    Default Index of Vampiric Variants

    I'm trying to compile a list of different varieties of vampires/vampiric monsters. The list includes variant Vampires, creatures with vampiric traits, anything with "Vampire" in the name, and a small number of conditions inflicted by Vampires. Pathfinder and 3rd Party are a-okay.

    Here are the ones I've got so far and the book they're from as well as a brief description.


    WotC

    Blood Fiend - Fiend Folio: Demon strain of vampirism.
    Blood Ghoul - Ghostwalk: Creature who has gained enhanced strength by ingesting a Vampire's blood. The Vampire in question is granted control of any Blood Ghouls they create. Very similar to the Ghouls from White Wolf's World of Darkness setting.
    Blood Mummy (Hijarjany) - Dangerous Denizens: The Monsters of Tellene: Mummy who feeds on blood to maintain the appearance they had when alive.
    Demon Vampire - Web Article: A glabrezu with the standard vampire template.
    Drider Vampire - City of the Spider Queen: A drow that got cursed by Lolth, and then got cursed again, and now they have too many legs and drink blood.
    Fire Vampire - D20 Call of Cthulhu Core Rulebook: Diminutive aberration that is made of fire and feeds on the "essence" of living creatures. Not associated with more traditional Vampires.
    Half-Vampire - Libris Mortis: Living offspring of a recently turned vampire and a living creature, or of a vampire who was turned while pregnant.
    Hopping Vampire - Oriental Adventures: A chinese variant of Vampire, moves by hopping.
    Kasian Vampire - Dragon #348: Strain of Vampirism originating with Kas, Vecna's Vampire lieutenant.
    Katane - Dragon #313: Half Vampire, more powerful than the Half-Vampire in Libris Mortis.
    Mindflayer Vampire - Lords of Madness: As the name suggests. Not necessarily related to standard vampirism.
    Monstrous Vampire - Ghostwalk: Standard Vampirism, but with looser restrictions.
    Moonbane Vampire - Libris Mortis: Vampire that is weak to moonlight instead of sunlight.
    Pennaggolan - Oriental Adventures: East asian variety of Vampire whose head can separate from its body.
    Persuasive Vampire - Libris Mortis: Vampire that gains mass Suggestion instead of Dominate.
    Psychic Vampire - Libris Mortis: Vampire that drains Wis instead of Con.
    Savage Vampire - Dragon #348: More brutish variety of Vampire, not to be confused with Libris Mortis' Savage Vampire.
    Savage Vampire - Libris Mortis: Vampire that has increased Str and two claw attacks, but no Dominate ability.
    Shadow Sun Ninja - Tome of Battle: Initiator class with a capstone ability that can turn the player into a unique variety of Vampire that is not harmed by the sun.
    Shadow Vampire - Dragon #348: Vampire with a variety of shadow themed abilities.
    Sharjan - Dangerous Denizens: The Monsters of Tellene: Pseudo Vampire that that is created in a ritual that involves drinking Vampire blood or by being drained by a another Sharjan. Has fewer powers than true Vampire as well as fewer weaknesses. Not Undead.
    Star Vampire - D20 Call of Cthulhu Core Rulebook: Naturally invisible aberration that feeds on blood. Not associated with more traditional Vampires.
    Swarmform Vampire - Libris Mortis: Vampire that can transform into a swarm of rats or bats, instead of the standard, vampiric alternate forms.
    Terror Vampire - Dragon #348: Vampire that feeds on fear as well as blood, and has abilities that reflect this.
    Vampire - Diablo II: To Hell and Back: D&D conversion of the Vampires found in Diablo II.
    Vampire - MMI: Standard Vampire.
    Vampire Dire Wolf - D&D Miniatures: Unhallowed Set: Vampire, but also it's a big dog.

    Vampire Ooze- Web Article: Ooze with the Vampire tenplate. No stat block is provided.
    Vampiric Plants - Web Article: Robert Wiese went ahead and applied the Vampire template to a couple of plant creatures.

    Addle-Minded Vampire Spawn - Monster Codex: Creature who's mind is damaged due to repeated Vampiric domination.
    Bloodborn Vampire Spawn - Epic Meepo Presents: Monsters: Vampire created by a supernatural poison that is found in the blood of other Bloodborn Vampires.
    Culled One - Liber Vampyr: Secrets of the Blood: A variety of half vampire that is themed heavily off of the Twilight style of Vampire. Is significantly weaker than the Vampires in Twilight.
    Dhampir - Bestiary II: Half Vampire.
    Dread Vampire - Advanced Bestiary: Upgraded Vampire.
    Feral Vampire (Nachzehrer) - Liber Vampyr: Secrets of the Blood: Vampire that grows stronger and more bestial the longer it goes without feeding eventually becoming a monstrous man-bat hybrid. Not undead.
    Jiang-shi - Bestiary III: Pathfinder's take on the hopping vampire.
    Manananggal - Bestiary III: Similar to the Penanggalen but with bat wings, and the entire torso detaches.
    Nosferatu - Liber Vampyr: Secrets of the Blood: Vampire based on Count Orlok.
    Nosferatu - Bestiary IV: Vampire based on Count Orlok.
    Penanggalen - Bestiary III: Same idea as the WotC version, but spelled correctly.
    Psychic Vampire - Occult Bestiary: Vampire that feeds on occult
    energy. Very similar to the Vetala.
    Psychic Vampire (Lianashae) - Liber Vampyr: Secrets of the Blood: Vampire that feeds on life force (Cha) and uses psionic powers to enthrall its victims. Previous versions included a note that said thralls who were enslaved for more than a month and were healed of their Cha drain became Lianashae themselves. Not undead.
    Repeatedly Drained Vampire Spawn - Monster Codex: Creature who has gained some resistance to energy drain, but is physically and mentally weakened as a result of repeated vampire feedings.
    Revenant - Liber Vampyr: Secrets of the Blood: Alternate version of Vampirism intended for use by players.
    Vampire - Bestiary I: Standard Vampire, also referred to as Moroi.
    Vampire - Lords of the Night: Alternate Vampire template designed to be PC friendly.
    Vampire Spawn - Scions of the Vampire: Blood, Shadow, and Smoke: Weaker Vampire.
    Vetala - Campaign Setting: Inner Sea Bestiary: Vampire that can possess creatures and corpses, and that feeds on life ergy instead of blood.
    Vrykolakas - Mother of Flies: Semi-feral Vampire with animalistic traits.

    Chiang-shi - Ravenloft: Denizens of Dread: Eastern themed Vampire. Similar to Pathfinder's Jiang-shi.

    Mock Vampire - The Lords of the Night: Vampires: The result of a botched Vampire transformation. Has reduced intelligence, and bears a strong resemblance to zombies.
    Ravenous Vampire - The Lords of the Night: Vampires: Vampire with reptilian features and the ability to spread plague and pestilence.
    Shadow Vampire - The Lords of the Night: Vampires: Drow who's Vampirism originates from a divine curse that also granted them a range of shadow themed powers.
    Vampire Ghoul - The Lords of the Night: Vampires: As the name suggests, a Vampire ghoul hybrid.
    Vampire Scion - Fang and Fury: A Guidebook to Vampires: A weaker alternative to standard Vampirism intended for player use.
    Vampire Scion - The Lords of the Night: Vampires: Vampire variety that is locked in spiritual stasis (cannot gain skills, feats, XP, etc.) Analogous in most ways to WotC's Vampire Spawn.
    Vampire Touched - The Lords of the Night: Vampires: A mortal who has gained some vampiric traits as a result of being repeatedly rained by a Vampire. Similar to Ghouls from White Wolf's World of Darkness.
    Vampiric Simulacrum - The Lords of the Night: Vampires: Construct created from a mortal by a Vampire for the purpose of serving the Vampire.
    Vampiric Thrall - Fang and Fury: A Guidebook to Vampires: Essentially identical to a Blood Puppet.
    Vanguard - The Lords of the Night: Vampires: Large, physically powerful Vampire, with fewer supernatural abilities than other vampires.

    Drow Vampire: Drow Specific Vampire variant.
    Giant Vampire Frog: Large frog that drinks blood.
    Goblin Vampire: Goblin specific variant of Vampirism that feeds on fear as well as blood. Can be spread to other races with a specific curse.
    Greater Vampire, Lord: First in a series of five templates that act as upgrades for standard Vampires. Can only be applied to Vampires that are at least 999 years old.
    Greater Vampire, Arch-Lord): Second in a series of five templates that act as upgrades for standard Vampires. Can only be applied to Vampires that are at least 1998 years old.
    Greater Vampire, Princeling: Third in a series of five templates that act as upgrades for standard Vampires. Can only be applied to Vampires that are at least 2997 years old.

    Vampire Rose: Ambulatory rose that drinks blood.
    Vampire Squid: Augmented squid created by illithids.
    Vampire Vine: Ambulatory vine that drinks blood.
    Vampire-Spectre: Vampire variant with ties to tigers, that creates were-tigers instead of Vampires, or Vampire Spawn.
    Vampiric Kappa: More aggressive variety of kappa that drinks blood. Neither undead, or a true Vampire.
    Vampiric Mist: Living mist that feeds on blood, the frist of which were potentially created by a powerful Vampire wizard.
    Vampiric Wolf: Undead wolves with Vampiric traits that are created through a foul ritual.

    Great list!

    The only vampire variant I know that you are missing is Vampiric Dragon from Draconomicon. Which is exactly what it sounds like. It does have some interesting aspects that you can qualify as a dragonwraught kobold as a player though. Not the most optimal but workable in a mid op party.

    My own shameless plug is here. Has vampire + vampire lord + a new incoporeal vampire designed to be playable with their LA.

    Other templates attempting to fix vampire by adjusting it so it is playable for players are here and here

    Others homebrew:

    Sangrolu here is an epic level Lich/Vampire template which probably won't fit for too many games but is very cool in concept. There are two versions there, one by Rolep and one by Arcanist a bit down in the thread.

    Actually there is more vampires than undying.
    But undying are just a weird stuff local to only one setting and to books that are "book of evil but with the evil and good word flipped".

    The 3.X Ravenloft line (which was published by a division of White Wolf under the Sword & Sorcery label) had a bunch of them. For sure there were Chiang-Shi, Elven Vampire, Dwarven Vampire, Nosferatu, and Vrykolaka, and maybe a Halfling Vampire as well. And they all had age categories kind of like how dragons do, ranging from fledgling to patriarch (even Strahd himself was not a patriarch yet).

    Dragon #348 has 3 variants: The savage vampire, which I think is the same as it appears in Libris Mortis, plus the shadow vampire and the terror vampire.

    There also was Drider Vampire in the City of the Spider Queen

    Ghostwalk have Monstrous Vampire - which is, essentially, the same vanilla Vampire, just for different creature types

    Dragon #313 have Katane - one more variant of Half-Vampire template

    Dragon #348 have also Kasian Vampire

    Vampire Dire Wolf from the D&D Miniatures: Unhallowed set


    Vampiric Plants - in the article Creatures That Cannot Be II

    Also, this Vampire was adapted to tabletop in Diablo II: Diablerie and Diablo II: To Hell and Back

    Is it Undead-only list? Some creatures are have "Vampire" in their name, but alive...

    I've been going through a couple relevant books that are of rather high quality.

    Liber Vampyr offers a pretty large variety of vampires.
    - Revenants - the main point of the book. A +0 LA vampire race that acquires most of their powers via feats. Even includes three base classes specifically for the race and a number of prestige classes (including a blood magic practitioner that becomes a sort of living vampire). Overall, extremely well done, my only criticism is that the vampiric power feats suffer from too many feat taxes and could use some consolidation.
    - The Culled Ones - a tongue-in-cheek translation of Twilight style vampires. Of special note is that they are not actually undead. That amuses me.
    - Nachzehrer - the Feral Vampire, another living vampire variation that is essentially a were-vampire. The longer the Nachzehrer goes without feeding the more monstrous it becomes, eventually becoming a large sized hell-faced werebat after a week.
    - Nosferatu - standard Max Schreck vamp. An ugly, sterile, avatar of corruption.
    - Lianashae - a Psychic Vampire that creates something in the vein of the Purple Man from Jessica Jones. Feeds on the Charisma of targets and eventually makes them Thralls. In a previous version it included a note that Thralls who are enslaved for more than a month but are eventually healed of the Cha drain become Lianashae themselves and I thought that this was pretty interesting. Not sure why it was removed. It would be added back in in any game where I used them.

    The Lords of the Night: Vampires (not the Dreamscarred one) is another book that makes vampires playable. This is possibly the best attempt to do so that I have ever seen, offering options that I haven't seen before outside of literature and movies. Has a common thread that all the vampires are actually empowered by The Void, an eldritch embodiment of hunger that ties into some of their other books. It is a fun bit of fluff that doesn't lessen the utility of the vampires. Vampiric offerings include...
    - Black Bloods - this is the standard version of the vampire with some twists shared by the other breeds.
    - Ash Vampires - like a mix of vampire and Athasian Defiler, they drain the life out of the living and the land all around them.
    - Fire Vampires - they are what it says in the tin. Driven by vengence birthed in the fires of their creation.
    - The Lost - essentially fallen angels that got caught on the Prime Material instead of continuing to hell. Characterized by wings and memory problems. More interesting than it might initially seem.
    - Mock Vampires - the results of a failed vampire transformation. Remains dead for at least a week longer that the normal 1d4 days it takes for a vampire to rise, and comes back looking like a zombie but still having the power of a vampire.
    - Ravenous Vampires - a more reptilian breed of vampire (think Dusk Till Dawn type vamps) with a focus on voracious apetites and the spreading of disease.
    - Shadow Vampires - the result of a divine curse on a group of Drow by an irked vampire god. Incapable of creating more (turning people results in Black Bloods) except through further cursing.
    - Vangaard - large sized brutal vampires with inate beastforms that have lost some of their more subtle capabilities. Only created from barbarians and other such berzerkers.
    - Vampire Scion - this is a more interesting version of the more typical vampire spawn, created when someone dies from being fed upon without taking the time to turn them properly. The Scion keeps all of their abilities as per a normal template but they can never gain any new capabilities. No experience gain, no learning new spells, nothing. The Scion is held in complete spiritual stasis (so that they may never usurp their master) and they are very aware of it. They can only be released from this minor hell with the death of their master or if their master creates more Scions than he can control. First in, first out. Since Vampire Scions can be created relatively easily (and therefore accidentally) most vampires are unsure of exactly how many they actually have. This can make controlling large broods... interesting.
    - Dhampyre - The traditional half-vampire done quite well.
    - Vampire Touched - what happens when, on the third night of turning someone into a vampire, you keep them alive instead. Very similar to a Ghoul from World of Darkness. Great addition to the game.

    Overall I'm really impressed with The Lords of the Night: Vampire. It does a great job of making vampires playable (using blood points and having variable LAs based on the age of the vampire). The publishers also have two other books, The Lords of the Night: Liches and The Lords of the Night: Zombies, that give liches and zombies the same treatment and I'm itching to actually use them in a game.

    Great contributions from everyone, I've added everything up to ShurikVch's post, and will be adding the rest tomorrow. Until then, keep 'em coming, though I suspect we're running out of Vampires.

    Yeah, a number of the more classic monsters have an unexpectedly large number of variants. Skeletons, zombies, and liches are some good examples, and I suspect ghosts might have quite a few variants as well.

    Blood Ghoul template (in Ghostwalk WE):
    A blood ghoul is a mortal creature temporarily altered by the ingestion of a vampire’s blood. Though this act compels the blood ghoul to serve the vampire that provided it, many of these creatures actually enjoy their roles and would willingly serve even without this compulsion. Despite their connections with vampires, blood ghouls are not themselves undead, nor are they related in any way to the ghouls in the Monster Manual. Blood ghouls cannot propagate their own kind; each is created by a particular vampire. The transformation usually lasts several days but may persist for weeks or even months (see Spawning a Blood Ghoul, below).
    Kingdoms of Kalamar have Sharjani (pseudo-vampires), who are keep their original type (Humanoid or Monstrous Humanoid), but also get many attributes associated with Vampires:
    • Bite attack
    • Blood Rage
    • Create Spawn
    • Darkvision
    • Fast Healing
    • Immunities - to sleep, poison, paralysis, mind-affecting spells
    • Improved Grab
    • Resistances to cold and electricity
    • Scent
    • Spider Climb
    • Vulnerability to Sunlight
    • Vulnerability to Water
    There are several Sharjani templates: Least Sharjan, Lesser Sharjan, Greater Sharjan, Sharjan Lord, and Rhajghani (pseudo-ghoul). They got the aforementioned attributes in different amount (for example, Least Sharjan isn't, actually, wounded by sunlight - just inconvenienced, but also don't get any of immunities at all)
    The latest print of Sharjani was in Dangerous Denizens: The Monsters of Tellene

    Also, the very same book have Blood Mummy (Hijarjany) - when it's well-fed, it looks exactly like when it was still alive; when hungry - it's appearance is alike to Wight or Zombie; in combat, mechanically, it's the same Mummy, except, if it's hungry, it lose some Str

    The "Dying of the Light" adventure - in the Dungeon #84 - have Vampire Rose Bush; it's a Plant, but since the adventure is heavily-Vampire-themed, it should be more than mere coincidence

    Fire vampire and Star vampire were statted in the Call of Cthulhu d20 (as Aberrations)

    There are a few different vampire variants in Fang & Fury by Green Ronin, such as the "Natural" Vampire and the "Blood Symbiote" Vampire

    Just for the sake of being thorough the 3rd party Amalgam template from Green Ronin's Advanced Bestiary makes any creature (other than Construct) combined with any vampire into an Undead vampiric amalgam of the two. Exists for both PF and 3.x with the PF version being on the PFSRD site.

    Allows for a lot of silliness but also some awesome.

    EDIT: Addotionally, vampire Constructs are possible if the Construct is bitten and succumbs while under the effect of the Greater Humanoid Essence spell.
    The spell makes it a Humanoid for the duration and the template will persist after the spell fades.

    Been a while, but here's an unusual variant that was missed:

    Velya - CD&D: An undersea vampire type created from sailors and merfolk via a curse, with an enthralling song rather than a Domination gaze and vulnerable to air rather than sunlight.

    Also, FWIW, the Vampire Rose and Nosferatu were introduced in CD&D before they were adapted to the other (A)D&D rules system.

    CD&D = "Classic Dungeons & Dragons", i.e. the old Basic/Expert/etc system that was published side by side with AD&D

    Incidentally, the old 1e monster called the "Crimson Death" was alleged to be created from the still-restless essence of a destroyed vampire, much like the Gulthias Tree of 3.5e. Jander Sunstar, a non-Evil vampire from the Ravenloft products, only refrained from killing himself immediately because he feared he'd become a Crimson Death and lose what little self-control he had. (I don't think it was ever actually confirmed that's where a Crimson Death comes from, but Jander believed it.)

    Also, long before Kalamar's version, 1e had "Pseudo-Undead" including pseudo-vampires. Unlike Sharjani, they had no special attacks or supernatural abilities, just the base HD and natural attacks of a 1e vampire, plus 30' infravision.

    And I don't know if this counts, but one of the Hollow World products (also CD&D) contained a short adventure scenario about a kind of "reverse vampire" called a Sun-Wight. It was an unique undead created by an Entropic (read "Evil") Immortal to fill the role of a vampire in the Hollow World's interior, where the sun never sets and regular vampires couldn't survive. I don't know if you'd want to list it or not, as although it had many vampiric traits it's assumed to be destroyed by the PC heroes within minutes of it being unleashed.

    In the 3E, Crimson Death is in the Monster Manual II

    "Birth of the Dead: Origins of the Walking Dead" article says about it:
    Legends tell that a crimson death is born from the destruction of a strong-willed vampire. This is not, in fact, the case. Crimson deaths might form from anyone who dies via exsanguination and whose body is then consumed or destroyed. A traveler in a marsh sucked dry by leeches and then consumed by other swamp creatures might rise as a crimson death. Similarly, a vampire who drains a victim and then cremates the body to prevent it from rising as another vampire might provoke the manifestation of a crim-son death. The same hatred and iron will required to create ghosts or wraiths is necessary for the formation of a crimson death. They favor swamps and other misty regions due to their ability to easily hide in such environments, and not due to any necrological aspects of their condition.

    You've missed the psychic alien vampires. They've got some of the powers of a vampire like being able to dominate lesser beings. They can also turn lesser beings into their own kind and while they don't get destroyed by sunlight they are hindered by it. They don't drink blood, but instead they eat brains.

    What were they called again? Oh yeah, Illithids! That's it!

    Mind Flayer, Vampire (LoM p.160): medium undead with blood drain and energy drain (as well as brain extraction)



    ...maybe they were created by this guy?
