    Default Hulu/Marvel's The Runaways

Didn't see a thread on this, so here we are.

Anybody else watching? I'm a big fan of the original comic run and some of the follow-up stuff, and so far the series is...decent.

I actually like a lot of the changes, particularly making the parents more of an entity in the series is at least in theory good (though the series is dragging a bit), though one in particular is troublesome and another change being hinted at is giving me frowns. Still, the casting seems spot on for everybody but Chase (everybody else looks like they practically stepped off the page except Molly and Chase, and Molly's understandable. They couldn't have dyed his hair blonde?), everybody's characterized well, and the acting is pretty good.

Biggest troublesome change that could ruin the series:

Spoiler: Slight spoiler for the original Runaways series
    Show
They seem to have significantly changed the Gibborim pact and what it's all about. That or the parents are rock stupid. Why are they suddenly squeamish about killing a girl after having killed a girl once a year for the last 25 or so years? For the sole purpose of killing everybody on the planet but themselves, no less. Why doesn't Jason Stein know how to properly dispose of a body? WTF is that transporter dealy that's seemingly so important to their ritual that it's...only now being used for the first time and doesn't work.

For that matter why the hell is it such an open cult? The Pride's whole deal was secrecy.

    And

Spoiler: Seriously huge spoiler for the original Runaways run
    Show

They seem to be hardcore going out of their way to make sure we all know Alex isn't the traitor this time. It's...kind of the core of his character and is the driving motivation behind all the seemingly bad decisions he makes as their leader. But he seems genuinely afraid of letting his dad know that he knows about their secret dealings, which makes it unlikely he's in on the Gibborim pact in this.

It'll probably end up being Karolina who's the traitor (if anyone) given what they're setting up but that's just...eh.

The other minor bits (aging up Molly, seemingly changing how the Staff of the One works, changing the Stein family's deal, killing off the Hayes'/Hernandez's, etc.) seem either understandable production changes (not wanting to work with an 11 year old, not wanting a prominent character to self-harm [their special effects budget]) or seem like they can add new facets to the story, but the two big ones are potentially make or break on the series.

I haven't read the books, except for their appearance in Civil War. Heard good things, though.

I've seen the first two episodes, and I'm quite liking the series. Cast is solid and likeable.

Is Jubilee one of the characters in this?
I saw a trailer, and some mix of hair style, dress, and somewhat-Asian appearance of one of the girls made me think Jubilee. I know pretty much nothing about Runaways, though, so don't know if it includes mutants or not.

Haven't seen it yet...but it's on my "Watch Next" list. Glad to hear a fan of the books is enjoying it.

No Jubilee is not going to be in this.

Each of the Runaways have some form of super power / special power but only one of the families is a family of mutants.

I have not read Runaways besides the cross overs of Runaways with other groups such as Young Avengers. Yet I am aware of them both in comics world and also outside the comic world with the fandom and so on.

What I heard it, the Runaways is supposed to be really good, good to the point that some fans will probably not be satisfied even if the tv show is really good. It is that style of series that can generate such a fanatical and passionate fans.

It is a series that takes place in Marvel main universe of 616, but these characters are kind of doing their own thing and it is kind of surprising that the higher ups in Marvel "just allowed" such a story to be written...what I am saying is that Marvel took a chance and allowed Brian K. Vaughan to create something completely separate from the other marvel comics, to just write and create, yet this writting takes place in the main universe.

The Runaways has a very passionate following yet it was not big of enough of a following that the comics could not survive as a monthly thing that took up space in comic book shops and so on. And thus the Runaways was canceled.

Yet when these monthly comics were assembled as trade collection paperbacks the sales were so good that they brought back. Only to be canceled again, only to be brought back, and it appears they are being to be brought back in 2017 under new writters.

Yet a tv show for the runaways has been optioned and in various stages of development since 2008, when the original comics came out in 2003 to 2008 for Vol 1 and Vol 2, and Vol 3 coming out in 2008 to 2009.

yesterday looked at the series of this series. I liked that the producers did something new. I really like that series about teenagers. Of course, some moments in the series are not fully developed, but I still liked it very much

Runaways was an all new team with all new characters.

The basic premise is that there are six families of supervillains who get together to make a deal with one of the various cosmic evils to be on the top of the pile when they come to claim Earth. Their children find out about the parents' shenanigans and run away to heroism and adventure.

Just watched the episodes that are currently out. As someone who enjoyed the comics, I also thoroughly enjoyed the series. I didn't have high hopes at the start, though I was proven wrong. There ARE some changes, but they all make sense. The acting is good, the writing is engaging, and I can definately respect giving more character time to the parents. If you have Hulu, definately worth a watch.
