Re: OOTS #1111 - The Discussion Thread
Haha. I've been feeling the same way. This sounds too easy. I feel like we're being set up to have optimistic expectations, only to have them thwarted.
Edit: as Elan explains, "Everyone knows that plans only work if you keep them a secret first!"
Further Edit: and I differ from Roy. As a reader, I'd prefer exciting uncertainty over dull efficiency.Last edited by Hiro Quester; 2018-01-26 at 05:47 PM.

Re: OOTS #1111 - The Discussion Thread
Really glad to see Hilgya being key to saving the day There's a huge difference between fighting vampires with and without clerical magic. Having death ward and protection from law will make the spawn mere fodder for Roy's sword.
BTW, i'm not sure if Hilgya will be able to pray for spells before the battle (probably not), but it would be awesome to have disrupting weapon cast on Roy's sword. Even if Roy get unlucky with a damage roll, the vampire will have to succeed on Will to avoid being destroyed. And going by the law of rivals (so Hilgya's level = Durkon's level), that could even apply to Durkula himself.
EDIT: it also dawned on me that as a powerful cleric of Loki, Hilgya will probably have Chaos and Fire as domains, and so should be packing plenty of 1d6/level fire spells. Even with protection from fire and reflex for half damage (assuming Hilgya's level = Durkon's level) 16d6 fire damage is still brutal.Last edited by Noodz; 2018-01-26 at 06:06 PM.

Re: OOTS #1111 - The Discussion Thread
To be fair, having a name is not enough to ensure a minor NPC's survival. Remember the fate of poor Solt Lorkyurg?

Wait, so they don't have names? Harsh. Also, I am interested to see RealDurkon's thoughts about meeting Hilgya again.
Speaking of which, if Durkon realizes that Kudzu is his kid, would that grant him another saving throw against Von Durkula?Last edited by SpaceCommander; 2018-01-26 at 05:56 PM.

Re: OOTS #1111 - The Discussion Thread
Feel sorry for her host she does not have a name either.
Yes they do. Durkula called himself "Durkon Thundershield" at the Godsmoot while being very formal and dropping every pretenseof being Durkon the Dwarf, he also keeps calling Hammerfallen "Exarch".
Soooo, two of the vampires who escaped the ambush were spawns (possibly three but Durkula does not know that the red-head Cleric Vampire got turned too) ; The Exaargh is studying... something (if that happens to be Malack's Quickened Vampire Raiser then my money is on the Exaargh ultimately surviving to plague the Dwarven Lands for years to come thus fullfilling Durkon's prophecy) ; he also is going to do something in the meeting place before the council arrives (I guess setting up illusions spells so that Jerkon and Co can infiltrate and dominate the council more easily) ; Jerkon will fight the order with a force consisting of at least six vampires :
-himself
-the human one
-those who escaped the ambush (V spotted at least four, we were shown three including two commoner-looking spawns and a Cleric.
The good news is the Order apparently only has to survive until the meeting to foil Darkon's plan.
Edit and he is not expecting any of ther preparations and their knowing of the gang-up on V and the Symbol of death.
I love the smell of vampires in the morning.Last edited by Fyraltari; 2018-01-26 at 06:03 PM.

So that's two fewer vampire clerics waiting to ambush the Order. So Durkula thinks he and 2 spawn can take the rest of them? My, my, we are confident.

Re: OOTS #1111 - The Discussion Thread
Why would Durkon get a save? He's dead, not possessed. Vampires donot revert to normal in any circumstances, and as we know from early on, Durkula can go through years of memories in a span of time not noticeable by those outside.
Durkon's hope, I believe, is that Durkula misinterprets a memory and acts on false assumptions. Durkon has no means of driving out, delaying, or even inconveniencing Durkula.
As for names, what should they call themselves? Their only memories at the time of their creation come from the corpse they inhabit. They remember being called nothing else, and they have no existence outside their host. Destroy a vampire and that spirit dissolves back into negative energy, just as elementals revert to their element.
Plus, dragging the name of their host through the mud makes itthat much more difficult for the victim to reclaim its former life, and vampires are by alignment sadistic.

Re: OOTS #1111 - The Discussion Thread
We know that all the memories go by very quickly inside the vampire's head, right? It still has to take time though. Could Durkon theoretically unload days and days of memory onto Von Durkula at once though, potentially causing it to miss its turn? I mean, there has to be a limit to how much it can be sped up, after all; speed of thought or not.
Also, I'm not sure if Hilgya's going to be so eager to resurrect Durkon after his plan is foiled.Last edited by SpaceCommander; 2018-01-26 at 06:21 PM.

Re: OOTS #1111 - The Discussion Thread
Hah, Durkula's anti-humility is biting (heh) him in the butt now! Though it's interesting seeing how Durkula behaves a lot like Roy, albeit more of a jerk. Roy being close to getting denied the Good afterlife seems to have been a reasonable possibility continues to make sense.
