"Come on girl. Show that swamp cat who it's messing with". Kratis pats his horse on the neck. Horse and rider circle behind the party, and gingerly step out into the mud. Buttercup rises up on her hind leg, whinnying loudly, and bringing her hooves down with a loud crack, spraying mud everywhere.

Re: Ad Hoc Hack&Slash IC
From the muck of the riverbed emerges the platonic ideal of a "drowned rat". Its fur is slick with what could be oil or blood, and its gaunt frame belies an unearthly power in its eyes. It wildly snaps at the sliepard as it appears, but misses by huge margin.
The same cannot be said for Francesca's blade, however, as it strikes true on the beast's flank. The wound proves not to be a shallow one.

Re: Ad Hoc Hack&Slash IC
Two days pass uneventfully. Only on the evening of the fourth day do the trees clear up, as the tributary you've been following merges with a deeper stream. On the fifth day you pass a crew of workers dredging the river bottom, and by mid-afternoon you can see the city itself.
From the angle you are approaching Don, you can clearly see the splendour of its acropolis. Part temple and part fortress, its white walls and angular design imposes a commanding presence for miles. One corner connects to an odd freestanding tower, the top of which is shrouded in magical darkness. The city wall abuts the river itself, and the gatehouse connects to a wooden bridge, which appears to be the only point one may cross without being drenched.
"Hold!" A guardsman calls out to you, still a fair distance from the gate. State your name and business!"
Spoiler: OOCSorry, was a bit busy on the weekend. Anyways, I'll be getting you a map of Don as well, as soon as it's done.

"An errand from the Lord of Misha? That's irregular," the guard says with a frown. "I'll need to inspect this package before you can enter. But if it's genuine, then you won't have to pay the toll at the inner gate."
As an aside, he continues "I've heard the solstice hunt in Left Bend was rather exciting this year. Many of the hunters have yet to return to Don."

"I wasn't there myself, of course, but you know how it gets with druids. Plenty of monsters, plenty of women, plenty of intoxicants that make it hard to tell between them..." The guard says with a grin. "But enough gossip, let me see this package."
You hand the lockbox that Harr gave you over to the guard. He gives it a thorough visual inspection, presumably checking for signs of forgery or eavesdropping. A junior guard hands him a polished black stone, which he waves over the lid. Previously invisible runes around the rim glow blue as the stone passes them.
The guard nods, satisfied, handing the package back.
"And which esteemed sir would this delivery be for?" the guard asks.

Re: Ad Hoc Hack&Slash IC
"Hm, all right." the guard acknowledges. It seems that the source of the package war far more surprising than the destination.
"Just a couple more things before Tim here can show you to the palace." The guard motions at his junior. "I haven't seen you before, so I take it you're wandering panthans? Leave it to ol' Harr to muster new mercs in the dullest of backwaters... Anyways, you'll probably want to check in at The Shieldwall; finest panthan house for a hundred leagues."
"And I'll need the rest of your names. Including that of the horse, if it has one."
Meanwhile, Kratis stares at the tower, the featureless, slightly tapering sides of which resemble nothing more than a giant obelisk. Though it stands several hundred yards beyond his usual range of darkvision, Kratis somehow gets the distinct feeling that something within the darkness is staring back.

Re: Ad Hoc Hack&Slash IC
The guard happens to notice Kratis' distraction. "Oh, don't mind the Sentinel. Supposed to keep the demons away, but nobody's ever seen it do a thing but look pretty. Then again, nobody's ever seen any demons around these parts, either..."
The junior guard, Tim was it, he guides you to your destination. Jerun's quartered in the palace, which is part of the acropolis, so the escort proves useful in getting past a pair of much more serious checkpoints. At the palace door another elderly man examines you intently for a minute. He asks a few questions about your magic items, but answers none in return.
Jerun is a lot more well-groomed than Harr was, his entire demeanour fitting the image of nobility much nicer. He opens your package by pricking his thumb with a pen and pressing the bloodied digit on an inconspicuous spot next to the lock. You aren't shown the contents except for a letter, which Jerun reads unamusedly. He reluctantly pays you a small bar of gold stamped with the image of a flame upon a hill, which you now recognize as the symbol of Misha. You are then curtly dismissed.
As you leave, he apologizes for his attitude, saying that it pains him to see the mind of his grandfather starting to slip, and be haunted by the ghosts of his past.
Quest Completed! +100 XP
With only a couple of hours left before sunset, the party only has a brief time to get acquainted with the city. The market and the Sentinel are both on a direct path between the Acropolis and the Shieldwall, so you can make a couple stops without slowing down much.
First, Fallyn successfully establishes a working relationship with Svengruul. In weapons and armor, he won't compete with the Steelworks, but almost anything else that's rare or forbidden he can get for the right price. He'll fence some things too, but only if he sees enough profit in it for him.
Second, Crowhurst gets a closer look at the Sentinel's foundation. Unfortunately, there's no magical auras conveniently revealing secret doors, and the darkness is higher up than his spell's range. However, there is instead a memorial to the loss of Urdon. An inscription in Common helpfully informs you that the Sentinel was a gift from King Mughal to the people of Don, which will reveal its glory in the time of greatest need. A mural depicts a giant of a man in spiked plate armor whose features are obscured by a blazing sun handing off some sort of token to a kneeling nobleman.
The training grounds aren't so hard to find. Situated along the eastern wall all the way from the market to the steelworks, there is enough room for hundreds of men to practice moving in formation there. The tavern you seek isn't so much attached to these training grounds as it is a part of them. Dozens of grizzled men, some in a guardsman's uniform, others clearly mercenaries, all congregate at an open-air bar. A man is handing out rations of black bread and vegetable slop, and though some others are carving a roast beast nearby, their glares make it clear this is a more private affair. In addition to the rooms and stables, there also appears to be a bathhouse, although there's no chimney to indicate that the water is heated.
True to its name, all the outer walls are decorated with hundreds of overlapping rectangular shields. Many of the more faded ones bear obvious clawmarks, and other signs of having served their function many times over.
To pay for your stay, you're directed to the quartermaster, another dwarf named... Bundre. She converts the bar of gold you were paid with into coins at no extra charge. Also, Buttercup doesn't cost anything unless she causes trouble.
Net change: +42gp
The sleeping quarters are rather spartan, though. All the guests are expected to sleep in only a few large, communal rooms; the design philosophy seems to be that this way, everyone can watch each other's backs, and nobody can pull off anything shady.

Re: Ad Hoc Hack&Slash IC
Eating solemnly and quietly, Francesca wandered through the streets of Don intermittently between silent prayer and contemplation. She thought of the tiny village she grew up in, of her brothers and sisters who never dreamed of living in such a place, and the ever roaring fire she had grown accustomed to calling home. Talking up the various mercenaries in the Shieldwall she found some company for the night and woke up the next day smiling.
It was a rather eery sight on the normally surly woman.
Cracking her knuckles and donning her armor and weapons she stepped out into the training grounds and began to challenge people.“I’m a Terrorist not an idiot.” - Me
