I thought it was a talisman?

The hammer doesn't shoot beams, it reflects them.

In Babylon 5, the Vorlons appear to the younger races as angelic beings, to help them in the task of guidance they've taken upon themselves. Maybe the Star Power have a similar role in the cultural consciousness of the races across the galaxy.

Though it's probably best not to think about it too much.

I think it's a subtle hint of his backstory. His use of poetic language hints at an educated background. He probably was a [Language] major, and also philosophy and theology. But after 20 years or so working in underpaid or unpaid assistant jobs trying to get tenure he finally snapped and became an brutal warlord. His use of a warhammer supports that; I saw a lot of [Language] majors getting hammered back in university.

Didn't have a lot of time lately and I'm in a good mood, so might as well talk about something that DIDN'T bother me about the comic but was mentioned in this thread, namely the angel and the pizza box.

On a theoretical level, it's not impossible to create a world where small world building elements appear naturally in the background and might be used as important pieces of information later (Gunnekrigg Court is very good at that).
But very often shortcuts can be made, and elements from our experience are used to save us time and prevent the loss of focus.

The pizza box from the previous arc is a good example.
Maybe it doesn't belong in the created world, maybe something else could have been prepared and used, but a single panel with a cardboard box told us everything we need to know about the scene without words and we understood Danica's gesture without the need to divert our attention elsewhere.

The "angel" reference is more or less the same.
Ask yourself this, would you rather have a word from our time used to understand the context, or do you prefer countless of meaningless fillers about the religious background of the federation, just to replace this single word?

I'll kind of give you the pizza box, although I feel like there could have been something less anachronistic?
But the Angel thing is stupid because there is no point in him calling her that. Does he call anything that flies an angel? Is the concept of flying people so limited it requires religious implications?

Also, that's a weird way to start a rock off.

    It’s very adept at killing.

Which remains a hauntingly stupid way to describe an inanimate object. I suppose that’s probably why I can’t forget it.

I see this as two separate things.
In the linguistic sense, I don't have any problem with it.
But yes, I fully agree that the use of the word "angel" felt awkward in this context, like he's trying to hit on her seconds before literally trying to hit her.

Anyway, I don't usually have problems with the art.
As a concept, I'm okay with everything as long as I can understand what's going on.
That means recognizing the characters, understanding the basic actions, not having the art contradict the words, and being able to intuitively read the panels without problems.

That last part baffled me, I had to read the page three times before understanding that the panel order is left, right, left, down.

I think you're using a narrow definition of the word. In mythology angels act as messengers and protectors, but are also powerful beings that are capable of destroying the enemies of God.
    Or he is an incel.

There is a reason they start every conversation with "FEAR NOT!" Its hard to talk to someone who is running away gibbering in terror.

Or the most difficult role in Greek tragedies (angellos means messenger, and messengers in tragedies often had to describe the most important happenings, that could not be performed on the scene, like the battle at Salamis. This means that they had to elicit a reaction in the viewers just singing a description instead of acting it, while also while wearing a mask that hid their facial features.)

I prefer how the Angel of Death appears in Prince of Egypt: a puff of ghostly spiritual energy devouring the souls of firstborns without a care.
