

Neru-Immar hangs, quietly. His single visible eye glares out of his helmet, taking in the two women hanging near him. He is monstrous, far larger than most of the prisoners surrounding him, and is covered in a full suit of armor, pitted and scarred, but covered in imagery, while not clear what of, clearly suggested something horrifically alien, yet organic. He watches the two mages as they chant. Dismissive of their reliance on what he assumed to be magic, he begins testing the strength of the chains. He was not, at that instant, preoccupied with breaking them and escaping, as he did not know the extent of his predicament, but the extent to which his captor had prepared for his detainment interested him.

Cassandra's magic is stillborn, the spell fizzling without effect. Immediately upon its completion, the malign presence in the chamber seems to magnify tenfold, focusing its baleful attention on the summoner. It seems to squeeze not on the physical plane but on the spiritual, seeking to sap Cassandra's strength and leave her much weakened.

Neru-Immar's observations of the two bound women are unproductive. Whatever magic it is they used, it had no observable components; no materials, no incantation, no gestures. He suspects that it is some sort of innate power he'll need to identify from its effects instead of through his knowledge of arcane ritual. Except the magic seems to have no effect at all; unless it is something really subtle, whoever took all of you prisoner must have accounted for magical means of escape.
Which is why Neru-Immar tries with brute force. Unfortunately, no matter how much he pushes, not even a single link of the thick chain moves at all. It is as if they are anchored in place... which in retrospect is almost certainly the case. Neru-Immar dimly remembers a rather popular magical trinket in his youth, a rod that became immovable on command, even refusing to fall. It could hold up several tons and even a storm giant would only be able to move it slowly. What if this prison's creator used similar magic, on a larger scale. The chain is much larger than any rod, after all, and immovable rods are fairly cheap to begin with.

"Bleh..what died in my mouth" Immy says groggily as she comes to. She looks around at her surroundings, Thinking to herself *Where are we?* and then gets a sort of..introspective look to her.

Others might notice this seems to be an odd action for somebody who looks like she wrestles bears for breakfast and has wrinkles just starting on her face that makes it look like she spends more time frowning than smiling. Her armor seems a bit askew..almost like somebody else put her into it and showing a lot more skin than a fullplate ever should, especially one finely detailed with scaling like a dragon. Anybody looking her way will notice she has yellow eyes, and if their vision is good, a draconic look to them, Which fits because she gives off sort of a intimidating aura around her even though she's not really doing anything to cause it.

Pain... it was a familiar sensation for Radaya... and one she welcomed. It meant that she was alive after all. It meant that her heart continued to beat in her chest and her two lungs continued to breathe. Despite waking, however, Radaya would keep her eyes closed, pretending to still be out-cold as she felt cold, heavy chains wrapped around her body. Instead... she listened. Listened to the sounds of others waking up in what was obviously a jail. From the sounds of it, they attempted to call out to others... or more likely, cast a spell, to which Radaya felt was foolish. No captor would let their prizes cast magic with such ease, if at all. No, you needed to escape through other means...

And this is what the black haired female would do. Appearing like an oddly tall, and quite curvy human female, Radaya would call upon her years of experience and attempt to slip her body free of the chains that bound her. Relying on nothing but her nimble, agile body and the give of the chains that bound her. Hopefully without making too much noise whilst doing so... and even if she couldn't get her body free, at the very least Radaya hoped to get a single limb free from these chains.

Cassandra manages to resist the wave of weakness trying to seep into her every pore, but isn't in a better situation than before. The chain restricting her movement is still there, and it seems as if escaping via magic is unlikely - for now. Struggling to unfurl her wings, she finds out that she can't; the chain simply has no give. It just stays fixed, immovable, immutable, even though it does not seem to be tied or anchored - it doesn't even have a padlock! The effect is somehow familiar... maybe there's a spell of some sort that does something similar?

Immy realizes that her invocations are not active; more than twenty-four hours must have passed since her abduction. Considering what she saw happen to others that tried magic to get free, attempting to reactivate them might be unwise. Despite her prodigious strength, her bonds are not even creaking as she flexes, remaining entirely immovable as if her efforts were no more than an ant pushing against a mountain. There are two things she notices however; she's very familiar with how all her magic items look a little bit brighter, less natural than mundane gear, and all their aura of mystery seems faded, dim but not gone. Their passive functions are not impaired, but every bit of magic radiating from them seems to vanish in thin air. And the second thing is that her sword, still gleaming with that field of brilliant energy even if it is dimmer than normal, has gone halfway through the chain as if it didn't exist; its ability to ignore non-living matter works fine.

Ranta feels the wave of weakness flowing into her limbs, her body, waiting for something painful to happen and... nothing. Nothing happens at all. No pain, no crippling weakness; she's as strong and healthy as ever. So she attempts to get out of the chain again, and suddenly the weight of the world seems heavier, as if she's moving through syrup while carrying an enormous load. Any attempt to push against the chain is bereft of strength, any attempt to slip through it too clumsy, any effort to think of a way out or discover a weakness is smothered by a mental haze as if she drank the strongest dwarven liquor - an entire barrel of it. And as soon as she stops attempting to escape, the weakness, the haze, the clumsiness - they all vanish as if they'd never been. Whatever security measure hit her only seems to apply when she tries to escape - for now. There is no telling what other courses of action will make the curse - for what else it could be? - act up again.
    Spoiler: Ranta
    Show
She takes -8 to every roll or check having to do with prohibited actions. So far, that only includes trying to escape.

Radaya sees several other captives fail to escape with might and magic, inwardly wincing at their lack of subtlety. Pretending to still be unconscious, she slowly feels the oppressive atmosphere not focusing at her at all, as if she is no longer worth noticing. Having an almost supernatural instinct with all kinds of stealth and subterfuge, she is all but certain that she was being observed by a potentially hostile being, but now their attention has focused elsewhere. So she ever so slowly attempts to relax even further, not push at her bonds with force, but slip through them by skill alone. The immovable chains have no give, but her own body does. And while her first attempt does not quite succeed, she stretched enough to almost - but not quite - slip closer to freedom. Escaping seems to be within her ability then - at least as far as the chain is concerned. Speaking of which, her familiarity with magic items and all kinds of devices combined lets her notice that it is a magical device of some sort. Not just magically treated, or with a few spells or passive enhancements on it, but an active item... possibly one custom-made to hold prisoners securely.

Neru-Immar is silently contemplating his situation. Unlike most of those captured, he has patience; the wisdom to wait and see where others fail before he tries to act himself. It is said focus as well as his experience with both leadership and trying to oppress and terrify his enemies that he notices one detail others might miss; the heavy atmosphere, the apparently helpless situation, everyone having all their gear, powers, and health and yet being unable to use them, the darkness and uncertainty, the seeming invulnerability of everyone's bonds... every little detail about this entire chamber is about intimidating the captives. Not just scaring but daring them to try their best only to see they will not succeed, that they are within their captors' absolute control. And unless he is very much mistaken, their captors have to be watching them even though they are not present; nobody would set up such an elaborate stage without wanting to see the results. Not the kind of beings that would construct such a stage to begin with.

Hmmmm, this was interesting... an active magical item, designed to keep prisoners locked and secure... that in turn made it very likely that something at the very least was watching them. A guard perhaps? Or maybe a different magical device, searching for spells being cast and reacting to them by activating the chains to snuff the spell out... regardless of what that was however, Radaya knew that she would have to figure out the full layers of security if she was going to escape this place...

First things first through, Radaya was going to slip free of the chains. Starting with wiggling her right arm free, then covertly using this now freed limb to aid herself from slipping from the chains entirely. All the while doing her best to stay quiet and unnoticed, wishing to attract no attention at all, at least until she was free and opened her eyes as slits, looking around the room, searching for what else may guard her.

Cassandra's attempt to reveal what auras of magic surround her fails as the minor spell fizzles like her previous efforts. There is a sense of loss as the magic drains away, followed by a sense of anticipation. There is no magical punishment, no curse, not because her bindings did not respond but because there wasn't enough of a response... yet. Their reaction seems to be proportional to the magical efforts they disrupt... almost as if they're feeding on the aspiring escapee's magic to punish them. No, not almost; that's exactly what is happening. When enough magical power is gathered, the reprisal probably activates automatically.

Freeing even one arm seems almost impossible at first, but Radaya does not give up. Even against immovable bonds one can escape if they move themselves, contort their body and limbs in ways the binder did not expect. Slowly, skin scraping against bonds as solid as a mountain, the experienced rogue manages to slip one arm free... and suddenly, everything is all too easy. Where their immovability makes the bonds almost impossible to escape at first, the fact that they stay in place even with nothing to support them makes the process a lot simpler once that first step has been taken. In no time at all Radaya is free, the chain that bound her still locked in place with nobody inside.

The vast chamber itself remains silent despite one of the prisoners having slipped her bonds. There are no guards, no warden, no alarm, nothing. Only an empty room without windows or doors, with several other prisoners within...

For most people, freeing yourself from chains whilst you were hanging 50ft in the air would be a bit of an issue. Not just the entire freeing yourself from chains regard, but also the fact that it was a 50ft drop. For Radaya however, this was not an issue in the slightest. For as soon as she was confident she was free, she would drop, allowing gravity to pull her down towards the ground, and only when she was within 10ft of it would she call upon her elemental gifts, the power coursing through her blood that let her soar through the sky as if she had wings... and even then it would be for the briefest of moments, only enough to slow her fall so that she could land softly and silently onto the ground.

Still, the situation did not seem significantly improved than before. Radaya was free from her chains, yes, but she could see no windows or doors from which she could exit from... at the very least this dark chamber gave her plenty of locations, plenty of places for her to slink into the shadows and fade from view. Hiding not just from sight, but also more powerful senses that beings may have, that allowed them to detect others when sight may fail. From there, the matter was simple: Testing the walls and floor around her for a way out, a catch or a slip of air that indicated where a hidden door might be. If there wasn’t anything, Radaya would use her flight to shift her inspection upwards, to cover even more of the walls, and possibly even the roof. Radaya did not want to believe that the only way out was through magic... otherwise, this may be a jail from which she could not escape.

What might have passed for the corpse of a huge man completely wrapped in a faded gray funeral shroud finally stirred as sound and motion echoed through the chamber. Tattered tears and holes in the robe opened into inky blackness that had been still before, but now seemed to writhe endlessly as the form seemed to awaken, though aside from the strange squirming motion it remained mostly still.

Unused to unconsciousness in its new life, the creature awoke confused and scattered. Slowly, the Consumed pieced its will back together, bit by agonizing bit, until its millions of wriggling denizens once more fell into line. When it could turn its focus towards what had been seen and heard while it was reconstituting itself, it finally discovered its situation, assessing the surroundings and fellow prisoners through taste and touch, filtering the information on its worms' light receptors until it approximated sight as well.

It was bound with a simple chain? Unthinkable to bind the swarm ... and yet, when the Consumed began to disperse itself to escape its bonds, instead of its normal freedom it felt itself losing control over its worms as they left the boundary of its humanoid approximation of form. Something was extremely amiss, here. Another prisoner had escaped and fallen to the ground below; the Consumed was more than they could ever be. It flexed its will both through the swarm and through its mind as its worms writhed furiously, pushing against its bonds.

Okay, so while it almost certainly will not work, same as for the others, the Consumed does not know this and tries likewise to free itself with both brawn and psionics.

First it makes a Strength check (1d20+13)[30] to try and break its chains, likely making the same

Next it attempts to manifest a Null Psionics Field, spending 11 pp to do so, in the hopes of nullifying whatever magic is holding it there. Due to its Magic mantle, it treats Psionics and Magic as completely transparent even if this is not normally the case.

It will roll a preemptive Will save (1d20+33)[40], assuming the same thing happens as did to Cassandra and Ranta.

If the Null Psionics Field actually works, it will roll another Strength check (1d20+13)[31] to try and break its now non-magical chains.

Cassandra relaxes as her magic fizzles out of existence, contemplating her options. As she thinks, she hears a noise off to the side, and turns her head in time to see a tall woman slip out of her chains and hit the ground, trying to blend into the shadows. Cassandra tries to emulate her, focusing on becoming as small as possible.

Escape Artist, taking 20: 20+13 = 33. Seems like a DC 40 check. Any chance freedom of movement will give me a +7 bonus?
Otherwise, I can't think of anything to do besides attempt to cut my limbs off, fall to the ground, and reattach them with regeneration. But somehow that seems like a bad idea.
