Default The Colony of Papallona (IC Thread)

    Thedvex
You've wandered into the town of Papallona after some time among its satellite villages, spreading the word of your religion. Since the last time you had visited, your eyes are drawn to a large building complex that has replaced a residential district in the middle of town. Asking around, you discover it is a new temple to Vrajig. During the day it billows black smoke, and looking at it at night it glows red with forge-fires. It is the strangest temple you have ever seen. You fondly remember the sweeping lines of the dwarven homes that had stood there before....each looking like it was grown from a tree rather than hacked, hewed and planed out of wood. In the brief time they had been here they had tried to make their homes lovely, only for them to be smashed apart to make room for the temple. You secretly wonder if the beautiful wood was being used to kindle forgefires now.

As you wander around the town, deciding what you are going to buy for dinner, a wirey tiefling in a red cloak nearly bowls you over. You shove him away, and he looks startled before running off. You quickly notice that he has dropped a sealed envelope in the muddy street. Nobody appears to be immediately around you, and it doesn't look like anyone has noticed the incident.

    Mariella
Freshly off the boat from the old world, you look upon the largest city in the New World with great excitement. Asking around, you are trying to find your way to the dwarven district, where their homes are proclaimed to be the most beautiful in the town. Their woodwork is supposed to look like it was grown out of the trees themselves, rather than cut down and worked. You quickly discover that the dwarven district used to lie at the heart of the city, where now a large industrial building is spewing out black smoke from forgefires. It is apparently a large temple to Vrajig, the largest in either the old world or new. Saddened that the homes you were wanting to see are no longer there, you wander around trying to find an inn or tavern to get a meal that hasn't been preserved in salt for months. You turn the corner into an alley and nimbly dodge out of the way of a thin tiefling in a red cloak. She looks at you in shock before taking off running down the alley. As you collect your wits you notice a sealed letter sitting in the mud on the street before you.

    Hadrian
After so long on the boat, you decide to stretch your legs around the city before finding something to eat. After so much time cramped up in a small space, it feels good to have the city spread out before you. The skyline is dominated by smoke from forgefires, and there's an odd sort of tension in the city. You can't quite put your finger on it, but there are enough shifty glances and people stopping conversations as you get near to surely tell that something is not quite right in the city. Lost in thought, it is only your keen reflexes that cause you to step aside as a lanky tiefling in a red cloak steps out of a nearby alley and nearly bowls you over. He seems startled by you, and lets out a sound of surprise before he takes off running back the way he came. A glimmer of white catches your eye as a sealed letter is sitting in the mud of the alleyway before you.

    Nieven
It took you no time off the boat to make your way to the Happy Smith, the less busy of two major taverns in the middle of town. You size up the crowd as you order something that hasn't been salted to death and a mug of the weakest ale you've tasted in a while. After eating and drinking, you pay your fare and stand to stretch your legs. From behind you, something hits you and bears you to the ground. As you come to your sense a thin tiefling woman in a red cloak is standing over you asking if you are alright. As she leans over to help you up you notice she is trying to subtly put a sealed envelope into one of the pockets of your cloak. He eyes catch yours as you notice this and she drops the letter before sputtering out that she hopes you're alright and heads for the door.

    Jax
You are on the docked boat for a good two hours before you realize that it has arrived. Taking to the streets you notice the fine smell of soot and worked metal is heavy in the air, and billowing clouds of smoke hover over the whole of the city. Lost in thought trying to figure out how many forges must be working to make that much smoke, you are nearly ran over by a wirey tiefling in a red cloak. You just barely manage to step out of the way. He mutters some apologies, and brushes by you. You return to your train of thought until your growling stomach convinces you to find something to eat. You walk into a tavern, the Lusty Lady, which is very busy. It is so busy it takes quite a while for you to get noticed and served. The food is okay, better than what you had been eating, but not by much. As you reach in your pockets to find coin to pay for your food, your hand brushes against some paper. Pulling it out, you see a white envelope sealed with purple wax and a signet you don't recognize. Surely that had not been in your pocket earlier.

Nieven quickly pockets the envelope and takes a quick look around to see if anyone noticed the envelope. He then gets up, patting his clothes to get the dust out. Damn, will have to get them cleaned now. he mutters to himself, as he makes his way to a secluded corner, opening the envelope and reading the contents once he makes sure there aren't any eyes on him.

Nieven, having walked the streets earlier in the day, knows exactly where to go following the envelope. He carefully puts the letter back in the envelope and stuffs it into his pocket. He then gets up from where he's seated, quickly making his way to the mayor's office, excited about the chance to make some friends in this new land.

Thedvex frowns at the letter. She doesn't like listening to mysterious figures who make such a light deal out of dominating others' minds, but if others received similar letters they might be going into a trap with less awareness of it than her own. She resolved to be cautious, but she makes her way toward the office of the High Mayor.

Mariella sighs as she makes one last glance around the alley before heading back out into the street. Of course there had been a high chance this had all been a ruse to lure a newcomer into an alley and steal all of their belongings, but she hadn't thought it through that far when she was trying to return the envelope.

As she returns to the main road, she thoughfully taps the edge of the envelope against one of her hands as she looks around. After contemplating the envelope for a few more moments, flipping it from side to side to make sure there was, indeed, no person it was addressed to, she finally decides to open it.

Hadrian hadn't expected almost being knocked over by a random Tiefling.
The itchy-feeling of something being 'off' with the city had taken a lot of his attention as well, so it was forgivable enough. At least he hadn't ended up laying in the mud as well, alongside that letter.
Wait, a letter? Upon really noticing that letter, Hadrian tipped his big circular hat up a little to look from side to see, checking if anyone was heading for the letter, before bending down to pick it up and look for any sort of sign of a Name, address, or some other type of marking to show who it might be from or delivered to.

Mariella contemplates the simple message inside the card. She considers tossing the card in a trash bin for a few moments and going on about finding a place to stay. Whatever this is, it's none of my business, she thinks to herself. Though maybe they should at least know that whomever this letter was intended for won't be showing up."

She checks in with a local and finds out the direction of this 'High Mayor'. How many mayors did this town have if they needed a 'High Mayor'? Maybe things were different here. Once she learns where to find the office, she proceeds there. When she enters, she finds the nearest person and presents the envelope. "Excuse me. A messenger dropped this in the street. I thought I should bring it to your attention."

Jax recalls having heard on the ship that the High Mayor of the town was an Orc, but that there were elections scheduled at some point. It's possible that a Tiefling was elected High Mayor during those elections. It's possible the seal is for the office.

    Nieven
You make your way to the High Mayor's office, and are quickly ushered in. A Secretary leads you to a side waiting room, where you patiently wait. After ten minutes, the door opens twice in fairly quick succession. First a half-elf woman is brought in, and then a lizardfolk woman.

    Mariella
You find out very quickly that the 'High Mayor' is just a fancy title for the Mayor of the town, of which there is only one. It is trivial to find directions to the High Mayor's office. The guards outside usher you in as you show them the letter. Before you can explain how you found the letter to anyone you are brought into a small side chamber. Inside waits another half-elf.

    Thedvex
Thedvex finds her way to the High Mayor's office, and is ushered in by the guards. A secretary brings her into a waiting chamber, where a pair of half-elves are waiting. The secretary disappears before you can ask any questions, and they seem to intend for you to wait.

    Nieven, Thedvex and Mariella
The two of you are waiting in a small side chamber. There are somewhat uncomfortable wooden benches, and a side table with a pitcher of slightly cool water with five tin mugs around it. There are two doors in the room, both fairly crude made of rough-hewn planks and bound in iron. One is the door you were brought into, the other leads somewhere else in the building.

Hadrian's ire for whomever had sent this message began stirring. One thing was if it was a request, but a compulsion? Oh, Hadrian intended on going to the High Mayor's office and tell him what he thought of his compulsion-ridden request.
So off Hadrian went, going right for the High Mayor's office, letter back in it's envelope and held securely in his hand.

There are two doors in the room, both fairly crude made of rough-hewn planks and bound in iron. One is the door you were brought into, the other leads somewhere else in the building.

You quickly make your way to the High Mayor's office. You are led into a side room, where four others wait: two half-elves, a full elve, and a lizardfolk woman.

A few minutes after Jax enters, the door opens again. A strange tiefling enters. Unlike most other tieflings you have seen, his skin is peach, almost a human tone. Only his black horns and tail mark him clearly as a tiefling. He smiles a toothy grin.

"Salutations, weary wanderers. It gladdens my heart to perceive that though not all have fallen prey to my charming incantation, all have come as I have divined. Methinks that some of you are angered, and righteously so, but the purpose indeed was worth the means with which it was performed."

With a puff of black smoke, a steel chalice adorned with rubies appears in his hand, and he pours water from the pitcher into it before taking a long drink. After he drinks, the chalice disappears in another puff of black smoke.

"The Republic needs your assistance. Thieves have stolen a large sum of bullion and supplies, and taken it to the foothills. Our brave defenders cannot be spared to make the journey, but you fair folk might. You will be rewarded for your service, particularly if you bring me the ears of the brigands, and the head of their leader, a vile dwarf named Vilthros. What say you?"

When Jax sees the chalice puff into existence, his eyes brighten--and he fails to hear anything the tiefling says after that point. When it disappears again, he frowns.

    "Curious," he says.

Jax tries to decide if the chalice is magic of if the trick was performed by the tiefling. (Or something else.)

Hadrian looked at the Tiefling with a cold glare. "And you expect us to help you... why? You intentionally try to compel me us here against our will. Back in my homeland I would have been within my rights to claim your life for such underhandedness." Hadrian spoke out in a clear tone of Common, heavily touched with an accent of one who hails from the far eastern forest lands back on the home continent. His attire was also very not-regular, since it was all touched with monastic heritage and being far less 'regular common clothing'.
Looking to the others, Hadrian spoke questioningly "And what about the rest of you? Are you all just go along with this foul act of compulsion?"

The indignant one to her left's points were utterly valid, but now that no one was in any specific danger the heretic had little desire to pursue this path. Thedvex had performed fetching duties for the Republic in the past, as the word "expendable" was grafted to her every scale, and she was getting around to being upset with this.
"What is that hideous new temple that was built over the dwarf-warren?" she asks the peach tiefling.
"And can my reward be to have it removed?"
