Overwatch: Thread of the Game
"...and become the hero we need!"
-Efi Oladele
Welcome to the third Overwatch thread on Gitp!
Overwatch is a team based online first person shooter by Blizzard(of WoW, Diablo, and Starcraft fame) in the vein of games like Team Fortress 2 with some MOBA-ish elements, including a large roster of characters, each with a variety of abilities rather than the more common gun choices.
It's currently available for Microsoft Windows, PS4, and Xbox One, and frequently gets updates, whether balance patches or more exciting additions such as new heroes or cosmetic items(skins, collectable sprays, emotes, and more).

Re: Overwatch: Thread of the Game
"Thread of the Game" and "Blizzney Worl" were tied for votes, so I broke the tie, and made the new thread. I must have woken up with bad aim or something, I had a ton of awful games today. I won a lot of them, but no thanks to my own contribution. Ah well, payback for the games I carried hard and we still tanked.
In other news, just for lulz, I watched Wraxu's twitch stream, and was amused to find him blocking XQC as soon as the lobby formed. Glorious.

Re: Overwatch: Thread of the Game
I've been playing Moira off and on on Quick Play, and I think I'm getting the hang of her. I still favor Zenyatta over her as my Support pick for Comp, but I think I have a better grasp on her than I do on Mercy or Ana.
Some Misc. thoughts/tips on Moira that I've picked up:
- Moira seems to have problems with most DPS-centric comps, but she does wonders with a good Tank soaking/blocking damage so that your healing dot can do it's work.
- Speaking of, apparently Moira's primary heal has a healing dot on it. It's a Healing Flamethrower! And much like a flamethrower, don't waste your resource by holding down until your teammate is topped off, just a puff or two is fine.
- Furthermore, there is only so much healing you can do by holding down the primary over your team when they're taking heavy fire, so supplement it with the Healing Orb.
- I'm trying to curb off of a bad habit of using vanish to throw myself onto a teammate in danger, only to get caught in the crossfire. Instead, throw a healing orb to your far off teammate, and save Vanish for Roadhog Hook, Genji Ult, etc. Vanish is an excellent escape tool since it gives the enemy team no cues as to which direction you went.
- Moira's Ultimate is an okay but not great healing ult, and a pretty meh damage Ult. It's only when you can take advantage of both damage and the healing power that it becomes a great initiation tool.

Re: Overwatch: Thread of the Game
Personally I really like using Moira's ult to pick off difficult to nail targets like a flying Pharah/mercy or a soldier with a good vantage point, then turning to heal my team back up. I'm pretty aggressive with my ultimate usage though, since Moira charges hers fairly quickly.

Re: Overwatch: Thread of the Game
Moira is basically 1/3 Mercy, 1/3 Tracer and 1/3 Symetra.
As far as I can tell after playing her almost exclusive for a few days:
1. Blink.*
2. Pick off stragglers and weak prey (Mercy, Widow, Genji, Reinhardt**, Zenyatta, Zombra...)
3. Blink again.*
4. When not blinking, always have your orbs ready.
5. It's remarkable how few people actually pay attention to the orbs. Just like Symetra's. More often than you think you nail a Pharah or a Widow or a Hanzo by just throwing a purple orb half across the room towards the ledge they're sitting on...
6. Heal your tank(s).
7. Heal anyone else.
8. Keep in mind where your tanks are. Really think about if you want to go too far away from them.
*She's NOT Tracer, but never hesitate to blink. If you get hit by something and you don't know what it is? Blink. If you get hit by something and you KNOW what it is and your life-sucking can't heal you faster than the damage? Blink. Always know where a corner or a healthpack is so you can blink in a good direction. Also, blinking backwards is a good trick that never gets old.
**He's weak because unless he's ulting or actually connects his charge, he's toast. He can't get you if you have any kind of mobility at all.Last edited by Avilan the Grey; 2018-01-29 at 03:34 AM.

Re: Overwatch: Thread of the Game
Speaking of Moira: Anyone else think that her default skin is actually the best looking skin for her she can wear? I mean Glam and Moon are cooler, but it does not fit her character, at all. I would have loved Pale if it had kept her red hair, though.

Re: Overwatch: Thread of the Game
That's not uncommon. Usually the original skin is the one that has the best color design, and fits most with the hero. That's why I like the new rash of Cosplay skins, because they borrow designs and themes from other well-designed characters, as opposed to 'this character's normal skin, but with worse colors'.

Re: Overwatch: Thread of the Game
I did! Well caught, and corrected. I did it in a great hurry, because we managed to push the last thread to 51 pages.
More Sombra lulz in quick play this weekend. She's definitely the most fun you can have on a team with no coordination. I do really need to get better about hacking more and shooting less. And apropos of that, here's a very smart video breaking down why game-sense and positioning are way, way, way more important than mechanics in this game:
My only trouble is that I have lots of trouble getting 'good positioning' in the chaotic hellbrawl that most games devolve into.

Re: Overwatch: Thread of the Game
Well what you don't see there is that
1. There's a Moira two steps behind me
2. Both of us jumped off a ledge. They didn¨'t even see me until about 0.2 seconds before the video starts.
Also, I never play with voice chat on. Mostly because I'm in a shared space and me yelling over a mike would bother my wife. But also because I get enough of insults in text form. To actually be yelled at? Argh.Last edited by Avilan the Grey; 2018-01-30 at 01:52 PM.

Re: Overwatch: Thread of the Game
What I really like about Moira is that you actually can punish those freaking divers like Genji or Tracer. I'm playing Mercy a lot, and I've learned that, if you can't protect yourself, nobody will.

Re: Overwatch: Thread of the Game
There's notes; only three entries though.
Junkrat mines now have falloff, Mercy got kerblammo'd (no extra res in Valkyrie, duration reduced to 15 seconds, and speed boost in Valkyrie halved, plus something ese I can't recall), and a bug involving D. Va's hair was fixed.

Re: Overwatch: Thread of the Game
The last one is that Valkyrie doesn't give you instant res anymore. Probably the biggest part of the nerf, along with the removed extra res. Can't swoop in to instantly revive 2 teammates, now you're just slightly more durable than out of Valkyrie so you're more likely to get a res off before getting gunned down in a fire fight.

Re: Overwatch: Thread of the Game
What it does is skill-index the mine just a bit. It's the same nerf I proposed years ago when Valve started tinkering with people bitching about "winbombs" (airburst stickies; using it as a primary instead of a trap layer) in TF2 and they eventually went with..
It has zero impact at the mid-top layers of skill, but raises the skill floor just a bit so it's not so much of an issue.Last edited by Rynjin; 2018-01-31 at 05:08 PM.

Re: Overwatch: Thread of the Game
Question:
Does it also reduce the force or just the damage? I have not yet noticed any difference in the area it clears if you throw it among a group of enemies.Blizzard Battletag: UnderDog#21677

Re: Overwatch: Thread of the Game
How many times has Mercy been nerfed since her rework now? Two? Three? More? I've lost count. Maybe they should just scrap the whole thing as a failed experiment and return her to her previous implementation if they can't get this one to a level they're comfortable with.
