[IC] The Sheep on the Borderlands
The Sheep on the BorderlandsA D&D 5e Adventure DMed by Bounty Hunter
The summer sun shown brightly over the town of Gladstone warming roofs of thatch and shingles alike. To the east the forest pines swayed in the gentle breeze as if keeping time with some unheard song. Meanwhile in the west the rocky fingers of the mountains rose to the sky--waiting to cast their long shadows across the valley once the sun sank into the sea beyond them. Rain showers had passed through near a week before and so dried ruts scared the roads leading into town from the rolling fields of farmlands that surrounded it. Workers tended the fields, herders saw to their animals and travelers plodded along either coming or going--all of them thankful for the break in the weather. The town itself bustled with activity along nearly ever road; the markets hummed with a flurry of people, shopkeepers peddled their wares, and taverns filled with people eager to enjoy a good food, good drink, and good company.
It was just past the middle of the morning, in a few short hours folks would be breaking for lunch and to take reprieve from the warm sun. Still, there was much to be done today...I stream RPG sessions, campaign preparation, and world-building via my Twitch Channel and upload them to my Youtube Channel.

Re: [IC] The Sheep on the Borderlands
Torinn Vangdondalor
On this beautiful morning, Torinn was going down the road. There was a small garden where roses grew close to the road. Though the person living there didn't like stealing from his garden, he usually had to sleep at some moment. And this morning, Torinn woke up earlier than usual. Seven roses, he really wanted one, but one seemed... underwhelming. So he picked six, leaving one at the person door. Going toward the closest inn where one of his friend should be, he gave a rose to two lovely woman on the way and a little girl. It's from the little boy over there, he seemed to shy to approach you Of course, he saw the boy a couple of time in the last few weeks always looking at the girl.
He continued, until he reached a newly widowed woman who he gave one rose.
With one rose left, he hurried toward the inn. And rushed for his friend door, left the rose by the door and knocked, fleeing downstair to get ready for breakfast.
Spoiler: OOCDon't know who want to be in that room but anyway, come join Torinn, you've slept too long. Hungover perhaps?

Re: [IC] The Sheep on the Borderlands
The City Streets
One particular bit of curiousness on this fine morning was the sight of a dragonborn leisurely making his way through the streets with a handful of fine roses. Modran would be bothered of course when he woke to find the blooms had been stolen but that didn't seem to weight too heavily on Torinn's mind. The women giggled and chattered together after accepting their roses and the little girl's cheeks turned rosy red like the sun waking on a brisk winter's day. The widows thin lips seemed to tug upwards at the corner in the earliest showings of a smile before she simply gave a polite nod and went on in quiet contemplation.
Armed with a single rose, he arrives at the Twin Drakes--a squat, two-storied, stone building sat on the corner of to cobblestone roads. He heads upstairs past patrons and staff and places the final rose outside the third door on the left down the main hallway.I stream RPG sessions, campaign preparation, and world-building via my Twitch Channel and upload them to my Youtube Channel.

Re: [IC] The Sheep on the Borderlands
Saias Remes
There it was. Saias had been searching for the apparent leak in the shingled roof - most of his clients required only a casting when it came to fixing their small holes, chips, or similar, but this man seemed rather hurried and simply noted that water was dripping through at night. Oh, well. Time was not something Saias lacked today, as he had no other 'contracts' on the agenda, and so he took no hurry in digging out his wand. With a rather quick incantation, the small hole slowly closed itself and vanished.
Well, that was that. His last for the day. As Saias descended the ladder, ideas of what to do with the rest of his time began to circulate. Perhaps he'd walk around and see if anyone else needed assistance - with only one simple errand today, he was going to lose coin today, unfortunately.
After making it back to solid ground, he knocked on the same house's door three times, rather delicately. "Sir? I found and fixed the leak. It was in the back, but it should be all mended now."Last edited by Suicune; 2017-12-09 at 11:44 PM.

Re: [IC] The Sheep on the Borderlands
Alden Beckett
Alden is walking back into the village. He'd caught couple of nice, plumb rabbits, and was planning on making a stew out of them for lunch. Hopefully he could use the kitchen in the inn. The sword was currently quiet and satisfied, as Alden had used it to kill the rabbits. If Alden quieted his thoughts, he could almost hear something that sounded like humming coming from the sword.
On the way to the inn Alden passes Saias. He waves his and gives the wizard a broad smile. "Mornin'. I see you're already hard at work, eh? If you wanna save on lunch, I plan on making some rabbit stew later, and I don't think I could very well eat it all myself."

Steph Carnel
He wakes up begrudgingly at the sound of a door being knocked on.
"Uh, wh- that was a good dream! Who goes around knocking on others doors!" I say, going to the door in, well, night clothes.
Finding no one, he looks down to see the rose.
"Ooooh... a secret admirer! He-he!" dressing up fast, he goes down amd upom seeing Torinn goes join him.
"Some beautiful lady with smooth skin and eyes aflame of desire left me a rose~ did you happen to see anyone? Who fits this description, I mean"

Re: [IC] The Sheep on the Borderlands
The City Streets
The man opens the door shortly following Saias's knocks and steps outside to inspect the work--for all the good that would do from the viewpoint of standing in front of the house. "I hope so lad... we've still got quite a bit of summer left and who knows when another storm will come sweeping down like that last one." He spends a moment longer gazing up at the roof before turning to the wizard and beginning to fish though his pockets. "I suppose I owe you what was promised... dont spend it all in one place now eh?" He says with a dry laugh as he drops a few coins into the wizards hand and begins to make his way back inside.
The Twin Drakes
It wasn't the highpoint of business in the tavern--breakfast was done and lunch had some time yet to come--but there were still a few scattered patrons nursing their drinks and picking at their food between conversation. A pair of staff checked on tables from time to time and behind the counter a man cleaned and prepped for the busy evening ahead. The smells of frying eggs and smoked meats hang in the air along side a slight haze from the kitchen and the occasional puff of pipe smoke. "Get you anythin'?" A young man asks the table where Steph and Torinn sat.I stream RPG sessions, campaign preparation, and world-building via my Twitch Channel and upload them to my Youtube Channel.

Re: [IC] The Sheep on the Borderlands
Ruth
Ruth sighs to herself. Even by her standards, this work is ignominious. She walks down the main street, occasionally chanting a syllable of command, but usually staying silent. To those watching, the sorcerer presents a strange sight. Following her down the street are a pair of watery orbs almost as tall as a person. Both of these wobble gently, and one steams as it floats along at knee height.
Stopping by the door to a two story town-house, Ruth disappears along a side street. There is a pause, followed by the sound of swirling water, and she re-appears with neither orb in tow. Jingling a couple of coppers in her hand, Ruth wanders back down towards the inn, nodding to herself. She whistles tune not local to these parts as she walks, albeit somewhat tunelessly.
Don't have anything till tomorrow, do I? Got all the time in the world.Last edited by Mr. E; 2017-12-10 at 01:11 PM.

Torinn Vangdondalor
Torinn smile at his friend and wait a little to answer but end up dodging the question going to the inn-keeper. Some water for me if you would. I'll wait a little more in case our friends arrive. Better wait for company don't you think?
He goes back to Steph. Actually, I did see someone who went up with a rose and went back without one a minute after... I think the person skin was a smooth scally blue... not sure who it could be. He only chuckled trying to hold a laugh while not hurting his friend pride.
What were you up to last night to wake up so late? Should you have an admirer or did you had some side job without me?

"A smooth scaly sk- what th- YOU" he exclames, eyeing him faking anger.
"Well. I'm sorry, but I can't possibly see you that way, my deeeear friend~ my love's for the gentle gender only" Steph laughs along.
"It's just too beautiful to sleep~ and I bet the next one who comes in will be an admirer of me~" he tells him, looking to the entrance.

"Weell", Alden drawled, "Besides guttin' and cookin' up these, not really sure, though I wouldn't mind having something to keep my hands busy. Sounds like you finished yours already. With those spells of yours, I bet fixing one roof doesn't take a long while, eh?"
"I guess when your main skill set's hitting things with pointy metal stick, your career options will be kinda limited", Alden says and chuckles.

Ruth
Ruth wanders down the main street, taking in the sights and smells. She nods in greeting a passer-by, whom she recognises as her employer from yesterday, then continues on her way. Stopping outside the inn, she sees Alden and Saias coming down the street, and makes a waving gesture. 'That's the one I did a job with yesterday. Don't recognise the other though.'
She stops and waits for the other two to come up, nodding at them. "Mornin' all. Share a table with me?" Assuming they agree, Ruth leads the way inside the inn, setting course for a table by the window.

"Eh, work here is fast, but it doesn't pay too well. I'm sure you could find someone to hire your steel to, if you looked around enough. Certainly, that might pay more than a few copper coins. Failing that, of course, you could perhaps turn to hunting, as you seem to have done quite a good job of that today.

Alden nods along to Saias' comments. "Reckon I'll do something of the sort. Have to put the word out, see if anyone's looking for sellswords."
"Mornin'", Alden responds. "Yeah, I can stew by myself. You know what they say about too many cooks and spoilin'."
After they enter the inn, Alden goes to the owner to inquire about using the inn's kitchen.Last edited by Majin; 2017-12-10 at 04:20 PM.

Re: [IC] The Sheep on the Borderlands
Ruth nods, settling back into a chair. She rolls her shoulders around, then leans back into the sun, making a small sound of satisfaction.
"So, uh, who's your friend? Think I've seen him around town a couple of times." Shrugging, she looks at the other from over the table, then round the inn, noting the lack of other customers excluding herself and the two at a nearby table. "Never said hello, though.
Worth changing that, I presume?"

Re: [IC] The Sheep on the Borderlands
The Twin Drakes
Steph, Torinn and any that wish to join them will find there is plenty of room at the large common area table of the tavern. A handful of townsfolk and travelers sit scattered among the other floor tables or booths along the wall. After a few moments the staff will return and ask if anything can be fetched for the table, will explain the menu, and answer any questions about prices. Business as usual continues on around you without taking much notice it doesn't seem too uncommon that adventurers such as yourself meet here before setting out to do...whatever it is adventurers do these days.
The barkeep will raise an eyebrow at Alden's request and glance to the bouquet of rabbits in his hand. "I've got a business to run here mate; can't just be letting folks in from the streets use the kitchens for their own usin's. What would people think if they saw?" He glares out from beneath bushy eyebrows at fellow making the request and sucks at the bottom of his mustache habitually. He's clearly not thrilled about the idea, yet he never did actually say 'no'.

Alden Beckett
"Weell... That's fair and all, and I can't really tell what people think of things, takes a smarter man than me to know things of that sort. But seein' as I'm a patron here, I don't rightly think I'm just any other bum from the street. And you know, I'll be cooking these in any case, so it's not like you'll be missing any coin from me. In fact, if I can cook 'em here, I might just buy an ale or two to wash the stuff down. And to top it all, that fellow over there", Alden points over his shoulder towards Saias, "Will fix any small broken bit you've got here, in heartbeat, free of charge. Don't offers get any better than that."
Spoiler: OOCI did mean that the inn would be the one Alden was staying in, though to be fair I didn't specify that.

Re: [IC] The Sheep on the Borderlands
Alastair Lachlaman
Alastair paused from his sketching to close his eyes and drink in the sun's rays. He had purchased a collection of short stories before leaving Redcliffe for Stravenport, and the night before had finished one about a huntsman that lost his way in the mountains. In time, the man became a spirit, doomed to wander the cliffs and valleys in the range. The story inspired a curiosity in Alastair, so this morning he found himself out in the field, sketching a drawing of the mountains west of Gladstone.
Opening his eyes, he takes notice of the time and rolls up his sheet of parchment. Packing his things, he takes another long look at the mountains, Great things are done when men and mountains meet; This is not done by jostling in the street, he says, quoting a line from the short story. Perhaps one day, I can retire from jostling. If only for a moment...
He leaves the meadow and heads back to the town proper, looking to meet the others at the tavern.Castlevania II: Dracula's Curse

Re: [IC] The Sheep on the Borderlands
The City Streets
As Alastair makes his way through town he passes busy people jostling along the streets and going about their days; some give a small nod or feign a smile but most ignore him completely. The sound of boots and hooves upon cobbles mixes with the dull rabble of chatter as he approaches the corner where the Twin Drakes sat. The wide wooden sign marked the building well--carved and painted with a pair of drakes wrapping either side of a foaming tankard--despite the need for a fresh coat of colors. Just before he reaches the door however, the half-orc notices the strangest thing: a sheep hurriedly runs along from the road to the east and sprints for the tavern door before vanishing inside.
The Twin Drakes
The barkeep wipes his hands on his apron and leans past Alden to look upon Saias but only manages a glimpse before Torinn steps in between him and the intended target. He holds a calloused finger up in earnest politeness toward the man and his rabbits to hear what the dragonborn might have to say. Before an answer can be formed for either of you though a ruckus interrupts the entire tavern: the door bursts open and a full-grown sheep sprints in. The thing seems hurried and scared and bumps into chairs and tables alike as it rushes through the room wildly. Patrons hoot and holler and some even scramble from their chairs adding the sound of chair legs sliding upon the floorboards to the den of stomping hooves, clanging sheep bell, and yelling customers.
The sheep itself seems to have something in its mouth but its hard to tell during all the commotion. It runs around the room from one person to the next before finally spotting Saias and rushes toward the man, stopping no more than a foot away. The wizard and anyone nearby can see that the creature does in fact have a rolled piece of parchment stamped between its teeth as it looks up at him with dark, panicked, eyes.I stream RPG sessions, campaign preparation, and world-building via my Twitch Channel and upload them to my Youtube Channel.

Re: [IC] The Sheep on the Borderlands
Saias
Amidst the absolute chaos the sheep was causing, Saias looked around in horror. He really, really hoped that it wouldn't cause any large damage that he might have to pay for, especially when it stopped right in front of him, as if to show ownership. Well, it was what it was. If the sheep was here, and so distressed, it had been brought for a reason - apparently, he noted, the letter between its teeth.
With a slight hesitation, Saias took the slightly-wet parchment and placed it against the table, intending to read it quickly.

Re: [IC] The Sheep on the Borderlands
Alastair
Alastair makes his way into town, humming a tune to himself. He smiles widely at the other passer-bys but they mostly keep to themselves. Alastair knows he may seem imposing to most, so he tries his best to remain cheerful and approachable.
Soon he sees the two dragons of the Twin Drakes tavern, and his stomach grumbles in anticipation of a meal. Before he reaches the door, the strangest thing occurs. A sheep comes racing from the easterly road in a panic, and barrels through the doors of the tavern. A most peculiar sight, Alastair remarks to himself. He looks toward the road that leads to the east, Though I would prefer to sit down to a hearty meal, I'd be remiss not to check if there isn't a shepherd somewhere in dire straits. It would be best to have someone along with me to investigate. Making up his mind, Alastair enters through the doors of the Twin Drakes and finds the sheep standing before Saias. Like Alastair, Saias has an interest in the arcane arts, though the man's skill surpasses Alastair's own. Right now, he is reading a parchment with interest.

Re: [IC] The Sheep on the Borderlands
The City Streets
Alastair looks in the direction from which the frantic sheep had come and is met with the faces of no less than a dozen confused and bewildered folks turned to see where the creature was headed. A few shake their heads in disbelief and go about their days, muttering to companions about what the worlds was coming to these days. A few wait around for a moment longer with their eyes on the tavern door as if expecting the farm animal to be ejected as quickly as it had entered. After a few moments of no such luck, they too begin to return to whatever it was they were doing previously.
The Twin Drakes
Shouts, curses, and plenty of colorful noises that need not be repeated finally begin to calm as the sheep comes to a full stop before Saias. The barkeep shouts out in disbelief to no one in particular, but clearly looking at the wizard: "What's the meaning of this?!?" The patrons and the staff look on in quiet anticipation to see what happens next, no one else daring yet to speak. From somewhere along the wall a nervous cough breaks out and is immediately shushed.
The sheep gladly offers up the paper in its mouth and the wizard notes it to be a spell scroll with an elaborate wax seal indicating it to be 'Speak With Animals'. Despite a little bit of sheep spit here and there and a few crumpled spots from where the creature had clamped down the spell seemed to be in working order and undamaged. The creature bleats at him demandingly and nudges its nose toward the scroll before bleating again.
Alden calls upon a bit of magic to allow himself the ability to speak with animals and suddenly the sheep's frantic noises make sense. He hears a smooth voice framed with the slightest air of pompous attitude making demands up at the wizard now holding the scroll. "Read it!" The creature nudges its nose toward the scroll before shoving it into the wizards thigh insistently. "Read the scroll and HELP ME you fool!" Once it sees the warlock approaching and speaking to it, it mutters something to itself about being addressed as 'fella' before realizing that the tiefling does in fact understand it. "You understand me?! Finally!! I need HELP!"
Spoiler: Note for SaiasSaias can opt to use the scroll now or save it for later. If using it now ou would hear the sheep exclaim to the tiefling the last line above and then you would understand the next part as well.
Once it knows someone can understand it, the sheep begins to chatter quite rapidly hardly waiting for you to keep up. It explains things with a hint of arrogance as if it were slightly bothered that you didn't already know them: "I'm not actually a sheep! I'm the great elven wizard Auridan Lothalus and I've been betrayed by my apprentice and transformed!" Murmurs begin to be passed between onlookers as some of the adventurers stand there and begin to converse with a sheep and the thing bleats back to them. Behind the bar, the barkeep continues to make demands to know whats going on and to have the creature removed from the building but the sheep appears to pay him no mind and continues to rattle on. "He stole my wand ... my greatest work and testament to my powers ... and used it to polymorph me one night during my trance. For two years I've been a prisoner at my own estate and forced to eat grass and flowers! For TWO YEARS I've been stuck in this body and forced to watch as he transformed others with MY wand and purports himself to be a wizard of skill!"Last edited by Bounty Hunter; 2017-12-11 at 02:50 PM.

After the sheep finishes talking, Alden feels he's regained his balance, and remarks. ..."well, that's what it claims anyway." Alden turns to the sheep and clasps his hands. "Now, that's certainly a fine story, and I take it you're asking for our help with solving this here matter? I admit it does sound rather serious, with this apprentice of yours going around turnin' people into . But see, my mum raised me properly, and I can't help thinking I didn't hear no 'please' among all that baaing." Alden raises an eyebrow and looks at the sheep wizard expectantly.
Spoiler: OOCAlden will keep acting as a translator.Last edited by Majin; 2017-12-11 at 03:26 PM.
