Re: [PF] Ruins of Azlant - The Lost Colony
Whiskers looks quizzically at Hasruk and then rolls over onto his back, floating in the water while slapping his flippers against his chest - which Hasruk recognizes as his request for belly scritches. At the same time, Jimbei channels a little bit of Gozreh's divine energy in the form of a concentrated blast of water. It hits the strange goblin-like creature square in the chest, knocking it backwards with a screech. Hachi scuttles backwards on Jimbei's head, away from the strange being that was just a moment ago trying to take it away from its master. A dark black cloud emanates suddenly in the water around them, obscuring everything. Jimbei is unable to see the boat very clearly, so his grip slips on the side of it and he falls back into the water.
When Jessica climbs back aboard, she sighs at the relative safety and catches her breath from the exertion - and then realizes that her dress is now stained with dark black ink splotches everywhere.
The strange creature still alive in the water clutches at its chest fearfully and then grips some shells around its neck and clacks them together loudly while hissing at the group through sharp, jagged teeth. The next moment, it disappears into the water's depths, leaving only a trail of frothing bubbles in its wake as it retreats incredibly swiftly.
One by one, the remaining passengers climb back aboard, helped as necessary by Hasruk and Jessica. It occurs to Hasruk that with so much blood in the water, its only a matter of time before those that can smell it will arrive.
Spoiler: Combat Over!
The last creature took 4 points of damage and fled, using its jet ability to move 200' away from the group. Combat is effectively over. The only loot the creatures had were a necklace of shells on each of them and a simple makeshift small-sized spear each.

Shaking his head, Hasruk puts his scythe down at the bottom of the boat. He helps the others to climb back on board. "You too, Bumbler. It's a nice swim, I know, but the blood will attract other hungry things, soon. We should get to shore."
Once all are safely inside the boat, he sits, and bows his head to Kaylah. "Such warrior reflexes are worthy of great respect. I'm sorry mine weren't there." Cheeks grey-red with embarrassment, he begins to row furiously.DM in Mummy's Mask I, II, III | Keshkaru and Ozkrak in Extinction Curse | Marzena in Age of Worms | Elrembriel in Wrath of the Righteous | Gurmok in Nightmare in Katapesh | DM in Catacombs of Ravenloft Avatar courtesy of Neoseph7

Re: [PF] Ruins of Azlant - The Lost Colony
Jessica sits down in the boat, and immediately goes about helping the rest of the party back in, oblivious to the ruination which has fallen upon her outerwear. As the last of her companions clambers over the edge, she sits down and begins to run her hands over the sopping gown. Her eyes follow her hands, and immediately widen in shock and fury.
For the next several moments, she focuses on her breathing- making a desperate attempt to control her emotions while her allies row towards the shore. It's even odds whether or not the outburst would be screaming or sobbing, as her face betrays the storm of emotion raging within her. Deep breaths rise rhythmically, steadily, pulsing along with the flow of the ocean.

As soon as the threat has passed and everyone is back in the longboat safely, a loud cheer erupts from the Peregrine behind them. The colonists and sailors wave excitedly and clap and whistle at the five of them, yelling barely-heard cheers of well-wishing as the ship's sails catch the wind and begin to make a long, laborious turn back to sea.

Re: [PF] Ruins of Azlant - The Lost Colony
"It was nothing," Kaylah says to Hasruk. "There are a thousand talents with more value than war."
After hauling herself back into the boat - a process which nearly tips the thing over, due to her weight - Kaylah wipes the inky blood off her huge blade and puts it back in its wet leather sheath. She isn't surprised that the last creature fled: while not familiar with these monsters, it was smart enough to know a losing battle when it saw one. She turns and looks when the colonists on the Peregrine cheer, but doesn't allow herself more than a small smile.
They wouldn't be cheering much if I'd not kept it together.
Looking about as the cutter heads further towards the shoreline, Kaylah looks around, only to notice somebody else on the vessel who is most definitely not keeping it together. She recognizes the signs: Jessica looks about ready to burst. Quietly, the warrior moves to sit beside her.
"Hey, you alright?" F*ck, she doesn't know why she's doing this. Maybe something on the woman's face reminds her of someone else. Maybe it just feels good to be the one doing the comforting for once. "Those things were freaky, huh. You can't have been expecting trouble that quick."Last edited by 3SecondCultist; 2018-03-16 at 10:42 AM.

Re: [PF] Ruins of Azlant - The Lost Colony
Bumbler grins as she climbs into the boat, chuckling to herself despite the deep red most of her clothes are soaked in. Oddly enough, the only fully visible wound she has is smaller than it was before. "Told 'em a good way, that one," she comments, nodding off towards where the last attacker had disappeared to. As she sees the state Jessica is in, and Kaylah speaking to her, Bumbler seems to consider chiming in herself, before not doing so, instead looking up at the sky, as if looking for something.

Re: [PF] Ruins of Azlant - The Lost Colony
Early Afternoon, 13th Erastus 4718
Under the heat of the strong mid-day sun, the group continues to row closer to shore as the Peregrine continues to make her turn to return back to the sea, headed ultimately for the secondary rendezvous point. Whiskers, at Hasruk’s instruction, swims alongside the longboat. As they approach the shore, the details of the small village become clearer.
Almost directly in front of them as they approach is a solitary dock that extends from the beach into the bay. The construction is solid and looks recent, suitable for tying off a small boat, although no watercraft are visible. The beach inclines to the east before giving way to grass and trees. Further on in that direction, buildings and a palisade wall stand on the rise.
Spoiler: Village Image
For reference (except there aren’t any people around):
A well-worn path in the grass leads from the dock and rises up a slope toward a cluster of buildings to the east. The buildings are arranged in a rough triangle, with each point ending in a wooden circular enclosure with rectangular notches cut intermittently, like battlements. These round enclosures are clearly meant to be three points of a wooden palisade fence, which would enclose this first group of buildings once completed. The palisade fence, however, is complete only along the southeastern side of the triangle and is obviously unfinished elsewhere. The grass around the settlement looks like it was cropped at one point, and many paths exist between locations in the settlement, but in less well-trafficked spots, the grass has started to regrow.
All the buildings are constructed of either rough timber or mud bricks set in a wooden frame, and have pitched thatch roofs. Many have open window frames, but only a few have actual shutters or even a canvas curtain for privacy. Doors are basic, wooden affairs, too simple for locks, and some buildings lack them entirely. The construction is new, quite rough and unfinished.

Re: [PF] Ruins of Azlant - The Lost Colony
Spoiler: in the skiffJessica doesn't respond to Kaylah immediately. Her eyes flick in the warrior's direction as she continues to breathe and blink. After a moment, she whispers, "oh? You were." A decidedly unpleasant expression settles on the young priestess' face, as she continues. "You've made it plain for 6 weeks that you didn't think I was up to this," she grunts, unsure herself if she actually is. "Don't act like you care about my feelings now, when I'm not even the hurt one!" She stares daggers at Kaylah for a moment, heedless of the heavy blade she just cleaned and the war raging within her own thoughts.
Her eyes settle into the floorboards, as she lapses into silence.Spoiler: OOCIf not interrupted, Jessica will remain silent until making landfall.
As Jessica exits the boat, her mood is decidedly sour. Darkly colored by their unpleasant welcome, the clear absence of any habitation is even more worrisome. Her eyes scan the palisade, and she frowns. Almost tangibly unsure where to begin, she leans heavily on her glaive, weighed down by the sodden dress hanging off her shoulders. What was once loose cloth now clings tightly, straining propriety and clearly revealing her athletic frame to the rest of the party and any observers. As the drops falling from her dress disappear into the sand, she waits for someone else to make a decision about how they are to inspect the unfinished town.

Re: [PF] Ruins of Azlant - The Lost Colony
When Jessica replies to her comment with poison, Kaylah just grunts to herself and turns to help the shaman row the boat the rest of the way to shore. Not her place to comment on a woman's ways, but she knows when she's not wanted. There's no passing hurtful comment in response, and only a bit of resentment. She was trying to help, after all, in her own way.
Come on. Ain't like you've ever given a sh*t about helping anyone before. Why start now?
"Well this looks like a thousand ambushes waiting to happen," Kaylah muses darkly after they've all come ashore. The Nap - the Rest - whatever it's called, the mercenary feels apprehensive here immediately. There are too many places for an enemy to hide: between the buildings, in the shadows of the trees, behind the palisades, in the dug-out wells...
Hefting her sword, the warrior points the blade roughly at the outlying farms to the north, and then to the south. "Maybe best we cover the outlying territories first, then work our way in? Less chance we get surrounded that way."Spoiler: Stuff I'm Working OnSmall Justice

Re: [PF] Ruins of Azlant - The Lost Colony
Moment by moment, Jessica's own inexperience pounds against her psyche. She finds herself, irritatingly, nodding in agreement with Kaylah, quickly recognizing the wisdom in the warrior's words. "Good idea," she mutters, begrudgingly acknowledging it, as the party begins to pace up the sandy beach accordingly.
Jessica makes a point to stay roughly in the back half of the group. Under the best of circumstances, her linen dress would be little (if any) defense against the weapons she's already seen, and now the garment doesn't even hide her shape. She's equal parts self-conscious and wary of danger, as they plod towards the unprotected would-be farmsteads.

Re: [PF] Ruins of Azlant - The Lost Colony
1400 Hours: 13th Erastus
The group lashes the longboat to the dock and, one by one, they climb onto it. They find the dock to be of sturdy construction, not yet weather-worn by the sun and waves. There is a small wicker basket and a fishing pole abandoned on the dock, not far from where the dock meets the shore.
A group of about a half dozen gray and green colored birds alight from the grasses along the edge of the beach as Jessica steps onto the sand. She looks around and sees nothing of interest. No people. No sounds of a thriving village. No smoke from the mud-brick and thatch houses. There's only the constant susurrus of waves and the occasional bird call.
Ever vigilant, Kaylah casts her eyes around for potential threats but instead finds something unusual. Almost directly beneath where their longboat is moored, there is a long dark shape in the water roughly ten feet down. She kneels down on the dock and can make out what appears to be an overturned canoe resting on the seafloor.

Nodding at the priestess, Kaylah does one last minute check of the group to make sure they're all ready to bear. That's when she notices the shape beneath the dock.
"... huh." Her voice is noticeably flat in its inflection, albeit tinged with curiosity. She points out the shape to the others. "Looks like somebody sunk the other cutter."
She doesn't ask the silent question of why. Truth be told, she hasn't the faintest idea why anyone would choose to sink a boat like that. Could be that whoever did it could swim, and didn't want anyone else getting off the island?Spoiler: Stuff I'm Working OnSmall Justice

Jessica frowns, her eyes following Kaylah's pointing finger. "I could probably swim down there to see if there's anything interesting," she begins, with a few pointed glances towards the companions that entered the bay more willingly a few minutes prior. "But I wonder if I'm the best suited. If it's the same to you, I'd rather keep drying off." She scowls at the steady drips falling from her hems, before visibly putting the matter from her mind. Her grip on the glaive is so tight her knuckles are showing white through the skin, as her aggravation makes itself known.

Bumbler stays quiet as the group arrives, taking in the sights with a smile, though her focus is clearly more on the trees than the empty settlement. She pauses mid-step as Kaylah mentions the sunken boat, looking down and cocking her head to the side. "Yup, yup, that's me," Bumbler says with a nod as Jessica looks over to her. Without ceremony, she steps off the dock and falls into the water, expelling a lungful of bubbles on the way down before inspecting the canoe.

Hasruk notices the exchange between Kaylah and Jessica, but refrains from stepping in. He's not the most familiar in social intercation between human women, and besides, now is really not the time. As the group disembarks, he watches around the deserted village - something must have happened here, but what?
Meanwhile, Whiskers swims this way and that, in a wide semi circle around the dock.
While he watches Bumbler go down to explore the sunk boat, he remarks, "We gotta pull our boat far out on the beach. Re: [PF] Ruins of Azlant - The Lost Colony
Bumbler swims down to the sunken boat to discover that it's a rough-cut wooden canoe about roughly 15 feet in length - much shorter than the skiff she and the others arrived on. It's overturned so all she can see is the curved underside of the hull, and that there's a couple-inch-wide hole in the bottom of it.
The lip of the length of the canoe is partially buried in the sand. She pries her fingers into the sand and curls them around the lip and lifts slowly. Fortunately, she has swift reflexes and pulls her hand away as a small, dark-red-colored claw snaps at her hand from beneath the sunken watercraft. In Aquan, she hears a muffled voice from under the canoe say, "Go away! My home!" Then, the canoe drops back down to rest on the seafloor in a puff of sand.

From her vantage point, Bumbler can only see a minuscule portion of whatever creature lives beneath the canoe - too little to make out details. It says back to her with an unfriendly snarl, "My home. Big ocean - you find own place! Leave! Go!" At one point, a dark beady eye surrounded by brown-tinged wrinkled skin peers out and sees her still sitting there. The creature growls and moves away from the hole, then she hears some shifting and scuttling under the boat...and then silence.

Bumbler shrugs. Being that she is both parallel to the ground and underwater, the gesture is accompanied by a flapping of her hands to keep her from shifting out of position, and probably loses most of the usual effect. Then she swims back up to the surface, hauling herself out of the water and back onto the dock, still smiling. "Little pincher in the boat, yeah," she says. "Friendly like the tree's neighbor, not the best of my house, for one."

At Hasruk's words, Jessica nods. "That's another good idea. Wouldn't want a repeat of whatever happened to theirs..." She takes the mooring line and begins the task, guiding the skiff around the dock towards the sand, where it'll take more than two hands to lift it above the tidemark.
When Bumbler returns to the shore with news, the young priestess frowns. "Do you think he's the one that sank it, or just an opportunistic squatter? Either way, he might know more about what happened here. Can you ask nicely?"

With the group's effort, the longboat is easily carried ashore. Hasruk figures that high tide will happen in the next few hours, so he easily gauges how far to carry the longboat so that the tide will not undo their efforts. With that done, they turn their sights to the seemingly abandoned colony as a gentle breeze causes the hide flaps in the houses' windows to ripple and the grasses and trees to sway gently.

Beads of sweat rolling off of her brow, Kaylah puts the last touches on moving the boat. Nodding at Hasruk when the job is done, she listens to the exchange between Bumbler and Jessica without saying a word. Instead, the woman warrior takes the time to look at the southernmost farms and steads.
"Maybe we go south first, check out those farms." Kaylah spits out a bit of lactic acid, the phlegm mixing with the sand. Re: [PF] Ruins of Azlant - The Lost Colony
Listening to Bumbler, Hasruk finds her way of expression a little less confusing than before. However unlikely, it seems he's beginning to get used to it. "Not an animal, talks, but doesn't want to make friends. 'Kay. Off to visiting the place, then."
The boat securely in place on the sand and well out of reach of potential aggressors, he nods at Kaylah's prudent suggestion. "We got to begin somewhere. Might as well look at the easier part first." He walks back to the water's edge, where Whiskers is busy digging in the wet sand for something - apparently some kind of edible mollusk hiding there. He talks to the beast in orcish for a while, and comes back. "Ready. The little guy will stay here."
SpoilerWith his land speed of 10, I don't plan to have Whiskers along to slow the group down. I'll use Longstrider to bring him with us if the situation warrants it.Last edited by Gwynfrid; 2018-03-23 at 08:31 AM.

Re: [PF] Ruins of Azlant - The Lost Colony
Both Kaylah and Jessica have a difficult time picking out anything of note. Jessica's shorter stature makes it a little more difficult to see over the slight rise where the beach ends and the grasses begin. But all they can make out from the dock is the roofs of a number of houses along a row leading south from the southern edge of the triangular half-finished wall. Kaylah can also make out a few various vegetable garden plots, overgrown and full of weeds. Perhaps the only thing of interest that Kaylah notes is that there is nothing of interest. None of the homes are damaged. There's no sign of attack or fire.

Jimbei struggles to lift himself up onto the boat, but eventually is able to get himself over the edge and flops inside, without rocking the boat too much. He takes his place at his seat and looks around the boat to make sure everyone is ok. He opens his mouth to say something to her, but after hearing her reaction to Kaylah’s remark he instead grabs his oar and looks forward, ready to press on.

Bumbler quietly follows the path up the small hill towards the smithy, an L-shaped building constructed of mud bricks on a wooden frame. As she circles around the building slowly, she sees that the western portion of the building is enclosed by four walls. This section has a single small open window on the south side, with a canvas curtain hung across the opening that is gently swaying with the breeze. The single entrance is a wooden door, standing slightly ajar, on the southern end of the eastern face of the building.
A ten-foot extension connects to the building on the east side that only has a northern wall and is otherwise just a roof sheltering sheltering the space below. Underneath this cover is the forge with an exhaust flue directly above it, a worktable covered in metal scraps, a small tub of black water and a partially sheltered anvil.
Bumbler quietly lifts the canvas covering the only window out of the way and peers into the darkened interior. A pungent animal smell assails her nose as she leans in to see a storage area in a state of disarray, with tools such as tin snips, pliers and files carelessly strewn all over. Among the mess, she can see a few weapons and pieces of armor laying on the floor as well. To the north, there is a doorway covered by a thin sheet for privacy - she guesses that it leads to the smithy's living quarters.
Of a more pressing concern however, she sees a short brown-skinned creature with big pointed ears and a wide mouth - a goblin, but with brown skin instead of the green skin she's used to seeing - standing bored in the middle of the storage area inside, leaning on a spear and lazily looking around. It even looks towards the window but it doesn't seem to see or hear her. Strangely though, it has a long tail that is slowly swishing back and forth in its boredom. It is dressed in simple leather armor and has a crudely made necklace made of a leather cord threaded through a rock with a hole drilled through it. Some sort of symbol is etched onto the rock, but she is unable to make out exactly what.

So far, it has not seen Bumbler, but the other party members slowly approaching may not be as stealthy....what does she do?
